not directly affect representation in the Connecticut State Legislature, they will lay the foundation for each town’s government and schools and, likely, become building blocks for state and national leadership in the future. Polls will close at 8 p.m.

Somers church is full of holiday cheer SOMERS — Celebrate this holiday season at the Somers Congregational Church, where several events will be open to the public. The annual Holiday Bazaar is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 7, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. More than 30 artisans, crafters and vendors will be displaying their wares for unique holiday gifts. ‘Son’Also Rises in Harford; ‘Keto Guido’ To Visit Mohegan By Gary Carra

Welcome back to Random Raven, the column that aspires to be nothing less than your complete, entertainment itinerary on a month-to-month basis. As we fall into...well, Fall, the temperatures may be waning and the nights growing longer, but Hartford's TheaterWorks is clearly having its day in the "son." For starters, the kick off to its 34th season, “American Son,” is already garnering rave reviews for its poignant portrayal of racial divide.

“It was important to me to open the season with a strong piece,” notes Producing Artistic Director Rob Ruggerio. “This story speaks so vividly to the shape of our world today. It will challenge and provoke our audience — and I hope, create an important and engaging dialogue with our community. It challenges our humanity and understanding of America as we know it today.” In addition to the proverbial lead off home run that is American Son, the historic Hartford venue is also boasting $5.7 million facelift this season.

Among some of the highlights regular patrons will notice are an expanded lobby and bar area, elevators and very highly anticipated new restrooms. I thank the skilled and committed town Robert Maynard employees and dedicated volunteers on our boards and commissions, who give life, direction, and service to our community. East Windsor was impacted from a storm the night of Oct. 16. Many trees were down, and some damage occurred. Power, the internet, cable and phone service were lost to many residents. Public Works and Public Safety personnel responded to critical situations and East Windsor is recovered and back to normal. Thanks to all who participated in bringing East Windsor back online. We have exciting things happening in

town. The annual scarecrow contest continues at Town Hall until Nov. 15. The 20th annual East Windsor Veterans Day 5K Road Race is Nov. 9. The event commences at 9:15 a.m.; the race begins at 10 a.m. at Town Hall, 11 Rye St., Broad Brook. East Windsor High’s Homecoming/ Senior Night. events include girls soccer (5 p.m.) and boys soccer (7 p.m.) Nov. 1, and a girls flag football game Nov. 2 at 6 p.m. The Nov. 5 municipal election will bring a new administration to East Windsor. It will be a time of transition, during which we should communicate, listen to each other, and come together to set our direction, goals, and priorities. East Windsor’s future is us. East Windsor politicians volunteered to bag groceries for “tips” that were donated to the local Power Pack Program that provides financial assistance to local charities. Democrats who will appear on the November ballot took on the morning shift. Republican candidates offered their

assistance during the afternoon. Celebrate veterans at Historical Society event

EAST WINDSOR — Join the East Windsor Historical Society in celebrating veterans from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 2, at the Museums on the Green, 115 Scantic Road. This event will feature special exhibits, including a World War II and Iwo Jima Traveling Museum, a reproduction of a 1942 BMW German Army Sahara model sidecar motorcycle, and a flyover of vintage planes by The Stars and Bars Team. The flyover time will be at 10:30 – 11 a.m. and after the flyover the planes will park at Skylark Airport, 54 Wells Road, so people can get an up-close view of the planes. In addition to the museum’s permanent military display, which spans from the Civil War through Vietnam, there will be a “Share Your Story” table for veterans and families to recount their experiences and a video of oral histories will be available. The book “Connecticut’s Rosie the Riveters,” by Gretchen Caulfield, national president of the American Rosie the Riverter Association, will also be available for purchase.

