Говорить о великом скульпторе Германии Стефане Балкенхоле следует не только в культуре канонической искусствоведческой мысли, где мастер представляется в традициях средневековой скульптуры и в образах античности. Естественно, корни его творчества скрываются в глубокой архаике, взрывая смыслы так называемого contemporary art и «вспоминая о будущем». Искусство Стефана Балкенхола нуждается в особых критических технологиях, задавая вопрос, скорее наивный, чем чисто исследовательский: «Почему эта, казалось бы, совершенно простая и абсолютно демократическая в своем содержании форма стала самой актуальной во всей необъятной вариативности современных художественных стратегий? Почему она усваивается самыми широкими слоями публики и одновременно несет в себе аристократический характер?»

Сохраняя конкретность даже в деталях одежды, персонажи Стефана Балкенхола далеко выходят за границы национальной феноменальности. Указывая на культуру массового общества, они собирают в себе сверх-Я, величественную универсальность события. Преодолевая материал, превращая его в метафору и символ, скульптуры Стефана Балкенхола приобретают буквально планетарный этический смысл, то значение, где творческая ткань, по выражению Аристотеля, несет в себе «как хорошее дерево – добрую волю».

Визуальная культура Стефана Балкенхола, ее пластические и интеллектуальные смыслы, ее философские принципы неотделимы от художественной материи, в которой сосредотачивается художник. Она относится к той реальности, к которой несколько десятков тысячелетий впервые прикоснулся человек – к феномену дерева; ее сущность стала первичным основанием материи его творчества и его творений – его домом, его инструментальностью, его энергией, его связью между личным миром и окружающим мирозданием.

Объекты Стефана Балкенхола трогательны и беззащитны, но в них содержится уникальное качество – сама вещественность жизни, ее физиология, ее непреодолимое бытие, утверждение неиссякаемости и неизбывности ее начал. Вертикальная структура героев Стефана Балкенхола не скрывает своей связи с философской культурой тотема и с универсальной образностью «дерева жизни». Обращение скульптора к дереву свидетельствует о мифопоэтической стороне его творчества, актуализированной новейшим художественным сознанием. Дерево в этой художественной экологии является смыслом самодостаточности, субстанцией абсолюта, хранением особой жизненной силы, где вертикальное наращивание интенсивностей формирует структуру композиции. В этой концепции прячется библейская традиция, рассматривающая древо жизни как генетическую цепь, как непрерывность рождения, как эволюционные смыслы, постоянно возвращающиеся к своему истоку – Адаму. Ангел, появляющийся в обозначенной золотом инсталляции Стефана Балкенхола, также не имеет явных признаков, определяющих его пол; пара его симметричных крыл утверждает двойственность, его бинарность посланника и миссионера, закрепляя в его образе раннехристианскую традицию благой вести, функции, несущие в себе гармонию и согласие – целостность ствола мирового дерева. Присутствие реального дерева, его качественные свойства, их скрытая ритуальность фокусирует в композициях Стефана Балкенхола общность самых различных знаковых систем, обладающих чувственной корневой системой, подтверждая тезис Гете, что «зелено златое древо жизни».

Скульптурные объекты Стефана Балкенхола активно акцентируют свою антропоморфность и ее контекст. Своей презентацией они обнаруживают бесконечную цепь образов, идущих от человека к окружающей его реальности, завершаясь пейзажем или античной архитектурой. Антропоморфность в этой стратегии не сводится к театральности внешних черт или к классической иконографии. Она живет незаметно непрерывной цепочкой переходов, трансформаций, непрестанным дрейфом среди устойчивых образов рода человеческого. В этой художественной системе возникает термин «морфэ», античная категория, которую Платон использовал в своем трактате «Республика», говоря о боге, способном непрерывно менять свою внешность. Остановленные в мгновении, объекты Стефана Балкенхола живут в предстоянии перед вечным. Они замерли в ожидании, словно магические силы застали их врасплох, погрузив в сон. Отсутствие как феномен, при всей очевидности их явленности перед нами, создает ошеломительный парадокс, вопрос, постоянно воспроизводимый художником: «Где мы?». Этот вопрос, которым живет диалектика дара и потери, потери и желания, желания и скорби материализуется в откровении своего воплощения и олицетворения – в устойчивости вертикальной творческой воли, в этих «одиноких колоссах», своеобразных квазипортретах художника, которые можно было бы обозначить и как квази посвятительные приношения.

