In the book Ficciones, Jorge Luis Borges tells the literary accomplishments of a certain Pierre Menard, a writer from Nîmes whose work supposedly dates from the first third of the twentieth century. Ignored by his contemporaries, this writer accomplished a heroic and unique feat: he wrote the ninth and thirty-eighth chapters—as well as a fragment of chapter twenty-two—of the first part of Don Quixote, making his chapters match, “word for word and line for line,” those written by Miguel de Cervantes. Neither a charlatan nor a madman, Menard rigorously applied an arduous technique in order to reconstruct, of his own volition, a work that had been spontaneously written three hundred years before. It was only his early death that kept him from completing his ambitious project of creating a reproduction indistinguishable from the original. This well-known story of Jorge Luis Borges expresses perfectly the desire that permeates an important part of the Argentine writer’s work: to enter and inhabit, through his writing, the distance that separates truth and fiction. It is in this same narrow but dense space that Vik Muniz has been developing his art throughout a decade and a half of intense activity. Basing himself since an early age on ideas woven with subtlety and ingenuity, Muniz has created a unique collection of works that reveal an unusual coherence of intent. Little affected by conventional distinctions between procedure and motivation, he has articulated diverse ideas and means in order to formulate a poetics of vision confronted with the gaps between reality and representation.

Two works, created almost at the beginning of his artistic career, together proclaim the central question that Vik Muniz would grapple with in the years to come. In one of them—Two Nails, 1987—a piece of photographic paper is pinned to the wall by a nail that pierces it. Printed on this same paper is the image of another nail—identical to the first—that also pierces it, but this time only virtually. In this work of simple construction, the artist asks, without presenting ready answers, what makes an image different from what it represents. In the series The Best of Life—made in between 1988 and 1990—Muniz reproduces, in charcoal drawings based only on his memory, photographs of human traumas and triumphs that have been reprinted countless times in newspapers, magazines, and books: the Vietnamese girl with her body burned by American napalm; an astronaut walking on the moon; the kiss in Times Square that commemorated the end of a war. Muniz then photographs these drawings and so creates a confrontation between this printed record of his memory and those memories that the viewer has of the same images. Through the

From here on, there are two basic procedures that give direction to Muniz’s work. Using ephemeral or fragile materials, and applying great skill in the construction of objects and drawings, Muniz recreates images drawn from the canon of art history or from current events: he reproduces Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper out of chocolate syrup; based on a record of the exhibition, he replicates a Donald Judd sculpture with dust taken from the Whitney’s halls and galleries; and with sugar he makes copies of photographic images (made by him) of children who live near the plantations that grow his raw material. He then photographs these perishable reconstructions and throws them away, keeping only the photograph. This method of remaking and then preserving the chosen images helps bring together different times and attributes. The material recreation of the originals is done slowly, with a craftsman’s art, calling attention to the way it was made. The photographic record, on the other hand, is instantaneous. It does not require any skill and it takes place at the exact moment when the camera shutter blocks, for the artist, the vision of the image he has created. By means of this operation both complex and candid, Muniz weakens the strong connection that one would expect to exist between the photographs and the images that inspired them, turning photography into a more opaque medium, forcing the observer to take more time to define what exactly is being represented.

After the vague but almost immediate recognition of images already seen elsewhere—a confirmation of these images’ longevity in our collective memory—the attention of a viewer facing Muniz’s work turns to the unveiling of the processes used in the recreation, provoking a prolonged and close involvement with the photographs that record the results of these constructions. When we come across a photograph of a Jean-Baptiste Corot painting recreated with delicate curls of thread, our gaze not only registers the subject, but also the unusual means by which Muniz represents it. The work’s very title—16,000 yards (Le Songeur, after Corot)—is an explicit reference to the amount of thread used in this careful reconstruction of a landscape painted a century and a half before. A similar interest is created when we

Muniz’s photographs of an Andy Warhol work recreated with black pepper, curry, red pepper, and cayenne pepper—the polyptych Liz—are particularly revealing of the decoupling that he provokes between the images that he creates and their referents. The silkscreen method of photomechanical reproduction—Warhol’s preferred technique—already took away much of the living presence of the people whom he chose as models (celebrities such as Marilyn Monroe, Jacqueline Kennedy or, in the work discussed here, Elizabeth Taylor.) Warhol diluted this human presence into the graininess particular to this type of reproduction and covered it with colors as varied as they are apparently random. The material that Muniz uses in his duplications of this work— where the grains of pepper mimic the dots of the original silkscreen, while his diverse colors evoke the tones of Warhol’s drawings and paintings and create numerous symbolic associations—weakens even more the presumed linkage between the memory of a well-known image (a movie star’s face) and its photographic reproduction, inserting a dense layer of meanings in between. In addition, the remembered image of Andy Warhol’s work (the colors, textures, and size) is confronted with photographs of its recreation made out of spices. Even more than Elizabeth Taylor, Warhol’s famous silkscreen is the referent of these photographs.

