ABOUT THE EVENING Tonight, at the Harlem Stage 2022 Annual Gala, we celebrate our decades long commitment to discovering, nurturing, and presenting the cutting-edge work of visionary artists of color. For nearly 40 years we have stood proudly at the intersection of art and social justice. We are joined at this intersection by the many artists we serve and support – artists like the incomparable Carrie Mae Weems, this year’s Harlem Stage Transformative Artist awardee; the barrier-pushing Sun Kim, this year’s Harlem Stage Emerging Artist awardee; and the multi-talented Jason “Timbuktu” Diakité, who we are thrilled to feature tonight in the U.S. premiere of his WaterWorks commissioned stage adaptation of his best-selling memoir, A Drop of Midnight. Whether you are watching the live performance at the Harlem Stage Gatehouse, the livestream at The Malt House or streaming wherever you are in the world, we thank you for joining us, for your support, and for your dedication to Harlem Stage.

Thanks to Monique Martin and James King for shepherding A Drop of Midnight during its earlier journey at Harlem Stage. Thanks to Janus Property Company for donating the Malt House space for the 2022 Annual Gala.

CARRIE MAE WEEMS

TRANSFORMATIVE ARTIST AWARD Through image & text, film, video, performance, and her many lectures, presentations, and culturally significant convenings with individuals across a multitude of disciplines, Carrie Mae Weems has created a complex body of work that centers on her overarching commitment to helping us better understand our present moment by examining our collective past. Determined as ever to enter the picture — both literally and metaphorically — Weems has sustained an on-going dialogue within contemporary discourse for over thirty-five years. In 2019 in her first solo exhibition in five parts in Toronto, Canada, curator Sarah Robayo Sheridan writes of her work, “With a sensibility honed to the rhythms and workings of power, Weems points to a tidal pull of oppressions, inextricably linked, recurrent and indelible.” Recently, through her non-profit organization Social Studies 101, Weems created, RESIST COVID/ TAKE 6!, a public art campaign in response to the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on Black, Latino, and Indigenous communities that has been activated by museums across the nation and abroad.

BIOGRAPHIES Weems has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions at major national and international museums including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Frist Center for Visual Art, Nashville; The Cleveland Museum of Art; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; The National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.; The Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; and the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo in Seville, Spain. Major solo exhibitions of Carrie’s work include Carrie Mae Weems: The Museum Series, Studio Museum in Harlem, New York (2014), and Carrie Mae Weems: Three Decades of Photography and Video, Frist Center for the Visual Arts, Nashville (2013), and traveled to: Portland Art Museum, Oregon; Cleveland Museum of Art, Ohio; Cantor Center for Visual Arts, Stanford University; Guggenheim Museum, New York (2013 - 2014), The Shape of Things, Park Avenue Armory, New York (2021). BIOGRAPHIES NONA HENDRYX

AWARD PRESENTER

Nona Hendryx tackles social issues, love and politics with a smoky vocal between funk and the end of the stratosphere. Hendryx’s legendary career spans six decades of sound and style evolution. Fans know her as a founding member of the girl group, Patti LaBelle & the Bluebelles, (with Sarah Dash, Cindy Birdsong and Patti LaBelle,) known as “the Sweethearts of the Apollo Theatre” and inducted into the R&B Hall of Fame in 1999. In the 70s, the group morphed into the Rock & Funk Glam Diva’s ‘Labelle’ with the #1 record, Lady Marmalade. Nona Hendryx emerged as the chief songwriter of the group’s socially conscious and illuminating message songs. If Labelle fans grieved the end of Labelle, Nona Hendryx fans welcomed a new one as the revolutionary art-rock, new-wave goddess embarked upon her own impressive Solo career, which spanned eight studio albums and engaged her with an impressive lineup of collaborators (Prince, Peter Gabriel, Talking Heads, Laurie Anderson, Bono and Cameo), resulting in top ten hits and a Grammy nomination (Rock This Houses with The Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards on guitar). Fast forwarding into the 20th and 21st century’s without losing a note (or gaining a pound) Nona Hendryx remains the Queen of Transformation; writing music for theatre, a play with music, BLUE written and directed by Charles R. Wright for Arena Stage and the Roundabout theatre in NY. ‘Blue will be revived at The Apollo Theatre in the Spring of 2021. An activist and vocal supporter for women’s rights, social, political and criminal justice. Helping to raise funds and awareness of HIV/AIDS from the outbreak of the epidemic and

