New Learn ing Oppo rtuni ties

NEW Pension courses for 2024 Learning and Development together with Affinity Connect can now announce 2024 dates for two Pension courses: Understanding your Pension Changes Courses are held online and will help you understand the past and the new NHS pension schemes. It will look at how recent changes might impact you and what decisions you'll need to make in the future.

Planning for Retirement courses Courses are held face to face and are aimed at staff who are due to retire in the next 5 years. The course provides financial information and explores choices to enable you to plan for retirement.. It will enable discussion and reflection to consider how people will cope with change, and adapt to retirement.

#AlwaysLearning Focus on...Developing Effective Teams Learning and Development launched the Developing Effective Teams course back in May 2023.

We’ve been talking to a recent delegate of the course, Susan McAlpine, who is a Practice Development Facilitator in the Critical Care Department at the QE hospital, about her thoughts on the course.

Why did you choose to book onto course? What did you expect to get out of it?

I chose to do the Developing Effective Teams course because I wanted to get a greater understanding of how effective teams work together and a little bit about the science behind that. I am in a more leadership role now than previously and wanted to understand what I could to do to help and support my team to ensure that we were working to the best that we could.

What knowledge, skills or behaviours did you develop from attending the course?

With the support of Anna (Dorward), the L&D facilitator of the course (who is amazing!), I have made an action plan to help change the areas of weakness that I recognised my team has and have learned the behaviours that I need to role model for my team to accomplish this. Anna recommended that I could get further support from OD and training which I have taken advantage of and have arranged a meeting for later in the year.

Has it improved patient care? If so how?

All the care we deliver to our patients is effected by how we preform as a team, this course has helped me to understand the part I play in this. Improving patient care is always at the heart of what we do and I hope that my action plan will have a very positive effect too this.

Would you recommend the course to others? If so, why?

I would 100% recommend this course and in fact I already have to all my senior team. I enjoyed everything about this course and found it really beneficial to me but I believe the best part was making an action plan about how you plan to fix any areas you highlighted with Anna planning to make contact in the future to see how far you have come along, so it becomes more than 'I just attended a course' it becomes about what difference I can make.

Any other feedback you would like to add?

I think people often forget all the science that is behind having an effective team and how one small change can make such a huge difference. That’s why I would recommend this course to everyone, even if its a little refresher and all you learn is that you are doing a great job, but then you are there to offer your support and experiences to others.

Calling all colleagues on an Apprenticeship!

There will be an Apprenticeship Networking Event on the 29th November 2023 in the QEF Training Room. This is a great opportunity to meet and network with colleagues who are completing an apprenticeship within the Trust.

Come along and connect with other apprentices, learn about one another’s experiences, and express any concerns you may have to Andrew Lamb, Learning & Development Facilitator.

Date: 29th November 2023 Time: 12.00pm to 13.30pm Location: QEF Training Room Tea and coffee will be available.

Changes to the Trust Appraisal form Learning and Development have recently updated the Trust Appraisal form and some additional questions have been included in the checklist section.

The form now asks colleagues to confirm if they have been offered the opportunity to take part in a Scope for Growth career conversation, and also if they have any cautions, reprimands or convictions to declare. These questions have been included to help support the Trust’s engagement with staff and the NHS People Plan whilst also ensuring we are complying with legislation around convictions.

The most up to date version of the Appraisal form can always be found in the Learning and Development pages on Staffzone.

Gateshead Council’s Essential Skills Team (Learning and Skills) are offering Digital Skills qualifications.

The courses are FREE to 19+ adults who do not already hold equivalent qualifications. #AlwaysLearning

NEW Handling difficult situations with compassion – training programme This eLearning course is being offered to all frontline, patient facing NHS colleagues, and aims to teach the skills and techniques to handle difficult situations with compassion, including using appropriate communication techniques and active listening skills, whilst focusing on how to keep yourself safe and seek support if you feel affected by a situation.

There is an eLearning Zone (ELZ) in the Trust?

Based in Room 5 in the Education Centre, Trust HQ, the L&D team are available along with PC's, support and tea & coffee if you need somewhere to complete your elearning or if you have a query and prefer to chat.

The ELZ is open Mon - Fri 8.30-4.30