Muniz does something similar by reconstructing, in perfect models, works of land art made almost three decades before by Robert Smithson (Spiral Jetty) and Walter De Maria (Lighting Field) in order to photograph these models. He creates images that are very similar to the photographs in which these famous works survive today as art. He thus transforms what were originally records of interventions made in open space into referents for photographs: a series appropriately titled Earthworks in Brooklyn, Brooklyn being where Muniz has his studio. Through this subtle alteration of meanings, Muniz lengthens the perceived distance between the images of these environmental interventions and their physical existence in the places where they were created. The discomfort and fascination caused by the conceptual problems created by this kind of photograph—where the representation of an ephemeral or difficult-to-see work takes its place as an artifact of art—led Muniz to go beyond photographing miniaturized versions of well-known works of land art. He went on to make models of works supposedly made in the open air and photographed from above or from afar, much like those that he had already copied, except that these works had never actually been made. Furthermore, instead of images without any foothold in daily life—traditional in land art—these works always reproduced recognizable signs of everyday objects: a spoon, a clothes hanger, a pair of open glasses on top of an indistinct surface. Muniz also began making representations on a scale similar to that of the works that he had previously used as models, replicating the onerous procedures used in their construction. Using the equipment and open spaces of a mining area, Muniz drew in the sandy ground gigantic, iconic images of everyday objects that originally were modest in size: an envelope, a key, a pair of scissors. Taken by helicopter—since it is only from on high that these works become legible as images— his photographs record the simple drawings, purposely carved into the earth, and also their insertion into landscapes created over the years by the mine’s activity. tographing a model or photographing an image carved into the ground, Muniz not only makes explicit reference to contemporary experiments in land art and to ancient traditions of drawing in the earth (such as those of the Nazca Indians in Peru or the Celts in England), but also transforms these experiments and activities into meanings placed in between the images of the everyday objects used as models and the gaze of the person seeing his photographs. In these works—part of his series Pictures of Earthworks—objects of everyday, ordinary use take the place formerly reserved for the transcendent or sacred.

It’s interesting to note that, to a casual, layman’s glance, there is almost no possible distinction in process between a photograph of a drawing made with sand on a tabletop (of a clothes hanger, for example), and a photograph of a gigantic drawing made directly in the ground (of a key, for example.) Brought together by an illusory similarity in construction and by the similar size of the photographs, these works, shown side by side, confuse our gaze and put in perspective the observer’s own scale when faced with his or her surroundings. By creating a deliberate confusion about the sizes of the images that he chooses, about the material used to reconstruct them, and about the photographs that are the result of these processes, Muniz promotes a rupture in the idea of comparable scales in the world and makes this procedure an important part of the illusion that he tries to create.

Despite the interest awakened by such constructions or by the use of materials uncommon to art, Muniz is not using these procedures of representation in order to attenuate the viewer’s interest in the appropriated images’ subjects. Modifying what is usually expected from photography— generally seen as merely denotative—Muniz is really inducing our gaze to distance itself, for at least a little while, from the referents described in the photographs. He is suggesting in these remade images new meanings and a distinct rhetoric. By associating the content of the chosen images with the symbolic and formal properties of the processes and materials with which he reproduces them—and then making a photographic record of this tense union—Muniz is creating and perpetuating something that formerly did not exist. Instead of dissolving the subject’s importance, the careful investigation of the reconstructed images—stimulated by the charm or strangeness that they gain through their new form—lets us see once again, even if in a manner different from how they were previously known, scenes, figures, or things that have become invisible through their excessive familiarity. In spite of the alterations or additions of meanings provoked by the mechanisms used to reproduce these images, their iconic character is preserved in Muniz’s photographs. The enigma of Mona Lisa’s smile or the banality of a pair of binoculars is maintained in the reconstruction of these images with peanut butter and jelly, in one case, and earth, twigs, and leaves in the other. And even if the nature of the materials used to recreate these images sometimes makes them comic or “declassifies” them, the often transient nature of these substances ends up affirming, by contrast, the integrity of the referents that Muniz has used.

It is necessary to explain exactly what kind of illusionist Vik Muniz is. If he does not cover up his methods of construction—which can be mentally reconstituted by anyone looking at his photographs—he also doesn’t hide or disguise the origin of the images that he reproduces. An attentive viewer will identify the substances employed (whether ketchup, spaghetti, or ashes) and, to a varying degree that depends on the observer’s visual culture, he or she will also identify the original images. Without proposing new hierarchies,

Muniz simply confounds old meanings with new ones and tries to express, visually, “the worst possible illusion”: that which is effective and yet at the point of breaking up. Contrary to all the expectations that the word’s signification authorizes, Muniz is proposing an ethics of illusion, where what is hidden in one instant becomes evident the next.

The competing effects of discomfort and identification perceived all at once when facing Vik Muniz’s photographs—testimonies to the ambiguity with which he reintroduces, for all of us, the world’s visual repertory—depend largely on the careful articulation between the appropriated icons and the methods used to reproduce them.

Yet there are no set rules to create this synergistic meeting between message and medium. Sometimes, it is the images themselves, images which Muniz has become familiar with for various reasons, that indicate the most appropriate materials for their representation. This is the case with the series Sugar Children, where the substance used tells us something that was not explicit in the simple photographs that served as his model.

On other occasions, characteristics intrinsic to everyday materials make them fit to represent images dear to Muniz: since cotton lends itself to imitating clouds, it is used to create images “equivalent” to the famous photographs of Alfred Stieglitz; since thread is flexible and thin enough to reproduce intricate landscapes, it is the material used to remake vistas painted by Claude Lorrain or Gerhard Richter; and since wire works well to replicate in three dimensions simple images formerly drawn on a plane surface, it is wire that makes possible the change into physical presence of objects as varied as a light bulb, an ashtray, or a cage.

