As we wrap up the month of May, I am incredibly proud of the momentum we continue to build across every area of our association. From workforce development and member engagement to advocacy and community partnerships, BBIA has been busy making an impact throughout the region.
This month we celebrated our scholarship recipients during our Scholarship Presentation Lunch & Learn, awarding scholarships to deserving students who represent the future of our industry We also continued our commitment to workforce development through programs like igniteSTEM, where our Education & Workforce Task Force helped introduce students to engineering and problem-solving concepts through hands-on activities.
Our Young Professionals remained active with a successful Sunset Social and a behind-the-scenes tour of Pirate's Voyage in partnership with Bay Young Professionals, while our Professional Women in Building Council launched its first Wine Down Wednesday networking event with an outstanding turnout and tremendous support from our members
We also welcomed members to another successful BBIA Academy Membership Orientation, helping attendees learn how to maximize the value of their BBIA, FHBA, and NAHB memberships while showcasing the many opportunities available through our committees, events, and leadership programs
On the advocacy front, FHBA celebrated several significant legislative victories this month, reinforcing the value of having a strong voice representing our industry at the state level. Thank you to our Government Affairs Committee and all members who continue supporting these important efforts.
As exciting as May has been, June promises to be even bigger We are looking forward to celebrating the 2026 BBIA Scholarship Home Ribbon Cutting on June 3rd and kicking off the 2026 Parade of Homes on June 5th This year's Parade features 28 incredible stops stretching from Bay County to Gulf County and beyond, showcasing the talent, craftsmanship, and innovation of our members.

One of the most rewarding moments each year for the Bay Building Industries Association is the opportunity to invest in the future of our industry, and this year's Scholarship Presentation Lunch & Learn was a powerful reminder of why that mission matters
Members, educators, students, and families gathered to celebrate the 2026 BBIA Scholarship recipients and recognize the importance of workforce development, education, and industry partnerships in shaping tomorrow's construction professionals
BBIA was honored to welcome Josh Balkom, Deputy Superintendent of Operations for Bay District Schools, as keynote speaker Stepping in on behalf of Superintendent Mark McQueen, Balkom shared valuable insight into the importance of educational partnerships and workforce readiness, reinforcing the strong relationship between local schools and the building industry
The Association was also pleased to welcome Kim Nix and Coy Pilson from Tom P Haney Technical College, whose continued partnership helps create meaningful pathways for students pursuing careers in construction and the skilled trades
BBIA Vice President Brian Knox, President of Coastal Classic Homes of Florida, led the program and scholarship presentation while also providing an update on the progress of the 2026 BBIA Scholarship Home Board Member Rob Griffith of Hutt Insurance Agency was also recognized for his leadership and dedication to innovation and workforce development initiatives that continue to move the Association forward
Through the support of the BBIA Scholarship Program, deserving students received financial assistance to help further their education and career goals The Association remains committed to supporting future industry leaders through partnerships with Bay District Schools, Haney Technical College, and the Construction Academies at Rutherford and Arnold High Schools

OThe Bay Building Industries Association recently welcomed members for another successful BBIA Academy Membership Orientation, providing attendees with an in-depth look at how to maximize the value of their local, state, and national memberships through BBIA, the Florida Home Builders Association (FHBA), and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB)
Designed to help both new and existing members better understand the opportunities available to them, the orientation focused on the many ways BBIA supports its members through advocacy, workforce development, leadership opportunities, networking, community engagement, and industry events
A special thank you goes to BBIA Treasurer Marty Perrett, Commercial Lender with Innovations FCU, for serving as host and helping facilitate an informative and engaging program
Attendees heard from several BBIA leaders and committee representatives who shared their experiences and highlighted the many ways members can become involved within the Association Presenters included BBIA Vice President Brian Knox of Coastal Classic Homes of Florida, Immediate Past President Curt Hartog of Pathway Builders, Board Member Claudia Gunselman of Kitchen Designs Group, Professional Women in Building Chair Alexandra Harkins of BGN Contractors, BBIA Secretary Chad Overby of ABC Supply, and Commercial Division Chair Shannon Bona of CrownPoint Partners
The program showcased the wide range of opportunities available through BBIA, including Education and Workforce Development initiatives, Government Affairs advocacy efforts, Young Professionals programming, Professional Women in Building, networking events, leadership development, and community impact projects such as the Parade of Homes, Scholarship Home, and Home Expo
Attendees also learned about some of BBIA's most popular member events, including the Deep Sea Fishing Charter, Golf Tournament, Clay Shoot, Lunch & Learns, and numerous networking opportunities held throughout the year

Membership Orientation continues to be an important part of helping members build connections, discover new opportunities, and become engaged in the work of the Association As BBIA continues Building the Bay Forward, events like these help ensure members are equipped to take full advantage of everything their membership has to offer.

