Enfield train station project on track for possible groundbreaking this year ENFIELD — After decades of planning, a long-awaited passenger rail station in Enfield is moving closer to construction, with state officials expected to seek bids in 2026 — a key step toward restoring rail service to the town for the first time since 1986.

The proposed station in the Thompsonville section would be part of the Hartford Line, a 62-mile corridor linking New Haven, Hartford and Springfield, Massachusetts, that launched expanded service in 2018 but did not initially include a stop in Enfield.

EWPD graduates third Citizen’s Police Academy class EAST WINDSOR — The East Windsor Police Department recently celebrated the graduation of participants from its third annual Citizen’s Police Academy, an eight-week program designed to give residents an inside look at modern policing and strengthen relationships between officers and the community.

The 2026 academy began March 23

and concluded May 11, with weekly evening sessions held at the department’s annex on School Street.

Participants received instruction from East Windsor officers and staff on a range of topics, including patrol operations, police accountability, traffic stops, use of force, criminal investigations, interview and interrogation techniques, wellness initiatives, and the depart-

ment’s SWAT and Crisis Negotiation Team operations.

Police officials said one of the most valuable aspects of the program was the opportunity for residents to interact directly with the officers who serve the community each day.

“The feedback has been tremendous,” the department said in a statement.

“Most importantly, participants had the opportunity to meet many of the officers who protect and serve their community.

We look forward to running the academy again next year.”

Citizen police academies are offered by departments across the country as a way to improve transparency, build trust and educate residents about the day-today realities of law enforcement.

Programs commonly include instruction on investigations, patrol procedures, use-of-force policies, emergency response operations and community policing efforts.

According to the East Windsor Police Department, classes were largely taught by in-house personnel and were open primarily to East Windsor residents, although out-of-town residents could also be considered if their hometowns did not offer similar programs.

The Citizen’s Police Academy has continued to grow since its launch three years ago and has become part of the department’s broader community outreach efforts, which also include cadet programs, CERT initiatives and public safety education events.

Ellington Conservation advocate Jim Gage selected for town’s Wall of Honor

ELLINGTON — Longtime conservation advocate and Ellington resident Jim Gage has been selected as the newest inductee to the Ellington Wall of Honor in recognition of his decades of work preserving the town’s agricultural and open-space character.

The announcement was made following the May 11 meeting of the Ellington Board of Selectmen, where Gage was unanimously chosen for the honor.

A resident of Ellington for more than 60 years, Gage was nominated by Town Planner Lisa Houlihan with support from several additional references.

One of the original members of the Ellington Conservation Commission, Gage has played a major role in numerous preserJim Gage vation efforts throughout the region. His work has included collaborating with conservation organizations, securing funding, preparing sites for acquisition, and helping develop long-term preservation strategies with local, regional, and state agencies.

Town officials credited Gage as being instrumental in establishing the Ellington Farmland Preservation Program, which has helped protect hundreds of acres of farmland in the community.

In addition to his work on the Conservation Commission, Gage participated in the last three decennial revisions of the Ellington Plan of Conservation and Development.

He also serves as a member of the Northern Connecticut Land Trust, volunteers with the Connecticut Chapter of The American Chestnut Foundation, and serves on the MassConn Sustainable Forest Partnership Steering Committee.

According to a published article from the Connecticut Chapter of The American Chestnut Foundation, Gage was described as “quiet, smart, competent, hardworking, respectful and humble ... incredibly productive ... the ultimate team member.”

Officials said Gage has long worked to connect organizations and create collaborative partnerships focused on environmental stewardship and conservation.

A formal induction ceremony will be held Saturday, Sept. 12, at 4 p.m. at the Wall of Honor site in Arbor Park off Main Street in Ellington. The event is open to the public.

Toastmasters demo Residents looking to build confidence, sharpen communication skills and strengthen leadership abilities will have an opportunity to experience a globally recognized program firsthand in June. A free demonstration meeting hosted by Toastmasters International is scheduled for Saturday, June 6, from 11 a.m. to noon at Hall Memorial Library.

The event will offer a glimpse into how Toastmasters meetings operate, including prepared speeches, impromptu speaking exercises and constructive feedback sessions to help participants improve in a supportive environment.