The “Stars and Bars Team” call the sky their home. Most of them not only share a deep passion for the freedom and expression of flying as an occupation, lifestyle, or recreational sport, but they believe in the preservation, restoration, operation, and education of history and historical artifacts that make us remember lessons of history. The aircraft that will fly over the Museums on the Green (weather permitting) represent all U.S. armed services and those who have or do serve. The aircraft are all over 80 years old and served and trained aviators between 1935 and 1945. They have been restored and are maintained and owned by private pilots who are retired servicemen or civilian pilots. They dedicate their resources to flying these aircraft for pleasure and sport. These men are volunteers who believe in “giving back” to those who served by flying in formation whenever they can answer a request from veterans’ organizations, municipal officials, or veteran related functions. used for war time reconnaissance or training. They also prepared pilots for either assignment to bomber or fighter groups. The aircraft served at Army, Navy, and Marine Bases and also at British Allied Royal Air Forces Bases on three continents during WWII. The WWII and Iwo Jima Traveling

‘Sweet 16’ for Winterfest ELLINGTON — The Ellington Winterfest will be celebrating its 16th year of holiday frolic on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 4 to 7 p.m., at Ellington’s gazebo green bordered by Main and Maple Streets (Route 286 and 140) and Church Street. As visitors await the arrival of Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus, Frosty the Snowman, and Rudolph-the-RedNosed-Reindeer, the Tree-Lighting Ceremony will be kicked off by welcomes from town officials followed by seasonal music from Tim Adams and the Center and Crystal Lake School choruses Santa and his clan will be available to pose for pictures during their presence on the town green, so parents are encouraged to bring along a camera. At 5:15 p.m., Santa and company

will board their sleigh for the Torchlight Parade. Featuring festooned fire trucks from around Connecticut, floats, and merry marchers, they will wend their way down Main Street from Berr Avenueto the fire station. Ellington businesses and organizations that wish to participate in the parade must contact the Ellington Volunteer Fire Dept. for permission to do so. Visitors are invited to enjoy many other attractions in and around Ellington to celebrate the holiday season. On Friday, Nov. 30, the Ellington Singers kick off the Winterfest with their annual Holiday Concert at Hall Memorial Library at 7 p.m. with refreshments served afterward.

Homestead Celebrates 30 Years in Business

Homestead owners Jeff and Dale Gerber hosted an anniversary celebration Oct. 18 at their business in Ellington to thank those who supported them over the last 30 years. The business has been at its current location at 100 West Road for the past 22 years. Their inspiration came from their father who owned Gerber Brothers Motorium in Vernon with his brothers in the 1950s and ’60s. Homestead began in 1989 providing heating, cooling and plumbing services and expanded to include home energy audits, insulation services, duct sealing, generators, geothermal and of course fuel oil. They acquired Shaw’s Pump in 2015 and in 2017 created their Home Energy Services division. The Gerbers spoke at the celebration recalling the work their dad had done over the years. Rep. Chris Davis was also on hand and presented them a citation from the General Assembly. - By Deb Stauffer

Winterfest gears up for full day on Dec. 7 (continued from page 15)

Red Sox Service Scholarship Elizabeth Gerlach of Ellington High School was recognized as a recipient of the Red Sox Service Scholarship during a pregame ceremony at Fenway Park before the Red Sox-Tampa Bay Rays game on July 30. The program awarded students from public high schools across New England with $1,000 scholarships towards their college education. A total of 210 public high school graduates from Vermont, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Maine, and Connecticut were awarded scholarships this year. Eastern Guitar Ensemble The Guitar Ensemble at Eastern Connecticut State University is amid its fall 2019 season of performance. Among the ensemble members is Nicholas Ford of Ellington, a member of the Class of 2023 who majors in music. Community Thanksgiving Dinner The Crystal Lake Church at 278 Sandy Beach Road in Ellington hosts its annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28. Join in for a free dinner of turkey with all the trimmings including desserts. Servings will be from noon to 2 p.m., but you may socialize after. If you would like to take part, call the church at (860) 872-0798 to ensure that there is enough food for everyone.

