Мифология «искусственного реализма» Джорджа Кондо «Наступает новая реальность. Является ли она творческой игрой, рождением нового мира или возращением старого – человечеству еще предстоит разгадать». Х.Л. Борхес Новейший реализм Джорджа Кондо манифестирует и свидетельствует о предельных состояниях современной культуры, не декларированных традиционной живописной эстетикой, сообщающей мнимое благополучие и иллюзорный покой. Его странные и вместе с тем совершенно радикальные формы открывают критические состояния реальности, последнюю меру мира, его обнаженность и генетическое перекодирование, его виртуальность и искусственность, предлагающие новые возможности нашего существования. Пространственные парадоксы пластики Джорджа Кондо, где сталкиваются измененная реальность и изменившийся человек, «меняют» и наш визуальный опыт, заставляя более пристально вглядываться в феноменальность нашего присутствия в мире. Джордж Кондо предлагает на наш суд, и, может быть, нас на суд истории, новую «картину мира», где царствует заново рожденный человек, возвратившийся в рай, в идеальное самодостаточное пространство, построенное стремительным расчетом информационных технологий. В его сюжетах, сближенных с волшебным миром повседневности голландской живописи XVII века, продолжает жить своими естественными радостями новый человек, Адам и Ева, предаваясь любви, отдыху и традиционным заботам. Он наполнен энергиями, надеждами, его будущее не несет ему тревог, оно ему гарантировано и определено. Изменился только его образ, пронизанный новыми пространственными модулями, генетическими преобразованиями, открывшими абсолютную пластическую свободу его новой телесности. Она перестала быть закрепленной в неизменности своей «конструкции», исчезли, полностью редуцировались опорные точки телесного механизма, агрегатности, как говорили древние. Их «колесики» и «винтики» растворились в новом однородном теле, незнающим усталости, болезней и травм. Человеческое тело превращается в единую плазму, построенную в двоичной системе ноля и единицы в «пластических» пикселях, из которых складывается код цифровой репрезентации. Оно приобретает спо10

собность менять свои контуры, объемы и пропорции, масштабы, увеличивать размеры и протяженности согласно желанию. Его образ уподобляется реальной «машине желания», где бесконечная вариативность чувственных состояний обретает свое физиологическое пространственное соответствие. В нем, как в фокусе, сходятся идеи Леонардо, взгляды утопистов времен европейского Просвещения, мифологическая поэтика Байрона и Мэри Шелли, размышлявших о Франкенштейне, американская фантастическая мысль Брайна Олдиса о рождении человека в новой «инструментальности», способной осуществить любое его чувственное намерение. С этой художественной системой тесно связана пластика Фрэнсиса Бэкона, разрабатывающая феномен неутоленности человеческих желаний, приводящих к страданию и психофизическим деформациям. Отрицательный знак телесного, визуально введенный в мировую культуру Фрэнсисом Бэконом в девяностых годах прошлого столетия неожиданно меняется на противоположный – человеческое тело в виртуальных технологиях приобретает неограниченное количество комбинаций, позволяющих удовлетворить любое его требование. К этой точке зрения приходят одновременно Микеланджело Пистолетто, Мэтью Барни и Джордж Кондо, осуществляя построение воплощенной идиллии, искусственного Рая, оазиса реализованных возможностей непосредственно «здесь» и «сейчас». Живописное пространство традиционных систем в искусстве Джорджа Кондо теряет свое «внутреннее» превращаясь во «внешнее», становясь реальностью того же порядка, что и наше тело. Его искусственные слои зритель, и он же персонаж, не собирается покидать, проникая сквозь плоскость произведения в иные состояния – он уже находится «здесь» и полностью ему принадлежит. Оптическая реальность новейшего времени становится однородной и всепоглощающей, абсолютно единой с человеческим телом. Ее визуальная структура, способная описывать саму себя, превращается в целостный «тотальный объект», составленный из универсальных цифровых модулей, своеобразных кубиков, не знающих, как в буддизме, страданий и стрессов. Тело, живущее в его измерениях, органично принимает все его качества и достоинства, сжимаясь и увеличиваясь согласно различным степеням удовольствия. Художественные стратегии Джорджа Кондо наглядно демонстрируют исходную точку своей пластической репрезентации – аналитический кубизм. THE MYTHOLOGY OF GEORGE CONDO's «ARTIFICIAL REALISM» «A new reality is coming. It remains to be seen whether it will be perceived as an artistic game, as the birth of a new world or the return of the old one».