Toastmasters International is a nonprofit educational organization that helps people develop public speaking and leadership skills through clubs worldwide. Members progress at their own pace through structured learning paths, practicing everything from organizing presentations to thinking on their feet. Attendees will have the chance to observe experienced speakers, participate in interactive portions and learn how local clubs support growth.

The event is free and open to the public; advance registration is encouraged.

Karaoke Night Crystal Lake United Methodist Church will host a community karaoke night fundraiser on Saturday, June 20, featuring music, food and entertainment for local residents.

The event will run from 6 to 9 p.m. at the church, located at 278 Sandy Beach Road in Ellington. Admission is $10 per person and includes food.

Organizers said the event is designed to bring the community together for an evening of fun and fellowship while supporting church activities and programs.

Attendees will also have the option to pay through Venmo using a QR code available at the event.

Trails Day Hike The Ellington Trails Committee and Vernon Greenways Volunteers will host a Connecticut Trails Day hike along the Hockanum River on Saturday, June 6, beginning at 9 a.m.

Participants will have the opportunity to explore scenic sections of the Hockanum River Linear Park Trail as it winds through Ellington and Vernon.

Organizers said hikers can expect to see wildlife, including birds and waterfowl, along with inland marshland, river views and evidence of beaver activity. The hike includes crossing the David Smith suspension bridge spanning the Hockanum River.

Hikes will begin at Pinney Fields, 63 Pinney St. in Ellington. Parking will be available in the Pinney Street lot.

A well-deserved honor and a visit with the governor

E L L I N G TO N — Congratulations to Jim Gage, our newest Wall of Honor inductee, recognized for his outstanding work protecting farmland, Laurie Burstein open space, and state forest land. He was unanimously selected at the May 11 Board of Selectmen meeting, and the ceremony will take place on Saturday, Sept. 12.

Our town would look very different had it not been for Jim’s tireless efforts to protect and preserve our farmland, open space and natural resources.

We are forever grateful for his dedication and leadership.

I am proud to have served with him on the Conservation Commission and to have had him as an example of true stewardship and commitment to our community.

I recently attended a Connecticut Regional Council of Government Strategic Vision Planning meeting

Topics included federal infrastructure funding, economic vitality, regional housing strategies, road safety, shared services and shortage of firefighters. The session was followed by a Policy Board meeting.

Back at Town Hall, I had the pleasure of hosting Myra Ruparel, a student at Center School who serves on the

Connecticut Kid Governor’s Cabinet, as she shadowed me as first selectman for the day.

Myra met with several departments and learned about the daily operations of Town Hall. She was incredibly engaging and thoughtful with her questions, and it was clear she has a bright future ahead of her.

I attended the Ellington High School mock car crash with our Emergency Medical Service Director Craig Webb.

The students witnessed a simulation demonstrating the consequences of unsafe choices of impaired driving.

Ellington High School, Ellington Police and Resident State Troopers, Ellington Volunteer Ambulance Corps, and Ellington Volunteer Fire Department all participated in the coordinated effort, with Life Star landing on site.

It was incredibly impactful, and we hope experiences like this help save lives.

Thank you to everyone whose hard work made this possible.

A small group of us met with Gov. Ned Lamont at Radial Coffee House in

Vernon to share our community needs. We spoke about continuing support for farmland preservation and concerns on solar arrays placed on prime agriculture land.

We discussed supporting our dairy farmers and the housing crisis.

The governor recently added additional funding for farmland preservation and dairy farmers. We are grateful to our state representative Jaime Foster for her legislative work to make this a reality.

Earth Day was a tremendous success, with over 1,000 attendees enjoying beautiful weather and a fantastic community event. Thank you to all of our business sponsors and members of our community for all your efforts in making this a great event.

Ellington schools select new superintendent

ELLINGTON — The Ellington Board of Education has appointed Dr. Sue Nash as the new superintendent of Ellington Public Schools, district officials announced.

Nash currently has been serving as the superintendent of Killingly Public Schools and she brings more than 25 years of experience in public education, higher education and district leadership into her new role leading the Ellington district.

Her career has included roles as assistant superintendent and principal in several Connecticut school districts, including prior service as a principal in Ellington Public Schools.

District officials said Nash is recognized for her work in strategic planning, instructional leadership, budget management and improving student outcomes.