Yet the greatest interest of Muniz’s work lies not in explaining the images used, nor in the appropriateness of his raw materials’ formal aspects for the facts described in the images. It is the symbolic uproar created by the approximation between the works’ referents (immediate and distant) and the materials used for their reconstruction—allied with the surprising relations of scale with which they are often put together and enlarged on photographic paper—that make these photographs an excellent platform for the emergence of what images and materials separately cannot enunciate. Among the various works in which this tension emerges, some stand out for their eloquence. Such is the case with the series O Depois [The After], where prosaic photographs of street children, reproduced with trash left over from Carnival, force us to confront closely-related facts that the society that created them treats as distant. The disproportion of size between the trash and the images of the children when printed as photographs reinforces, by means of a different syntax, the work’s ambiguous meanings. Redoing a photograph of Sigmund Freud in chocolate sauce stimulates—almost as a parody or a cartoon—complex associations between desire and food, based on psychoanalysis, that today are objects of a supposedly sophisticated consumption.

In the same way, reproducing with modeling clay pornographic images taken from the Internet— works that make up the series Erotica—brings together the playful and the sensual. It mixes the fingerprints left in the clay with the marks on the naked bodies that they are reproducing, and it turns the bright colors of the synthetic material into a substitute for the varied tones of anonymous skins that rub against each other. Here too there is an evident discrepancy between the supposedly reduced scale of the images’ reconstructions, made with modeling clay, and the photographs of these reproductions, which are much bigger. What was the subtle touch of hands becomes, in the enlargements, a rough but plausible

Попеременно охватывающие вас состояния дискомфорта и отождествления, когда вы смотрите на фотографии Вика Мюниса, свидетельствуют о двойственности, с которой он заново представляет визуальный репертуар этого мира. Так как нить гибка и тонка, то для воспроизведения утонченных пейзажей, она является именно тем материалом, которым очень тонко можно передать виды, изображенные Клодом Лорреном или Герхардом Рихтером. Диспропорция между размерами мусора и изображениями детей работает на усиление неоднозначных смыслов работы. representation of broad brush strokes, turning these works into a link that optically ties together photography and the painted image. By separating from his photographs the “obvious” meaning of the images that he is appropriating—a meaning that reaches, in an unobstructed, clear way, even the careless observer—Muniz creates cognitive pathways for the emergence of the “obtuse” meaning embedded within them—a meaning alien to any realistic representation and one in a constant state of reformulation.

It is precisely because it is full of latent meanings that alternate and grow that Vik Muniz’s work, despite representing peoples and things of this world, refuses to belong to two of the principal systems of visual representation that have underpinned Western art ever since the Renaissance: idealist Cartesian perspective, the theoretical exponent of which was Battista Alberti, and the Dutch tradition of empirical, descriptive painting, of which Jan Vermeer is perhaps the greatest exponent. Even when he appropriates images based on the geometric idealization of space (works, for example, by Michelangelo Caravaggio, Giovanni Piranesi, or Albrecht Dürer), the mundane nature of the materials that Muniz uses to reproduce these images serves as a counterpoint to the optical illusion that the originals gave their viewers. Recreated with chocolate sauce, thread, or hundreds of pins, the duplications that Vik Muniz then photographs disorient our gaze and turn ambiguous the apparent distinction between the surface and the background of the scenes that they contain. Subverted by the artist’s slight of hand, the monocular, static narrative of the original images symbolically gives way to the malleability proper to the materials with which they are reproduced, opening themselves up to diverse collisions with the senses.

Analogously, the visual system inaugurated by seventeenth-century Dutch painting is also incapable of serving as a model for Muniz’s photographic representations. Even though this tradition of painting anticipated a few characteristics of his method of fixing images (photography)—such as the emphasis on fragmentary surfaces and arbitrary framings of a world that, primarily, is to be only described —the belief of these painters (Jan Vermeer, Rembrandt, Jan Steen) in the perfect legibility of the objects represented is incompatible with the cognitive ambiguity that Muniz’s works establish as typical of the world that they inhabit. When observed from afar, the photographs seem to clearly depict people and objects; when seen from close up—with our eyes seduced by the material—what is depicted on their surfaces is reduced to mere pins, food, dust, or some other substance, in an almost tactile approximation with the photographs.

More in agreement with the ambiguous nature of Muniz’s work is perhaps the visual system of the Baroque, different from the other two in assuming the opacity of the reality that it represents and the concomitant impossibility of portraying it precisely. Taking ambivalence as a value, Muniz does not try to reduce the visual experience to only one dimension, nor does he try to bring together the diversity of viewpoints that an image supports—the referent, the material in which it is presented, and its various meanings—into an impossible synthesis. Fascinated by the folds, fissures, and gaps that discredit the faculty of seeing, Muniz focuses on the disorientation of vision before that which it cannot take in ready-made, and on the almost ecstatic nature of the recognition of this insufficiency. He is thus betting on an observer’s lengthy engagement with his works and on the sensuality of contemporary visual experience.

(…) My very first efforts in photography were a kind of transition between the object and the image. I wanted the image to be as light and penetrating as an idea. Again, I was reluctant to make images because of my previous experience in advertising. The work of advertising is to fabricate identities for everything from talcum powder to nations and their arms, to give form to the shapeless and a timeless image to the transitory.

