Componential Assignment 1: Componential Surface Surfaces ARCH 436 | Prof. Roman Chikerinets tel·o·phase the final phase of cell division, between anaphase and interphase, in which the chromatids or chromosomes move to opposite ends of the cell and two nuclei are formed.

Cellular division has many stages, my fascination lies during the telophase. As the cells divide there is a temporal union of two distinct nuclei forced to reconcile each others presence. This stage of unification where the cells are prepared to exist independently before cleavage acts is captured in the surface. The topological curation speculates an indefinitely dividing organism. The modules are both independent and dependent like the cells

Transformation Snapshots The module expands to bloom and the eccentric opening is allowed to rotate in freely. This manifests as a gradient of apertures that gets created as a result of the change.

Discontinuous Array With each step, the eccentricity of the module reveals a non-uniform field. The construction method provides a choice on the union or separation of modules; it affords an opportunity to physically speculate the different spatial conditions resulting from how the modules are bridged.

Prejudiced Modifiers Modifiers like turbosmooth, shell, and the FFD 4x4x4 box exert pressure on the assemblage to morph. This creates a phase change as the sharp solid metamorphs into an organic landscape. One shaped by discriminate forces.

Architectural2:Hardscape Assignment Architectural Hardscape ARCH 436 | Prof. Roman Chikerinets os·te·ol·o·gy the study of the structure and function of the skeleton and bony structures.

Skeletal structures can say a lot about their owners. From the teeth exposing an organisms diet, to it’s limbs exposing the limits of its motion, skeletal structures come in all shapes and sizes. They are optimized for a variety of tasks, but its visual appeal has always evoked questions of mortality. By reinterpreting skeletal structures using an architectural medium, we bring out it’s visual aesthetic and celebrate its structural capacity. Eiji Yuzawas photographs quitely celebrates this subject and serve as a visual inspiration.

Spatial Fluidity The hardscape creates diverse spatial conditions that takes inspiration from the Yokohoma terminal and is designed in section.

Polygonal modelling - Fenestration

Symmetric Organization Symmetry modifiers are used and fused using edit poly modifiers to create the vaulted structure. Turbosmooth softens the geometry and ties it back to it’s inspired forms.

Assignment 3: Drawing Machines and lurking entanglements ARCH 436 | Prof. Roman Chikerinets Flocking The collective motion by a group of self-propelled entities and is a collective animal behavior exhibited by many living beings such as birds, fish, bacteria, and insects. An emergent behavior arising from simple rules that are followed by individuals and does not involve any central coordination.

The use of delegates and crowd simulation allows for a new paradigm in designing. From the hand that molds the design, it changes the creator into one that guides it. This method of creation subverts the role of the creator exposing a rising question prevalent in the field of AI. Who is responsible for an AI’s creations, the AI itself or those that created it in the first place? Swarm logic of MIT’s fiberbots provides the framework to support this proposal.

Behaviour constraints To create organic networks of non-colliding frame members, an Avoid behaviour was applied to delegates to prevent collision amongst each other. A surface arrive pulls delegates along the axis of travel while a different avoid component causes them to sculpt a negative void in the center to house spatial oppurtunities.

swarm systems The swarm system of delegates allows the creation of forms that respond through a certain individualistic approach. Each line is granted certain freedoms, freedoms to express themselves in response to challenges placed by the designer. Through this pedagogical relationship of the designer and the design, different iterations of possible solutions to a certain challenge emerges. The designer then transforms from a teacher to a curator.

Subdivision Weave The final ceiling sculpture’s woven characteristic was a result of the subdivision and smoothing processes that the form underwent after animation through the cloth modifier. These created an engaging carpet of structural pathways along the surface. This woven nature contributes significantly to its possibility to be used as an architectural screen that makes an interplay of light and shadow when installed.

The curve that an idealized hanging chain or cable assumes under its own weight when supported only at its ends.

Tensile structures have always captivated us with the forms that result from a simple interaction between the body and gravity as a result of finite element suspension. The catenary characteristic is subverted and designed with over the years to create speculative forms that tap into the collective consciousness. Ventricle by Softlabs is an example of one of these studies on this catenary behaviors resulting in contemplative organic forms.

Elevation

Cloth modifier Cloth modifier added to a circular plane with circular cutouts allowed for the form to exhibit interesting conical deformations. The holes were preserved to integrate void spaces within the structure for light or body to pass through. The wind modifier, along with gravitational forces, creates an exciting set of forms that was frozen via snapshot to study further.

Assignment 4: Architectural Softscape ARCH 436 | Prof. Roman Chikerinets The renders show the possibility of using these tensile-inspired forms and the spatial possibilities generated as a consequence. The patterning derived from the modeling process becomes the ornamentation of the artwork allowing for a reinterpretation of an old architectural tradition of celebrating craft. Due to the materiality, the fabric structure is able to ripple and create expressive light and shadow conditions as visitors pass through.

Responsive architecture has existed in various forms over the years.

From Jean Nouvel’s Institut du Monde Arab biuilt in 1987 to the Medina Haram Piazza built in 2010 (images below), responsive architecture has captured the imagination of architects everywhere as an expression of architecture that takes an active role in its expression by responding to the environment or time. The Medina Haram Piazza is composed of 250 responsive shading umbrellas that dynamically shade the piazza as well as working as a water collection system keeping the piazza dry.

Animation The final animated opening of the shading structure is seen below. The mechanical nature of the shading allows for a either an environmentally responsive system, or aesthetical spatial structures that can dynamically create shaded spaces. During its animation in 3DS Max, we see the bones that support the fabric respond using IK solvers that respond automatically to the key frame animation and FK animation of the mechanical support arms.

Hybrid Architectural Assignment 6: HybridArtifact Architectural Artifact ARCH 436 | Prof. Roman Chikerinets pneu·ma that which is breathed or blown pneuma attempts to integrate pneumatic appendages to windmills which are an instrument that is symbolic of air itself. Through pneuma another layer of understanding is offered as it is imparted the strength to affect the physical realm as well as be contained within it. Through the act of juxtaposing both its freedom and containment, air is imbued with emotion as its general image of being free gets called into question.

As clean air gets threatened, its capture represents the threat of commodification that we face if situations do not improve.

Animation After studying windmills in Ames, drawing out different appendages and their animate nature helped lead me to th efinal design. Here we have the basic appendage’s form start to emerge. This allowed me to start modelling the windmill in max and create more interesting details through that process.

Craig Green Fall/Winter 2018 Campaign

Craig Green Craig Green’s work with pneumatics inspired the creation of the appendages due to his creative use of material expression. The pneumatic appendages were made to breathe in and store air as wind picks up, and release them as it dies down. This adds to the pneumatic appendage a chronologicaly animate quality.

Initial Schemes

Process

The modelling was done through testing different inflation methods and inflating different geometries. Starting with different beginner geometries and preserving different edges or nodes affected the cloth that would be simulated as a result. This allowed for some level of experimentation until a final form was decided upon.

Animation

With the animation, some of the important parts to capture were the juxtaposition of the rotating windmill and the inflating air sacs. This is seen in different views as the two freedoms of air is captured.