J.L. Borges George Condo’s modern realism manifests and exemplifies the extreme states of contemporary culture, which have yet to be defined by the traditional artistic aesthetic that usually conveys an illusionary state of peace and happiness. His bizarre and utterly radical forms reveal critical states of reality, such as the world in its penultimate stage with all its nakedness, genetic re-coding, artificiality and virtual qualities, which all offer new opportunities for our existence. Furthermore, the spatial paradox that exists in Condo’s plasticity, in which the transformed reality clashes with the transfigured human form, alters our own visual experience and compels us to peer more attentively into the phenomenon of our presence in this world.

George Condo offers us the opportunity to pass judgment, and perhaps even be judged by history, on a new «image» of the world that is ruled by a newborn man, who has returned to paradise – an ideal self-sufficient environment, which has been constructed with the expeditious calculations of various information technologies. The artist refers to his visual strategies as «artificial realism,» which formally retains the content and genre structure of a classical painting, but denies it the canonical iconology of the human image. His subject matter, which is reminiscent of the magical world of mundane scenes in the seventeenth century Dutch painting, consists of new humans, Adam and Eve, who continue to live with their natural joys and spend their time in love and relaxation, while occupying themselves with traditional everyday concerns. This new human being is filled with energy and hope, because his future is free of any anxieties, for it has already been guaranteed and predetermined for him. Only his image has changed, as it is now permeated with new spatial modules and genetic transformations, which have created an absolute plastic freedom for his new corporeality. The latter ceases to be limited to its unchangeable, rigid structure, while the points of support for the corporal mechanism, or its aggregates, to use the ancient application of the word, disappear or are reduced to a minimum. Their «wheels» and «pegs» dissolve into a new homogeneous body, which knows no fatigue, diseases or traumas.

The human body evolves into a single unified plasma that is created within the binary system of the zero and one, in which the ductile pixels form the code for digital representation. In essence, the human body acquires the ability to freely expand its dimensions by changing its contours, shape, proportions and scale. Its image becomes reminiscent of a cred-

ible «machine of desires,» in which the endless variation of sensual states acquires a physiological and spatial congruence. At its focus are the ideas of Leonardo; the views of the Utopians from the era of the European Enlightenment; the mythological poetics of Byron and Mary Shelly reflecting on Frankenstein, and the fantastical ideas of Brian Aldiss about the birth of man in new the «instrumentality,» in which he is capable of realizing his wildest sensual intentions. This artistic system is closely associated with Francis Bacon’s plasticity, which continuously develops the phenomenon of unsatisfied human desires and, in effect, leads to suffering and psychophysical deformation.

In 1990’s, the negative nature of the carnal image that had already been introduced into world culture by Francis Bacon, unexpectedly morphed into its opposite: a human body that is surrounded by virtual technologies and is capable of acquiring an unlimited amount of combinations with which to satisfy its various demands. Michelangelo Pistoletto, Matthew Barney and George Condo simultaneously arrived at this particular point of view, while processing and realizing the creation of the personified ideal or an «artificial paradise,» which can also be described as an oasis of realized opportunities in the «here» and «now.»

The painterly spaces of the traditional systems that are found in George Condo’s art lose their «inner sense,» while they transform into the «external» and enter the same reality that our body inhabits. The viewer, who is simultaneously a participant, does not shed these artificial layers, for he is already penetrating the flat surface of the painting into another reality. Essentially, he is already «here,» and completely owned by this reality. The optical reality of the modern era becomes homogeneous and all absorbing, and thus, is absolutely united with the human body. Its visual structure is capable of describing itself, while transforming into a complete «holistic object» that is comprised of universal digital modules and idiosyncratic cubes, which, similar to Buddhism, have no sense of suffering and stress. The body, living as it does in its own dimensions, organically accepts all of its qualities and accomplishments and, therefore, compresses and enlarges in accordance with the various degrees of pleasure that it experiences.

