EDITOR’S DESK CHAMPIO3NS!! Another eventful year comes to an end and I am chuffed to represent, for the last time, the editorial section of Team V.A.P.S. It has been an outstanding journey and it is difficult to jot down each and every moment with the team in just a few words. SOUVENIR – A Flashback is a memoir of the activities which we as a team organized the entire year. It captures each and every moment which we have spent on field and off field serving the sports fraternity of IBS. Right from the commencement of the session we looked forward to form a team which is strong enough to battle all odds and to some extent we did achieve this and this was reflected in the reward we received – BEST MANAGED CLUB for the second consecutive year making the total count to 3. Although this was the hard work and dedication of the senior team but more than this it was the sheer sincerity and efforts which the junior team had put in for even the smallest thing. So I, on behalf of all the senior V.A.P.S members extend a heartfelt thanks to the junior Team V.A.P.S who stood by us in every situation supporting our every decision and fulfilling our every stipulation. Having the vision and achieving it are entirely different. Starting something new for the first time is in itself an onerous task but the continuous support and efforts of the entire team helped me achieve every bit of my dream. So as I sign off, it is of utmost importance to thank those who stood every time behind me in every attempt I made. Without them the journey would have reached nowhere. Also I extend gratitude to the management and administration for the proactive responses for all the queries we had. It’s time to give the responsibility to the junior team with the hope that they will achieve much more than what we did. All the best and keep shining!

SUPRIYA GAUR VICE PRESIDENT (EDITORIAL) Team V.A.P.S

CAUSERIE with Mr. H. Sitaram Director-Administration Q. Are you a believer of the thought that sports can evade affliction? A. I would rather go by the old dictum which says "a healthy mind and a healthy body". Being in an educational institution we do things that improve our state of mind and sports go a long way making the quest of healthy life a pleasurable activity. Q. Your views on the importance of Discipline and Diet in a sportsman’s life? A. If you want to achieve your dreams, there is no substitute to hard work and discipline. But with that hard work comes the need of proper diet. So I believe that success lands in the ground of those who maintain the ratio of discipline, diet and hard work. Q. The current era is that of women empowerment in every field. Your take on this when the same is applied to sports. A. The time has arrived to dispel the notion of a male dominated society. If women are performing well in sports and have the flair to go further they should definitely be encouraged. What matters is the development of society and if women are playing a crucial role in this then they should be provided with all the prerequisite amenities. Q. How critical is the role of a trainer in sportsman’s life? A. Undoubtedly the role of a trainer cannot be ignored. He is the one who builds the foundation of success by guiding in the right direction. Q. Internal motivation is beyond any external push. Your views on this. A. I completely agree with this statement. Until and unless you are motivated from within, you can never frame your destiny. Every failure should inspire you to work even harder and with this attitude victory will surely be on your side. Q. How is teamwork essential in sports? A. Management is all about team work. In every corporate, team is the basic unit from where the strategies are executed. The same applies to sports. You are just an individual alone but a team helps you to put your energies in the right direction.

COLLOQUY with Prof. Madhavi Garikaparthi Coordinator: Student Activities Q. You have recently been appointed as the new student activity coordinator. So is there any particular challenge that you have come across till now? How are you planning to overcome that challenge? A. Thanks for this question! Well the first stumble for me is to break the assumption that this is a role that can be handled well by a guy and someone who preferably stays on campus or nearby to dedicate more time to the role. I am happy that the management did not think so and gave me this opportunity! My desire for constant interaction with students – not just in classrooms, but earlier as an SIP, MRP coordinator, Mentor, Research Coordinator, involving in brand building of the institute and also as an Associate Dean – helps me understand this role much better. Q. What are the expectations from the clubs here? A. Clubs are meant to invigorate the minds of students furthering the knowledge, experience and creating a continuous learning platform. Q. What are your expectations from the students? A. Students are the heart of any institute and they become our brand ambassadors for future. Whatever they do, this is something they have to remember. Through their enthusiasm and actions they should be constantly progressing themselves and not rest on past laurels. Q. Sometimes even by intense practice an athlete fails to deliver. What does he/she do in that case? A. Well, failure will always add to experience and another way of doing/not doing things. So if you fall, just get up, brush yourselves and get back on the track. The only way to prove that you are tough is to challenge yourselves. Don’t forget, failure is just a stepping stone to success. Q. Sometimes people drop out of college to play professional sports. What is your take on that? A. If they are passionate about the sport then why not? I personally believe that one has to follow one’s passion but at the same time they also have to understand their strengths and weaknesses before they commence on the chosen path.

