GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR OUTDOOR SECURITY LIGHTING A secure home requires proper placement and installation of outdoor lighting. Illuminating the exterior of your home with high-performance, well-placed security lighting will make intruders think twice about trying to enter your property. Here are some of Eurolux Lighting’s tips to get the most out of your fixtures if you’re installing outdoor lighting to improve your home security. INSTALL MULTIPLE FIXTURES When it comes to security lighting, the main goal is to eliminate dark spots for intruders to hide in. To achieve this, you need multiple fixtures that offer not-as-bright light as opposed to a single fixture that offers really bright light. The multiple fixtures can be placed in different areas around the exterior of your home to ensure there aren’t any dark corners or patches of the yard where intruders may go undetected. DON’T MISS A SPOT Having multiple fixtures is one thing, but you need to make sure they’re placed in strategic spots. In the front yard, the gate, driveway, pathway up to the front door, and front door itself should all have proper lighting. But don’t neglect the back and sides of your house. This is where intruders usually attempt to gain access to your home because it’s out of sight from people and cars passing by the main entrance of the home. POSITION AND ANGLE The ideal position for security lighting is high up off the ground and shining in a downward direction. This results in a bigger radius of light being cast which ultimately means you’ll need fewer fixtures to get full coverage. Lighting positioned this way also reduces the amount of light pollution produced. Just make

sure you don’t place them too high. The higher the fixture, the softer the light that hits the ground, so fixtures placed really high up will need to be extra bright to work efficiently which can be tricky to achieve. MAINTENANCE There’s no point in having security lights if half of them don’t work. A proper maintenance routine will ensure that your lights are in good shape and work as they should. Identify any burnt-out bulbs and replace them immediately. You should also clean any dirt or dust that accumulates on the shades to keep them shining optimally. Checking these two things once a month is easy and will give you peace of mind. “TURN OFF” SOME LIGHTS This may seem slightly counterintuitive, but having some lights “turned off” is an effective method of deterring intruders. Motion sensor lighting will take would-be intruders by surprise. If they’ve been creeping around in the dark, a sudden flood of light will catch them off guard. Their eyes will take time to adjust to the light and they’ll most likely run away out of fear of being caught. Motion sensor floodlights are a great option because they automatically bathe large areas of the garden in bright light when movement is detected. Your neighbours will probably also appreciate this type of light because it reduces light pollution and won’t cast an unwanted glare into their home, or yours for that matter. USE TIMERS If you work late or go away for days at a time, then lighting set to a timer is a practical security solution. By setting your outdoor lighting to turn on and off at a particular time, you create the illusion that someone is home even when you’re not. Many burglaries occur when homeowners are not at home because it’s an easier target. Timed lighting should aid in putting criminals off.

T

he crime of this time is extortion and the victims are mostly older people motivated by circumstances to put themselves out there and onto social media in pursuit of happiness. Widows are being wooed by men whose only intention is to take as much money from them as they can in the way of loans, money to get from where they are to where their victim is, airfare, accommodation and other. Men get caught up exchanging naked pics with women who would in normal life have nothing to do with them. These women exist only on social media. Once these victims have parted with compromising pics, they are extorted in exchange for such pics not being sent to family and friends of the victim nor disseminated all over social media. And once you have started paying these people, it is very difficult to get them to stop because liker the sharks that they are, the extortionist will not leave whilst there is still blood in the water. Please know that aside from the fact that these particular criminals are hard to catch because they hide

behind anonymity, burn phones, burn SIM cards and email addresses that we may not find linked to them, using this office to catch these people is also costly. So, before you find yourself broke, starring on social media in a way that you likely least expected or embarrassed beyond imagination, be sure that who you are engaging with is a real person versus some omniscient person whose sole intention is to deprive you financially rather than increase your chances of companionship or of finding “true love”. Remember that age old adage “If it seems too good to be true, it’s likely that it is”. BE Safe. Department of Social Development Spokesperson Mhlaba Memela said, the extent of violence against women and children has risen to such an extent that even a life term in prision is no longer a deterrent During lockdown the president instructed strict regulations and measures, which made things worse rape and killing increased sharply. DIY BEAMS IDEAL FOR HOME OWNERS Askari has been developed to cater for the DIY market. The Askari system continues to provide permanent reliable early warning needed to protect, but now also caters for easier installation and transportation should ad-hoc or temporary detection be required. The Askari Detectors are Wireless, battery-operated, dual-sensor, PIR detectors. The spacing between the 2 PIRs results in minimal false alarms, with the detectors designed in such a way as to run parallel to the terrain, which results in a greater area of detection. The fixed PIRs allow for easier setup, and the smaller range allows the detectors to be used as a DIY friendly system with minimal false alarms. Once detection has occurred, the user will be alerted and the relevant precautions can be taken. Askari detectors change the element of surprise, alerting the user 24/7, 365 days a year. BLUE SECURITY BOLSTER EFFORTS IN YELLOWWOOD PARK WITH AN ADDITIONAL AREA VEHICLE

