What’s good for the goose is ... Broad Brook

Canada geese by the thousands being reported at the pond

EAST WINDSOR – An unprecedented number of Canada geese seem to have taken over the Broad Brook Pond area this year.

“They’re common to abundant here in Connecticut year-round,” says Tom Anderson, director of communications for the Connecticut Audubon Society who explained that although Canada geese do migrate north and south each year, more and more are staying put in urban and suburban areas year-round, settling especially around high grasses by water edges. In flight, they fill the sky with long V-formations. Their honking can be heard from miles and miles.

According to the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, the year-round resident geese that breed in the state are distinct from migratory populations that nest in northern Canadian provinces.

Most migrant geese that occur in Connecticut breed in Labrador, Newfoundland, and northern Quebec, arriving in Connecticut in early October.

Migration continues through November with another peak number of migrants arriving in mid-December.

Most migrant geese leave the state by mid-January to continue further south. However, in years with

Regional ‘Kindness permeates the building’ at Broad Brook Elementary School (continued from page 1)

School took part in the national Great Kindness Challenge by dedicating each day of the school week to an act of kindness.

At the elementary school students shared extra compliments, thank-yous, and high-fives as the week progressed.

Assistant Principal Matthew Ryan said this is the fourth year the system has participated in the national event, but he emphasizes that “kindness” is a yearround focus at the K-4th grade school.

“Kindness humanizes us,” says Mr. Ryan.

A brightly decorated bulletin board in the school hallway proves his point. On backgrounds depicting the seasons, staff members tack individual notes about kindnesses their students have enacted or received.

In the fall section the notes are leaf-shaped. In the winter section paper ornaments and snowballs commemorate such deeds as “A second-grader helped clean up in the lunchroom when she was not even asked....”

“Kindness permeates the building – the teachers too,” Ryan said.

Hearts of Kindness in Locks Across the river, the Windsor Locks Public Library encouraged patrons to inspire kindness in February with its Hearts of Kindness Program.

Library-goers of all ages were invited to decorate “A Kind Hearted Tree” in the main reading room with red hearts, upon which they wrote compassionate messages.

Gloria Malec, director of the library, came up with the activity.

“We wanted to help inspire people to think about others and themselves by writing a kind word or two.”

Malec says she enjoyed watching young and old patrons alike ponder over messages they placed on the tree.

“A Kind Hearted Tree” sprouted in the main reading room of the Windsor Locks Public Library.

Lions Club has perfect vision with this initiative

ELLINGTON – The Ellington Lions Club recently conducted free pediatric vision screenings for over 950 children pre-K through third grade for Windermere, Center, and Crystal Lake schools and local day care centers.

This is the second year volunteers from the Ellington club have donated their time as part of a nationwide Lions Club initiative called “Lions Kidsight USA.” Its mission is to provide free vision screening to children as early as 6 months to 6-plus years.

The screening is done using a handheld Welch Allen Spot Vision Screener.

The process requires no eyedrops nor contact with the child and takes less than a minute to produce a detailed report.

The camera screens for common pediatric vision problems including near and far-sightedness, lazy eye, blurred vision, eye misalignment, unequal refractive power, and unequal pupil size.

Of the over 950 children screened, there were almost 100 children whose test indicated a potential vision problem and who were referred to follow up with

Kindergarten registration takes place this month

ELLINGTON — Registration for all Ellington children entering kindergarten in September will be held the week of March 9-13.

Parents can navigate to the Ellington school registration page to begin the process at home: https://www.ellingtonpublicschools. org/parents/registration Between March 9 and May 15, age and residency verification for the following year will take place at the zone elementary school.

After May 15, or for registration in the current school year, age and residency verification will take place at the Central Office, 47 Main St. A birth or baptismal certificate showing a date of birth is required by state statute before any child can be registered in a Connecticut public school.

Additionally, parents or guardians also must provide documentation of residency in Ellington.