During her leadership tenure, Nash has overseen initiatives that focused on equitable grading practices, expanded mental health services, literacy development and the creation of innovative academic and career path-

ly served as a principal.

Returning now feels less like starting a new chapter and more like picking up a story that has always remained close to my heart.”

The superintendent search was facilitated by Trumbull-based Cooperative Educational Services (C.E.S.), which

guided the district’s search committee through the selection process.

Consultants developed a leadership profile based on stakeholder feedback and assisted with candidate interviews and evaluations.

C.E.S. is one of Connecticut’s six Regional Educational Service Centers and provides services and support to public school districts throughout the state.

Ellington Students earn right to represent state in national history event ELLINGTON — Two Ellington middle school students are headed to the national stage after earning top honors at the 2026 Connecticut History Day competition, held May 2 at Central Connecticut State University.

Amelia Winn and Cameron Smith, students at Center School in Ellington, captured first place in the Junior Group Exhibit category for their project, “A Teaching Revolution: The Creation of ABA Therapy,” earning an invitation to represent Connecticut at the National History Day Contest at the University of Maryland beginning June 14.

The statewide competition, organized by the Connecticut Democracy Center, brought together 435 middle and high school students from 59 schools across Connecticut. Students presented 268 original research projects tied to this year’s theme, “Revolution, Reaction, Reform in History.”

Students participating in Connecticut History Day conduct months of historical research and present projects in categories including exhibits, documentaries, websites, papers and performances. Topics range from local Connecticut history to major international events and movements.

“This requires students to focus, study, col-

laborate and communicate,” Rebecca Taber, director of secondary education programs for the Connecticut Democracy Center, said in a statement. “What I love most about Connecticut History Day is watching students discover and develop a passion for research while utilizing critical thinking skills to put what they learn into historical context.”

Students qualified for the state contest after advancing through one of five regional competitions held earlier this spring. First- and second-place finishers in each category advance to the national contest, while third-place finishers serve as alternates.

In addition to the Ellington winners, several students from North Central Connecticut schools earned special statewide honors: • Vernon students Audra Williams, Bethany Christians, Molly Cook and Samerah Beason of Vernon Center Middle School received the Outstanding Entry in World History–Junior Division award for “The Diggers.”

• Enfield students Aubrie Howell and Autumn Clark of Enfield High School earned the Outstanding Entry in Maritime History Senior Division Prize for “The Turtle: David Bushnell’s Revolutionary Invention and how it Reformed Marine Warfare.”

Thirty students sat in on criminal court cases as well as domestic abuse court cases. The following week, thirty more students experienced the same incredible opportunity. Thank you to Jose Martinez for coordinating this incredible opportunity for the students to see our justice system up close.

I was honored to serve as a guest speaker at the Rockville Rotary Club, where I shared many of the exciting projects and events happening in Ellington. Rotarians are volunteers who work to address many hunger, health and humanity issues and the primary focus is to help those less fortunate.

Our Senior Center wished farewell to Chef Mike as he enters the retirement chapter of his life. I will miss that meatloaf!

meals and time you and your wife gave to the Senior Center.

As you drive through the center of Ellington, you’ll see our tribute to our Ellington veterans past and present, proudly displayed on banners throughout the heart of town. We are forever grateful for their sacrifice and service.

Our Ellington Police and Resident State Troopers are planning an Active Threat event in the next few months to go over emergency response in a school.

Students get inside look at court proceedings ELLINGTON — Students from Ellington High School participated in a unique educational experience May 8, becoming among the first schools in Connecticut selected to observe live criminal justice proceedings at Hartford Superior Court.

The students were accompanied by First Selectwoman Laurie Burstein.

The trip gave students an inside look at Connecticut’s judicial system and the professionals who serve within it each day.

During the visit, students met with representatives from several agencies and offices involved in the administration of justice, including Hartford Superior Court judges, the Hartford State’s Attorney’s Office, Hartford Public Defender’s Office, Bail Commissioners Office, Hartford Probation Office and Victim’s Advocate Office.

Students also observed live court proceedings involving domestic violence, driving under the influence, assault and sentencing matters.

The trip was made possible through the collaboration of Ellington police officers, resident state troopers, Ellington Board of Education, Ellington High School staff and the Hartford State’s Attorney’s Office.