A

collective approach to eradicating crime is at the heart of Blue Security’s involvement in communities such as Yellowwood Park in Durban, where the company introduced a new vehicle this week. “Research has shown the implementation of patrol vehicles as a preventative policing strategy, directly impacts the levels of crime in a community,” said Blue Security CEO, Henk van Bemmelen. “The presence of our vehicles and armed response officers result in even faster reaction times and flushes out opportunistic criminals. This also makes it difficult for organised criminals to operate undetected.” Working closely with residents and the police, Blue Security have secured a higher rate of arrests in neighbourhoods regularly patrolled. The company has also noted many successes in terms of the arrests of known and wanted suspects who previously managed to target multiple homes in a neighbourhood. The vehicle launch was held at Yellowwood Park Primary School, which has more than 1000 pupils and a five decade old relationship with the community. Principal of the school, Bongani Khanyi said, “We’re passionate about the safety of our children and want to protect them. This initiative will assist us in creating a safer learning environment as well as safer community.” Van Bemmelen said, “We know promoting closer community ties between security, SAPS and neighbourhood watch groups will lead to regular engagement and positive partnerships that will proactively unite us in the fight against crime.

Duane Clark, Kevin Matthews, Keith du Randt and Brett Beket.

“We take pride in supporting communities and put our huge pool of resources and extensive experience to work to assist them.” He said, “Partnership is key to overal success.” “We hope the deployment of an additional crime-fighting resource and response officer into the footprint will strengthen networks and relationships within the community which is vital. “We want to encourage residents to join the local neighbourhood watch group. There is strength in numbers. Sign up to support us as we work to make the neighbourhood a safer place to work and live.

Faith Nel, Sharon van Niekerk, Sherryl Reid and Meryl Perumal.

“Yellowwood Park residents have experienced several incidents of crime in recent times from housebreaking to theft and trespassing. “We want to show our care, concern and commitment.” Blue Security launched a new vehicle at Yellowwood Park Primary School on April 9, pictured is principal Bongani Khanyi and Blue Security Operations Director Brian Jackson with pupils and Blue Security Armed Response.

TIPS FOR CRIME PREVENTION T

he topics of crime and public safety are of great importance but not something we think about on daily basis. We usually feel safe as we go about our day-to-day lives until that moment when crime strikes. We are ultimately responsible for our own safety, and must develop and maintain a security mind-set and take proactive steps to reduce the potential of being crime victims. Crime prevention helps to eliminate or minimize criminal opportunities, whenever possible, and encourages citizens to be responsible for their own security and the security of others. In most cases, women are said to be the easy targets. So as a woman, how can you protect yourself from crime? How can you limit the chances of being robbed or taken advantage of? Here are some important crime prevention tips and tactics that we hope you’ll make a staple in your life today.

CRIME PREVENTION TIPS AND TACTICS • Avoid spending lots of time in the parking lot. Whenever you get into your car, lock the door immediately, put your seatbelt and drive away. Do not entertain strangers, no matter how innocent they look. • Don’t go to your car alone at night. No matter what store you’re in, ask them to provide someone who can walk you to your car. Don’t be embarrassed. Remember prevention is better than cure. • When out running your errands, try to empty your purse of all important items that are not needed. Try not to be distracted and keep alert of everything happening around you. Remember, a distracted woman with a lot in hand is an easy target for criminals. • Take notice of everyone around you when going to the bank. Hold your purse tight and have your pepper spray ready to use incise a criminal tries to follow you once you’re out of the bank. • Do not judge a book by its cover. Nowadays criminals look honest, clean and friendly. Be wary of all strangers seeking your help whether it be a ride, direction etc. Page 10

INSURANCE TIPS FOR

p ro t e c ti n g you r hom e As we approach the colder months of the year the risk of home burglaries and hijackings increase. Winter means that there are longer hours of darkness before the sunrises. Be vigilant when getting home at night and leaving in the morning.

TIPS TO DETER CRIMINALS FROM COMING ONTO YOUR PROPERTY: •

•

•

•

Lock your doors and identify the ‘weak spots’ of your property. Areas of the garden or fence that cannot be seen from the house. An electric fence would be the first challenge for anyone trying to get into your yard. It will secure your perimeter as well as give you peace of mind at night. Its wattage usage is minimal, on average less than R50 per month additional to your usual electricity bill.

•

Burglars are known to attack during the late hours of the night or early morning, when the streets are quiet of traffic or people walking past, as well as it being dark.Opt for a sensor or motion light.

•

Get an alarm, noise will attract attention to your home. Roboguard connects to your alarm system. The purpose is to serve as an early warning system letting you know that there could be an intruder on your property. The beams are infrared red lights, usually set up close to the house as most of them use Wi-Fi to transmit.