The BBIA Education & Workforce Task Force recently partnered with the City of Panama City for the second igniteSTEM event, continuing its commitment to introducing students to hands-on learning opportunities and future career pathways within the construction and skilled trades industries
This year's challenge put students' creativity, problem-solving skills, and engineering instincts to the test through an Egg Drop Challenge Participants were tasked with designing and building protective capsules using a variety of materials before putting their creations through the ultimate test surviving impact without cracking
BBIA volunteers Rob Griffith, Grace Griffith, Jeff Ury, and Curt Hartog were on hand to assist students, offer encouragement, and share realworld insights into the engineering and construction concepts behind the activity. Throughout the evening, students worked together to plan, build, test, and improve their designs while learning valuable lessons about impact forces, structural design, teamwork, and perseverance
As expected, some eggs didn't quite survive the challenge, while others proved their creators possessed some impressive engineering talent. The activity provided a fun and engaging way for students to experience STEM concepts while developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
The event also highlighted the continued success of BBIA's Leadership Bay project and the Association's broader commitment to workforce development. Through initiatives like igniteSTEM, BBIA helps connect young people with careers in construction, engineering, architecture, design, and the skilled trades while demonstrating the many opportunities available within the building industry
A special thank you goes to the City of Panama City for their partnership and continued support of igniteSTEM, as well as Chick-fil-A for providing dinner for participants and volunteers

Community interest in BBIA Commercial has been strong. In my personal day to day business, many commercial owners and builders have expressed the desire to become more active in the BBIA and join our monthly meetings Some even have presented wonderful ideas for future events that we are internally discussing It is wonderful to see the impact we are beginning to create within the community while word is spreading about our initiatives and monthly meetings

The importance of industry advocacy was on full display this legislative session as Governor Ron DeSantis recently signed four major Florida Home Builders Association (FHBA) priority bills into law
These measures represent significant victories for builders, developers, homeowners, and communities across Florida by helping improve permitting efficiency, streamline development processes, and support housing affordability
Among the new laws is HB 803, which focuses on building permits and inspections. The legislation directs the Florida Building Commission to develop uniform permit applications statewide, expands the use of private providers and inspection services, and encourages more timely decisions on permit applications These changes are expected to help reduce delays and create greater consistency throughout Florida
Another key victory was HB 589, which addresses delays associated with onsite septic treatment and disposal system permits The bill allows certain building and plumbing permits to move forward without waiting on septic permitting approvals, helping keep residential construction projects on schedule
lSB 848 modernizes stormwater management by expanding opportunities for regional stormwater systems and providing additional flexibility for meeting water quality standards This legislation supports smarter infrastructure planning while maintaining environmental protections.
Finally, HB 927 strengthens consistency and predictability within local land planning and development review processes. The bill addresses development review procedures and timelines while supporting additional housing opportunities throughout the state
These legislative wins are the result of years of advocacy by FHBA and local home builder associations like BBIA They also serve as a reminder of the value of membership and the importance of having a strong voice in Tallahassee BBIA extends its appreciation to all members who support our Government Affairs efforts, especially those who participated in this year's legislative trip to Tallahassee and those who serve on our Government Affairs Committee.
Together, through BBIA, FHBA, and NAHB, we continue working to protect our industry, improve housing opportunities, and build a stronger future for Florida.

The BBIA Young Professionals have been staying busy with opportunities to connect, network, and learn from some of the incredible businesses and attractions that make our region unique
The month kicked off with our BBIA Young Professionals Sunset Social at No Name Lounge & Bayside Bistro. While Mother Nature had other plans and the sunset never quite made an appearance, the weather certainly didn't dampen the spirit of the evening A strong group of young professionals gathered to network, build relationships, and enjoy an evening together Events like these continue to strengthen connections within our industry and create opportunities for both personal and professional growth
Later in the month, BBIA Young Professionals were honored to receive a special invitation to join the Bay County Chamber of Commerce's Bay Young Professionals for an exclusive behindthe-scenes tour of Pirate's Voyage Dinner & Show as part of Tourism Appreciation Month.
Hosted by Taylor and the Pirate's Voyage team, attendees were given an inside look at what it takes to operate one of the area's most popular attractions From production and operations to customer experience and daily logistics, participants gained valuable insight into the teamwork and planning required to deliver a world-class entertainment experience
The event also highlighted the importance of collaboration between local organizations BBIA values its partnership with the Bay County Chamber of Commerce and appreciates opportunities to work alongside fellow young professionals who are helping shape the future of our community.
Whether gathering for networking opportunities or exploring the businesses that drive our local economy, the BBIA Young Professionals continue to focus on building relationships, developing future leaders, and strengthening connections throughout the region We look forward to many more opportunities to learn, grow, and engage with our community in the months ahead