still involved today. Dreaming of being an educator because of her English Teacher and mentor Mrs. Lottie Dinkins, Nona worked with education organizations supporting women in prison, a school in Chicago founded by Monica Haslip, Little Black Pearl, taught Stage Craft at The Clive Davis Recording Academy and founded in 2016 her own Non Profit, SisterSMATR.org to bridge the gap in Science, Math, Art, Technology and Robotics for young women of color ages 14 to 18. Nona added Ambassador for Artistry in Music at Berklee College of Music in Boston to her career. Working across three departments; Music Ensemble, Music Theater and Berklee’s Electronic Production and Design Department with the guidance of the EPD Chair Michael Bierylo and co-Chair Michele Darling. Nona recently made her directorial debut, collaborating with Berklee’s Dr. Richard Boulanger, Akito Van Troyer and Students, the poet Soul Flower and Hank Shocklee (Public Enemy music producer) and Will Calhoun (Living Color Band). Nona’s developing a new work with the European Multi Media artist Chagall (Mi.Mu Gloves) to create an interdisciplinary performance, A Rose OutOf Concrete, Digital Forest, and The Dream Machine, a trilogy with the merged schools, Berklee College and Boston Conservatory including the Conservatory’s Hip Hop Dance students choreographed by the Hip Hop dance professor, Duane Holland. Hendryx presented multimedia performances at MoogFest and MASS MOCA collaborating with Visual Artist, Nick Cave (Until and The Let Go). She created and directed The State Of Grace,a celebration of the artist Grace Jones, performed in the cavern like Drill Hall in The Park Avenue Armory for Theaster Gates’ Black Artist Retreat. Having made yet another transformation into a multimedia CyberDiva; ‘Cyboracle’, Hendryx still writes music across genres with politically and socially relevant lyrics wrapped in neo-funk grooves, other worldly sound designed music, soulful vocals and art-rock charged rhythms. Performing in and writing a song Grace (Trust and Believe) for Carrie Mae Weems’ Grace Notes marked the beginning of another artistic collaboration.

BIOGRAPHIES JASON “TIMBUKTU” DIAKITÉ AUTHOR, ACTOR, EMCEE

Jason “Timbuktu” Diakité is Sweden’s most well-known and respected hip-hop artist. He released his first music in 1996 and has since released eight solo albums and numerous singles of which the vast majority have reached Gold or Platinum status. His accolades also include eight Swedish Grammy awards, and four P3 Guld (Swedish radio) awards. Timbuktu has hosted several shows on national Swedish radio, received a Nordic language award and performed for audiences all over the world, from various corners of Africa to Svalbard, from the legendary Apollo in NYC to the Roxy in LA, at the Polar Music Prize and at the Nobel Peace Prize. Together with the organization Plan, he also built a studio (Studio Timbuktu) in Senegal, to give kids the opportunity to make music. In 2016 Jason released the acclaimed book A Drop of Midnight, later developed into a captivating stage performance.