To be eligible to register for the 202021 school year, a child must be 5 years

old on or before Jan. 1, 2021.

WASHINGTON – Dr. James Lombella, north-west regional president of the Connecticut Community Colleges and Eileen Peltier, dean of workforce development and continuing education for Asnuntuck, Northwestern Connecticut, and Tunxis Community Colleges, traveled to Capitol Hill in February to represent the 12 Connecticut Community Colleges as part of a 2020 Skills Summit organized by the National Skills Coalition.

They were joined by Connecticut Community College regional presidents Drs. Rob Steinmetz and Thomas Coley at the advocacy event, which draws leadership in post-secondary education, community-based programming, and labor from across the country.

Lombella and Peltier met with staff from the office of Sen. Richard Blumenthal and Rep. Joe Courtney to provide updates on the community colleges and seek support for Pell grants for students in noncredit programs that provide industry licensure and credentials.

“This was a great opportunity to talk with legislators about supporting Connecticut residents who are pursuing their education by giving them better access to financial aid funds for noncredit and short-term community college programs that are critical to our

‘We have more reptiles than the Bronx Zoo’

Riverside Reptiles Education Center preparing to open on South Road

ENFIELD – The first time I called Brian Kleinman at his new place of business, he couldn’t come to the phone because he was busy moving an alligator to its 6,000-gallon concrete pool.

By the time I caught up with him a few weeks later, the alligator, now accustomed to its new home, had been joined by a variety of tortoises and turtles moseying around their open displays in the main exhibit hall of the Riverside Reptiles Education Center in Enfield.

Located at 132 South Road, the site – which, through the past 50 years has operated as a supermarket, rental equipment supplier, and day care center – is still in the process of being renovated into its most unique enterprise yet: a living classroom meant to educate people about how to better understand and appreciate snakes, lizards, crocodiles, turtles, and tortoises.

Kleinman has long sought a “home” for the coldblooded species he takes on the road to schools, libraries, and parks in outreach programs.

“Now I can take all the animals out of my house

and my wife can have her basement back,” says Kleinman, who grew up in Barkhamsted in the 1980s and ’90s.

“We didn’t have any malls nearby, so I hung out in 6000 acres of state forest,” he said.

Summer camps at Roaring Brook Nature Center in Canton led him to major in biology at Franklin Pierce College in New England.

With all creatures, great and small, to choose from, what led Kleinman to focus his life’s work on coldblooded, scaly reptiles?

“I’m fond of animals that are misunderstood,” Kleinman says. He adds, “There’s nothing like this center in 150 miles. We have more reptiles than the Bronx Zoo.” Kleinman hopes to open the reptilian nature center

Big Y is increasing its presence in Ellington

ELLINGTON – The major building project going on across the street from the Big Y World Class Market on Route 83 in Ellington is an extension of that supermarket brand, on what used to be a parcel of farmland.

The Big Y supermarket chain is adding one of the company’s latest trademarks – a Big Y Express – to the area, 12 years after having opened the World Class Market across the road.

The plan includes installing six gas pumps spread out on three islands, a 12,755-square-foot building, and a satellite building further back off the road.Part of the larger structure will serve as a convenience store which will house a branch of a local bakery – LuAnne’s – and a drive-in window for easy access to fresh coffee and home-made baked goods. Luann’s, located 1½ miles up the road, will remain open.

Tenants are still being sought for endcap space in the main building and a smaller structure behind the convenience store and gas pumps.

Matt D’Amour, Big Y’s senior director of store development said, “We’re looking for the right tenants,” hinting at the possibilities of restaurants and a fitness center.

A Big Y Express, located across Route 83 from the Big Y World Class Market in Ellington, is expected to be open in June.

Kissel: WL students deserve credit for keeping railroad station progress on track

WINDSOR LOCKS — “Students from Windsor Locks Middle School's History Club have helped to make history.”

