I

n December 2021 I witnessed a hi-jacking taking place in Pinetown. Instinctively, I reacted by pulling my vehicle in behind the vehicle that had been jacked in order to prevent the hi-jackers from driving off. I thought that the hi-jackers would flee the vehicle but I was wrong.

The rear doors of the hi-jacked BMW opened and I was shot at by both passengers from the back seat of the BMW. I took a round through my passenger door. I immediately returned fire whilst at the same time, manoeuvring my vehicle so as to avoid taking more rounds. We continued to shoot at each other like the Wild West Pinetown has become. The BMW sped off. I gave chase but lost the BMW in traffic. The vehicle was later recovered.

The law in SA is clear with regard to shooting. One may only shoot when one’s life or that of another is in imminent danger and when discharging your weapon is the only thing left for you to do.

There are a number of complications even when you have engaged in a good (lawful) shoot, the most challenging being that your weapon will be taken into SAPS custody and sent away to be tested for ballistics to see if your weapon has been involved in any other shooting/crime, so consider this before pulling the trigger.

Spend time of the range. Keep your weapon clean. Don’t carry old ammo and take care not to shoot innocent people whilst you are defending yourself or another.

There is an old saying “Better to have a gun and not need it than need a gun and not have it”. However, I am not sure that the playing fields are equal in SA anymore. Some may see carrying a weapon these days as a liability.

WILL I BE INSURED IF MY DRIVER’S LICENSE HAS EXPIRED AND MY RENEWAL IS STUCK IN BACKLOG? Will you still be insured if your drivers license has expired and your renewal is stuck in the current backlog, and an accident or a loss happens?

That’s the question many motorists are asking right now.

So what do insurers say? The short answer, says King Price’s client experience partner Wynand van Vuuren, is that an expired drivers license due to your renewal in the backlog will not affect your cover.

The important issue to be aware of is the principle of ‘causal link’ – which means the reason for a claim rejection must be directly linked to the cause of the accident or loss.

For example, all insurance policies state that your vehicle must always be in a roadworthy condition. But if your tires are worn, and someone drives into you whilst stationary, an

insurer cannot reject your claim, as there was no causal link between the worn tyres and the accident.

By the same token, if your license disk has expired, and an accident occurs or your vehicle is stolen, insurers will have to pay those claims, as the license would not be material to the incident.

What you certainly need to do is renew your license as soon as possible – but it won’t affect your cover. Just make sure the vehicle is always roadworthy, and there are no additional factors that can cause or contribute to an accident.

iven the sorry state of South Africa’s roads, growing numbers of insurers are offering motorists cover for their car tyres and rims – either as part of their comprehensive car insurance, or as a standalone policy. But with the price of some bicycle rims running into the thousands of Rands, can our two-wheeling friends get cover for damages incurred when hitting a pothole or other road obstacle?

“We actually do cover accidental damage to bicycle rims and tyres, as long as you’ve specified your bike as a portable possession. In other words, it must be listed separately on your insurance schedule, and an individual premium paid for it,” says Van Vuuren.

A VOICE FOR KEN PRICE

n November of 2021 KEN PRICE stopped communicating with his family abroad and we were asked by them to check in on Ken who lived a reclusive life in Northdene.

We went to the house and discovered that it was all closed up. Outside lights were on. All curtains were drawn and windows closed.

We were afforded access to the house through another but the moment that I stepped into the house, it was immediately evident to me that the entrance hall was a crime scene. I checked through the house for a human but there was no trace of life and no body.

We cordoned off the entrance to the house and called for the SAPS and a cadaver dog.

The cadaver dog could not find trace of mortality but confirmed trace of decay.

Ken is well known in the motor cycle world, especially the XT500. In the resulting investigation we learned that three (3) of Ken’s showroom-condition motor-cycles had been stolen, likely after the incident that quite obviously to us, had taken place in the house. Other things were stolen from Ken’s home, but recovery of the bikes would tell a story.

We questioned a number of suspects whom we believed may have known Ken’s whereabouts or the whereabout of the bikes but nothing. In my mind, I thought I knew who was responsible for Ken’s disappearance but I had no evidence.

We posted a story of the missing Ken on our FB page. Over 300k people read the post.

This office was inundated with calls from concerned people and people who wanted

to help with information.

Between November 2021 and 10 May 2022 my attention was brought to ten bikes by readers of this page. Each one was up for sale on one or another social platform. We examined and considered each bike but none were Ken’s.

On 10 May a reader brought my attention to a bike that was candy apple red in colour and up for sale. I remembered having seen this bike in a pic in my suspect’s garage taken by another. Ken’s bike however was bubblegum blue. This bike was being advertised for sale in Durban North.

Posing as a buyer I went to inspect the bike on Wednesday 11 May. Imagine my surprise and delight to notice from a chip on the bike’s tank that the colour underneath the candy apple red was indeed bubblegum blue.