School officials said experiences like the Hartford Superior Court visit help students gain valuable real-world knowledge beyond the classroom while encouraging civic engagement and a deeper understanding of the justice system.

Ellington Chess Mates gives enthusiasts a local opportunity to check in ELLINGTON — What began as a small gathering of chess enthusiasts at the Ellington Senior Center has grown into a 15-year tradition of strategy, friendship and lifelong learning.

The Ellington Chess Mates, founded June 6, 2011, are celebrating a decade and a half of weekly games, instruction and camaraderie among local chess players of all skill levels.

The club was founded by Alex Cardoni, the group’s volunteer program leader, whose passion for chess dates back to his childhood. “I had been playing chess since age 13, when my eighth-grade teacher held a class after school,” Cardoni said. “I became ‘addicted’ to the game.”

Cardoni later played on the chess team at Bishop Timon High School in Buffalo, New York, where the team won the city championship in 1960. He continued playing during graduate school at Ohio State University and after relocating to Connecticut in 1972.

In 2011, Cardoni proposed a chess club

for seniors to then-Ellington Senior Center Director Erin Graziani. “She agreed that it would be a great way for seniors to exercise their brains,” Cardoni said.

The club began with six charter members meeting at the senior center’s former Church Street location. After the center relocated to Maple Street in 2014, membership steadily increased.

Current members include Cardoni, Mike Bailey, Dave Hazleton, Chris Maher, Will Maynard, Rick McCracken, Keith Miller, Anesti Nova and Winnie Zimberlin. The group meets regularly for friendly games played without chess clocks, while members share advice on opening moves, middle-game strategy and endgame tactics — along with plenty of conversation and humor.

“Our members are very willing to help each other improve their game, especially new members just beginning and those coming back after a hiatus,” Cardoni said. “Chess is a game that transcends nationalities, cultures, age and

gender. It is a universal language that can speak to all.”

Organizers estimate that between 40 and 50 people have participated in the club over the past 15 years.

Like many organizations, Chess Mates adapted during the COVID-19 pandemic by playing online games from home to keep members connected until they could safely return to in-person meetings.

Over the years, the group has also built connections with other area chess clubs. In 2014, the Ellington club competed in a friendly match against the Park

Place Chess Club in Rockville. More recently, members have visited senior chess clubs in Vernon and Glastonbury.

Cardoni said one of the biggest challenges over the years has been making people aware the club exists and encouraging new players. “Playing the game of chess can not only be enjoyable, but also can exercise the brain to help us stay cognitively well,” he said. “And it allows you to meet new friends.”

The Ellington Chess Mates remain open to players of all abilities, from beginners to experienced competitors.

Taking a look back at the last session

HARTFORD — The 2024 legislative session ended on May Jaime Foster 8, and it’s time to look at some of the General Assembly's accomplishments.

As a registered dietitian with a doctorate in nutritional sciences and a mother of two little ones, I’m committed to the health and well-being of our community and our state's families and children. I’m so proud that the House of Representatives voted unanimously to pass HB 5003, the child and family nutrition bill. This was a priority for the House Democrats, and I was honored to have been the one to champion it through the legislative process. This legislation ensures that mothers and children eligible for federal benefits, such as WIC, are enrolled in these programs easily and confidently. This bill aims to reduce barriers to participation in WIC. HB 5003 promotes outreach and information to access federal programs like WIC that Connecticut underutilizes and supports state farmers by encourag-

ing participation in these programs at farmers markets.

Healthy children are less likely to develop nutrition-related chronic diseases, they are at a lower risk of cavities/tooth decay, they have improved mental health, and they have improved participation in other social service programs. Increasing WIC participation decreases infant mortality, anemia, and failure to thrive, and improves nutritional status. In general, children are better off when their families participate in WIC. Connecticut has one of the highest costs of childcare in the country. Passing HB 5002 aims to make childcare and early education more affordable and accessible.

HB 5002 creates the “Early Childhood Care and Education Fund,” to be used for childcare and early childhood education programs; establishes an advisory commission that will report on the health of the fund and annually update recommendations on how to best use its resources; invests in teachers and

Random Raven ‘Sip’ Happens: Nantucket serves up Summer in a glass

By Gary Carra Welcome back to Random Raven, the column that aspires to be your complete entertainment itinerary as summer begins its annual takeover of our schedules and disposable income. As May prepared to hand the baton to June, your feathered friend took flight to the cobblestoned shores of Nantucket for the 28th Annual Nantucket Wine & Food Festival, where the forecast briefly flirted with drama but the festival itself never stopped serving splendor by the glass.

