The Gates Summer Internship Program (GSIP) is a key educational initiative of the Gates Institute. The program’s mission is to advance cell and gene therapy research by empowering undergraduates to join the next generation of scientific leaders pursuing careers in regenerative medicine.

SUMMER OF 2025 GSIP ENTERS ITS SECOND DECADE For its 11th year, the Gates Summer Internship Program (GSIP) welcomed an outstanding cohort of undergraduate students to CU Anschutz, immersing them in cutting-edge cell and gene therapy research and exposing them to the many career paths within regenerative medicine.

Our 2025 interns, representing U.S. colleges and universities from Colorado and across the nation, also came from China, Egypt, Germany, India, Kenya, Nepal, and Vietnam. As in previous years, each student was paired with a Gates Institute member mentor and integrated into one of their laboratories, where they pursued research projects across a wide range of topics.

We produce this booklet annually for three main reasons: (1) to serve as a keepsake for our GSIP class, (2) to showcase the program to prospective students or supporters, and (3) to acknowledge and thank the many people who make GSIP possible. On a day-to-day basis, our mentors and their lab staff guide interns, help them design and carry out meaningful research, and in turn gain from the interns’ enthusiasm, curiosity, and fresh perspectives. Several times a week, we supplement lab work with seminars, professional-development workshops, tours of campus facilities, and social or off-campus events, culminating in an end-of-program research symposium at which interns present posters and describe their own research projects to family, guests and our community.

One of our Class of 2025 interns described GSIP as “a transformative experience that will continue to shape my academic and career choices.”

That testimony perfectly captures GSIP’s mission – not only to instigate growth in each intern but also to build connections across cohorts. We are proud to follow former GSIP interns as they go on to distinguish themselves in academia, industry, and beyond, and deeply appreciate their willingness to stay engaged, offer counsel, and “pay it forward.”