On Saturday, Dec. 7, there will be a full day of festive activities in many venues around Main and Maple Streets (Rts. 286 and 140) in Ellington: Hall Memorial Library will conduct its annual Ornament Workshop for three sessions beginning at 10 a.m. (free tickets available Nov. 18). Also at the library, scenes from “Charlie Brown Christmas” will be performed by the Opening Knight Players at 5 p.m.; musical selections by Windermere Instrumentalists at 5:45 p.m.; musical selections by the Ellington High School Chorus at 6:30 p.m.; and a holiday card-making workshop, sponsored by the Crystal Lake Community Church, from 5-7 p.m. Refreshments will be served throughout the evening by the Library Board. Meanwhile, parents are reminded to place their child’s name in the box at the library, beginning Nov. 12, for a chance to be chosen as one of Santa’s Helpers in lighting the town trees. One young boy and one young girl are selected for this special honor each year. The Nellie McKnight Museum on Main Street will be open for tours from 3-6 p.m. and will feature a “step-backin-time” handweaving demonstration on Nellie’s floor loom with samples of her weaving available for viewing. Next door, the Ellington Congregational Church will offer its annual Vendor & Craft Fair from 10 a.m.-3 p.m.; Bell Choir & Christmas Carol Sing in the church sanctuary from

3-3:50 p.m.; the beautiful Labyrinth Walk (illuminated with luminaria after dark, weather permitting) from 3:306:30 p.m.; and the Winterfest Café, in their Social Room, will offer a “family friendly” menu, with continuous seating from 4-6:30 p.m. On Maple Street the Senior Center will feature its annual Vendor & Craft Fair from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. At 2 Maple

Ellington Unlike four years ago, a full slate of candidates for first selectman, Board of Selectmen and Board of Education fill the Ellington ballot. First Selectwoman Democrat Peggy A. Busse will challenge Republican incumbent Lori L. Spielman, who ran uncontested in 2015. Selectmen Ellington voters will choose four candidates from a list of seven contenders for Board of Selectmen. Six current members of the Board of Selectmen hope to retain their seats: Republicans John W. Turner, James M. Prichard, Ronald F. Stomberg and David E. Stavens, and Democrats Sarah D. Cook and Melinda M. Ferry. Democrat Jaime S. Foster, currently a member of the school board, is vying for a Board of Selectmen seat as well. Board of Education Voters will choose five out of six candidates running for the Board of

Education. The choices include incumbent Republicans Michael Young and Kerry Socha. Democrats Elizabeth Nord, Miriam Underwood, Aaron Foster and Jennifer Mullin are also on the ballot. Polling places District 1 – Ellington High School (37 Maple St.) District 2 – Crystal Lake School (59 South Road) Enfield Street corners are filled with more varied campaign signage than usual throughout Enfield this November, since a third party has emerged, adding to the slate of candidates for municipal seats on the Town Council and Board of Education. The Voices of Enfield party adds to the Democrat and Republication affiliations, formed after the secession of about a dozen members of the Enfield Democratic Town Committee in August. Three candidates from the newly formed affiliation are running for the school board, one is vying for an atlarge seat on the council, and a third hopes to become a town constable.

Town Council Ten candidates are looking to fill the seven at-large posts on the council. Seeking re-election are incumbent Republicans Mike Ludwick, Joe Muller, Carl Sferrazza and Lori Unghire, as are current Democrat council members Gina Cekala and Bill Kiner. Democrats Cindy Mangini and Jacob Nadeau are also hoping to gain at-large seats, along with Voices for Enfield challenger Colleen Ann Reidy and petitioning candidate John Santanella. ENFIELD — Twenty-six Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society members, including a student from Asnuntuck Community College, will have their writing published in the 2019 issue of PTK’s online literary journal, “Nota Bene.” Five of the students will receive scholarships for their exemplary entries. “Nota Bene” showcases the outstanding writing of Phi Theta Kappa members. More than 550 entries were submitted to the 2019 competition, which is judged by current and retired college faculty and staff from across the country. The digital issue will be available at ptk.org this winter. Victoria Orifice, a student at Asnuntuck, will have her writing piece “In Miles Per Hour, the Speed of Light is, Like, a Lot” included in the journal. “Asnuntuck Community College and the New England Region of Phi Theta Kappa is so proud of Victoria. She is a talented, intelligent woman

CERT promotes a culture of preparedness

SOMERS — Somers Community Emergency Response Team members participated in a joint emergency shelter simulation exercise Oct. 16 at Somers High School, the designated location for residents who are displaced and need a safe place to stay during an emergency event. CERT members arrived at 6 p.m. and the public participated in the event from 7 to 7:45 p.m.