Condo’s artistic strategies vividly illustrate the starting point of his visual representation: analytical Cubism. This particular artistic movement, which arose from jealousy towards sculpture, as well as the desire to imitate the living corporality of this world, was intended, for the first time in the history of our culture, to restructure reality, as well as man, within its topography. The forms developed by analytical Cubism provided us with an opportunity to create spatial vectors with true energy that absorb the fragments of the subjective world and simultaneously formulate a homogeneous entity. This moment marks the beginning 11

Его формы открывали возможность порождать пространственные векторы, их реальную энергию, поглощая фрагменты предметного мира и формируя его однородную целостность. С этого момента открывается новая система отсчета в топологиях искусственной реальности – органическое взаимопроникновение внутреннего и внешнего, утраченное почти на столетие после открытий Поля Сезанна и вновь восстановленное в искусстве Джорджа Кондо. Она поражает своей визуальной явственностью, той неуловимостью наглядного, где абсолютно невозможно различить границы в иллюзии плывущего в непрерывности пространства. В новелле «Сарразин» Ролан Барт, идеолог новой мифологии тела как объекта, пишет: «Антитеза внутреннего и внешнего здесь уничтожена. Нутро опустошено». Действительно, философия Джорджа Кондо совершенно отрицает классическое понимание тела, где скрываются такие его внутренние измерения как психика, душа, анатомические «скрепления» всех составляющих человеческую физиологию. Его формы вполне могут являться полыми, свободно меняя свою внешнюю конфигурацию, не заботясь о внутреннем строении организма. Также как в абстрактной композиции свободно меняется верх и низ, передние и задние планы, Джордж Кондо в своей системе координат приводит человеческое тело к унификации форм, открывая принцип их неразличимости. «Искусственный реализм» Джорджа Кондо сбрасывает с себя оковы земного мира и груз его противоречий, он обретает счастье свободной любви, абсолютной сексуальности, где любящим органом способна стать любая часть этого искусственного тела. Его функции реализуются касаниями, тактильностью, счастьем чувственного. В этих акциях органы тела перетекают друг в друга как любящие существа, становясь субъектами в новом едином организме, обозначенном в новейшей культуре как «тотальный объект». Интегрируя в себе стилистические возможности классической культуры, стратегии Джорджа Кондо в сюжетах своих композиций демонстрируют всю эволюцию мировой художественной мысли, проходящую от раннего Ренессанса до наших дней. Любое движение клонированных персонажей Джорджа Кондо, любое изменение их форм мгновенно вызывает ассоциацию с искусством барокко, романтизма, модерна, дада, сюрреализма и даже поп-арта. Специально для проекта в Галерее Гари Татинцяна Джордж Кондо нарушает традицию малоформатных авторских произведений, презентуя свои классические сюжеты в двухметровой образности. Их герои 12

начинают свой пластический путь с абсолютно преображенного «розового» периода Пабло Пикассо, с его «странствующих комедиантов», персонажей живущих вне времени вечными «очарованными странниками». Они не подчиняются социальным законам и обязанностям, вся их жизнь протекает в драматургии любви, в естественных сближениях, превращенных в пластические взаимоотношения. Художник не скрывает своих технологий, открыто называя их «теорией сравнительных языков в живописи». Антропоморфная пластика Джорджа Кондо концептуально содержит в себе энциклопедию модернизма во всех его бесконечных вариантах и особенностях. Соблюдая всю свою субъективность, она наполняется сверхличным началом. В наглядности ее схемы просвечивает вся эволюция новейших течений актуального искусства, ее интегральность, непреложность ее процессуальной феноменальности. В ее свободной конструкции накапливается гравитация смыслов истории визуальной культуры, составляя волновой феномен времени, ее «бегущую строку». В ней разворачивается драматургия смены форм нашего сознания и нашего зрения. В ее слоях скрывается камера обскура, физика Исаака Ньютона, открытия генетики, новейшей биологии, технологии клонирования. Художник в своих измерениях превращается в естественный инструмент времени и пространства; он фиксирует все микроперемены организма культуры в его историческом развитии. Также как кардиограмма тождественно отражает сердцебиение, художник предупреждает о принципиальных изменениях в строении нашей цивилизации и ее духовной телесности. Джордж Кондо в этой концепции осознает себя воспринимающим и воспринимаемым, который не только «смотрит сам», но и, главное, «на которого смотрят» и к которому обращен взгляд сущего или его симулякра. Присутствие искусственной реальности в этом экологическом художественном поведении воспринимается как ее органическая жизнь. В ритмических состояниях нелинейного равновесия искусства Джорджа Кондо, в его «Existenial Portraits» пульсирует особая энергия, где «да» и «нет» не вступают в конфликт, не составляют драматизм «или–или», а структурируют новую реальность, объявляя своим манифестом «и то и другое одновременно».