The Professional Women in Building (PWB) Council kicked off its first-ever Wine Down Wednesday in style, bringing together an incredible group of women from across the building industry and community for an evening of networking, connection, and conversation
Held at Burgunbarrel, the event exceeded expectations with a fantastic turnout and an atmosphere that perfectly reflected the mission of PWB supporting, empowering, and connecting women in the building industry Based on the enthusiasm and participation, Wine Down Wednesday is officially here to stay and will continue on the first Wednesday of each month
A special thank you goes to Burgunbarrel for hosting and providing such a welcoming venue for the event We would also like to recognize Mike Hodges and Paul Davis Restoration for generously sponsoring the evening and helping make this inaugural gathering a success.
The evening also marked an exciting leadership update as PWB welcomed Debbie Johnson as its new Treasurer Debbie's enthusiasm and dedication will be a tremendous asset as the council continues to grow and expand its impact throughout the region
In addition to networking and fellowship, attendees had the opportunity to submit nominations for the PWB scholarship program. Scholarship recipients will be notified soon, and the council looks forward to recognizing and celebrating these deserving individuals

Corb Architectural Design, the Scholarship Home is more than just another beautiful house It serves a greater purpose by helping fund scholarships for students pursuing careers in construction, the skilled trades, and related industries Through the Scholarship Home program, BBIA continues to invest in the future workforce and support the next generation of industry professionals
The community is invited to celebrate this milestone at the 2026 BBIA Scholarship Home Ribbon Cutting, taking place on Wednesday, June 3 at 3:00 PM at 1820 White Western Lake Lane in Southport Held in partnership with the Bay County Chamber of Commerce, the ribbon cutting serves as the official kickoff to the 2026 BBIA Parade of Homes and offers attendees an opportunity to tour the home, meet the team behind the project, and celebrate another successful Scholarship Home.
The 2026 BBIA Parade of Homes begins this week and runs June 5–7 and June 12–14, featuring 28 homes across Bay, Gulf, and Washington Counties As Entry #1 on the Parade route, the Scholarship Home is sure to be a mustsee stop for visitors looking for inspiration, quality craftsmanship, and a project that truly gives back to the community

The Bay Building Industries Association is proud to congratulate two of our own, BBIA Program Director Beth Klein and BBIA Board Member Rob Griffith of Hutt Insurance, on graduating from the Bay County Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Bay Class 43
Leadership Bay is a nine-month program designed to develop informed, engaged leaders by providing participants with a deeper understanding of the opportunities, challenges, and organizations that shape Bay County Through educational sessions, community engagement, and relationship-building, participants gain valuable insights while strengthening their leadership skills and expanding their professional networks
Throughout the program, Beth and Rob represented BBIA with professionalism, enthusiasm, and a genuine commitment to serving our community. Their classmates recognized those qualities through special class superlatives presented at graduation
Beth was named “Ultimate Community Connector,” a fitting recognition for someone who continually brings people together, builds relationships, and creates opportunities for collaboration throughout our community
Rob was honored as “Most Likely to Empower Others,” reflecting his encouraging leadership style and his ability to inspire and support those around him
These recognitions speak not only to the impact Beth and Rob made during Leadership Bay, but also to the leadership they demonstrate every day through their involvement with BBIA and our community

Florida's 2026 Legislative Session concluded with FHBA continuing its focus on housing affordability, workforce development, permit and inspection reform, growth management, and protecting building permit and code enforcement funds from being diverted to non-construction-related uses
FHBA remains actively engaged on issues impacting builders, including building codes, permitting timelines, lien law revisions, workforce regulations, and local government requirements that can increase housing costs
FHBA leadership continues working with local HBAs across the state to advocate for policies that support attainable housing and a stronger construction workforce.
Registration remains open for the Southeast Building Conference (SEBC), taking place July 29–31 in Orlando, bringing together builders, suppliers, and industry professionals from across the Southeast
Builder confidence improved modestly in May, with the NAHB/Wells Fargo Housing Market Index rising from 34 to 37. Despite the increase, builder sentiment remains below the neutral benchmark of 50 as affordability challenges continue to impact the market
Higher mortgage rates continue to pressure homebuyers The average 30-year fixed mortgage rate climbed to 6 65% in late May, the highest level in nine months
Builders continue to face rising construction costs Material prices for lumber, copper, aluminum, fuel, and other key inputs remain elevated, creating additional affordability challenges for both builders and buyers. According to NAHB's May survey, 32% of builders reported reducing home prices and 61% offered incentives to attract buyers amid affordability concerns and economic uncertainty
Residential construction spending increased 1 7% in March, reversing declines seen earlier in the year and showing continued resilience in both new construction and remodeling activity
NAHB continues to forecast long-term growth in the remodeling sector, driven by aging-in-place renovations, home upgrades, and increased homeowner equity.
