ADVERTORIAL
ELECTRIC FENCING PRODUCTS THAT DELIVERS PEACE OF MIND Nemtek’s extensive range of quality and innovative security electric fencing products has helped ensure the safety and well-being of households for more than 30 years. Our products are trusted and recommended by many homeowners to offer better security for their family and friends. We can help provide you with the best solutions to meet your requirements. For homeowners who currently have an electric fence installed, you are able to enhance your peace of mind with our patented Nemtek Dual Action Tension Sensors. These sensors can detect a change of tension in the fence wire and uses the current electric fence monitoring circuit to create an alarm. They increase the likelihood of an intruder being detected and reduces the possibility of tampering. Gone are the days where an intruder could gain access to your property by simply separating the wires and climbing through – now you will know if they try.
You can also double your current Energizer battery backup time and keep that electric fence powered up during power cuts. By installing a Nemtek power pack with built in battery, you can double your current Energizer battery back-up time seeing you through most power cuts easily. Simply install it near your current Energizer, connect it up and let it do the rest. And when the power comes back on, it will get your energizer up to full power level quickly and painlessly. Our continually evolving and inventive range offers economical, reliable and effective solutions for many residential applications with numerous choices to ensure that the right product is available to make your home secure. GENDER BASED VIOLENCE How does the LAW protect you?
I
was asked to do an article on this sensitive issue so that the community can see a simple version of quite a complex Act. It is definitely a very emotional issue as violence from a spouse or loved one is often the cause of the unpleasantness. In my career I attended more than enough of these incidents to know that they are very complicated and the Police are sometimes called upon to resolve an issue that has been brewing and smouldering for years. What then is a domestic relationship? Not easy to define. A domestic relationship doesn’t just mean spouses or courting couples, it could be parents and children, grand-children, even siblings. There is no statute of limitations regarding time limits of the relationship and the cessation of that relationship. Technically, if a person you dated five years ago for two weeks swears at you or threatens you, it falls under the Domestic Violence Act. (See how easy it is to abuse?) The easiest way to explain how the system works is to walk you through it as an exercise. There are going to be some jargon-like numbers thrown around, like SAP508, but each will be explained and referred to as such. Note, to report the incident you can have a vehicle come to your home or work or you can go to the SAPS station in the area in which the incident happened. If the “location” is cyber, like a threatening SMS or email, report the matter to the Station where you live. (Conveying threats via telephone or email opens the suspect up to a host of other charges on top of Domestic Violence.) At the first meeting of the complainant and Police, the official will conduct an interview, in private if necessary, to determine what type of assistance is necessary. The official will note injuries, severity of violence, if necessary make arrangements for medical assistance, shelter, place of safety, counselling (SafetyNet) and if a threat of firearm use is suspected or imminent.
Let’s list the different types of
The following forms will then be completed for EVERY abuse that fall within the complaint of domestic violence, whether a criminal case is desired or not. SAP508 A: A report of Domestic Violence. Domestic Violence Act:
• Physical abuse • Psychological abuse • Intimidation • Economical abuse • Verbal abuse • Sexual abuse • Harassment • Entering a premises without consent • Damage to property Any other controlling or abusive behaviour • Contravening an existing Protection Order • Stalking – in person, by phone, SMS, email or Internet Page 8
AFTERMATH
T
he 9th of July 2021 will go down in South African history as the start of an insurrection aimed at toppling the South African Government. What followed after is the blackest mark against the countries democracy Business were looted Shopping centers were destroyed and over 300 people died during the senseless looting. This was aimed at bringing our country to its knees. Thankfully it did not. Government and police response was slow and when the police arrived, they we totally outnumbered. Eventually on the 4th day the army put boots on the ground and things slowly calmed down. However business were lost people were left homeless and
without food, all of this in the name of the freeing the previous president of South Africa. Arrests have been made, goods recovered and the ring leaders are set for trial. We await the judgment. The outcome of all of this is the poor are worse off and many people have lost their jobs as the business that they were working for are unable to re-open. One business has been around for 50 years employing 650 people It will not reopen and 650 workers are now unemployed. The news here is not all bad Communities, churches rallied together to provide food for the destitute and in many areas a sense of comradely prevailed.