The «figure» is only a way to describe an already abstract image, to reconstruct it or to deconstruct it, are basically the same – the way it is painted is what makes it interesting.

Condo. «Memories of Manet & Velasquez» Сatalogue, Galerie Jerome de Noirmont - 2004 of a new system of topological evaluation of the artificial reality, which is based on the organic interpenetration of the internal and external that had been lost for nearly a century after the discoveries of Paul Cézanne, but has now been resurrected by George Condo. This innovative system is not only stunning in its visual clarity but also in the elusiveness of the obvious, as it is absolutely impossible to distinguish the boundaries of the illusions that drift in a perpetual space.

In his novella Sarrazins, Roland Barthes, an ideologist of the new mythology concerning the body as an object, writes: «The antithesis of the internal and superficial is destroyed here. The entrails emptied.» In essence, the philosophy of George Condo completely refutes the classical understanding of the body, in which the inner dimensions of the mind and soul, as well as the anatomical «bonds» of all the elements that comprise the human physiology, are concealed. His forms can certainly appear to be hollow, as they freely reconfigure their surface without any concern for the interior structure of the organism. Condo, in his own system of coordinates, reduces the human body to a set of unified forms and, thus, reveals the principle of impalpability, which is akin to an abstract composition that freely alternates the top with the bottom, and the foreground with the background. George Condo’s «Artificial Realism» releases itself from the iron shackles of this earthly world, along with its heavy burden of contradictions, and inherits the bliss of free love and absolute sexuality, in which any part of the artificial body can potentially become an organ of love. Its functions are realized through touch, tactility, and the happiness of sensuality.

During these interactions, the body’s organs flow into one another as affectionate beings and become subjects in the newly unified organism, which in the modern culture is defined as the «total object.»

Having integrated the stylistic capabilities of the classical culture into the subject matter of his compositions, George Condo’s strategies illustrate the entire evolution of the world’s artistic thought, beginning with the early Renaissance and continuing through until the present moment. Any movements or alterations in the forms of Condo’s cloned personages, instantly evoke an association with the art of Baroque, Romanticism, Modern, Dada, Surrealism, and even Pop art.

In order to properly display this project at Gary Tatintsian’s gallery, George Condo purposely disobeys the tradition of small scaled, authorial works by presenting his classical subject matter in a large-scale format. His heroes embark on a fluid path within Pablo Picasso’s completely transformed «pink» period, which is filled with «wandering clowns,» who are characters that exist outside the realm of time as eternally «enchanted pilgrims.» They are

not subjected to any social laws or obligations, for their entire life transpires in the drama of love and in genuine encounters, which essentially transform into free flowing interrelations. The artist does not conceal his techniques, as he openly names them «the theory of comparative languages in painting.»

From a conceptual point of view, Condo’s anthropomorphic plasticity contains the entire encyclopedia of Modernism with all its infinite variations and particularities.

Furthermore, while preserving its subjectivity, Condo’s art is filled with an intimate beginning. The clarity of its design creates a translucent image of the entire evolution of the most recent trends in contemporary art and also displays its integrity, as well as the undisputable phenomenon of its process. More so, the free space within its structure has amassed the full gravitational force of the meanings regarding the visual history of our culture, which forms an undulating phenomenon of time or a «running line.» The drama of changing forms in our vision and consciousness unfold and evolve within this structure. Additionally, the layers of this structure effectively conceal the camera obscura, the physics of Isaac Newton, breakthroughs in genetics, cloning technologies, and the most recent developments in biology. The artist, within his own dimension, transforms into a natural instrument of time and space. Similar to the way in which a cardiogram records a heartbeat, the artist records all the micro-alterations that transpire within the historical evolution of the organism of our culture and, in essence, warns us about the principal changes that occur within our civilization’s structure and spiritual corporality.