Yes, there were high winds. Yes, Saturday afternoon ferry disruptions attempted to audition for a starring role.

But this was not a washout. It was a story of a rock star lineup refusing to miss its cue, guests embracing the grandeur, and a weekend where the wine remained unparalleled, the food stayed fabulous, and the island's celebratory spirit proved stronger than any gust with a superiority complex.

Mother Nature made her noisy cameo with wind and rain that disrupt-

ed ferry service and forced Grand Tasting Session 2 at Bartlett's Oceanview Farm to end early. Yet the defining mood was not doom, gloom, or umbrella fatigue. Those already on the island remained in full festival form, moving from pour to pour and plate to plate with the sort of breezy determination Nantucket seems to bottle naturally. The weather may have blown in mid-scene, but it never stole the show.

The Raven spent much of the weekend reveling in the quintessential “Glambake,” a New England clambake dressed for the spotlight and fully aware of its own star power. Alongside the Grand Tastings and special events, it became a masterclass in culinary stamina and seaside style. From the SHUCKED Oyster Bash to the Dames Déjeuner Lobster Luncheon, the festival delivered a polished parade of talent, taste, and very little patience for meteorological melodrama.

If the weather delivered a burst of bluster, the food answered with an

encore. The sushi was sleek, bright, and sea-kissed. The smashburgers lived up to the verb, crisp-edged, perfectly seared, and gloriously unfussy. And then there was the clam chowder, creamy, comforting, and entirely worthy of its own weather report. If the gusts wanted attention, the chowder politely reclaimed the room.

The wine selection was equally spectacular. Argiano delivered Tuscan elegance and depth. Opus One once again justified every whispered superlative.

Champagne Billecart-Salmon reminded everyone that when transportation becomes temperamental, bubbles remain diplomacy in a glass.

As the Raven flies back to North Central Connecticut, he’s left with two things: a slightly wind-tossed Madras cjacket and a very satisfied palate.

Nantucket once again proved that while you cannot choreograph the weather, you can absolutely raise a glass through it. In 2026, the gales made their entrance, but the grapes, the glamour, and the grandeur got the final bow.

If the current timeline holds, construction could begin later this year and take roughly two and a half years, placing completion around 2028.

“The proposed Enfield Train Station is a key infrastructure investment that will enhance regional mobility and economic development in Northern Connecticut,” said Eva Zymaris, spokesperson for the Connecticut Department of Transportation. “The station is designed to accommodate future service expansions and multimodal connections, including integra-

tion with local bus routes and pedestrian access.”

The project’s cost has also grown significantly as plans have advanced.

The $45 million figure frequently cited for the project reflected a preliminary design estimate presented during an October 2023 public information meeting, according to CTDOT. Updated construction estimates are now approximately $90 million and include track, platform and parking lot improvements, as well as additional costs tied to retaining walls and work associated with the Main Street Bridge.

State officials also cited escalating construction costs as a factor in the increase. Funding is expected to come primarily from state bonding, supplemented by federal transportation dollars.

dles, including a federal environmental assessment completed in 2024, and follows years of planning, public meetings and design refinement led by CTDOT in coordination with Amtrak and federal agencies.

Plans call for a modern facility featuring a 350-foot high-level platform, pedestrian access improvements, parking and connections to local bus service, positioning the site as a multimodal transportation hub.

The design also includes a utility building intended to reflect the historic character of the Thompsonville section of town.

In addition to the station itself, the project includes surrounding infrastructure improvements, including upgrades to nearby bridges and roadway access to support traffic flow and transit use.

Data compiled as part of the project underscore the potential impact. About 91% of Enfield residents commute by car, while only a small share use public transit. Officials say the station could

Regional State Senate advances dairy support bill amid steep farm declines HARTFORD — Connecticut lawmakers have unanimously approved legislation aimed at stabilizing the state’s shrinking dairy industry, a sector that has seen dramatic losses over several decades, with particularly strong ties to north-central Connecticut.