4 Q. Do you think sports should be included in curriculum and at least 1 sport should be made compulsory for all the students of our college? A. Sports can be integrated with management to reinforce classroom learning’s. Having said that, at the post-graduation level one cannot make it compulsory but urge and provide various opportunities for students to get involved in sports. I believe IBS has good infrastructure to support the sports interests of students. Q. The competition today has soared so high that athletes and players have started resorting to performance enhancing drugs. How can this be controlled? A. Any performance enhancing drugs are temporary. One has to know that the effect is short-term and sometimes it may lead to harmful side effects. In spreading awareness and information about the same it can be controlled to some extent. I suggest Team V.A.P.S to arrange for some guest lectures from eminent sports persons and trainers to create awareness about these. Q. What are your views on prevailing gender biasness in the sports world? A. Gender biasness is prevalent in many fields and sports is not exclusive of this. However, it is heartening to see progress, albeit a little slow, in support of women sports persons and women in sports in general. We need many more Sania, Saina & Sindhu’s for this. Q. Success is nothing but the result of sheer hard work and lessons from failures. We would love to hear your views on the same. A. True, I agree with the thought. ‘Never say die’ attitude is very important for success. Belief in self and not allowing negativity to submerge the passion is very important. Q. With the advent of electronic gaming, it has been noticed that children tend to stay indoors. What according to you could be a measure to push them to actively take part in outdoor games? A. Children now-a-days are more glued to gadgets than playgrounds. Primary & Secondary schooling and the respective schools make an impactful foundation in cultivating sporting habits. They help in creating zeal and enhancing participation spirit in students to actively push them into playgrounds. Irrespective of that at every level the system of education can also embed sports in some parts of their curricula. Q. Should sports be age-bracketed or is age just a number? A. For competitive sports sometimes age does matter, but for participating in any sport and for winning age is just a number. You have great examples of athletes/sports persons who have come back after retirement and won competitions.

Trishna ’16 – Freak-O-Lympics

Mrinal Anand Cup ‘16

Having fun and bagging memories is the basic aspiration of Trishna – the annual cultural fest of IBS Hyderabad. With this at the back of mind, Team V.A.P.S organized their fun event wherein around 15 teams participated. The event was a circuit consisting of four rounds each to be performed at the basketball court, lawn tennis court and the football ground.

Cricket is an every time sport in IBS and you can witness players on the cricket field anytime you cross it. And when it comes to the alumni returning their home, the excitement is in itself encouraging.

Though the basic intention of organizing the event was to serve a platter full of fun but on the other hand it was a test of strength, agility and endurance. The teams battled against each other to complete the entire circuit in least time as the one who finished off early was to be declared as the winner. As the event rolled off, the winner and runner up were awarded with cash prices as well as the certificates. The teams returned with a smile on their faces in spite of the fact whether they won or lost. This was the basic motive of organizing the event and thus Team V.A.P.S succeeded in attaining their goal.

Every year in the month of January Team V.A.P.S in association with Alumni Relations Cell (ARC) step up to organize the Mrinal Anand Cup wherein alumni cricket teams compete with the teams of existing batches to prove that they are still the best. Around six alumni teams landed in IBS to participate in the tournament and return victorious. The event is meant to strengthen the relations with alumni to make them feel that they are still a part of IBS. The existing cricket teams also welcome them with great pleasure and compete with true spirit of sportsmanship. This year 16 teams fought with courage, enthusiasm and grit. Team Gladiators (Batch of M.B.A 2016) won the championship and Crusaders (Batch of M.B.A 2016) emerged as runner up.