This sounds very philosophical, I know, and I still think advertising is a very important part of our culture. But I wasn’t interested in fabricating identities before I could find out for myself what identity is. How are we able to recognize objects in a picture, how are we able to recognize objects, period? Advertising made me aware of the dichotomy between an object and its images. This sort of tension has consistently been part of my work. Today I look at older works such as Two Nails, Tug of War, and Cognito Ergo Sum and see clearly this dilemma unfolding in my mind. Reality or representation? As soon as I discovered how similar these two notions are once they become visual information, I began to feel more comfortable using this polarity to my advantage. (…) I saw Lorenzo Ghiberti’s Baptistery gates, and no work of Renaissance art has had more impact on me. Here you have an exquisite mastery of perspective which is basically intellectual and illusionistic, combined with detailed relief work, which is highly physical and realistic. The two forms of rendering combined seemed to be simultaneously enhancing and canceling each other. The haute relief combined with threepoint perspective was definitely overkill, but it made my mind go beyond what I was looking at.

It made me think about vision as a process and not as a result. All of a sudden, I became aware of this incredible dichotomy, or real things and things that are images of things. That was when I started to play with ideas of reality and representation within a single narrative. Cogito Ergo Sum, Historical Photo, and Cozy Couple are pieces form this time.

Сегодня я смотрю на свои более ранние работы, такие как «Два гвоздя», «Клеймо войны», «Cogito Ergo Sum» и четко вижу эту дилемму. Реальность или образ? When I arrived in the United States in 1983, I spoke very little English and so initially did not make many new acquaintances. Reading the paper and watching TV were comforting because they were a way to participate in my new environment. I bought The Best of Life in a garage sale outside of Chicago. This book somehow made me feel safer. It made me feel more a part of the place where I was living. That “family of man” thing really works. I lost the book in the summer of ’88 on a beach in Long Island and felt really sad.

Immediately, it occurred to me that people do not keep picture book s like the Best of Life solely for the written content. They also keep them to check their memory of events against the photographs, just as they would peruse a family album.

During that summer, I began to check how much I retained from the experience of those photographs. At first, it was a pastime. I would wake up and work on a few images every day, and each day I would remember a bit more. When I could no longer remember anything, I began to call people (who didn’t have the images in front of them either) and ask specific questions. I discovered that people store images in radically different ways: their descriptions had a completely different structure than mine. The visual word is like a crossword puzzle: we all have the same puzzle but each of us solves it differently. I had developed from memory a few of the images quite well when Stux Gallery offered to show them as drawings. Once I’d transformed the image-memories into drawings, I thought they should be returned to their photo state. So I photographed the drawings. When they were ready, I printed the photos with the same halftone screen the original pictures were printed on. People thought they were seeing bad reproductions of photographs of famous events, but in fact they were only looking at pictures of thoughts. They were convinced by the photographs because they have the same syntax as the real photos.

It worked.

Для меня было открытием, что люди хранят образы в совершенно разных видах: их описания отличались от тех, что были у меня. Визуальное слово похоже на ребус: у нас у всех одинаковая загадка, но отгадываем мы ее по-разному. Я очень хорошо воспроизвел по памяти пару объектов, и тут мне предложили выставить их в Stux Gallery. Однажды я превратил свои мысленные образы в рисунки, и мне захотелось их сфотографировать. И я заснял их. Когда все было готово, я их распечатал. Получились фотографии, на которых были видны мельчайшие пиксели. When I made the Individual series, I had just come back from Europe with about $100 to my name. I had a piece of Plasticine, a camera, and some film—and no other materials for making art. I made a sculpture and like it, in a kind of «art therapy» style, but I used all the Plasticine and couldn’t buy more. So I took a picture of the sculpture, destroyed it, and made another. Pretty soon I had sixty pictures of the same lump of Plasticene conveying completely different moods.

Kim Caputo, a friend, offered to print them for me so I could jump-start my career, and we printed all sixty of them slightly diffused (like pictures of Barbara Streisand). I then exhibited them with pedestals of different sizes on the floor. People told me the photos evoked death, memory, and loss. I thought about my mood swings and how many crazy things the same lump of Plasticine can become.

Now, to answer your question, Fluxus and Dada are a constant intellectual source for my work, and yes, Man ray and Max Ernst are like gods to me. But when I made the Individuals, I was too poor to think about the bourgeoisie and the commodification of objects. Although they are ambiguous enough to contain a lot of ideas, that series is more personal than it might appear: I was dealing with a separation from my son and trying to survive as an artist.

In 1967, they took a photograph of the whole earth. You were there, I was there, all the dogs of the planet, believe me, were there. There’s nothing else to photograph. If you want to photograph something new, you have to make it first.

Stieglitz was definitely one of the most influential American artists. He spread himself thin but covered a lot of territory. He worked on many fronts and used many devices to help shape the artistic milieu of his time. He single-handedly introduced modern art to the American public. I usually use images from people I admire or find important in the context of general culture. I wouldn’t want to mock anyone, especially someone with Stieglitz’s mind and reputation. If you look at one of his Equivalents, you will get a glimpse of the ungraspable nature of sensations and the artificial ways in which meaning is fabricated. If you look at one of my Equivalents, you see – depending on the way you chose to interpret it – either a cloud, a lump of cotton, or Dürer’s Praying Hands. The title Equivalents was chose because the «clouds» has something to do with what Stieglitz was trying to say: that the objective of a photograph is not merely the portrayal of a subject, but the range of symbolic and emotional associations that the formal treatment of a subject will bring to the viewer. He treated the question by pushing it toward ambiguity. I decided to push it toward specificity.