On Thursday 12 May I arrived in Durban North with Captain Digby Thomas of the KZN SAPS provincial organised crime unit. Together we questioned the seller as to his acquisition of the motor cycle. He explained that he had bought the bike from a foreign national in Shallcross. There were no papers and the seller insisted that he knew nothing of where the bike came from originally.

Together with the I.O. from SAPS Malvern detectives, we uplifted the motor cycle in Durban North and then went with the seller in search of the foreign national who we found in Shallcross. When asked where he got the bike from, he told us that he had bought the bike from a another man at the other end of Shallcross.

Together we went in search of this man whom we found at his home. He declared that he got the bike from my first suspect in this matter. How fascinating.

We found my first suspect. He was questioned at SAPS Malvern and made certain admissions which resulted in us arresting another three (3) suspects and recovering another two of Ken’s bikes along with things taken from Ken’s home post mortem.

On Thursday night 12 May 2022 we detained four (4) men

whom we have good reason to believe were responsible for the disappearance of Ken Price and the theft of his belongings thereafter. Investigations continue.

We want to thank Captain Thomas and Captain Delais (SAPS detectives Malvern) and her team, for dropping everything to make these arrests and for working above and beyond the call of duty. May justice be served in this matter and may the suspects be dealt what they deserve. We want to thank our readers who continued to send us information on Ken and our suspects.

Without you guys, this case may have gone unsolved.

Ken Price was a victim to parasites who only wanted his “stuff”. Ken was 76. He had recently before his disappearance had a stroke. He was easily overpowered by these zombies who profited from the sale of Ken’s things that they stole and sold after Ken’s disappearance. They even cleaned out his bank account over weeks.

RIP Ken Price. We are so sorry that you fell victim to a society that breeds lawlessness and where the scales tip in favour of the suspects, but we will be your voice on earth, ensuring that justice is served.

As of 30 November 2020, AfriForum had verified and recorded 347 farm attacks and 49 farm murders for 2020.

Of those, 41 attacks and 8 murders took place in KwaZulu-Natal. These represent AfriForum Community Safety’s positions on the matter:

• From various aftermath conversations, the occurrence of tragic loss of life and other losses has repeatedly begun to show a recognizable pattern. The sometimes reluctance of farm communities to look after their own security measures can be distinguished as one of the fundamental contributing factors to vulnerability.

POSITION 1 Farmers should be encouraged to focus more on home and hearth protection as part of proactive measures

• AfriForum would like to help create a safe environment by refocusing on simple countermeasures that will prevent the possibility of attacks and murders on farms. We are aware that many farmers do make strong efforts to protect themselves, their workers and property. As already mentioned, however, it appears from some of the recent reflections that basic measures are sometimes overlooked and that an alternative approach to emphasizing the safety of farming communities is urgently needed.

• Great successes have already been achieved with the implementation of proactive home and hearth protection measures by farmers. However, with the handling and processing of reflections over the past few months, it has also become increasingly clear that there needs to be a renewed focus on the basic aspects that will make farmers and their communities less vulnerable.

• The fact that farm communities are dependent on their own once again clearly manifested, as there was little or

It is essential to realize that communities can and must protect themselves. This can be improved by the following: • Prominence granted to: • Training in preventive security measures; • providing the necessary equipment and technological power multipliers (tactical capabilities) to existing and wellestablished local structures, and • membership of community safety structures such as AfriForum’s neighbourhood watches.

• Trauma support made possible by the AfriForum Trauma Unit, which will also have a volunteer structure in 2021 once the training has been completed.

• Legal support by a legal expert who can assist members should emergency action be taken. The legal expert also provides the necessary advice to members who have undertaken operational action - within the framework of the law - to protect the community.

• Farm communities need to be aware that they are capable of acting and defending themselves, especially in the period

immediately following an attack. The law provides for legitimate self-defence, and as a primary reactive measure, farming communities must organize themselves in such a way that mutual support can be provided should threats arise.

• The focus on strengthening self-security lies in the community strengthening its own power, which lies locked in cohesion within structures and with other role players. This cohesion confuses and disrupts the abilities of destabilizers and deprives them of their freedom of movement.

AFRIFORUM PLANS THE FOLLOWING: Continuation of the presentation of online training with our neighbourhood watches in the 17 modules of the curriculum in order to better prepare neighbourhood watches (for example training in legal aspects, radio handling and communication, first aid, crime scene handling, patrols, and so on).

• The scale of outreach ensures with all our neighbourhood watches.

• Establishment of a voluntary training corps (almost 100 volunteer trainers have already been trained in the northern and central regions. It will be the turn of the southern region in 2021).

• Establishment of a voluntary trauma counsellor corps (already more than 50 voluntary counsellors have been selected, who will be trained in all the regions early next year).