In this particular concept, George Condo views himself as both the observer and the object of observation, for he not only «perceives» himself but also, and more importantly, is «perceived.» It is as if all the eyes of the living and simulacra are completely focused on him. In this artistic and ecological behavior, the presence of his artificial reality seems to exist in an organic fashion. Moreover, situated in the rhythmic states of the nonlinear equilibrium that exists in George Condo’s art, as seen in his «Existential Portraits,» is a unique pulsating energy, in which «yes» and «no» do not clash with one another nor do they create the drama of «either–or,» but, in fact, construct a new reality, in which they manifest the idea: «this and that simultaneously.»

Будущее живописи не может существовать в отрыве от прошлого, от тех наскальных рисунков, созданных в какой-то забытой пещере первобытным человеком и ставших частью этого будущего. I would think that the greatest fear of an artist is to be banished from the history of art; to be expelled from art history.

And that brings me to ask,

«What are the forbidden apples of art that should not be picked?»

Or is it what Cezanne showed us – that it’s the apple itself, once again, that needs transformation.

I think Cezanne’s apples come from Chardin’s still lifes.

These sublime apples were brutally transformed

by Cezanne into something that indicates various planes and shifting perspectives in a single painting, which as we know led to Cubism.

In effect, this is what I am talking about by introducing

simultaneous languages into one image.

But rather than ways of seeing, it involves ways of thinking; substituting mathematical formulas of perspective with a new system of perception which truly differentiates the word eclectic from dialectic.

You could call it a kind of harmonic resolution of opposites.

Для художника самый большой страх – быть вычеркнутым из истории искусства. В связи с этим у меня возникает вопрос: «Что же является тем яблоком, которое считают запретным плодом искусства?». Или, как показал нам Сезанн, этот плод постоянно нуждается в трансформации. Я думаю, что открытия Сезанна происходят из натюрмортов Шардена. Сезанн брутально преобразовал все прежние достижения в нечто, показывающее разнообразные плоскости и двигающиеся ракурсы в пределах одной картины, в то, что привело к кубизму. И это и есть интегрирование одновременно нескольких языков для передачи одного образа. В этом процессе размышление преобладает над визуальностью, математическая формула перспективы заменяется новой системой видения, которая проводит чёткую грань между понятиями эклектика и диалектика. Это можно назвать гармоничным сосуществованием противоположностей.

Condo makes sculptures less regularly than paintings…

The subjects of these works include trapped priest, a walrus, altar boys, opera singers and Madame Voltaire.

Never have hard metals looked so malleable.

The tension in these objects between material and subject – something very valuable used to describe faces that reveal, in each indentation, their vulnerability – blows predictable hierarchies of meaning and value to the wind.

Кто-то может сказать, что мои работы выглядят как будто Гастон встречает Монэ в формате Пикассо в мире Ceзанна. Но в конце концов я и считаю, что весь смысл живописи состоит в знании её истории. Хочется достичь той точки, в которой твои работы были бы итогом всего того, что было создано до тебя. Цель моего творчества в том и состоит, чтобы создать сумму всех видов искусства во вселенной.

…Mr. Condo is showing portraits of goofy imaginary characters assembled from cartoon cliches:

spherical noses, bug eyes, snaggled teeth,

rubbery ears.

The painting varies from faux Old Masterism to Magritte-like Surrealism

to bright,

50’s-style cartooning.

These are like jazz, too, in the way they take

a simple idea

and work it through all sorts of parodic changes.

Mr. Condo makes it look easy,

and that’s his charm.

…Кондо демонстрирует нам портреты рождённых его воображением забавных персонажей, навеянных карикатурными клише: со сферическими носами, «выскакивающими из орбит» глазами, торчащими как частокол зубами, пластилиновыми ушами. Стилистический разброс его работ варьируется от интерпретации Старых Мастеров до подобия сюрреализма Магритта и карикатур 50-х. Его подход к созданию портретов аналогичен джазу, когда берётся тема и затем разрабатывается с помощью многочисленных импровизаций и изменений.