I went to MoMA to see Stieglitz at Lake George, and I looked at his Equivalents. Clouds have always fascinated me because you can photograph clouds, and you can do anything with them. You can make an image of a cloud and an image of a seal at the same time. After Stieglitz did it a lot of people took pictures of clouds, but most of the subsequent photographs that tried to adopt a concept of equivalent to natural forms worked with stones. During the MoMA show, I thought a lot about equivalents – how Siskind, how West photographed rocks – and when I came out of the exhibition, the first thing I saw was the marble floor of the museum. It just came. Boom! Like this. That’s equivalency. I was looking at the floor of the museum thinking about the sky. At the same time, I’d be photographing the museum.

Photographing things in museums has always fascinated me.

As we know, duplicates and multiples have existed since the advent of machinery. In his work, Vik Muniz resorts to technology to make photography into his final product. For this reason, this draftsman and painter, and artist who utilizes the line or mixed media to finally put out photographic jobs in limited editions, always comes to mind. In doing so, Muniz is, simultaneously and schizophrenically, in step and out of step with his time as he adopts a strictly craft-like, handiwork procedure in his trade. For this same reason, the latent paradox between process and the instigating final product that makes up his work are always surprising and intriguing.

This is only one of the facets of Vik Muniz’s art production. As a draftsman, he comes forth drenched in poetry as his linework flows, out of sheer linearity, a simple piece of wire that renders, with the greatest economy, everyday objects such as the swing, a roll of toilet paper, or a light summer dress hanging from a clothesline.

These are images created for subsequent rendition into photographs, his final product. In the series shown here, in particular, he demonstrates that poetics is alive when one exerts technical skills, when an idea inspires a job, when there is a concept to be framed. The poetics also reveals an earnest attempt at fulfillment, notwithstanding everything, even the environment, which on occasion can be hostile to artists coming from Latin America to a macro center such as New York. A city that, nevertheless, respectfully acknowledges the artist who brings substantial baggage.

Landscape always has something to do with distances, surfaces, and textures.

I tried to take Pictures of Wire a step further and create a series of landscapes in which I would display thousands and thousands of yards of thread on a flat surface and photograph it with a large view camera.

The short depth of field that separates the foreground from the background sort of collides with the idea of a very spacious perspective

Alfred Hitchcock used Bosco for the famous shower scene in Psycho. Apparently, real blood does not look bloody enough on screen. There is a major difference between the «real» and the «realistic,» and sometimes the real thing does not make a persuasive representation of itself. I chose to work with chocolate because it had something to do with the feeling of painting. Chocolate inspires a multitude of psychological phenomena: it has to do with desire, sex, addiction, luxury, romance, etc. I have never met anyone who doesn’t like chocolate. Freud could probably explain why everybody loves chocolate. That’s why he was my first subject. I also wanted to make a drawing that challenged me in time.

It usually takes an hour before the chocolate starts to dry and only a few minutes for it to melt under the hot lamps. I had to run a lot and the studio can get messy at times.

The Sugar Children developed out of a very personal circumstance. I spent a few days in St. Kitts and swam every day with a group of local children who were very sweet and unspoiled by Nike commercials. I got to know their names and a few things about them.

They were very happy kids. Later on I had a chance to visit the place where most of their parents worked on the sugar plantations. The hard labor in the scorching sun had certainly taken a toll on their outlook. They were very sad and bitter.

I took photographs of the children and brought them back to New York, and one morning as I was drinking my coffee and looking at the pictures, I remembered this poem by the Brazilian poet Ferreira Gullar in which he is drinking coffee and begins to wonder about the origin of the sugar.

He ends with a seminal phrase: «It is with the bitter lives of bitter people that I sweeten my coffee on this beautiful morning in Ipanema.» The radiant childhood of those children will inevitably be transformed by sugar. Children who become sugar. It hit me like a brick. I went to Canal Street and bought back paper and tried to copy the snapshots by sprinkling sugar over its surface. I was very surprised when it worked.

In Vik Muniz’s work, the transparent is evident in the vapors and stratifications that allow the crystallization of the reproduced image. The photographic hardening is a magical and ritual consistency; it can pass through the traditional process, but also is concretized through a recourse to fantastical and unusual materials for photography such as sugar and chocolate, iron wire and dust, pantone, gelatin, which can give clarity to lights and shadows that form the images that document an event or a historical moment. In Muniz’s works in Venice [Pictures of Color and Pictures of Air], the condensation of the light that substantiates the portraits of artists from Chuck Close, Mark Rothko, or essential maps related to world events such as the birth of Darwin or the explosion of the first atom bomb, is obtained by resorting to the hardened composition of colors taken from the infinite range of pantone, or from the manipulation, through the introduction of air on a body of gelatin. The result is an unexpected and extraordinary photographic consistency, almost a ritual of technical and contemporary magic.

My grandfather never believed that a man had set foot on the moon. He thought the entire thing was cooked up in some sound studio in Queens. I never really endorsed his skepticism entirely, but while most people thought he was a bit crazy, I found something fascinating in the way he assimilated media. (He also had two television sets, a color one to watch the soap operas and a black and white one to watch the news).

While most people involved in the arts know what Spiral Jetty is, very few of them have actually traveled to Oregon to see the work.

I recently visited Angkor Wat in Cambodia and felt that while getting to finally see the ruin with my own eyes, I was also forced to erase an enormous amount of false but fantastic information that my imagination had used to construct the site in my head by piecing together all that I had found in the media about the fabled place. I always thought that the Earthworks movement was an exercise in media. When I first saw a picture of Spiral Jetty, the first thing that came to my mind was the amount of work that the artist had to go through to end up with that photo (which was actually taken by Nancy Holt). Smithson did not just build a swirly mound of soil in the middle of nowhere. By disseminating its awry presence through photographs, plans, drawings, and writings, he built a monument in our imagination, as strange and magical as Angkor Wat before being visited.