So what now? How do we prevent this from happening? First of all make sure your business and home are secure-fencing roller doors reinforced safety glass, enrolling with a good security company, joining Community Policing Forums or the South African Community Crime watch organization will all help But ultimately it comes down to you and me. What are we going to do to prevent this from happening again? I know what I’m going to do what about you Martyn James Smithers

t the age of 25 I fell in love with the idea of a man! I was somewhat swept of my feet! Now looking back at it all the red flags were there from the start, but they were very subtle. It started with little insults “you’re so stupid, oh I was just joking” “you’re fat” and so on. I remember the first explosion like it was yesterday, it was a Saturday a beautiful summer’s day! I had to go to the OBGYN and I was out for longer than I expected and something cracked inside Adam and he went crazy, accused me of cheating on him, hundreds of missed calls from him. He called my parents and went off on them! Now I had to give his car back so I had to see him and he kept screaming and shouting and that was the first time I was scared for my life. A friend came and rescued me and I stayed with her. This is when the cycle started because he was then very, very, very sorry and it would never happen again! And blindly I believed him and I went back. Not long after being back with Adam I had my first taste of physical abuse. He got really angry and hit me in the face with a cell phone. When it happened I was shocked as I didn’t think that this could happen to me. I was alone because I went back after my friends, family all told me not to go back! At this point he had isolated me from my friends and family. And again, he was sorry he looked after me and so again I forgave him. But the nice honeymoon was shorter this time! Once again Adam was verbally abusive to me and because he was not working, he was taking all the money I was earning. His standpoint was he was my husband and therefore the wages I was bringing in was his. I felt like I was constantly walking on eggshells. I felt myself slowly drifting away and I was becoming a ghost. I tried to leave, and he talked me into staying yet again! And a week later he beat me up so badly and kept me locked in the house so that I could not leave! He cracked my ribs, burnt me with a cigarette, punched me repeatedly while his mom and his sisters watched (it took them some time to help me as they were afraid of him). He broke my new phone so that I could not call anybody to help me. I was hospitalised and as soon as I recovered I went to work one night and didn’t return! I was away for 2 months doing some what well. And he came back and again was sorry and he convinced me to marry him and because I believed that there was still good in him I did and it was okay for a month and then I got pregnant and he started to think I was cheating on him. In a rage he almost drove me off the road, ripped Page 10
TESTIMONIAL me out of the car. I lost the baby. But I fell pregnant again, the abuse did not stop. The verbal abuse - I think this is the worst- was at an all-time high and the physical abuse was not far behind-black eyes, strangling me and punching me in the head whilst the silent treatment and just making me feel like an outcast. By this time Adam had cut me off from my parents, my church, my work colleagues and my friends Let’s fast forward to when Mia was born. Now Adam didn’t want to know the sex of the baby. At a checkup, which I went to alone. I was told I was having a girl. When she was born, he was mad that I kept the secret of her being a girl. When we got out of the hospital, he immediately told me that I needed to work out and lose weight because I was fat. I started walking a week after Mia was born. Not long after Mia was born the verbal abuse started getting worse and worse. When Mia was 8 weeks old Adam was physically abusive! He punched me and even strangled me; he only stopped because I told him to get it over with. I was then called a variety of awful names and then told to sleep on the floor like the dog that I am! Two weeks passed and the final blow out took place. Adam beat me up and he threw me out of the house without my baby. At this point something in me broke! No family and no place to go! I ended up at an abuse shelter. The police and the shelter staff got my daughter back 30 hours and 36 minutes later! I stayed in the shelter for a month and a half-the maximum period I could stay there and I ended up going back to Adam because he had alienated all my friends and my family and I had nowhere to go. His sister Nikki made me feel like I was a home wrecker she also told me that Adam was in counseling
and had changed I believed her. There not succeed. I’m back to being my old self, was no honeymoon period this time. On I have reconciled with my parents, family the day I left the shelter the verbal abuse and friends I’m older but very much wiser. started and the manipulation. The lesson that I have learned from this But little did he know, that in the month part of my life is listen to the voices that and a half I changed. I got smarter and I tell you something is wrong. now I had skills to help me survive! So now I needed to put those skills to work as it In spite of all the trauma if we hadn’t got did not take long for the physical abuse together there would be no Mia and she is to start again, and it was always my fault. an absolute joy. Because my family meant so much to me he made threats against them. And one time he went for my daughter and that was when I knew that I had to get out for the safety of my daughter. So, I did I took Mia and left with the clothes on my back. Credit: Phoenix movement We are safe now we have our own flat, Adam and I are divorcing. Violence against woman can be in variety of ways. This includes physical, emotional, sexual and etc. A lot of women have experienced partner and nonpartner sexual and physical violence. Violence against woman can lead or result to injuries, suicide, unplanned pregnancies, abortions, sexually transmitted infections including HIV&AIDS, causing harm and pain in many families. In most cases violence is subjected from the age of 15 years old and above. Young girls are not safe anymore, their cribs and public environments are now dangerous for women. Homes are full of cruelty, rape and violence. They have nowhere to go, report and escape because
they are surrounded by abusive community and family members. On the 15th of March 2021 a 25 year old woman was allegedly raped and stabbed multiple times in a bush on Longbury Drive in Phoenix according to Police Spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele the matter is still under investigation. The Limpopo High Court has sentenced a 58 year old pastor James Thobakgale to life imprisonment on Wednesday for rape, common assault and calling a person a witch. According to NPA a regional Spokesperson Mashandu Malabi Dzhangi, Thobakgale of the Devine Deliverance church based in seshego, presented himself to his congregation as a powerful man of god. His target was young girls whom are under 16 years and along promised them marriage and emphasizing its was god himself who wanted them to marry. Department of Social Development Spokesperson Mhlaba Memela said, the extent of violence against women and children has risen to such an extent that even a life term in prision is no longer a deterrent During lockdown the president instructed
strict regulations and measures, which made things worse rape and killing increased sharply. As government agencies and other companies had to obey the regulations and close. By then South African woman struggled to report abuse because all organization that provide help, protection and support to women were closed.