The measure, Senate Bill 148 passed the state Senate and House of Representatives. It proposes financial incentives and policy changes designed to help dairy farms remain viable amid rising costs and competitive pressures from larger agricultural regions.

The bill comes at a critical moment.

According to industry data, Connecticut has lost roughly 63% of its dairy farms over the past 20 years. From nearly 1,000 operations at its mid-20th century peak, fewer than 80 dairy farms remain today. The industry is projected to lose about $20 million collectively this year.

Much of that strain stems from federal milk pricing systems tied to Midwest production, where lower costs for land, labor and feed create pricing disadvantages for smaller, Northeastern farms.

Regional Vernon student’s poster raises alarms on need for fire safety VERNON — Fourth-grader Jamie Fernandez may be new to Maple Street School, but she has already made a lasting impression — not just in the classroom, but across the entire state.

Fernandez, who arrived at the Vernon school this past fall, recently won first place in Connecticut’s statewide fire prevention poster contest, earning top honors among entries from students across the state. “I love drawing, so I decided to try,” Jamie said.

Her winning poster, which took about two weeks to complete, features a firefighter extinguishing a blaze alongside the message: “Fire Prevention, Everyone/Everyday.” She said she practiced in her sketchbook, experimented with color blending, and created multiple drafts before submitting her final piece.

The artwork first earned top honors in Tolland County before advancing to the state level, where it was evaluated by a panel of art teachers.

Maple Street School Principal Josh Egan said Jamie’s talent and character stand out equally.

“Jamie is an amazing kid,” Egan said.

“She is a great friend and an outstanding student. Everybody wants a Jamie in their class.”

Jamie’s family recently moved to Vernon from the Philippines, making this her first school year in the United States. Since arriving, she has quickly adjusted — making friends, joining student council, participating in the Book Buddies mentoring program and even serving on the school’s safety patrol.

In a gesture that further impressed school leaders, Jamie voluntarily gave up her safety patrol position so another classmate could have the opportunity.

“She’s the kind of student who lifts others up,” Egan said.

“Of all the entries from kids all over Connecticut, Jamie’s was judged to be the best,” Wasilewski said. “What an accomplishment.”

Jamie said she intentionally drew the firefighter in her poster as a girl to send a message.

“I wanted to show that girls can do anything,” she said.

Her winning artwork will be featured in a statewide calendar, while the original poster will be displayed prominently at Maple Street School.

“We have a perfect spot for it in the main hallway,” Egan said. “Everyone will be able to see it for years to come.”

In addition to recognition, Jamie’s win also brought a cash prize for her, her school and the Vernon Fire Marshal’s Office.

Somers Sweet sound: Summer Concert Series returns to town gazebo on June 18 SOMERS — The Somers Cultural Commission’s 2026 Summer Concert Series, featuring nine weeks of live music at the town gazebo on Battle Street, takes place Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. beginning June 18 and running through Aug. 13. All performances are scheduled to take place at the gazebo, located at 19 Battle St., with indoor locations in the event of rain or excessive heat.

The series opens June 18 with the Ethel Lee Ensemble, performing jazz, blues, standards and Motown. Dee Reilly is June 25 with classic country songs; the Windham Concert Band on July 2 with a patriotic and Broadway-themed performance; and Six Pack of Blues on July 9 with jump, blues and swing classics. Boo Boo’s Bakery: Passion project blossoms SOMERS — What began as a small, home-based baking venture in Somers has grown into a widely followed online brand, as Megan Murphy, founder of Boo Boo’s Bakery, has turned a passion for simple, plant-based treats into a full-time business reaching audiences far beyond her hometown.

Murphy, who was born and raised in Somers, first sold her baked goods locally as a cottage food business. When the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted in-person sales, she pivoted, sharing her recipes online so others could recreate them at home.

“A few recipes went viral, and well, here we are,” Murphy said. “What started as a little passion project has blossomed into a full-time online business that reaches a wide audience. Grateful is an understatement.”

Her approach centers on recipes that are plant-focused, vegan, primarily gluten-free and naturally sweetened with ingredients such as dates and maple syrup. Murphy said her goal is to make plant-based eating accessible and enjoyable. “My goal is to help others live healthier and happier lives

It’s not that ruff: License your dogs in June SOMERS — June is Dog Licensing Month in Connecticut, and the Town of Somers is reminding residents that all dogs age 6 months and older must be licensed and wearing a current tag by June 30 under state law.