I am always trying to work in the gap between image and subject. The gap that exists between an environmental work and the images we see in the galleries representing these works is so great, it seemed like a perfect subject for me. First I thought it would be interesting to build models of the known sites in my studio and photograph them leaving parts of the set-up showing (I even thought of reproducing the moon landing in a Queens sound studio for my grandfather). That generated a series from 1998 that I called “Brooklyn NY.” About two years ago I decided to revisit the subject by exploring something that emerged as I was working on the 1998 models: the relationship between the model and the work itself. So I built several Earthworks in grand scale, some a few hundred meters each in an iron mine in Brazil, and then I built models a few inches long on the same site, with the same materials.

Then I photographed both the models and the Earthworks under the same light quality, enlarged the photos the same way, and exhibited them mixed together in a show in New York. With a bit of attention one could discern the models from the large works, but most people generally preferred to discard the possibility that there were any large-scale works at all (like my grandfather); others believed all the pictures were of large-scale works. Too confusing, some said.

It really worked.

In 2001, Muniz made his first Cloud Cloud skywriting drawings. These consist of simple line drawings of a cloud, executed in the blue firmament by a skywriting plane. Pictograms more than drawings, they represent the idea of a cloud.

But set up in the sky, the relationship between image, idea, and reality becomes jumbled.

Like the work of earthwork artists such as Robert Smithson, Muniz’ first Cloud Cloud was created in an unpopulated desert area in Arizona. He subsequently was invited to do the project in New York and has recreated it several times, including in Miami as part of this exhibition.

The Cloud Cloud projects have opened Muniz’ work up to a whole new public. Muniz has always stressed the viewer’s role as essential to the whole notion of art. Ironically, though he intended the line drawing in Cloud Cloud simply to represent a cloud, people have seen in it a host of other images, including a sombrero and a catcher’s mitt.

The public’s response becomes a demonstration of the urge to read forms into clouds that had first inspired his 1993 series, Equivalents.

In an allusion to cooking, every ingredient takes its time to cook. I try to work on two or three things at a time. Usually I choose projects that complement each other in some sort of way so I can swing from the challenging to the amusing. I would work on the Piranesi series , for example, which was very time consuming (almost a month for each picture and then take breaks to make small drawings or take on projects such as the Earthworks or portraits, projects that took me out of the studio. It’s the diversity of projects that keeps the work alive and fresh. It’s just like the exercise machines: if you only use one, you’ll become a monster.

Sometimes a great picture takes just a few seconds to make; sometimes the reward of seeing some insane enterprise you took on for a year finally makes its way to an exhibition and does as you expected in front of the viewers can be exhilarating. There’s stone carving and there’s ping-pong playing where years of training amounts to what can be done in a fraction of a second. Patience and spontaneity can be cultivated by different kinds of activities.

What I’ve been doing in this latest series of portraits is mimicking the mental inability to piece together those bits of information that make us know someone through the media, by literally composing portraits of «celebrities» at different levels from confetti-sized bits of paper punched out from magazines. My own failure in making a seamless likeness of the subject somehow reflects the chimeric aspect of familiarity in physiognomy. The subjects were chosen to try to create a full spectrum for the meaning of being famous.

There are movie stars, popular singers, literature laureates, presidents, sport legends, flower sellers, manicurists, and waiters; they are all people who became well known by using different media-from television to the street to word of mouth.

Pictures of Pigment harks back to some of Muniz’ earlier series, such as Sugar Children and Pictures of Soil, where he used a granular material as his medium. He composes his images by sprinkling a layer of differently colored powdered pigments over reproductions of famous artworks, such as Monet’s Cathedrals or Gauguin’s Pastorale Tahitienne, and then photographing them. The original works were rendered in oil paint, which is composed of powdered pigment mixed with linseed oil. Muniz’ images are oil paintings without the oil.

The enormous size of these photographs reminds us that while the works of Monet and Gauguin loom large in our imaginations, few of us know the true scale of the originals. We are used to seeing them in photographic reproduction, either reduced, as in books or magazines, or vastly enlarged, as in slides.

In Monads, as if translating the theory of the mathematician and philosopher Gottfried Wilhelm Leibnitz (1646 - 1716) on the nature of all things in the universe and the basic elements of reality, Vik Muniz creates simple and beautiful images with the repetition of funny and sometimes disturbing units.

Through the simple images of Monadic Works, we see Vik’s dexterity as a draftsman and his ironic humor, playing with objects as little as pennies or plastic toys. In Vik’s works the shift of scale forces the viewer to choose whether to focus on parts of the image or the image as a whole. The elements he used to create Small Change, Probability, White Rose, or Toy Soldier are a little bigger than those employed in his previous series. They are immediately recognizable and carry their own meaning.

Будто заново переосмысливая концепцию природы вещей, мироздания и основных элементов действительности, созданную математиком и философом Готфридом Вильгельмом Лейбницем (1646 – 1716), Вик Мюнис в своих «Монадах» строит простые и визуально привлекательные изображения при помощи однородных, смешных, а иногда и сбивающих с толку предметов. В «монадических» работах мы можем видеть мастерство Вика как рисовальщика, его ироничный ум, его игру с предметами не больше монеты или пластмассовой игрушки. Диапазон применяемых масштабов в его работах заставляет зрителя самому выбирать, на чем ему сфокусировать свое внимание: на изображении в целом или на его деталях. Rebus was the series that came right after Monads.

