Notes NEW MUSEUM T-SHIRTS

Royal blue with white lettering shirts that say, “Township of Ocean Historical Museum” and sport a picture of the historic Woolley House are now available for sale in our Museum. The price is $10.00. We have sizes small, medium, large, and extra large. _________________________________________________________________________

EXHIBIT 2002

Our annual exhibit is scheduled to be held on Dec 6, 7, and 8 in the old Oakhurst School.

The theme this year is, “Old Fashioned Fun: 100 Years of Toys, Games & Local Pastimes.”

We are looking for toys and games dating from 1870 to 1970. In addition a mini exhibit featuring some of the history of the historic Woolley House will be presented. We are currently searching for photos taken on the grounds of the old homestead. WOOLLEY HOUSE

The contractor who will have the building moved must satisfy certain state requirements before this can be done. Some of our grant money that is designated for a new roof must be used before the end of this year. Therefore, a new roof will probably be added to the old homestead before it is moved to Joe Palaia Park. According to two roofing companies that have provided us with roof estimates, this will add to the strength of the old house. The old asphalt shingles on the roof are in poor condition with evidence of some deterioration under the shingles. In the older section of the house, a large portion of the plaster ceiling has fallen probably from water penetration. We recently met with our Township Manager to discuss the situation. After some additional investigation, the Township probably will prepare bids for a complete new roof. Grant money will cover this project. _________________________________________________________________________

APPLEBEES

Approximately 20 copies of our historic photos are on the walls of the new Applebees Restaurant that opened in June in Ocean Township. Take the time to look for them when you visit the restaurant.

MEMORIAL DAY PARADE

Our Museum’s brand new banner shown here was proudly carried by members, Mike Berzansky and Paul Edelson in the Memorial Day Parade. Other members marched behind it,some wearing period costumes and some wearing our brand new tee shirts that display a picture of our future museum. Members, Doc and Ginny Richmond were Grand Marshals of the parade.

RAFFLE TICKETS

Our reliable, competent Quilters have completed another lovely queen-size quilt called, “Glorious Friendship Star” to be raffled at our annual exhibit in December. All members are asked to help sell raffle tickets. Profits from our raffle are used to meet our operating expenses during the year such as telephone, office supplies, newsletter, postage, insurance, photocopies, photo frames, craft supplies, research materials, etc. Raffle books were mailed out to members recently. If you did not receive yours or you need additional books, please call the museum at 531-2136 or our raffle chairperson, Betty Wilderotter at 229-7687. Last year we sold more than 2000 tickets. Please help us beat that record!

ALSO—Help is needed for our raffle sales at various spots in or near our town. For these sales, we bring our completed quilt along to help sell the tickets. We want to have at least 2 members at all times manning our table. The following places are scheduled so far: Friday, Sept 20—Foodtown in Middlebrook Friday, Sept 27, ShopRite in Neptune.

Sat, Sept 28, ShopRite in Neptune Saturday, Oct 12, Manalapan Library, Archives Day (we have help for this day) Saturday, Nov 9, Firehouse on Deal Rd—Ladies Aux Craft Show Boscovs at Monmouth Mall—Dates to be announced Please mark your calendar now and then call Betty Wilderotter at 229-7687and offer to help at our table for at least one of the above dates. _________________________________________________________________________

OTHER FUNDING

In May we received a check for $500.00 from the Grand Marnier Foundation in Paramus in support of the historic restoration of the Woolley House. This is one of the more than 50 foundations that we have contacted. Our sincere thanks go to the Grand Marnier Foundation for their generosity and to our Grants and Funding Chairman, Doc Richmond.

MEMORIAL BRICKS

In December 2000, our Memorial Bricks fundraiser for the restoration of the Woolley House was introduced. Our members and the general public were invited to reserve a brick or bricks for a memorial walkway to be placed on the grounds of the new museum. We collected more than 130 reservations.

In June of this year, brick order forms were mailed to all those who had reserved bricks. In addition, forms were placed at Township Hall and other spots around town. We are very pleased to report that completed brick order forms with checks are coming in steadily. All checks received are being deposited into a separate account designated for the restoration of the Woolley House. The Atlanticville has included our bricks project weekly in their, ”Notes Around Town” column. We thank those of you who have responded so promptly to this project. These engraved bricks will become a permanent part of local history. If you need a form to order your brick or bricks, please call our chairperson, Paul Edelson at 732-531-9187 or the museum at 732-531-2136. One further note—please plan your brick carefully and then print clearly on the form. _________________________________________________________________________

3RD GRADE CLASSES

The Township of Ocean third grade classes will begin their field trips to our Museum on Tuesdays and Thursdays in October. Prior to visiting our Museum, Marge Edelson will conduct bus tours with each class pointing out to them the historic places in town. We have a dedicated, competent staff of museum docents who explain to the young students some of the history of our town and what life was like at home and school more than 100 years ago. If you would like to help with this program, please call the museum at 732-531-2136 or Ginny Richmond at 732-531-4295.

New helpers for this program are always needed and welcomed. _________________________________________________________________________

VOLUNTEERS There is a need for Tuesday afternoon help in the Museum. We have gotten some volunteers NEEDED through our ad that is still being run by Cablevision channel 70. One young high school girl came for several Tuesdays in June and July. She spent her time cataloging a good part of our book collection. This project still needs to be finished and then it needs to be entered into the computer. This past summer did bring in many visitors and sometimes, there are not enough museum members present to show them around or answer questions.