The Somers Town Clerk’s Office has been emailing renewal notices to help residents renew licenses. Officials said licensing fulfills a legal requirement and helps reunite lost pets with owners. More dogs go missing on July 4 than any other day because of fireworks and loud noises, according to town officials, and licensed dogs wearing tags have a better chance of being returned home quickly. Dogs must be licensed to be boarded at kennels.

Regional Somers students win top honors at state ‘Invention Convention’ SOMERS — Seven fourth-grade students from Somers Elementary School advanced to the Connecticut Invention Convention State Finals, with three earning top specialty awards during a May 30 ceremony at the Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts at the University of Connecticut.

Bill to allow town to use state land for public safety needs passes House, Senate HARTFORD — Legislation allowing the Town of Somers to acquire and use stateowned land for public safety purposes has passed unanimously in both chambers of the Connecticut General Assembly and is awaiting action from Gov. Ned Lamont.

Raised Bill No. 5577, approved unanimously by the House of Representatives on April 30 and later by the Senate on May 5, amends a previous state land conveyance involving approximately three acres in Somers. The measure would permit the property to be transferred to the town at administrative cost rather than fair market value and requires the land be used exclusively for public safety purposes.

Town officials have said the parcel could potentially support emergency services operations, storage for public safety equipment or other first responder-related needs, though specific plans for the property have not yet been finalized.

The legislation was approved before the General Assembly adjourned its regular 2026 session earlier this month. If signed by Lamont, the measure would remove financial barriers for the town while ensuring the property remains dedicated to community use long term through a deed restriction tied to public safety.

John A. Kissel, whose district includes Somers, said the bill is intended to support local emergency personnel and preserve the land for community benefit.

“By making this land more accessible to Somers and dedicating it to public safety, we are helping local first responders better serve and protect the community,” Kissel said in a statement following legislative approval.

State conveyance bills are commonly used to transfer surplus or underutilized state property to municipalities or nonprofit organizations for specific public purposes. In this case, lawmakers added the public safety restriction to ensure the land remains dedicated to emergency and municipal needs in the future.

As of this press time, the bill had not yet received final signature action from Lamont or been assigned a public act number.

The project was integrated into the fourth-grade CKLA literacy unit, "Eureka! Student Inventor," which teaches students about the invention process while strengthening research, writing and communication skills.

Focus continued to be on creating realistic budget STAFFORD — This month’s focus has been on developing a realistic budget for the town for fiscal year 2026-27.

At the request of Bill Morrison the Board of Finance following the failed budget referendum, the Board of Selectmen was asked to reduce the original request by $227,215 and met on May 6, making adjustments to meet this reduction.

The town’s total expenditures are $48,271,028, which include funding for the Board of Education ($31,710,968), the Board of Selectmen ($12,905,289), debt service ($3,042,361), and the Stafford Public Library ($612,410).

After accounting for $15,018,647 in all other revenues, the amount to be raised from taxes is $33,252,381. The proposed mill rate is 25.66. Please visit staffordct.org/government/selectmen/bu dget.php to view/download the complete budget overview.

The second budget referendum was

scheduled for Tuesday, June 2, with polls open from 6 a.m.-8 p.m. at the Stafford Library (10 Levinthal Run).

Work continues and meetings have been held to finalize the animal control RPIP Grant that will include shared services with Willington and Tolland.

This has been approved and awarded to CRCOG for the three towns to enter a shared ACO model, helping defray the costs of the towns by 75% the first year, 50% the second year and 25% in the third year. Once the grant has been exhausted, the towns can elect to continue with the shared services, modify or end the agreement.

The Witt School abatement cleanup (20 Hyde Park Road) is expected to commence in July and continue through mid-September, funded by a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Cleanup Grant.

continues pursuing grant funding for a larger reconstruction project.

In addition, DPW staff continue daily operations including street sweeping, drainage work, roadside maintenance and general upkeep of infrastructure.

These projects are part of the town’s effort to maintain and improve roads and public facilities.

The state finalized the midterm governor’s budget with an increase to the Town of Stafford with supplemental Education Aid and supplemental Pequot-Mohegan funding.

