Project 1

Examine The Periphery the periphery lies somewhere between a formal center and an in-between. But where exactly does it starts and where does it stop? Periphery is carrying two meanings Essence and mechanism.

Essence identify the special of the place otherwise mechanism is something that makes something works.

1. THE STORIES – issues/ problems / historical or cultural issues of the site 2. THE MEMORIES–Collective Memories/Fragments of the

site that are related/affecting you personally.

3. THE ELEMENTS of the site – Building / Infrastructural elements of your interests (Wall, Columns, Arches, Ornamentations) 4. THE FEELINGS of the site- History/present/future

Project 1

In This task we have to use our impression and study the periphery towards our site at Kuala Lumpur city center . There are few stops that we passed by 1. Masjid Jamek MRT 2. Independent square 3. KL butterfly Park 4. Perdana Botanica Garden 5. Masjid Negara 6. Pasar Seni MRT

This Map simplifies our long journey at KL downtown from the starting point which was masjid Jamek the last stop which is central market

Site sketches: This was an imaginary sketch of our site that shows the intersection between the city and park with the imaginary periphery between them.

The blue color indicates the city , green color shoes periphery red color shows the botanical garden each place has its own feeling and elements therefore it is highlighted in different color

Periphery is a line changes your feelings after you pass by it could be soft boundaries like trees or hard boundaries like fences

Project 1

Site drawing In this drawing it shows urban and park which also shows the periphery line I indicated which is the LRT railway station. This railway station is the line that separates the city with park. Before passing this line you will have culture, historical feelings of the site. You will have the smell of cars and bikes you will hear voices of street vendors but after passing it you will the feeling of the park which is feeling relaxed and isolated.

Final Model: I tried to represent our site in form of strings that follows our journey. Different colors of strings are used to present the different feelings towards our journey.

When you are walking in the city you feel of being controlled, anxious and cautions however, once you cross the periphery line and reach to botanical garden boundary that welcomes you to other natural habitat than the enclosed city.

This abstract drawing shows the greenery is taking over city sound and noises.

Greenery is the solution to show the beauty of the city. . green urban areas facilitate physical activity and relaxation it forms a refuge from noise moreover it provides safe routes for walking and cycling for transport purposes as well as sites for physical activity, social interaction. I got the relaxed loosen up felling it is all about greenery that lets you forget this long journey.

Collaborative Site Mapping Within the chosen site context which is sekinchan located in Selangor, it is one of the largest rice exporter in Malaysia and fish industry. We have to start looking into the site strategies and proposed program that eventually would complement to the existing site.

The project is distributed into five tasks.

Task 3: Site’s Synergy(postcards) It is essential to explore the in-tangible of Sekinchan. We have to produce sketches, photograph, pick up item from site that could inspire you in a certain way

I tried to show the different activities that happens in our site.

Harvesting, restaurants and fishing.

Fishing village contains a lot of plastic rubbish in the river that causes a horrible smell and that was the most disappointing part in our journey

I tried to express how bad the plastics are in the fishing village by using them as a base for people and walkways. Not a solution but to show how many are they

WORK IN PAPER In order to start project three (our final project) we have to intensively explore urban and building scale in paper. There are two tasks under this part. We have to follow the same theme and method of presentation that we have done in project 1 Task 1: Urban Strategy Task 2: Interventions

There is a different feelings towards our site in Sekinchan is actually a fishing village. But now is more widely recognized as a famous paddy field instead of fishing village. And in the middle between them is town. Therefore, there is different feelings I got during our visit.

Task 1: Urban Strategy Task 2: interventions Reflecting back to what I have done in project one the I decided to follow the same concept which is string model to express my feelings towards the site and to study the periphery in Sekinchan.

Starting from fishing village which is located at the left hand side I got the stunned felling of the atmosphere of the place and how it smells however. Moving to the town, where you get a different feelings it is like we moved to a very different place that is not related to the fishing village. Improper walkways and tiny incomplete roads, I got the feelings of being controlled and cautions from the car as same as the city feeling in project 1. once we passed the periphery and went into fishing village, Referring back to the abstract drawing in project 1. green urban areas facilitate physical activity and relaxation it forms a refuge from noise moreover it provides safe routes for walking and cycling for transport purposes as well as sites for physical activity, social interaction. Reflecting back to our site there was an absence of pedestrians zones creation Absence of activity generation along the road Absence of accommodation No transportation from paddy to the sea except walking Lack of safety and security for pedestrians due to absence of activities People don’t mind walking within the vibrant shopping streets but refuse to walk between inactive path connecting them Lack of connectivity

Problem solving: • Bridge, introduced as solution to the issues identified and around the intervention area • Bridge establishing connection between sea and fishing village • Open gallery at paddy field for tourists • Pavilions to encourage tourists to complete their journey • Cycling zone integrated with buildings

Interventions Bicycle route is added to connect all the site together with some activities that could be done in this long journey for example:

Building up pavilions to rest, offering places to eat bridge to connect fishing village with sea. These drawings shows each intervention location that will be explained.

That Is another route of bicycles in the paddy field will be useful for visitors that are taking night rides and don’t disturb famers at night

Project 3: Live and work From now onwards our final project should follow the same concept of our Urban strategy. The work has to be clearly legible and well communicated, visually and verbally with the urban strategy There are 4 tasks we have to follow : Task 1: Urban Strategy Task 2: Functional Space Task 3: Technical & Detail Strategy Task 4: Atmospheric In this stage we are supposed to gather all the information comprehended in the previous stages to create our final design project.

VISITOR INTERPRETATIVE CENTRE By studying all the issued in the site a project will solve some of them by helping the community and tourists.

Design process At the early design stage I was thinking about doing a ramped building that supports my urban strategy to let the visitors can go straight away to the building and taking this ramped building to their rooms.

Design challenges: -View Limitation of paddy field -difficult for visitors to take a 12M high ramp -Program limitation -doesn’t represent sekinchan

Design process Second design concept is thinking more about a sustainable design that represents Sekinchan.

Building is having two zones private zone and public zone.

Adding on water feature that is flowing from the canal and greenery to be at the center of the courtyard

Design process Third design concept breaking and extending the circular shape to a curvy shape that will add more spatial zoning to the building

-Section drawing shows the elevated cafeteria which is elevated from the ground floor to have the full view of Sekinchan paddy-field which is following the same design concept.

-Workshops to let the tourists experience harvesting and doing rice planter boxes which is one of the process of harvesting.

- External classrooms for students. It is for students to have an external courses or classes in the building -Canal water entering to the central courtyard of the building
