Learn more interesting facts about the Township of Ocean. Join us on Tuesday, May 25th at 7:30 P.M. in the Auditorium of the Oakhurst School for a Slide Show of Vintage Ocean Township. Bring your friends and neighbors. Admission is free, donations gratefully accepted. Refreshments will be served. _________________________________________________________________________

MUSEUM’S ANNIVERSARY DINNER

In the past 20 years the vision of a local museum has become a reality.

Make plans to help us celebrate this achievement at the Deal Country Club on Sunday, September 12th.

This celebration will help us kick-off our campaign to raise funds to restore the Woolley House and establish larger headquarters for our Museum.

On this occasion we will recognize our founding members and those whose leadership brought us to this anniversary. Our special guest of honor will be Senator Joseph Palaia, who was never too busy to help us promote our new museum and who obtained a $100,000 State Grant for the restoration of the Woolley House.

Tickets for the dinner will be $55 per person, which will include cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, dinner and dessert. A June mailing will give full details on the menu and reservations.

We are currently seeking luxury items for a silent auction (use of vacation homes, etc.); Members interested in working on the Dinner Committee can call Marge & Paul Edelson at 732-531-9187. _________________________________________________________________________

BRINLEY MILL HISTORIC SIGN RESTORED

A big thank you to Ken Richmond and Don Hasse for restoring the Brinley Mill sign.

For the past 30 years the sign hung on the west side of Monmouth Rd. near the border of Oakhurst and West Long Branch at the site of the former Brinley Mill. It had deteriorated severely and had to be completely rebuilt. After restoration was complete, Ken hung the sign again We hope it will last for many years to come.

SPRING TEA

The Museum’s Spring Tea on May 1 at the West Park Avenue Recreation Center was a smashing success. The Tea Committee transformed the room into an elegant tearoom with lovely china, colorful tablecloths, one of a kind teapots, and beautiful flowers.

Handmade quilts lined the walls adding to the ambience. Delicious tea sandwiches, scones with jam and cream, gingerbread, and assorted cakes and cookies were served all artfully arranged on interesting 3 tier plates along with many varieties of gourmet tea.

Assortments of handmade items were available for sale.

Total net profit was $1,808.80 all dedicated to the restoration of the Woolley House.

A big thank you to those members and friends of the Museum who supported this sold out event. We also thank Delicious Orchards for donating all the assorted teas that were served.

Some participants presented the Museum with additional donations for the Woolley House and one woman even paid for a “spiritual” table because she could not be present that day.

The Ocean Township Garden Club provided all the lovely centerpieces for all 25 tables.

We thank them so much for their generosity.

Last but not least we thank Lesley and Katy Dorsett, co-chairpersons for their expertise and hard work in organizing this very successful spring tea. Thank you to Marge Edelson and the quilters for producing all the craft items that were sold. Lesley, Katy and Marge, along with Marion Vogler, Joal Leone, Maryann Farry, Lois Landis, Cheryl Miller, Betty Wilderotter, Ann Stiles and Ginny Richmond all helped to make this a very special event.

Much appreciated help in transporting items and setting up and cleaning up the tearoom came from Paul Edelson, Richard Kurkjian, Doc Richmond, Phil Wilderotter, Tom Dorsett, Joal Leone’s son, and Bryan Quintrell who was visiting from Cornwall, England.

DUES

We thank all those members who have paid their dues for the year, 2004 and remind some of you that its never too late to keep your membership in good standing by sending in your check. Dues are $10.00 for an individual or household, $25.00 patron, and $100.00 benefactor.

NEW TRUSTEES

In April after our by-laws were amended, the following members were elected as new trustees: Kathy Brady—one year term to 2005.

Paul Edelson and Howard (Doc) Richmond—3 year terms to 2007 Peggy Dellinger—5 year term to 2009 Congratulations to our four new trustees who join Marge Edelson and Kay Zimmerer.

HONORARY TRUSTEES

In February, our first two Honorary Trustees were elected. Persons considered for this honorary position must have given noteworthy service or support to the Museum. This is a prestigious award and carries no responsibilities or duties.

Reba Eickhorn, who taught for many years at Wanamassa Elementary School, spent many hours after her retirement helping to establish our Museum. She was instrumental in arranging for the first of our 3rd grade school visits that still continue today. The Museum was dear to her heart and her loyalty translated into years of selfless service.

Sadly, Reba died in October of 2002 but she will be remembered always as an Honorary Trustee of the Museum.

Norma Eberhardt Dauphin has been involved with the Museum since 1984 when she responded to an article announcing a meeting to start an historical museum in the old Oakhurst Schoolhouse. She has used her knowledge, interest in history, and press connections to advance the cause. Norma was always able to ensure that our events received appropriate publicity. By making her an Honorary Trustee, we acknowledge the contribution her experience and commitment continue to make for the Museum.