“We simulated the opening of the shelter for a major emergency such as a blizzard, hurricane, or tornado,” CERT Team Leader Karen Hocking said. “We set up the shelter for pets and people the way we would for real,” she added. Somers acting Emergency Management Director Jeff Bord and Hocking led the simulation exercise supported by their specialized team of town officials (e.g. town clerk, Public Works, and Animal Control), police officers, firefighters, teachers, and

other skilled professionals. CERT members set up a mini version of the shelter to include an administrative and management structure, played roles of citizens needing shelter (to include “domestic” pets), and ran through problem scenarios. “We had community members participate — pretending that they were coming to the shelter to stay,” Hocking said. “Some came as families, some by themselves, some with pets. It gives us a chance to practice, learn and improve on operating a shelter, so if it happens for real – we are ready.” An after-action review concluded the activity. CERT’s AAR summarized the exercise events and analyzed performance of the tasks identified as important during the planning process, assessing team members’ performance effectiveness. CERT has conducted shelter drills in Somers since CERT began in 2010, founding CERT member/Shelter Manager and Somers Town Clerk Ann Logan said. “We are concerned about

our people here in Somers. We pride ourselves in constantly learning and improving so we can function in an emergency. I have a passion for helping our town’s people and I love what I do.” There are approximately 15 active members of Somers CERT. CERT members who participated in the Oct. 16 drill included: Hocking, Jeff Bord, Eric Boucher, Todd Rolland, Paula LaFrance, Bill Hocking, Logan, Ann Levesque, Frank Poirier, Dave Dunn, and Pat Loftus.

Somers Fire Chief, John Roache, a member of the Somers Emergency Management Team, also participated in the exercise. All Somers CERT members are DHS and FEMA certified emergency response volunteers. Training for new volunteers will be scheduled once a full class of at least 10 is achieved. CERT, Emergency Management spring into action after storm

SOMERS — The Somers Community Emergency Response Team joined forces with Somers Emergency Management to provide comfort to a community stunned by the strongest storm to ever impact the area in October, per the National Weather Service. According to Eversource’s Regional Power Outage Report of Oct. 17 at 11:32 p.m., Somers has the highest number of homes without power in the state — 781 homes or 19.02% of Somers’ Eversource customers, reduced from a high of 2,792 customers or 68% affected by what the National Weather Service coined as a “bomb cyclone,” also known as an explosive cyclogenesis. Somers CERT and the Somers Emergency Management Team operated a warming/charging center at the Somers Fire Department, 400 Main St., on Oct. 17 from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. and continued the operation on Oct. 18 from 6 to 9 a.m. After that, the operation was turned over

to the town until shut down of the warming/charging facilities at noon. Storm recovery continued via the Department of Public Works and Eversource. All residents were welcome at the facility. All who were experiencing power outages or needed to charge electronic devices or fill water containers were encouraged to stop by, warm up, and get the latest updates and communicate with fellow towns folk. Residents were reminded to bring their device cables and water containers with them. Coffee, water and bathroom facilities were available for all in need. Automotive Preparation key to keep rolling through the fall season

Autumn means shorter days, colorful foliage, football season, and shaking one’s head in disbelief at stores putting up their Christmas displays before Halloween. And with the change in seasons come changes in driving conditions — temperatures drop, and many parts of the country start to see an increase in rain, ice on the roads, and even a bit of snow. Here are three ways to make sure that your car is ready for the fall.