That was the reaction from state Sen. John A. Kissel to the news that Connecticut has received a $17.4 million grant from the Federal Railroad Administration to construct a new Hartford Line railroad station in Windsor Locks.

Kissel, who represents Windsor Locks, praised federal, state and local officials for their efforts to obtain the grant.

“We have spoken consistently with one united voice on behalf of this project, and we kept it on track.”

Kissel also noted how students from Windsor Locks Middle School's History Club presented a $4,000 check last spring toward the restoration of the Historic Train Station. The students raised the money at the annual Heritage Day Festival. “‘Save the Train Station’ has become a rallying cry in this town, thanks to the Windsor Locks Middle School students who have been so committed to the station’s rebirth. Last year’s Heritage Day Festival attracted a record number of sponsors and vendors,” Kissel said.

“The students’ fundraising effort was inspiring, it should not be overlooked, and it exemplified how everyone has been ‘all aboard’ for this fantastic transit-oriented development in Windsor Locks. This federal infusion of funding is welcome news which will bring positive long-term dividends to north-central Connecticut.”

Kissel pointed out how at last year’s Heritage Day, Windsor Locks Middle School recognized the 100th birthday of Gov. Ella Grasso, who was born and raised in Windsor Locks. Grasso boarded a train at the station for her January 1975 inauguration at the State House.

“Windsor Locks cherishes its history,” Kissel said. “And this project will marry that proud history with a bright future. I think Governor Grasso would be thrilled with the students’ efforts. What a fitting tribute to her legacy this investment will be.”

No need to squawk: 7th annual Chicken Run is coming soon

VERNON — On Sunday, April 5, Strong Family Farm in Vernon is hosting its 7th annual 5K Chicken Run. This has become a favorite community event at the Farm. Runners can participate in a 5K run or 1.5-mile walk and a ¼ mile kids fun run.

Budget presentation on horizon; exercise your mandate and vote SOMERS – The Town of Somers has completed our fiscal 2021 budget, which will be presented at the April 21 public hearing presentation C.G. Bud Knorr for voters’ comments and input.

The annual town meeting will follow on May 5, with the budget referendum scheduled for May 12.

Voter turnout is critical in the democratic process, especially when it involves spending taxpayers’ hardearned money.

Citizens’ approval of a proposed $35 million budget deserves input because it involves essential town services like schools, public safety, roads, and other important services that affect all of us.

Past budgets have been approved with less than 15% of registered voters taking the time to vote.

We can and should do better than this to ensure the continuation of the quality of life in Somers.

Please exercise your mandate and vote.

Veterans Center opens in Windsor Locks

Former Selectwoman Michelle Hill got to work organizing a neighborhood resource for local veterans four years ago.

“In the last year the wheels moved quickly,” Hill said as she watched a steady stream of veterans and well-wishers visit the grand opening of the Windsor Locks Veterans Service Center earlier this year.

The center is located at Town Hall, 50 Church St. The new organization seeks to provide guidance to local military veterans and a connection through community activities.

“The key words in this mission are ‘guidance’ and ‘connectors,’” Hill said.

These and other resources were on hand at the grand opening: the US Department of Labor, VA Employment and Training Service, American Legion, the PTSD Elizabeth Dole Foundation, and Veterans of Foreign Wars, among others.

Taking a fresh new look at used cars

StatePoint – Even as more Americans turn to the used car market for affordable vehicle options, a recent survey suggests that outdated notions about used cars persist.

Consumers not only think that used cars on average are older at the time of sale than they actually are, but also less expensive, according to an Ally Financial survey of more than 2,000 American adults conducted by The Harris Poll.

On average, the survey finds that Americans think the average age of a used vehicle at the point of sale is 6.6 years, but the 2019 Edmunds Used Vehicle Report puts the average age at four years.

The Ally survey also finds that on average, consumers believe that the average price of a used vehicle is $9,860 when it’s actually more than twice that amount – $20,664 – according to Edmunds.