COMIENZO “All glory comes from daring to begin” – This marked the beginning of a fresh academic year with new dreams, new goals and new vision. Comienzo is a Spanish word meaning “Start” and it truly was. The veterans of Team V.A.P.S organized an ice breaking session for the extremely excited batch of 2018. It was a conglomeration of the most popular sports at IBS and in a way gave a glimpse to the new pool of the ways in which sports events are held. The very first event for the junior batch witnessed a bundle of emotions where the novices tested their skills against the troupers in exhibition matches for various sports. The sports enthusiasts made their way to the battle field with the aim to prove their calibre in the area they have ruled. The sports included Cricket, Football, Volleyball, Table Tennis, Lawn Tennis, Badminton, Basketball and Tug of War. Cricket is a not just a game, it is synonymous to religion in our country and the story remains the same here as well. Because of this mutual feeling, the cricketers of IBS competed against each other in a thrilling match. Inspired by world class tennis players it was amazing to witness the juniors hitting forehand and backhand against the senior team but that was not enough to rise victorious as the seniors clinched the match in straight sets. One of the most popular game played at IBS is Football and with the entry of new passionate footballers the game reached another level of excitement. It was a hard fought match between juniors and the seniors where the seniors emerged as champion. With the intention to smash away the boundaries of superiority, a Volleyball match was also organized which ultimately was ruled by the old-timers but it also helped in developing some new connections. The shuttlers were also given an opportunity to prove their worth in a Badminton match where the neophytes were successful in defeating the veterans. Table Tennis was also a part of this platter where on one hand the senior girls’ team and on the other hand junior men’s team proved their worth. The game of slam and dunk – Basketball also witnessed the excitement but the victory was grabbed by the senior team in both men and women category. Finally it came down to the test of strength and endurance where the students had to pull their way to success. The mighty juniors overpowered the veteran seniors in Tug of war. This is how an extremely amazing amalgamation of sports showcased the sports activities at IBS in just one move and this is what Team V.A.P.S believes in: “Start unknown, finish unforgettable.”

REVOLUTION New beginning is meant to create an upheaval – be it good or bad. For the first time in the history of IBS, sports and marketing were merged to give the students a practical exposure of what they learn in the curriculum. It is a bit difficult task to think of something which can incorporate both these fields. But it seemed quite easy for the Sports pro V.A.P.S and Marketing Ace Maverick to implement this thought. And this lead to a REVOLUTION. Both these clubs joined hands to organize a sporting event comprising of Cricket and Football. The marketing giant took up the responsibility to market the event in such a way that a large number of participants were interested to take part in it. And the rest was taken care by V.A.P.S. A pool of random participants was selected and they were split into two teams - Starks and Lannister to compete against each other. The two teams battled against each other in electrifying contests. Team Lannister emerged victorious in the cricket match whereas Team Starks clinched a brilliant win in the Football match. The denouement of the collaboration was that a sense of team work ran through the entire campus and it encouraged other clubs to associate with each other. This benefitted the student body as they got an opportunity to experience and participate in events never done before. This revolution thus created a constructive upheaval in the entire campus.

MAD MATCH August 30th was perhaps one of the most happening day for the students of IBS Hyderabad. There was a different level of excitement in the air. IBS Hyderabad is quite famous for its club culture where students can indulge themselves into club activities and can de-stress themselves by joining the club of their interest. Among all the clubs, “Maverick-the official marketing and strategy club” and “ADmire-the official advertising and branding club” focus on the same domain and hence there exists a fierce yet a healthy competition between both of them. V.A.P.S- the official sports and fitness club of IBS Hyderabad through a game of cricket gave an opportunity to both these rivals to compete on field. The pitch was set and so was the evening. The floodlights were turned on and the umpires were ready too. Afore the match supporters of both the clubs started cheering and hooting for their players. The match finally began and both the clubs were already in their full form. The crowd was hooting at every run made and not to mention, the crowd became berserk whenever a 4 or 6 was smashed. With buckets, pom-poms and what not, the clubs were supporting their team in their own innovative ways. The breath taking match finally ended with Maverick continuing their streak of triumph. The crowd applauded both the teams for giving them an extremely fun filled evening away from the anxiety of classes and assignments. Both the clubs in the true spirit of the game, also appreciated the efforts of V.A.P.S members for organizing the match in such an amazing and smooth manner.

STRIKIN’ KNIGHTS “To win the game just remain in the game!!” In the current digital era, we descry children engrossed deeply in gadgets. The most difficult task parents find while nurturing their kid is to encourage him/her to get involved in some indoor and outdoor activities. Even the ancient time games such as chess have now been replaced with virtual frames. Needless to say that the situation demands the youth to take up some effective measures to appeal the attention of growing generation towards these games. Keeping this thought in mind, Team V.A.P.S organized an event especially meant for the enthusiastic players of Chess and Carrom who are ready to take up the challenge of corroborating their skills on board. This mind boggling event witnessed the participation from the entire IFHE University and the eagerness of players was quite encouraging for the team. As the timer was running out, so was the patience of the players! Each and every move of the player was being closely followed by his opponent. After extremely competitive rounds Pratyushdeepta Barua and Likhit ruled the game of Carrom and Chess respectively whereas Aamir Khatri and Biswaprakash Dehury grabbed the runner up title. The games ended in the true spirit of sportsmanship with smiles, happiness and new friendships being created over the board games.