Он создает свои композиции из единого куска дерева, выбирая нужный ему объем, составляющий всего лишь небольшую часть использованной массы материала. В своих технологиях творческий процесс Стефана Балкенхола напоминает метод великих скульпторов Ренессанса, редуцирующий, отбрасывающий всё лишнее. Рождение персонажа в этом случае становится матрицей, моделью пластических размышлений художника о своем античном прототипе - Пигмалионе, о его мифологической инструментальности, рифмуясь со сказочно-фольклорными традициями - появлением Буратино, возникшего из куска дерева обычного полена. Оставшийся объем-субъект, покинувший свое деревянное лоно, колыбель, прикрепленный к нему лишь своей пуповиной, естественно указывает на пустоту, образовавшуюся вокруг него.

Этот радикальный художественный жест не сводится к чисто отрицающему, нигилистическому приему, в нем отсутствует энергия архаических сил, дионисийства – он остается как творческая игра на границах объекта, как интериоризация самой реальности, когда художественное произведение ловит и собирает в себе образы пространства и, как ни парадоксально, даже тела зрителей, находящихся вокруг него. Произведение в этом случае определяет структуру места, привязанность к тем измерениям, где оно способно выжить в условиях недостаточных и невозможных для выживания, так как они просто отсутствуют. Композиция возводится к абсолютной действительности, ее содержание приоткрывается, чтобы продемонстрировать, как в ее состав входит, включается объект потери – то есть объект в своем чистом обнаженном виде, в своем предельно минимизированном образе. Аскетические в гармонической полноте своей редукции, они неожиданно становятся не только объектами, сколько статуями, возведенные на постамент и завершенные в своем величии. Их образность утверждает память всех изваянных и воздвигнутых произведений, вышедших из непрерывности истории, преодолевших ее эмпирику, ее бесконечную, чувственную материальную косность и сохранивших вертикальную художественную волю, свое одиночество в великом противостоянии.

Перед нами особая человечность, не призывающая к гуманизму, потерянному в своих омертвелых традициях, не обозначающая профанность культурной памяти, – эта человечность откровенна в своей анонимности как таковой, в своей формализованной чистоте. Она представлена образом человека, уже не отвечающего на зов его имени, она манифестирует пропавших героев, где феномен отсутствия становится знаменем человеческой скорби. Эта человечность указуется Стефаном Балкенхолом своими странными реликтовыми следами, именно в том самом месте, где она исчезла, где любая эстетическая доктрина окончательно преодолевается. Она рассматривает нас из пустоты, из пространства, в котором бесследно исчезает наша виртуальная цивилизация, обозначая величественные утраты и простоту предельной реальности.

Когда Вы поняли, что должны заниматься искусством? Каким было Ваше первое произведение?

Искусством я стал интересоваться примерно с 14-летнего возраста. Во многом этому способствовало посещение Documenta (ред.- выставка современного искусства в Касселе, Герм.) в 1972 году. Создавать свои собственные работы я начал после школы. Я был тогда под большим влиянием поп-арта и мои работы в основном были представлены ассамбляжами (ред.сборными скульптурами) и рисунками.

Я, безусловно, слежу за тем, что происходит, но держа определённую дистанцию. Я редко бываю на вернисажах, но выставки стараюсь посещать регулярно. Также я просматриваю основные международные журналы по искусству. Для меня, как для преподавателя, особенно важно быть информированным. Но, кроме того, это ещё и очень интересно. Однако, при всём при этом следует соблюдать дистанцию и не пытаться объять всё возрастающий объём информации, выбрасываемой на рынок. Нужно очень избирательно подходить к тому, что вы реально хотите посмотреть и о чём узнать.

Что Вы цените прежде всего в произведении искусства: концепт или формальные достоинства? Должно ли быть противоречие между формой и смысловым содержанием художественного произведения? Сам вопрос не вполне корректен. Искусство всегда представлено в конкретной осязаемой форме. И в этом смысле – оно формально. Кроме того, следует сказать, что оно транслируется с помощью очень специфического языка, и у каждого художника – он свой, со своей собственной грамматикой. Но мы, в то же время, не должны забывать и о культурологическом контексте, в котором создается данное произведение искусства. То, что выходит за рамки этого контекста, вынуждает зрителя к столкновению с чем-то ему «незнакомым», таинственным. Таким образом, содержание всегда зависит от формы, от специфического художественного языка. Лично для меня наиболее интересной темой в искусстве всегда был человек, проблемы его бытия. В конкретных работах это может быть передано самыми различными способами: с помощью специальных кодов, метафор, ограничений. Прямолинейный, тривиальный подход к теме, на мой взгляд, лишен всякого смысла. Произведение искусства – это всегда некий посыл, переданный в определённой форме. Таким образом, форма – это средство, способ передачи мыслей и переживаний художника, его восприятия окружающей действительности.