Check your wiper blades It’s easy to take your wiper blades for granted, but they’re one of the most-used pieces of equipment on your car. Windshield wiper blades do wear down with use and age – and even if you don’t use them often, hot, dry weather can speed up wear. Autumn is a good time to replace them; your new blades will get you through the fall, winter, spring and summer. Knowing when to replace them is relatively easy: they’ll streak or even leave large patches of moisture when used, and they may even “chatter” as they move across your windshield. The blades themselves are made of rubber or silicon, and they can wear down to the point at which the hard plastic or metal of the wiper arm is making contact with glass. And that can damage the windshield. Replacing the blades is a simple process; your local auto parts store will carry a range of blades, and will be able to help you find the blades that will fit your your car. Check and change fluids As temperatures cool, it’s a good time to make sure that all of your car’s fluids are clean and topped off. When temperatures drop, the fluids in your car can become more viscous, or thicker – which may cause them to move more slowly through the engine. It’s especially good to drain and replace your coolant if you live in areas that experience extreme temperature swings from summer to fall and into winter. Coolant isn’t just coolant – there’s water added to it, and that ratio of water to coolant will typically be higher in the summer. In the winter, the ratio of water to coolant should be 40:60 (or 40% water, 60% coolant).

Check tires Your tires are perhaps the most important part of your car. As you head into icy road season, you should make sure that the tread on your tires is still up to par. There’s an easy way to do this: Insert a penny with Lincoln’s head upside down and facing you into your tire’s tread groove. If you can see all of Lincoln’s head, it’s time to replace that tire. First Selectman Republican incumbent Bud Knorr, who has served as first selectman since former First Selectwoman Lisa Pellegrini resigned in May 2017, has his eye on a second full-term in the office. Stafford High schools benefit from 3M, Asnuntuck partnership

Asnuntuck Community College and 3M are continuing its partnership thanks to a generous grant awarded to the college. Asnuntuck, which has worked with the company on providing student interns, was granted portable mechatronics labs from 3M’s Manufacturing andAcademic Partnerships program. The equipment is valued at $150,000. The college is pleased to be able work with Enfield and Stafford High Schools to incorporate Mechatronics into their 2019-2020 curriculum. Mechatronics is a multidisciplinary branch of engineering that focuses on the engineering of both electrical and mechanical systems. It also includes a combination of robotics, electronics, computer, telecommunications, systems, control, and product engineering. Each high school will have use of the equipment onsite at their facility for eight weeks. The other 36 weeks, ACC will utilize the equipment for different

needs. The college will be able to take these portable labs on the road for corporate trainings, demonstrations, and work with students on and off campus. Stafford Public Schools Director of Curriculum Steven Autieri toured Asnuntuck’s Advanced Manufacturing facilities. “Stafford Public Schools is honored and privileged to be able to form such a meaningful partnership with Asnuntuck Community College and 3M to bring the Mechatronics program and instructional resources to our community,” Autieri said. “This partnership will help us to continue to examine our STEM pipeline pathway and ways that we can support all of our learners." First selectwoman Current First Selectman Melissa Mack is running for the position unopposed. Selectmen Only one of the following candidates for selectmen will not gain a seat. Voters will choose four selectmen from this slate of five: Incumbent Republican Timothy J. Reynolds and Republicans Kathie Harrington and Jerry Mahoney, and Democrat incumbent Mel Chafetz and Democrat Peter Hill. Voters will choose five board members from this slate of six: Incumbent Democrats Jamie Drzyzga and Brian Fry, Democrat James Moi and Republicans Scott R. Polling place Suffield Middle School (350 Mountain Road, Route 168) Vernon The only race for mayor in the NCN area promises to be one of the most watched contests. Vernon voters also have a long list of candidates, both vet-

eran politicians and newcomers, to choose from throughout their ballot. Mayor Both candidates are seasoned politicians. Incumbent mayor Daniel Champagne (Republican), who first came to the position in 2013, is being challenged by Democrat Claire Janowski. Champagne is also the state senator in the 35th District. Opponent Janowski is a former member of the Vernon Town Council who has occupied a seat in the state House of Representatives over a number of terms. She is also the only local candidate in the NCN area who has an entry in the online Wikipedia reference site. Town council Voters will choose eight names from a long list of 16 candidates, evenly split between Democrats and Republicans. The candidates include Republican incumbents: Bill Campbell, Steve Wakefield, Laura B. Bush, Steven C. Peterson, Julie Clay, Jim Tedford, Brian R. Motola, and Michael D. Wendus. Democrat incumbents seeking re-election are Pauline A. Schaefer, Thomas A. DiDio and Ann Letendre. Addition Democrats on the ballot are Jesse Schoolnik, Rachel Stansel, and Julia Anderson. Board of Education Voters will choose two of four candidates who are vying for a four-year term