While Monads featured single types of toys, such as plastic figurines or bugs, images in the Rebus series feature a panoply of different types of toys.

“I think my work has been inspired as much by toy stores as museums,” Muniz has said. “I judge my maturity as an artist by my ability to communicate with children, to be like one of them.

You are only young once—but that can last a lifetime.”

A collector of Muniz’s work that was active in the diamond trade made a proposal to the artist: he would supply Muniz with a collection of diamonds with which to work, if Muniz would make some of the resulting photographs available to a charity auction. To Muniz, the glamour of the glittering diamonds seemed perfect for a series of portraits of film divas, women whose faces have been preserved “forever” in their films. The diamonds he worked with were actually quite small, but when the photographs were blown up, they gained an impressive size.

In addition to the allusion to Hollywood immortality, Pictures of Diamonds raises the question: Is a picture of diamonds worth more than a picture of chocolate syrup?

Muniz followed Pictures of Dust with Pictures of Caviar. Caviar is arguably as glamorous a medium as diamonds, but it is considerably more transitory. Muniz decided to picture a different group of Hollywood “stars”—monsters. As opposed to eternity, film monsters carry with them connotations of transformation, decay and death (since most die by the end of the movie), making caviar a suitable medium for their representation.

Трудно сказать, является ли икра таким же притягательным материалом для создания картин, как и бриллианты, но определённо она гораздо менее долговечна. Muniz’s most recent series is made by photographing enormous compositions of derelict materials. As in the Monads—only on a much larger scale—Muniz photographs the arrangements from an angle, requiring him to create a distorted image in junk which is “correct” only from the viewpoint of the camera. Again, although the designs read like two-dimensional images, items in the foreground are bigger than those in the background.

Both the images presented here, based on paintings by Goya and Caravaggio, reflect on the nature of junk: what it tells us about ourselves and what it tells us about our attitude toward the future.

Наиболее поздняя серия работ Мюниса представляет собой фотографии огромных композиций, выполненных из различного ненужного хлама. The technique employed in the Gordian Puzzles Series has a direct relationship to the idea of deconstruction and consecutively, the re-creation of objects by the re-assembly of their parts. This concept was of great concern by many important XX century artists. It is no coincidence that by creating a whole array of works in this particular technique, Vik Muniz takes as the starting point the corresponding experience of Russian constructivist Alexander Rodchenko. In photomontage and collage compositions Rodchenko developed the theme of correlation of dimensions and different textures. Using as the original image the advertising posters by Rodchenko, which are notable for their accented flatness and hard-edge graphics, Muniz breaks up these flat spaces into parts, and then remakes the original construction, adding volume and materiality to them, by documenting them in three-dimensional space,.

The photographs demonstrating these constructions virtually vibrate with topographic tension and contrasting volumes, inspiring a meditation on the process of simultaneous creation and destruction in the way we come to perceive an image. (See section «Russian Project»)

Техника Gordian Puzzles напрямую связана с исследованием идеи деконструкции и последующего воссоздания предметов из составляющих их частей. Эти проблемы были в фокусе внимания художников ХХ века. Неслучайно при создании целого массива работ в технике Gordian Puzzles, Вик Мюнис отталкивается от опытов в этой сфере российского конструктивиста Александра Родченко. В своих фотомонтажах и коллажных композициях он также разрабатывал тему соотношения объемов и различных фактур. Используя в качестве оригинала рекламные плакаты Родченко, отличающиеся подчеркнутой плоскостностью и жесткой графичностью, Мюнис «разламывает» эти плоскости на составные элементы, придает им объем, а затем с помощью игрового принципа «puzzle» воссоздает первоначальную конструкцию, но уже в трехмерном пространстве, в 3d-форматной модели. Фотография, передающая эти изображения, буквально вибрирует от напряжения и нагромождения объемов, провоцируя на размышления о возможности одновременного созидания и разрушения… (См. раздел «Русский проект»).

Time magazine called this artist one of the leaders of the new millennium while the New York Times recommended his works as a reliable tranquilizer.

For more than a decade, Vik Muniz (b. 1961, San Paolo, Brazil) has been intriguing the world with his creations marked by an amazing mixture of techniques, approaches, and interpretations of the surrounding reality. The history of world art for him is not just some dead past but the computer RAM (Random Access Memory) without which you can’t exist for a single day nowadays. This is the basis for his unceasing dialogue with his contemporaries.

The younger generation today turns increasingly less frequently to the “irrelevant” experience of the past.

Trapped as they are in the new technologies and the modern mass media, they have no time for the museums of classical art.

Muniz’s works revive their interest towards the history of painting, and they do so in a perfectly natural way, without even a hint of didacticism and moralizing. Using a number of works by past masters as his starting point Vik Muniz skillfully recreates them in utterly mundane modern-day materials and thus he obliterates the barriers between the ages so that these works cease to be just museum relics and come to attract a live interest from the most youthful viewer.

Muniz’s works, initially perceived at the superficial level as witty ambiguities, in fact raise a whole range of issues related to the perception of visual information, its presentation and its interpretation by the viewer. Characteristically for Muniz, he is constantly assuming new guises and switching roles, being successively an artist, a sculptor, simply a craftsman and then a photographer, a conceptualist, a joker, and finally a critic.