Есть ли какая-то идея, объединяющая Московскую выставку? Ставили ли Вы перед собой какие-то особенные задачи при подготовке экспозиции для Москвы? Главное, что руководило мной – это идея водораздела, соприкосновения реальности и утопии, если хотите. В работе, отражающей эту мысль, золото символизирует духовную жизнь. Красное несёт в себе повествовательный элемент, к примеру, как образ красного флага. В то время как зелёная поверхность напоминает своей сетчатой структурой стены подземки, или, в ещё более общем смысле – любое обезличенное пространство. Иногда утопия (например, религиозный догмат) может стать даже более реальной, чем самая реальная жизнь, и примером тому может служить фундаментализм. Внедрение в эту инсталляцию дополнительных фигур: человека и ангела ж.р., способно полностью изменить её первоначальный замысел, придать ей совершенно другие смыслы. Помимо этой отдельной работы, у меня была задача - по возможности максимально представить всё разнообразие своего творчества, тем более, что это моя первая персональная выставка в России. Мои скульптуры подобны актёрам или персонажам романа, и я приглашаю зрителей, чтобы они придумали для них свои собственные истории.

Многие, особенно далёкие от искусства люди, упрекают современных художников в неумении писать, в отсутствии образования. Как Вы считаете, необходимо ли художнику серьезное художественное образование, чтобы достичь значительных высот в искусстве? Либо для этого достаточно таланта? Что образование дало Вам? Единого для всех рецепта не существует. Обучить искусству невозможно, но очень важно создать атмосферу, способствующую творчеству, обеспечить условия для саморазвития и формирования критического взгляда на мир. Искусство по сути – это форма специализации, причём как на интеллектуальном, так и на техническом уровне. Важно также помнить о том, что человек живёт «не хлебом единым». Искусство, о какой бы его форме не шла речь (музыка, живопись, скульптура, танец и т.д.), играет очень важную роль в жизни человека. И, возможно те люди, которые ставят под сомнение роль и значение художника, даже не в состоянии осознать всю эту важность.

Не подавляет ли, на Ваш взгляд, этот опыт собственную индивидуальность? Я сам работал в качестве ассистента у моего бывшего преподавателя Ульриха Рюкриема (Ulrich Ruckriem). Я занимался доводкой скульптур, анализировал, курировал работы других ассистентов. Это был понастоящему бесценный опыт, очень наглядный, по-сути, продолжение того же образования. Работая у кого-то ассистентом, не следует, однако, стремиться впитать в себя всё, что происходит вокруг. В то же время, чтобы обрести свою индивидуальную позицию, очень важно знать, на чём основываются позиции других. Правомерно ли, с Вашей точки зрения, выделение стилей в искусстве? Если - да, то к какому стилю Вы бы сами отнесли своё творчество? С недавних пор больше не существует ни стилей, ни направлений, ни всяких “-измов” (минимализм, экспрессионизм, кубизм и т.д.). Иногда появляются коммерческие тренды, но понятие “школа” уже утрачено, также как и художественные группы или какието особенные тенденции. Развитие искусства идёт не линейным путём. Многие важные вещи происходят одновременно, и при этом отсутствует коллективная реакция на что-то одно конкретное. Каждый художник выступает со своей собственной повесткой дня, и они очень редко объединяются в группы. Арт-мир сегодня абсолютно неоднороден. Но общие темы и интересы всё же существуют, и в особенности, благодаря таким приметам нашего времени, как влияние средств массовой информации, глобализм в политике и культуре. Искусство перестало играть самостоятельную роль в наши дни, перестало быть самовоспроизводимым. Оно, в основной своей массе, превратилось в зеркало нашего времени, отражающее то, что происходит вокруг. На этой основе появляется много однотипных вещей. Я бы не отнёс своё творчество ни к одному из существующих стилей и тенденций. Хотя, конечно, оно обладает рядом определённых харакеристик, например, реалистичное изображение человека и т.д. У критиков всегда есть определённый соблазн смешать различных художников в одну кучу, а затем попытаться разбить их на категории, причём наиболее примитивным способом. Но всё это, как правило, не работает. Искусство первично, и уже за ним следуют все эти надстройки. Никак иначе не может быть.