This funding netted the town $543,570 in additional funding which increased the revenue as an offset to what the taxpayers are taxed.

Special thanks to the legislators who worked hard on this important and badly needed funding. Selectmen will continue to work with our legislators an attempt to continue to seek additional revenue sources from the state on special projects and initiatives that are important and bringing improvements to our town.

Of particular note, I will continue to work hard to diminish the number of unfunded mandates sent to the towns in Connecticut— specifically to the Town of Stafford.

Stafford’s Economic Development Commission met in May and provided an update centered on the future of Farm Day and its volunteer-driven model, which led into a broader discussion on Stafford’s long-term economic development, workforce needs, tourism, and community engagement.

Federal funding through congressionally directed spending and the USDA Community Facilities Program has been released for the Town Hall ADA improvements. The $500,000 grant will support installation of an accessible ramp on the south side of the building, new entryways with ADA-compliant doors to improve accessibility, and engineering and architectural services. With funding now in place, the town will begin the formal solicitation process for these project activities.

The Department of Public Works is completing milling and paving on Hampden Road as part of the town’s ongoing roadway improvement program. Upcoming paving is also scheduled for Edgewood Street and Clinton Street, which will include milling, paving and installation of a new sidewalk along Edgewood Street to improve pedestrian safety.

Following the completion of Hampden Road, DPW crews and contractors will complete an approximately 1,000-foot patch overlay on Gulf Road to temporarily improve one of the roadway’s worst sections while the town

Conversation expanded into sponsorships, event organization and creating more sustainable structures for community events that also generate economic activity.

Commission members and attendees also discussed the importance of coordinated sponsorship strategies, available state funding for workforce and manufacturing programs, and the need for stronger partnerships between businesses and the community.

Several participants encouraged the commission to gather direct feedback from local businesses through surveys and measurable data to better understand community needs and demonstrate the economic impact of local events.

Community wellness and tourism also emerged as themes.

Proposals included a town-wide

health and wellness initiative tied to Stafford’s historic identity, along with expanded promotion of Stafford’s architecture, walking tours and upcoming America 250 programming.

Meeting participants emphasized the need to move from ideas to action through stronger business engagement, regional collaboration, and better coordination between existing community initiatives.

The next Stafford EDC meeting is scheduled for June 16 at 6 p.m. at the Community Center.

Stafford Johnson Memorial earns ‘A’ grade from watchdog safety group STAFFORD – Johnson Memorial Hospital (JMH) has earned an A hospital safety grade from The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit watchdog focused on patient safety.

Leapfrog assigns an A, B, C, D or F grade to general hospitals across the country using evidence-based measures of patient safety focused exclusively on errors, accidents, injuries and infections.

Music, vintage cars highlight Hilltop events

SUFFIELD — Live music celebrating the golden era of singer-songwriters and a showcase of classic automobiles will headline a pair of June events at Hilltop Farm, offering visitors a blend of history, entertainment and community engagement at the historic property.

On Friday, June 19, Hilltop Farm will host an evening concert featuring the Satinwood Trio with Rainy Day People. The performance will highlight “legendary songs” and timeless folk-rock, bringing together two acts known for interpreting the work of iconic artists. Satinwood — featuring Paul and Melanie Motter with cellist Eric Roth — is recognized for its “Songs in the Firelight” series. Opening the evening, Rainy Day People — featuring Paul Motter and Jeff Tisdel — will pay tribute to singer-songwriters Jim Croce and Gordon Lightfoot.

SUFFIELD — The sixth annual Suffield Summer Fair will return June 25–27 at Suffield Middle School, bringing a weekend of carnival rides, live music, food vendors and craft exhibitors to the community.

The three-day event will be held at 350 Mountain Road. Festivities begin Thursday, June 25, and continue Friday, June 26, from 5 to 9 p.m. each evening.

The fair expands to a full-day schedule on Saturday, June 27, from noon to 10 p.m.

Organizers say attendees can expect a mix of attractions, including carnival rides, a variety of food options, craft vendors and live entertainment. A full music lineup is expected to be announced in advance of the event.

The weekend culminates Saturday with a fireworks display scheduled for 9 p.m., billed by organizers as one of the premier shows in New England.