AZADI 70 “You can be a girly girl and still play cricket” -By Mignon du Preez Cricket is a belief in India and great cricket players like Sachin Tendulkar are God of this game. But still in this era of women empowerment cricket is a male dominated sport despite of the fact that Indian women cricket team is performing extremely well. To dissolve this taboo Team V.A.P.S on the occasion of 70th Independence Day organized a girls’ cricket match helping the society in getting AZADI from this line of thought. And this attempt reached an additional level of excitement with commendable participation by the women cricketers of IBS. The spectators gathered in huge numbers to support their friends thus helping the society to get over the thought of cricket being only a man’s game. And the girls’ gave them hundreds of reasons to upkeep this thought by an exemplary performance on field. Although the match was won by the team representing V.A.P.S but the performance of both the contenders was appreciated by the crowd. And the 70th Independence Day ended with the streak of women empowerment all around and this is how V.A.P.S contributed to the development of new society with an all new thinking.

11

RACQ ATTACK “If your racquet shouts louder than words, then Racq-Attack is your game. Commencing in the initial days of the new journey, Team V.A.P.S felt privileged to provide a platform to the talented players of Badminton, Table Tennis, Lawn Tennis and Squash to compete with the best and become the best. The four sports combined to form a single event with an outstanding response form the players. Continuing up to two days, the participants came in teams for Badminton and Table Tennis and as individual players for Squash and Lawn Tennis. The spectators were astounded by beholding the unexpected smashes and some unimaginable shots by the teams. Squash finals took an exciting turn when the battle for victory was between Badam Brothers with Anubhav finally emerging as the winner of that arena. IBS, for the first time in RacqAttack history, saw girls participating and competing in Squash but the title of ultimate champion was bagged by Larrisa with Sowmya turning out to be the runner up. In the past years lot of Table Tennis players came forward in this event and the scenario was similar this year as well. Organizers felt difficult to wrap up the game even in two days but due to their hard work and dedication they successfully completed the event. With some of the National Level Tennis players on board, the game of Lawn Tennis was hard to win for the participants. They sweated out on the court with a lot of backhands challenging their opponent. But the final ball turned into the court of Nikhil Kumar and Kamya Singh while Adesh Mallick and Mrunmai Kanitkar had to satisfy with the runner up tag. Finally one of the most popular sport of IBS, Badminton, received no less response than previous versions of Racq-Attack. Although the champions of this game (Scorpions) lost to the junior team (Baddicts) but the defeat was taken positively as the future of Badminton in IBS seemed sheltered.

Eternal Passion! “Have the passion, take the action and magic will happen.” – Bar Rafaeli When you know what a particular thing means to you, there is only one effort you will ever make - to make it available for others who feel the same. And the same work is done by Team V.A.P.S. Each and every member of the team is passionate about one or the other sport so they know the excitement that beholds the backdrop of every player. Considering this feeling the biggest football tournament of IBS, V.A.P.S Super League (VSL) was organized. VSL is in itself a massive event as it involves different clubs as well as the communities of IBS. Even before the competition kicks off, the clubs and communities which collaborate are given an opportunity to make a choice of their warriors in VSL Auction organized based on the same format as Indian Premier League (IPL) auction. Once the teams are formed, the players leave no stone unturned to attain glory by winning the championship. The third edition of VSL commenced with a whole lot of excitement and expectations from the players. The supporters of the club and community enjoyed every match of VSL in their own unique ways. The tournament first had league stage succeeding in which the teams moved on to the semifinal and final stage. A magnificent final took place between Kutch Krunchers and Therrific Bulls in which Kutch Krunchers emerged out as champions. The Best goal, Best Goalkeeper and highest goal scorer were also appreciated and rewarded.