Кого из художников ХХ века Вы считаете наиболее важными, интересными и оказавшими существенное влияние на направления развития искусства? Не так просто ответить на этот вопрос. Есть выставки, которые нравились мне прежде и сейчас. Но очень сложно предугадать, окажут ли эти художники влияние на развитие искусства. Как я уже говорил, искусство всегда встроено в определённый социальный и культурный контекст. В то же время, произведения искусства – это высшая точка развития самой развитой цивилизации. На протяжении последних десятилетий искусство находилось под большим влиянием западной культуры. И, в частности, Соединённые Штаты с начала 1950-х годов играли здесь решающую роль. По мере того, как постепенно их доминирование ослабевало, особенно интересно было наблюдать, как на это реагирует остальной арт-мир, насколько он способен меняться. И что же мы видим? Зависимость от Запада, и прежде всего от США, до сих пор высока. Та же степень доминирования Запада характерна и для арт-рынка.

When did you realize you should pursue art?

What was your first artwork?

I started getting interested in art when I was approximately 14 years old; due to a visit to the 1972 documenta. Thus, I started creating my first own works of art after school. I was particularly influenced by Pop Art, my works mainly consisted of assemblages and drawings.

What do you value in an artwork the most: the formal merits or the idea that it is meant to have. Do you think it should be a kind of conflict or gap concerning the form of artwork and its meaning content?

The question in itself is not put quite correctly.

Art manifests itself in a conrete sensual form; in this sense, art is formal. Also, one could say that art always is a very specific form of language.

This language, of course, varies from artist to artist. All artists have their own “grammar”, so to speak. However, we must not forget the cultural context the work was created upon. It is the extension beyond this cultural context, which forms the “unknown”, makes the audience become aware of some kind of secret.

Thus, the content always depends on the form, the specific artistic language. Topics interesting for me are, for example, the human being, human existence. These topics can be translated and put into a work of art in different ways: coded, metaphorically, circumscriptive. The direct way, treating the topic rather trivially, does not necessarily work in my opinion. A piece of art is always transported through the substance of its form, thus the form is a vehicle, a way to translate thoughts and reflections on reality as the artist perceives it.

While preparing for the Moscow exhibition did you keep in mind a certain idea of the whole show or set some special task for it?

The folding-screen comes to my mind: a juxtaposition of reality and utopia, if you will. Here, the gold stands for the spiritual reality, red may be seen quite literally as the „red flag“, whereas the green side reminds with its structure of a subway station or more genrally of the profanity of everyday spaces. Sometimes, utopia (e.g. religious be­ lief) might even be more real than “true reality”; as an example may serve fundamentalism.

In addition to these thoughts, the appendant figures have switched their meaning: the “She-­ Angel” and the man. Apart from this particular work, I wanted to present a great variety of my work. It was the first show in Russia, and I wanted to introduce my work as best as possible. The figures are like actors or characters in a novel; the audience is invited to create their own stories around them.

Many people, especially those who don’t deal with art, are used to reproach artists in being just the amateurs or in not having the proper education. Do you think an artist should have a serious education to achieve considerable prominence in art world? Or talent is enough? What did you get from education yourself?

Of course there is no recipe. It is impossible to teach art. But it is important to create a climate which is fruitful, to provide a basis for discussion and development. There is definitely a seriousness to it; art is a form of specialization; on an intellectual as well as on a technical level.

It is also important to keep in mind that man does not live on bread alone. Art, in what form it may come (music, painting, sculpture, dance, etc.), serves different but important human needs. Maybe people who question an artist‘s seriousness or respectabilitydo not realize how important art really is for human existence.

Do you find time to keep an eye on what’s going on in the art world? Do you happen to visit

exhibitions, Art Fairs? Is it important for a contemporary artist to have regular visual experience and to be aware of the other artists’ work?

I follow the goings-­ on while keeping a distance.

