OUT ON FILM 2017! 30 years ago I was a closeted student at the University of Georgia. I was starting to realize who I was but, it would take several more years to do anything about it. That same year, the origins of Out On Film began in Atlanta. A group of friends and colleagues decided to bring LGBT films to the area to serve the large, underserved LGBT population. While high-profile films such as “Maurice” might have played in the area, smaller titles would not. These were days without the likes of Netflix and ready access to watch LGBT products. The event grew from there, under various names and under different umbrellas, and to all those pioneers who were involved, we thank you. We celebrate our 30th anniversary this year in style. For the first time ever, we have grown to a whopping 11 days. Our first eight days will be at the Midtown Art Cinema and then we’ll have second weekend screenings at both Out Front Theatre Company and the Plaza Theatre. This is truly a terrific year for LGBT cinema and I think we have an amazing line-up. We open with the LGBT film festival debut of Michael Patrick McKinley’s “Happy.” It’s the story of Augusta, Georgia, native (and former Atlantan) Leonard “Porkchop” Zimmerman, who dealt with tragedy and learned to heal himself and smile again. His Happy campaign has gone global and his yellow smiley face stickers have become inspiration to many. At a time when there is so much negativity in our world, the feel good, crowd-pleasing aesthetics of “Happy” are much needed. And you’ll be as charmed with Leonard as we have been. We also have Tom Gustafson’s star-studded musical “Hello Again;” Trudie Styler’s warm, touching “Freak Show;” Francis Lee’s sexy Sundance hit “God’s Own Country;” Jennifer Reeder’s crowd-pleasing “Signature Move;” Damon Cardasis’ wonderful drama/musical “Saturday Church;” Darren Thornton’s Irish charmer “A Date for Mad Mary;” several outstanding documentaries, such as David France’s “The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson,” Jennifer Kroot’s “The Untold Tales of Armistead Maupin” and Jeffrey Schwarz’s “The Fabulous Allan Carr,” plus tons of short films, including Danny DeVito’s “Curmudgeons.” As the saying goes, we have something for everybody. We also expect our usual quota of visiting filmmakers. Sometimes people ask us why we still need an LGBT film festival. We believe it is vital to showcase work that is for, by and about us – and to do so in an environment that is welcoming. We are also in an uncertain time now politically and it’s important to stick together as a community and stay united. For the next 11 days, we hope to entertain you, educate you and make you laugh, cry and think. Thank you for all your support and we look forward to seeing everyone Sept. 28 – Oct. 8. Curated by Matthew Terrell During the ’80s, ’90s and early 2000s, Dick Richards, along with Potsy Duncan, James Bond and Bud Lowry, provided a safe space on Atlanta cable television for alternative artists – too alternative for the alternative scene – to promote their careers and have fun doing it. “The American Music Show” gave the world the first peek of RuPaul, back when she was just starting out in the underground clubs in Atlanta. TAMS featured “THE AMERICAN performers such as Lady Bunny, Jayne County, John Sex, MUSIC SHOW” The Now Explosion and others who made their mark on queer and mainstream culture. Even though TAMS offers a glimpse into Atlanta’s not-too-distant past, the Atlanta Dick Richards captured on video is a world away from the one we see today. Visit RuPaul’s Midtown home at Juniper and 11th Street – a ramshackle old house where now stands a high-rise. Tour the cruising areas of Piedmont Park in 1983, and witness the social rituals of picking up a trick first hand. Often, the world of TAMS seems like a surreal hallucination induced by the Southern heat – such as their commercial for a trailer park where “every unit is a double-wide and they done fixed up the community room.” The Majestic Diner, Atlanta Airport and Lenox Mall all look familiar enough for modern viewers to connect to. This is the story that “Queercore” tells, from the start of a pseudo-movement in the mid-1980s, intended to punk the punk scene, to the widespread rise of artists who used radical queer identity to push back equally against gay assimilation and homophobic punk culture. Traveling around the globe to a communist country where being openly gay is as foreign a concept as freedom of speech is a frightening prospect for the average traveler, let alone a crazy group of drag nuns, but these Sisters gleefully accepted. They packed their habits (good and bad), feather boas and false eyelashes for 10 amazing days hosting events including an LGBT film festival, conferences on LGBT history and HIV/AIDS and even a gay trivia night. From the pounding nightclubs of Shanghai to the bustling garment district to the iconic Bund, the Sisters created a sensation everywhere they went. Zaynab (Fawzia Mirza) is a Pakistani, Muslim lawyer living in Chicago who begins a new romance with Alma (Sari Sanchez), a confident Mexican-American woman. Zaynab’s recently widowed mother Parveen (Shabana Azmi) has moved in and spends her days watching Pakistani TV dramas while searching for a potential husband for her only daughter. Alma’s mother is a former professional Luchadora, which Zaynab finds fascinating, as she has recently taken up lucha-style wrestling with a former pro wrestler. Luka Kain delivers a magnetic performance as Ulysses – who in his best moments hears music all around, and yet faces some of the worst circumstances imaginable – in this drama about finding a literal sanctum so that you can find yourself. Two successful women who are very much in love decide to have a baby and as a result of which, their relationship falls apart. Set against the backdrop of contemporary London, this is a universal tale of pain and loss. With the help of her best friend, Christine redefines her perception of strength and what it means to be herself. In 1951, Violet and Milly make a love promise over a penny. In 2015, the promise comes due and Violet must face a heartbreaking reality. OUT FRONT THEATRE COMPANY This truly terrific set of six dramatic shorts features some of the best films we’ve seen this year. Bayard “BAYARD AND ME” Rustin, the organizer of the March on Washington and a civil rights leader, adopted his younger boyfriend Walter Naegle to obtain legal protections of marriage. In the love story “Bayard and Me,” Walter remembers Bayard. In “Balcony,” a local girl falls for a recent arrival in a neighborhood rife with racial tensions. On April 20, 2017, on the Avenue des Champs-Elysées, the young police officer Xavier Jugelé lost his life during a terror attack. His partner, Etienne Cardiels, gave a moving speech at the state funeral attended by outgoing President Hollande and incoming President Macron. This is the basis for “Xavier.” When the truth behind a family myth is exposed, a young boy finds the strength to stand up for himself in an unusual way in “Sparrow.” When Debbie comes home for Christmas, she and her mother Gayle are forced to confront the truth about their family’s past over a tense holiday lunch in “He Could’ve Gone Pro.” “Little Potato” is an autobiographical short about a gay boy growing up in the Southeast and his mail-order-bride mother. “BAYARD AND ME”