CCTV Cameras could be life-saving. If you suspect a burglar is on your property, it is advised that you check the real-time cameras before opening the doors. These feeds can be monitored from your phone allowing you to observe your property even when you’re not home!

•

Install burglar guards, the harder it is for a criminal to break in, the less likely it is that they would try. Security gates have quickly become popular among home owners. The convenience of being able to rush into your home and slam the gate locked behind you without fumbling with keys can save you a lot of time being exposed at the door!

Do not open the door if you see uninvited people on your property. Opening the door will put you and your family at risk as the criminals may act out of panic. Rather call the flying squad and your security company.

If all else fails get a huge snake or better yet fit 25mm marine ply on the inside border of your property, one meter wide with 6 inch nails through the wood. If you hear bllod curding screams during the night know that this defence is working!!!!!!!

Do not leave valuables outside as that may attract attention, if the opportunity is there, a criminal may feel tempted.

Remember the harder it is to break in, the less likely they are to go ahead with it. Every security step will add an element of safety to your home; each obstacle will make it increasingly difficult for burglars to gain access to your property.

How to prevent being hi-jacked in a car BONGIWE NDLOVU

T

he number of hijacks are always on a rise in South Africa. The SAPS has reported 18162 cases over the period and that equals to 50 cars being stolen in South Africa everyday. Hijacking on freeway onramps is not known to be an uncommon occurrence, a video circulated on the internet showing that there could be a new hijacking method where a driver can be boxed in by a vehicle in front then be hijacked by the occupants in the car in front of them, this has happened on Beyers Naude onramp in Johannesburg.

• • • •

Take a different route when leaving home or returning home. When approaching a red traffic light at night, slow down so you only reach it when it’s green. Make sure you are not followed, if you suspect you are followed drive to the nearest police station. When being hijacked try to remain calm at all times and do not show signs of aggression.

While the list of things to do to prevent yourself from being hijacked in a car is endless it is very important to remember The provinces and towns that are mostly affected by that if you are being hijacked the best way save yourself vehicle crimes are Gauteng with hijacking prevalent in is to try not to antagonise the hijacker, you need to show Johannesburg and theft mainly occurring in Pretoria. them that you are not a threat. CYBER STALKING IS A CRIME SO WHAT IS CYBER STALKING?

C

yber stalking it is a stalking or harassment that takes place via online channels such as social media, forums or emails. It is a typically planned and sustained over a period of time.

Cases of cyber stalking can often begin as seemingly harmless interactions sometimes, especially at the beginning; a few strange or perhaps naughty massages may even amuse you. However, when it becomes systematic it becomes annoying and even frightening e.g. if you receive a few negative comments from the post you posted on your social media it may upset or annoy you. It doesn’t have to involve direct communication, and some victims may not even realize that they are being stalked online. Perpetrators can monitor victims through various methods and use that information to perform criminal acts. Most of the time cyber stalking involves someone who attempt to get attention of a former partner or someone that the stalker thinks should be theirs. Maybe a person at work, or even a classmate who has attracted the attention of the stalker.

HOW TO PREVENT CYBER STALKING Stats reveal that most cases of cyber stalking that are recorded shows that one out of every 12 women (8,2 million) and one out of every 45 men (2 million) in South Africa have been stalked at some time in their lives. Page 14

Cyber stalking can be prevented by applying certain measures such as blocking your stalker from contacting you on your social media accounts, keep a low online profile, stop sharing sensitive information, reset pass word, limit personal information online, check your privacy settings, and maintain a good digital hygiene, avoid disclosing sensitive information and hide your IP address. However if the stalking persists it may be a time to call the police by dialling (0860010111) they will handle the matter. Law enforcement and social media platforms are on your side and they are there to protect you and play a crucial role in your safety and they are always ready to intervene on your behalf Do not hesitate to contact the police to report cyber stalking. It does not select potential victims everyone can be a victim both males and females but females between the ages of 18/30 are most likely to become victims. In a telephone survey conducted by the University of Cincinnati, 4,446 randomly selected women, who were attending a two to four year course in an institution of higher education, it was found that a stalking incident was defined as a case in which a respondent answered positively when asked if someone had repeatedly followed you, watched, phoned, written, e-mailed or communicated with them in other ways seemed obsessive and made them afraid or concerned for their safety. “The study found that 581 women (13, 1 percent) were stalked. According to Phindile Mazibuko, 23 year old who is a victim of cyber bullying said “to have a stalker is a nightmare that I do not wish can happen to my worst enemy, I lost lots of kilos because of my stalker and the most disturbing issue about my situation is that my stalker was the father of my child, he failed to accept that I moved on with my life after I broke up with him, so I am asking anyone who is a victim to report the matter to the police before is too late. They helped me and by arresting my ex I gained my life back”.