It is only seldom that I attend vernissages but I try to visit exhibitions regularly. Also, I read a couple of international art magazines. It is particularly important as a professor to be informed, and it is certainly interesting. However, one should try to keep a distance and not get crazed by the excessive supply available on the market. One should try to be selective about what they really want to see and be informed about it.

Do you consider important for a young artist to work as an assistant in the studios of already accomplished artists? Did you have such experience?

Don’t you think it may suppress the own vision of the artist, his individuality?

I myself worked as an assistant for my former Professor Ulrich Ruckriem. I finished sculptures, realized them, and oversaw the works of others. It was a very rewarding experience, enormously instructive, a continuing education really. Being an assistant, however, one should certainly not internalize everything. However, to get to an individual, personal position, it is important to really know the position of others. This principle was pretty usual in former timeswhen assistants in the great artist‘s workshops spent years doing nothing else than copying and helping finish their masters‘ works.

In your opinion, does it make sense to outline trends or styles in art? If yes, what style do you refer your art to?

Nowadays, there are no more styles or trends, like the „-­ Isms“ (Minimalism, Expressionism, Cubism, etc.). Sometimes there are commercial trends, but there are no „schools“ anymore, no artist groups or specific tendencies. The development of art is not linear anymore. Many different things are happening at the same time, there is no collective reaction to one thing in particular. Every artist is his or her own general, they rarely join a collective. The art world is absolutely heterogenous.

But of course, there are mutual interests, topics.

This is due to the influences of our times: mass media, world politics, culture.

When it comes to one specific tendency, it may be one that art is not created out of itself anymore.

It is mainly a mirror of our times, of actual realities. This way, similarities develop.

I would not consider my art belonging to any tendency. There are certain characteristics obvious in my work, like the realistic human figure. But I would not relate my work to one specific style or tendency.

It is certainly tempting for critics to lump together various artists and thereby categorize their work easiest way possible. But these categories only rarely fit. Art comes first, then art mediation. Not the other way around.

Who among the artists of XX century you consider the most interesting, important and influential on further art development?

This question is not easily answered. Now and then, there are exhibitions I really like. But it is hard to predict their coming influence on the art world.

As I said, art is always embedded into its social and cultural context. However, art works best inside any advanced culture. During the last decades, art washighly influenced and formed by western culture. The United States in particular have been leaving an imprint on contemporary art since the early 1950s. Since their dominance slowly diminishes, it is especially enthralling to observe how the art world may respond and maybe change. Still, other countries are geared to the West, specifically the US. Therefore, the art market has been dominated by the West as well.

искусством пытается донести какую-то важную мысль до зрителя, то, что он хочет сказать миру, в какой-то степени его изменить. Что руководит Вами в создании того или иного произведения? У каждого художника есть свой мотив, свое собственное видение окружающего мира, которое он должен облечь в осязаемую форму. Совсем не так просто – трансформировать свои идеи в определённый язык, в отдельные слова. Художественный процесс происходит на подсознательном уровне, начинаясь с до-алфавитной стадии. Это очень сложно объяснить словами. Настоящий художник всегда хочет что-то привнести в существующую реальность, заполнить в ней пустующие лакуны своей версией восприятия окружающего мира. Развитие художника идёт подобно тому, как с накоплением жизненного опыта происходит формирование личности. Он как будто ощущает отсутствие, либо недостаток чегото, что и является для него побудительным мотивом к привнесению новаций в этот мир. Если считать, что этот тезис работает, искусство выступает в роли корректора реальности, способа приспособления к ней, воздействия на неё. Реальность при этом может иметь самые различные проявления: жизнь, смерть, любовь, бытие человека, либо общественная жизнь, политика, культура, жизнь социума. И главным вопросом здесь, безусловно, является вопрос о смысле жизни и о том, как обрести уверенность в мире постоянных неопределённостей. Я занимаюсь творчеством с очень позитивным настроем. В искусстве всё очень тонко и чувствительно. Это может быть опыт, несущий много радости и удовлетворения. Бывает, что он ведёт человека к катарсису.