ARTIST STATEMENT I spent all of 2015 and most of 2016 researching and writing my book A Drop of Midnight. That constituted the longest continuous break from writing and recording music that I had ever taken. However, the deep sense of meaning that I felt while spending time researching my family, people, and countries’ history, eclipsed anything I had ever worked on before. When I, at last, had to send the book off to the printers my soul was ambivalent. Yes, I felt a joy and satisfaction of having completed a monumental task, but I also felt a sorrow over having to leave these histories and these conversations with my ancestors. I ached to find a way to prolong my presence in that world. But let me take you back to the beginning, before I even knew I was working on a memoir, before these conversations with my ancestors and their histories, their stories. One dreary winter afternoon in January 2015, I was sitting down having a cup of coffee with my father. For some reason he started to tell me story of how he drove from Harlem, New York on his way to Harlem, Georgia in 1965. He was moving there, to be with his then girlfriend whose people came from there. I had never heard of this ‘other’ Harlem before. Before my father left New York, his car was broken into, thus when he finally drove south, his side window in the back was smashed. My father was in a suit, and he was very specific to point out that he was wearing a pair of fifty-dollar shoes. Church’s. My grandfather thought the price way too high to pay for a pair of shoes. My father dismissed him as not knowing what fly fashion of the day was. Outside of Lexington, South Carolina my Dad was stopped by the cops who then drove him to the Sheriff’s station and decided to keep the car. My Dad was told to spend the night in a motel. My father’s very real fear of being lynched in the middle of the night caused him to, ironically, climb up a tree to be safe. He spent the night sitting high up in the branches in his expensive shoes. I found this story so tragic and comical I decided to write it down verbatim. That story was how I started on the multipronged project that is A Drop of Midnight. A Drop of Midnight is and has been by far the most meaningful work I have done to date. From January 2015 when I penned the first words that would later become my family memoir, until today. This work has

resulted in a book published in the Swedish, Norwegian language and English, a stage performance in Swedish, an album of original music, a documentary film in the making, and now finally an adaptation for the stage in English. The journey that this work has taken me on is a testament to the unexpected nature of creativity. Initially it was the need to connect my roots and draw a map of my heritage and origins that started me on this project. My identity is a mosaic, a patchwork of countries and cultures and as far back as I can remember I have been asking myself: where do I belong, where is my home? While writing it became very clear to me how migration is a family tradition and for each generation a new piece has been added to our family tapestry. While earlier iterations of this work where focused on summoning my ancestors, connecting myself to them and being in conversation with them, the American adaptation that Jonathan McCrory and I have worked on also passes that legacy forward to my children and beyond. Above all this work is a matter of personal healing and meaning. When I hold the jar of cotton I picked on a field where my ancestors may have slaved and in my other, I hold my daughter’s hand, progress and legacy become physical, opening up a dimension of gratitude and understanding for gift that was given to me and that I am now passing on. I turn to the ancestors and say thank you and then to the future and say go forth. —Jason “Timbuktu” Diakité

ARTIST STATEMENT Our relationship to race has been a divisive one historically. One that has separated, divided and minimized our rich cultural heritage, and lineage to be divorced from many indigenous practices, communities and commodified into monolithic boxes to be checked. Yet, is that who we really are? People defined by race? A powerful concept made by humans that ignited one of the most forced migrations that has ever happened on this planet for bodies whose heritage originate from the shores of Africa. Putting generations of people in perpetual flight charting paths to navigate and find out what home really looks like, as the embers of their legacy are scattered to the four winds. Looking for where home allows for their exhale to truly feel the best and living in a consistent space of an itinerant life. We, Black people, have been searching for where the body is liberated and not bound by western/anti-black tensions. To work on this piece A Drop Of Midnight has been one of my deepest pleasures. It has allowed me to collaborate with a joy filled, energized and exemplary artist, Jason Diakité, before and through a pandemic to illuminate his soul in searching for that home. Jason is gracefully sharing a consciousness that is searching to live beyond the racial binary, culminating in sharing his unique yet universal story with you tonight. The conversation that we have collectively crafted is a universal because of the vulnerability of his telling in the hopes to help us to interrogate this notion of home and race. Intertwined within the intersection of ones legacy and heritage that reveals the roots/foundation to ones existence. We all have a rich vibrant inheritance that we are connected to and Jason is asking us to tap into that inheritance and see our wealth in various new perspectives. So with that we invite you to lean forward in your seats to awaken your ears to open your hearts and be guided into understanding his story. A story held in powerful melody and music that is stirring and raises the vibration. A deeply personal and universal experience that may invite us to be so courageous to find our own space of belonging.