“Even though many Americans are buying used cars, the survey shows many people lump all used cars in with old clunkers,” says Matt Arnold, senior regional vice president of Auto Finance at Ally.

“It’s time to let go of old stereotypes. With a used vehicle, you’ll either end up with a lot more car for your money, or a lot more money in your wallet,” Arnold said For those shopping for a used car or considering doing so, Arnold offers the following tips: • Prioritize needs and wants: Think practically about which features are necessary. Some nice-tohave tech features add to the price and can cost thousands of dollars in repairs if they break.

• Get a vehicle history report: The minimal cost is worth the investment, and some car dealers will provide it for free upon request.

Town plans business mixer

STAFFORD — The Town of Stafford and Stafford Economic Development Commission are initiating a series of biannual business development networking activities.

The inaugural event — the Stafford Business Development Mixer — is a business-to-business afterhours networking reception.

The purpose is twofold: foster professional connections while broadening the business community’s understanding and involvement of the Stafford EPA Brownfields Assessment program.

Additionally, town staff will provide updates on projects planned and in progress.

The Stafford Business Development Mixer is scheduled for 5:30 to 8 p.m. March 25, atFour Seasons by the Lake at Sun Valley Beach Club, 51 Old Springfield Road.

There will be an interactive presentation at 6 p.m.

Refreshments and light hor d'oeuvres will be provided by Four Seasons by the Lake. There is no admission fee and there will be a cash bar.

This event is designed for Staffordbased businesses, land and property owners, developers and entrepreneurs.

More than networking, the evening will provide those taking part with the opportunity for you to learn, ask questions, and offer input about the Stafford Brownfields initiative.

This program aims to decreases blight, remove environmental contamination and reinvigorate redevelopment within Stafford.

Overarching goals are to preserve attractiveness of our community, increase growth of employment and tax base, and improve the overall quality of life in Stafford.

Brownfields are sites that are, or may be perceived to be, contaminated.

Brownfields are vacant and underutilized properties previously used for industrial or commercial activities that may have resulted in contamination from petroleum or hazardous substances.

Often seen as eyesores, these sites may stall an area’s progress and development.

Brownfields can also be seen as redevelopment opportunities with the potential to transform community liabilities into assets via revitalization activities that bring new life to an area.

An assessment provides property owners or developers with historical and environmental information to determine if the site is contaminated and, if there is an issue, can identify what is necessary for redevelopment and at what cost.

The EDC Business Development series will be offered biannually and the March 25 event is a steppingstone to learn about current business needs in Stafford in order to effectively provide valuable resources and learning opportunities in the future.

The program is community based in order to provide rapid and safe care for our residents and to provide support to the town’s emergency personnel in the event of a major incident or large scale disaster.

Bereavement support group A bereavement support group offered through Masonicare Home

Health & Hospice and Suffield Community Aid, 450 South St., is scheduled to begin April 17.

If you have experienced the recent death of someone dear to you, you can join others in a supportive setting.

Participants will meet to share stories, learn about grief and discover how to support one another in a safe environment.

The goal of the program is to seek “the new normal.” The loved one will always be remembered and it is possible to have joy again — over time.

The group is slated to meet at the Suffield Community Aid location over six sessions: April 17 and 24, and May 1, 8, 15 and 22.

The bereavement group sessions are scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m. and end at noon.

Gabrielle Zeller and Kyle Englander were two recent ShopRite honorees from Suffield High School. Principal James Blain noted that Zeller was the ‘go-to person’ in the school’s Toys for Tots Campaign a few months ago.

Art teacher Kerri Michaud-Bagley, nominated Englander based on his initiation of the World Language Honor Society clothing drive that sent donations to Mexico earlier this year.

According to the Enfield High School website Tina Lamontagne recently received the Kindness Award for “always being ready to invite students to work with her or her group and her willingness to move her seat from a group to sit with someone all alone.”