Бывают ли у Вас так называемые муки творчества, или идея очередной скульптуры приходит сразу? Каков путь от возникновения идеи до её конкретного воплощения? Расскажите о Вашей работе в студии. Каковы этапы, особенности создания того или иного произведения? Все начинается с генеральной идеи. Но творчество– это всегда процесс, постоянное взаимодействие первоначального замысла с тем, что происходит в ходе работы с материалом. Кроме того, на меня сильно влияет предшествующая стадия работы. Создание финальной версии скульптуры – это всегда комбинация моего воображения и того, что происходит в ходе практической работы. Что касается выбора темы, то здесь я могу сказать, что чем больше я работаю, тем больше новых идей рождается в процессе. Часто свою следующую скульптуру я нахожу внутри той, над которой работаю сейчас. Джакометти как-то сказал, что «скульптура – это всегда вопрос, и никогда – не ответ». Это бесконечный процесс, который провоцирует всё новые и новые вопросы. И, честно говоря, сам рабочий процесс для меня гораздо более важен, чем результат. Это как приключение, как исследовательская экспедиция, сулящая массу открытий. Поэтому для меня всегда мучительно оглядываться назад на свои прежние работы. Открытие чего-то нового – вот что действительно захватывает.

Есть ли у Ваших скульптур прототипы?

Нет, я создаю отвлеченные, собирательные образы, хотя иногда у них и бывают не столько прототипы, сколько первоисточники: не знакомые мне живые люди, а, например, фотографии в журналах - именно от них я отталкивался, создавая новую серию рельефов. Но я всегда изменял этот первоисточник, менял цвет волос, прическу, черты лица. Я создаю универсальные типажи - но так, чтобы они производили заведомо обманчивое впечатление конкретных, даже смутно знакомых людей. Я сам никогда не придумываю индивидуальность для моих героев - я предоставляю это зрителям. Каждый увидит в них что-то свое, ведь мы и живых людей видим не такими, какие они есть, а такими, какими мы их себе представляем. Поэтому для меня очень важно, чтобы мои персонажи не выражали никаких очевидных эмоций - радости, горя, гордости собой. Я стремлюсь к тому, чтобы они выглядели нейтральными, почти безразличными - только так зрители смогут воплотить в них какие-то собственные представления. Ведь современное искусство тем и хорошо, что намерения художника не ограничивают свободу восприятия зрителя.

Привлекаете ли Вы ассистентов для создания своих работ? Считаете ли важным своё личное участие в процессе производства работ, после того как идея произведения полностью сформировалась и наступил этап её технической реализации? Я не могу и не хочу делегировать кому-то рабочий процесс. Ведь это та часть моей работы, от которой я получаю максимальное удовольствие. Иногда я привлекаю студентов, которые помогают мне в решении каких-то простейших задач. Но это единичные случаи. Созданием скульптур занимаюсь только я сам. Я люблю свободу, люблю тот выбор, который даёт мне материал. Дерево даёт мне возможность сделать самому всё, что я хочу. Поэтому мне практически не приходится никого привлекать для выполнения каких-то специальных задач.

Есть ли на Московской выставке центральная

опорная работа, максимально отражающая основную идею всего шоу? Все работы этой выставки мне очень дороги. И я не хотел бы ставить какую-то одну выше остальных. Они все важны для меня в равной степени. Возможно, отдельные работы привлекают больше внимания, но все они отражают различные аспекты одной темы.

Интересуетесь ли Вы политикой? Есть ли у Вас работы, имеющие политический контекст? Конечно, я слежу за политикой. Но мне кажется слишком тривиальным комментировать своим творчеством ежедневные политические события. На мой взгляд, политика в широком смысле слова, важные политические события и решения, как в зеркале отражаются в людях. И с этой точки зрения, я определённо могу назвать работу «Ангел» политической. То же самое с работой «Sempre piu…» («Ещё и ещё...»), которая была показана в Римском форуме в Риме. Она говорит о чрезмерности, стремлении к абсолюту, жажде иметь то, что нельзя получить. Одновременно она несёт идею подавленности и безысходности: что бы мы не делали, какие бы деньги и прочие блага не зарабатывали, этого никогда не будет для нас достаточно. Нам всегда нужно больше. Это очень характерно для нашего общества. И наглядной иллюстрацией этому служит финансовый крисис, «казинокапитализм», торговля воздухом. И это не вопрос моей моральной оценки или осуждения. Это всего лишь исследование: что же происходит с человечеством? Что на самом деле управляет человеком в жизни? Очень многие вещи связаны с политикой. Например, вопросы частной жизни или свободы напрямую могут зависеть от последних политических событий.