on the board. These are current Republican chair Anne H. Fischer and Republican incumbent Steve Linton, and Democrats Kristiana Wintress and Latasha Hyatt. Voters will also choose two of four candidates who are vying for a two-year term on the board. These are Republican incumbents Patricia E. Buxton and Linda B. Gessay, Democrat incumbent Kevin Brown, and Democrat Jennifer Buckler. Polling places District 1 – Northeast School (69 East St.) District 2 – Rockville High School (70 Loveland Road) District 3 – Skinner Road School (90 Skinner Road) District 4 – Vernon Center Middle School (777 Hartford Turnpike)

First selectman Democrat incumbent Christopher Kervick faces Republican Board of Finance Chairman Paul Harrington for the top municipal seat. Selectmen Democrat incumbent Michelle L. Hill is being challenged by former town attorney and state Rep. Scott Storms, a Republican. According to the Hartford Courant, Republican Selectman Ricardo Rachele is not seeking re-election due to recent surgery and wanting to spend more time with his family. Board of Education In the only contest for a seat on the Board of Education, Democrat vicechair is being challenged by Republican Paige N. LaTournes. An update on Bridge Street School

First Selectwoman’s Corner

In our annual insurance review of Town of Suffield properties, CIRMA informed us that it may cease covering the vacant Bridge Street School based on its current state. Despite recent town efforts to heat the building with space heaters and hiring a roofer to mitigate leaks in 2018, recent pictures posted on the town’s website show a blighted building permeated by black mold, crumbling asbestos, peeling lead Melissa Mack paint and collapsing ceilings from over fifteen years of deterioration. This announcement begs an important determination – begin work for the proposed community center or demolish the building? There were 1,176 residents who voted by referendum to appropriate $8.4M to convert the BSS into a community center and authorized the issuance of no more than $8.4M in debt to finance the project in October 2015. The vote was not a mandate to do the project at any cost, but a permissive authorization to do the project if it complied in scope and dollar amount with the information presented by the Bridge Street School Ad Hoc Committee to the public, and

the legal bond authorization upon which the residents relied to cast their votes. For a chronology of the due diligence process the town followed since 2015, please see the News section of the Town of Suffield website at www.suffieldct.gov. On Oct. 16, in light of the facts and circumstances and the condition of the BSS, Selectmen Hill, Reynolds and I voted to refer rescinding BSSCC authorization to Town Meeting, to demolish the building and issue an RFP for installation of athletic playing fields and a playscape on the site. Despite the vote of the selectmen, BSS’s future will rest ultimately with residents at Town Meeting and likely, referendum. Looking forward, School Superintendent Van Tasel, the town planner, Parks & Recreation Director and I are scheduled to discuss town-wide facilities planning and proactive maintenance to broadly address community needs. Gym space is an acknowledged issue for the schools and P&R. A coordinated solution could leverage and improve our current assets while streamlining functions and cost. This collaboration will prove an opportunity entering budget season and provide the Advisory

Commission on Capital Expenditures with a strategic vision for its 10-year plan and for forecasting future bond issuances to achieve level debt service for Town taxpayers. Notably, debt service on the high school 20-year bond ends in 2021/22, freeing up borrowing capacity. I am determined to keep momentum moving to improve Suffield’s infrastructure and amenities and am grateful to have a collaborative partner in our new superintendent and the incumbent Board of Education. I’ll close by saying, thank you for the privilege to serve as Suffield’s first selectwoman for another term. Election Day is Nov. 5. Polls open 6 a.m. - 8 p.m. at Suffield Middle School. Strong candidates from both political parties have volunteered their considerable time and talents to serve Suffield. Please take a moment from your busy schedules to exercise your important civic duty and vote for the candidates who represent what you want for Suffield’s future.