His work makes a natural part of the post-modern conception of our times. Suffice it to point out his perception of contemporary events as multi-layered texts, the so-called “pictures within a picture” (he had been interested in this approach from the start, see his “Two Nails”, 1987).

Muniz’s work is interactive. Apart from their aesthetic effect his works also provoke the viewer (in a positive sense) to ponder on the question how and what they are made of thus turning him into a co-author, or co-creator. It is very rare in art that this effect has such a concentrated embodiment. After the initial recognition, a moment comes when the viewer realizes that he/she is confronted with something completely different from what meets the eye first. The illusions conjured up by the artist, which have become his signature tune, brought him worldwide fame and recognition.

“Humor is a very serious matter for me,” says Vik Muniz. “It is precisely our sense of humor and certain visual tricks that determine our evaluation of a work of art. They trigger off that response in us which compels us either to linger in front of a work of art or go past it. From the moment you’ve managed to ‘hook’ the viewer you can allow yourself to display your depth and erudition to him.”

Vic Muniz has been part of our gallery’s program from our very first exhibition “We can do it!” His works provide a very clear set of instructions on the technology of the creative process, from the first stage when the idea has just been born to its final embodiment in a concrete object.

This time The Gary Tatintsian Gallery presents Vik Muniz’s “Russian Project” which reflects the view of a contemporary Western artist on the history of Russian artistic creativity. From the vast body of famous canonical works, beginning with icon painting and up to the Russian avant-garde, Muniz selected his own “hot dozen” giving preference to Malevich, Rodchenko, Vereshchagin, Vrubel, and Mashkov.

His choice is symbolic. Having paid his respects to the traditional painting (Vereshchagin’s “The Apotheosis of War”) and his tribute to the precursors (Vrubel and Mashkov) of the future “revolutionaries in art”, Muniz focuses on Russia’s main contribution to the world art, that is, Kazimir Malevich’s Suprematism and Alexander Rodchenko’s Constructivism. Both have had an enormous influence on world painting and anticipated the American minimal art and geometric conceptualism. To this day Malevich and Rodchenko continue to inspire contemporary artists to create works reflecting the spirit of the times.

It’s a paradox, but an interpretation by a contemporary artist may be closer to the modern man’s consciousness and more interesting to him than the original works created more than a hundred years ago.

Отталкнувшись от самых важных произведений мастеров прошлого, Вик Мюнис виртуозно воплощает их в настолько обыденных современных материалах, что напрочь стираются вековые дистанции, работы перестают быть только музейными ценностями и вызывают живой интерес самой юной аудитории. Работы Мюниса, воспринимаемые на поверхностном уровне как остроумные двусмысленности, затем поднимают целый комплекс вопросов о том, как идёт процесс восприятия визуальной информации; как она презентуется и как интерпретируется. Для Мюниса характерно постоянное перевоплощение, переключение с одной роли на другую: он то художник, то скульптор, затем просто мастеровой, потом фотограф, концептуалист, шутник, и, наконец, критик. Его работы полностью вписываются в постмодернистский концепт современности. Налицо, например, восприятие всего происходящего как многоуровнего текста, т.н. «картинка в картинке» (то, что интересовало Мюниса с самого начала: см. «Два гвоздя» 1987). Творчество Мюниса интерактивно. Кроме эстетического эффекта его работы еще и провоцируют (в хорошем смысле слова) вопрос, из чего и как это сделано, превращая зрителя в соавтора, сотворца. Очень редко в искусстве этот эффект имеет такое концентрированное воплощение. После первоначального узнавания наступает момент, когда зритель понимает, что перед ним отнюдь не то, что казалось на первый взгляд. Иллюзии, провоцируемые художником и ставшие элементом его фирменного стиля, принесли ему мировую известность и признание. «Я воспринимаю юмор очень серьёзно», - говорит сам художник. «Именно чувство юмора и определённые визуальные ухищрения провоцируют нашу оценку предметов искусства. Это они рождают тот отклик, который заставляет нас либо задержаться перед работой чуть дольше, либо пройти мимо. И с того момента, как вам удастся «зацепить» зрителя, вы можете себе позволить предъявить ему свою глубину и эрудированность». Вик Мюнис в программе Галереи с нашей самой первой выставки «We can do it!». Его работы – это очень внятный инструктаж по технологии творческого процесса: от стадии рождения замысла до его конечного воплощения в конкретном объекте. На этот раз в Галерее Гари Татинцяна будет представлен «Русский проект» Вика Мюниса, отражающий взгляд современного западного художника на историю русского художественного творчества. Из всего массива самых известных канонических вещей, начиная от иконы и до русского авангарда, Вик Мюнис выбрал свою «горячую десятку», отдав предпочтение работам К.Малевича, А.Родченко, В.Верещагина, М.Врубеля и И.Машкова. Выбор художника символичен. Отдав дань уважения традиционной живописи (В.Верещагин, “Апофеоз войны”), и отметив художников (М. Врубель и И. Машков), ставших предтечей будущих «потрясателей основ», Вик Мюнис фокусируется на том главном, что привнесла Россия в мировую историю искусств – супрематизм Казимира Малевича и конструктивизм Александра Родченко, так сильно повлиявшие на всё последующее развитие мировой живописи и предвосхитившие американский минимал-арт и геометрический концептуализм. Они до сих пор продолжают вдохновлять современных художников на создание работ, адекватных духу нашего времени. Парадоксально, но сознанию нашего современника гораздо ближе и интереснее может стать интерпретация современного художника, чем оригинальные работы, созданные сто и более лет назад.