В настоящее время всё больший интерес вызывает китайское, индийское, арабское искусство. Считаете ли Вы это прежде всего данью роста экономической мощи этих стран или видите в этом искусстве действительно высокие художественные достоинства? Я думаю искусство в этих странах развивается благодаря росту либерализма. Ведь прежде для него просто не было места. Кроме того, появились и артрынки, которых прежде не существовало. Растёт их уверенность в собственных силах, которая может только приветствоваться. Если в стране есть много художников, которые узнаваемы людьми, и с которыми они соотносят свою жизнь, это идёт на благо всех: и культуры, и общества.

Важно ли для Вас мнение других людей о том, что Вы делаете? Или каждая Ваша работа - это диалог с самим собой? Имеет ли для Вас значение признание, известность? Относительно критики: и да, и нет. Это зависит от того, кто конкретно этим занимается и как он это делает. Если критика необоснована, меня это, по большому счёту, не волнует. Однако, если у меня есть ощущение, что кто-то имеет аргументированную точку зрения, к такой критике я отношусь серьёзно. Если речь идёт о зрительской оценке, то, в определённой степени, признание вседа приятно. Но здесь также всё неоднозначно. Так, например, есть множество людей, которым нравятся мои работы, но которые их не понимают. Качество оценки гораздо важнее количества. И успех не должен расслаблять. Ты хорош ровно настолько, насколько хороша твоя следующая скульптура.

Любите ли Вы путешествовать? Дает ли Вам это новые идеи для будущих работ? Раньше я любил путешествовать. И я буквально впитывал искусство и культуру зарубежных стран. Но сейчас различные страны всё в большей степени становятся похожими друг на друга: везде тебя окружает аналогичная архитектура, торговые улицы и магазины, в которых продаются одни и те же вещи. Многообразия культур больше не существует, а существует единая глобальная культура. Кроме того, путешествие стало малокомфортным и даже стрессовым занятием в связи с усложнившимися мерами безопасности. В связи с этим, я сейчас ограничиваюсь только поездками на мои собственные выставки. Но при этом я стараюсь получить от них максимум опыта и удовольствия.

Интересен ли Вам образ Сверхчеловека, воспетый немецкой философией? Или простой человек со всеми его комплексами и слабостями, кажется Вам более достойным объектом для воплощения в искусстве? Образу Сверхчеловека я всегда предпочту сложную и уязвимую личность. Это будет более честным и реальным. Невозможно всегда быть счастливым и всем довольным. В жизни так не бывает. Трения и конфликты людям также необходимы. Счастье, как и свобода, не статичны. В течение жизни людям приходится неоднократно переосмысливать эти понятия, бороться за них. Образ Сверхчеловека – это изобретение Голливуда. Реальная жизнь, тем не менее, не заканчивается после надписи «happy end».

It is typically considered that every artist is trying to express a certain idea through his art, something he wants to tell the world and even to change it in some way. What guides you while making an artwork?

Every artist has a specific motivation. Maybe a vision of a particular reality. This vision, the artist wants to give a tangible form. It is difficult for an artist to transport his or her exact vision into language, into words. The artistic process is “pre - lingual”, in a meta -­conscious way. It is not easily described through words. An artist wants to add to the existent reality; it is like a gap in reality which the artist needs to fill with his or her own individual version (or vision) of reality.

It is likewise important to experience oneself as a human being and as an artist during the working process. There is some sense of absence or deficit which drives the artist to create something new to add to this world. It is a thesis, a proposition, which, when it works well, acts as a corrective.

Thus, it is a way to assimilate or treat reality; in this case, reality may have various focuses: life, love, death, human existence; or the mere reality of society. Political, cultural and social realities. It is a question about the meaning of life, or a way to become sure of oneself inside a world of uncertainties. Without meaning to celebrate the superficial appearance or trying to be harmonious all the time, I do make art in the positive sense. Art is very sensual, it can be an experience full of relish -­very rewarding, and sometimes this experience even leads to catharsis.

Do you sometimes experience the throes of composition or the image of the future sculpture appears immediately? Describe the path from the idea of an artwork to its implementation? Say a few words about your studio work. What are the stages, specifics of creating an artwork?

I usually start having a basic idea. But it is always a process, an interaction between my original idea and what happens while working the material. I am always reacting to the previous work step. The search for the final form always consists of what I imagine and what I actually find.

