Welcome to the 31st edition of Féile.
Féile, the north west’s biggest arts festival, returns for the 31st year with a packed programme including music, literature, film, sport, history, comedy, art, carnival, fun days, health, discussions, tours and events and programmes for children, young people and older people. What began as a one day festival in 1993 has since grown into the biggest community arts festival in the North West, attracting over 20,000 people annually to the programme of events. The 100+ events at Féile 2023 will take place across the Bogside, Brandywell, Creggan, Bishop Street, Fountain neighbourhoods and Derry City centre from Saturday August 12th to Saturday August 19th.
31 years since the first Féile, we look forward to celebrating everything that is great about these neighbourhoods where we live, learn, play, work, and visit with our neighbours, friends and visitors to the city. At Féile 2023, we will remember and pay tribute to Roisin Barton, Stephen Gargan and Donncha Mac Niallias, three significant community activists who passed away within the past year, who contributed massively not only to Féile but also to the transformation and development of these communities.
Féile 2023 would not be possible without the support of our funders at The Executive Office, and Department of Foreign Affairs and the collaboration of the many groups, initiatives, volunteers and residents from throughout the Bogside, Brandywell, Creggan, Bishop Street and Fountain areas who have come together to shape and manage this programme of events.

Rossville Street
Saturday 12th - Saturday 19th August
Camerawork Darkrooms Derry (Camerawork) was established in 1982 in Derry’s Bogside to provide local people with the tools that would enable them to create their own black and white images. Derry in the 1980’s resembled a war zone and it was not an uncommon sight to see international journalists capturing images of that conflict. It was against this backdrop that Camerawork photographers began recording everyday life in the city from its citizen’s viewpoint. In existence for over a decade, a huge archive was amassed numbering several thousand negatives that provide a fascinating portrayal of a people and place. ‘Picture this’ offers an opportunity for local people to cast their minds back at a time when everything appeared black and white.

Squarebear - Hood Art 2
The Nerve Centre, Magazine Street

An exhibition inspired by lo-fi meme culture which shows sesh culture and corporate globalism overshadow local Irish nationalism by referencing pop culture and art history. Squarebear uses symbols of youth culture, injecting art culture and pop iconography. In the themes of album covers, movie posters, historical themes and pop culture contrasted against Irish nationalism and local disaffected youth. The exhibition’s aim is to galvanise these ideas in a fun non-political way by making youth feel less lonely and engaged by making art directly for “hoods” while also reaching to bring wider understanding to those issues by relating those same lost youth to these wider problems like corporate culture. It is both autobiographical and an objective witness account of sesh culture and irish nationalism and those conflicting parallels made for those disaffected by politics or in need of an alternative eye.

The Pen Behind The Wire : Eoghan Mac Cormaic

Museum of Free Derry, Glenfada Park
Saturday August 12th | 2pm
Eoghan Mac Cormaic returns to Féile to launch his latest book, The Pen Behind The Wire. Eoghan ‘Gino’ Mac Cormaic from Derry served fifteen years in jail and was on the blanket protest for five years at a time when ten of his comrades died on hunger strike. Eoghan began writing poems on toilet paper and cigarette papers and smuggled them out to his family who kept them safe from British Army raids and seizure. Some of the poems were published in Republican News. A selection of these early ‘blanket’ poems, and other prison poems written after the protest, give us an insight into Eoghan and his comrades’ lives—which even the prison couldn’t contain—and allows us to look with them from their cell windows out into the world where hopes and dreams would be realised.

Consider the Women of Ireland
Cultúrlann Ui Chanain, Great James Street
Sunday August 13th | 7pm
Roisin Barton was a woman of Ireland. A lifelong Republican from a family of lifelong Republicans, she was also a daughter, a sister, a mother, an aunt, a grandmother, a great grandmother, a partner and a friend to many.
Roisin was always involved in something. An activist all her life, from her childhood running “messages” for her mother Nancy Keenan in the 1950s, to her last project, Forgotten Women, highlighting the role of Derry Republican women in the 1940s.

Republicanism, prisoner support, women’s rights and community activism marked her life and Derry is a better place for it. A long-term Chairperson of Dove House and a mentor and support for countless community projects, Roisin had a warm and sometimes cutting wit, a fierce intelligence and a steely determination.
Roisin’s life was a life well lived.
Join us on Sunday 13th August to celebrate that life.

Verbal Arts Centre, Bishop Street

Aaron Edwards explores the profound challenges facing unionism. He confronts the narrow beliefs and prejudices of unionists and loyalists, as well as outlining their more positive and forward-thinking aspects.
By embracing these, Edwards argues, divisions can be healed, and a position reached of mutual acceptance, tolerance and understanding that will benefit everyone on these islands.
Dr Aaron Edwards is a historian from Belfast who is the author of A People Under Siege: The Unionists of Northern Ireland, From Partition to Brexit and Beyond.

An evening event to pay tribute to the much missed Donncha Mac Niallais in Cultúrlann Ui Chanáin. Local activists and special guest Martín Ó Muilleoir will reflect on Donncha’s contribution to the language revival in the north - in the H-Blocks initially, where he taught Irish to others, and took on the role of Cultural Officer in the jail, and also after his release, in his native Derry where he worked tirelessly to promote Irish through his involvement with Conradh na Gaeilge and An Gaelárás/Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin, with Gaelscoil Éadain Mhóir and his work with Sinn Féin and the republican movement in the city and further afield.