13

VIRTUARENA Reality lies inside the unexplored world. But exploring it lets you escape reality. The world has transformed into virtual arena and with this theme Team V.A.P.S organized the game of the gamers – Vituarena, a gaming event comprising of FIFA and Counter Strike. The craze for these virtual games especially among the youth in inexplicable. To provide an opportunity for the players who crave to compete in virtual games, this set up was formed. Counter Strike was a team event in which more than 15 teams participated to encounter the opponent in the most amazing ways but the crown of success was grabbed by team CS. FIFA is no less popular than Counter Strike. Around 50 players tried to score some brilliant goals in the FIFA gaming world but Sanket Mohanty performed exceptionally well to get to the top in this event. The main motive of this event was to identify the unidentified. There are a lot of players in IBS engrossed into online gaming but they hardly get an opportunity to prove their worth. So this was an attempt to get them recognized by the IBS sports fraternity.

14

THUNDERBALL 3.0 “Your team becomes your family, the ball becomes your best friend, the court becomes your hope, and the game becomes your life. Teamwork is one of the most important skill that sport teaches us. Any victory is only possible when everyone in the team work hard together and gives his best. Sports act as a great medium to imbibe this skill of teamwork. To inculcate the same, V.A.P.S organized Thunder ball 3.0 to instil the spirit of teamwork among all the participants. All the slam dunks and smashes were made a part of this event. It was an attempt from V.A.P.S members to showcase the importance of teamwork to everyone. They tried to teach people that how necessary it is for the members in a team to come and work together to achieve success. Students in huge number came in teams to participate. It was a treat to watch the participants playing. The evening was jam-packed by the voices of people shouting, whistling and cheering. There was a different energy in the air of IBS during those days. The teams with their exemplary game were the perfect examples of teamwork. Finally, the evening came to an end with the teams with perfect coordination and high performance proving to be the ultimate winners.

15

ICFAI Premier League 4.0 Cricket is not just a passion, for some people it is synonymous to life. IBS is always excited to witness cricket tournament any time. And this excitement touched an extra level with the onset of ICFAI Premier League (IPL) 4.0. 12 teams each representing 12 clubs first of all went under the hammer on the day of auction to bag the most skillful player in an attempt to form an undefeatable team out of all. The teams were segregated into two pools with 6 teams in each. Initially all the teams in one pool had to fight for victory against every other team of their respective pool and the top two teams qualified for semi-finals. With some brilliant performances in the pre final matches, MavKights and Finomenals stood against each other in the final game and it was a tough one. Both the teams performed their best but ultimately the title of IPL Champions was clinched by Finomenals. Even the supporters of all the teams flocked to ground every day with some creative ideas to extend best possible support to their teams. Finally the tournament ended on a very positive note with the spirit of collaboration and hard work to enjoy the fruits of success.

IBS Olympics “Champions keep playing until they get it right!!” The quote above somehow outlines the true spirit of sportsmanship i.e. moving ahead no matter what. It’s a fact that to get to the pinnacle of a sport even the most naturally gifted athletes have to give it their all. V.A.P.S – the official sports and fitness club of IBS Hyderabad, organized “IBS Olympics” on to provide an opportunity to the sports enthusiasts of the college to showcase their talent on the field. To add to the excitement was the division of players in 4 teams- Blue Vikings, Green Celts, Yellow Teutons and Red Goths. The roster consisted of almost every sport played throughout the year - Badminton, Lawn Tennis, Basketball, Table Tennis, Football and Volleyball. It was confounding to watch the game of the champions. The support for each of the team was tremendous and the display of the spirit of team work is beyond any explanation. Along with the regular sports, track and field events were also organized which comprised of 100m, 200m, 400m, 4*100m and IBS marathon. The supporters witnessed some of the best races to victory of their athletes. All in all, it was an exhilarating event! The winding up announced Blue Vikings as the winner and Green Celts as the runner up. IBS Olympics helped the sports people in bonding through competitive yet healthy competitions.

18

FootVolley “When you think something different, success awaits you in the near future.” All around the world we witness players of Football – one of the most loved sport and Volleyball – a game of vigour. But excitement proliferates when the two are combined and the result is FootVolley. Every year Team V.A.P.S organizes this exhilarating event in which players of both football and volleyball form their own teams in such way that they can encounter their opponents in the best possible way. FootVolley is basically a game of volleyball but the passes take place in the form of football i.e. the ball is to be kicked or a header can be taken. Crowd in humungous number witness this event loaded with fun but at the same time full of intense competition. The players expect the unexpected to happen because there in no one who is pro in this game. It is just a matter of how you perform on that particular day. With the same rational a lot many teams registered for the event with team Gimmichimi and BBC entering into the finals. A stupendous effort was put forward by team BBC but at the end Gimmichimi emerged victorious. The crowd enjoyed every bit of the game and returned with memories of a great event.