Concerning the choice of topic, I can say that the more I work the more happens.

I often find the next figure inside the one I am working on, because I often follow the way I started with to see what is there to find out. Giacometti once said that sculpture is a question, not an answer. It is a restless process which always leads to more questions. The work process is what is really interesting for me, not the results. It is like an adventure, a journey of research. I always find more questions. Thus, looking backwards, at my previous works, is hurtful for me. It is the discovering of the new which is really thrilling.

Are there the prototypes for your sculptures?

No. Since I don‘t work with models, it might seems as if I had a prototype for my sculptures. But it is rather that the human mind stores an image ofsort of an “ideal” human, maybe regarding its own person. It is probably why people often think I take myself as a model for my figures. I think my sculptures might have some kind of family association, but it is not intentional.

Do you engage assistants in your studio work? Do you think it is important to participate personally in the technical process of a new work creation after its idea has already taken shape?

I cannot and I will not delegate the work process.

It is the part of my work I enjoy most. Sometimes I have student assistants who help me with certain lower tasks, but they are few. The sculpting I always do myself. I like the freedom. Like the freedom the choice of material gives me. By using wood, I am able to do everything myself. I do not need to commission someone to do specific tasks for me.

Is there a key work in the Moscow show that renders its main idea?

All the works in the show are dear to me. I would not want to pick one over the other. They are all equally important. Maybe, some pieces demand more attention due to their presence, but all show dif-

ferent aspects of one theme.

Do you follow political news? Are there the works of yours that have the political background?

Yes, I do follow political news. However, to comment on the politics of the day with my art would be too trivial, I think. Politics in the broader sense, important decisions and developments, often are mirrored by the people. From this angle, I would definitely say that I have created works which backgrounds could be considered “political”.

For example the piece „Sempre piu...“ („More and more“) which was exhibited in Rome on the Forum Romanum. It refers to human exorbitance, the claim to the absolute, a hunger which cannot be satisfied. Consequently, it refers to the melancholy of this emotion: we can do whatever we want, accumulate money and treasures (or everything else, for that matter) but still, it will never be enough.

We want more. Such emotions are evident in society today: the financial crisis, a “casino capitalism”, to stick at nothing.

It is not a matter of moral judgement or evaluation, though. It is merely an observation: how is mankind? What really does drive man in life?

Many things can be political. Private matters for example, or freedom. It depends, as always, on the actual worldwide events.

Nowdays, Chinese, Indian and Arabic art generates a great public interest. Do you think it is because of growing might of these countries or it is adequate to the high level of its artistic merits?

I think it is a development due to an increasing liberality in these countries, when before there was no room for it. Also, we can find an art market where there was none before. This shows a growing self -­confidence which can only be embraced. When a country has many artists the people are able to relate to or identify with, this encourages both, culture and society.

Do other people’s opinion about your artworks bother you? Or is it just a struggle with yourself? Is such a thing as public recognition important for you?

Regarding being criticized: yes and no. It depends on who is the critic and how the critic puts it.

If the critique is ill­- founded, I do not really care. However, if I have the feeling that someone really has a point, I seriously consider the critique. When it comes to public recognition, I must say that it is certainly nice to be appreciated.

But here, too, it depends.

There are many people who like my work but do not understand it. Quality is more important than quantity. And you cannot relax on success. I am only as good as the next sculpture I am working on.

Do you enjoy travelling? Does it give you some new ideas for your future pieces?

I used to love to travel, about 20 years back. I literally absorbed the art and culture of foreign countries. However, different countries are looking more and more alike these days: everywhere you can observe the same kind of architecture, the same malls and shops, can buy the same things. There are no different cultures anymore, there is one global culture. Also, traveling has become very uncomfortable and stressful with all the security measurements. Therefore, I only travel to my exhibition sites. But I enjoy getting the most out of the experience as I can.

Have you ever been interested in the image of a Superman, glorified by German philosophy?

Or do you consider the man with his weaknesses and complexes is worth more to be incarnated in art?

I prefer a complex and fragile person over an „Superman“. That is simply more honest and real. It is impossible to be happy and content all the time.

That is not how life works. One needs the friction of the poles. Happiness, as freedom, is not static.

One has to redefine these things over and over again, has to conquer it. The image of the „Superman“ is an invention of American Hollywood movies.

Real life, however, does not stop with the „happy ending“.
