The sound of “Pomp and Circumstance” coming from the athletic fields of North Central Connecticut high schools will have added meaning this year. COVID-19 limited most 2020 graduations to drive-thru ceremonies and sparse audiences. Looking back on the 2020-21 school year, Rockville High School Principal Jason D. Magao said, “Rockville High School has persevered through one of the most challenging of years.” He said he is proud of the Class of 2021 and what it took for them to realize their final accomplishment as Vernon Public School students. “As out students graduate on June 10, 2021, they are better prepared to take on any challenge life might have in store for them.” The following are details of the ceremonies that will mark area high school graduations that will be held in June.

First Selectwoman’s Corner
Things begin to ‘get back to normal’ ELLINGTON — I want to start off by sharing that taxes will be going down 1 mill for the upcoming fiscal year, thanks to the Lori Spielman hard work of many. Our town buildings and offices are all open to serve our residents, and Sandy Beach at Crystal Lake opened for the season over Memorial Day weekend. Our Ad Hoc Patriotic Committee also held parades by Crystal Lake and through Ellington Center, as well as their annual ceremony at Ellington High School, to honor those we’ve lost. Earthlight Technologies recently held a groundbreaking ceremony for a new, 100% green facility on Route 83. The Ellington Farmers Market has a lot going on. Its summer market series is in full swing at Arbor Park. I highly recommend checking the market’s Facebook page for upcoming specials and other news. For the first time, the Ellington Historical Society set up a “promenade” event at the Nellie McKnight Museum, where classic cars and trucks,
Food boxes are delivered in East Windsor.
antique carriages and tractors, and beautiful floral arrangements were set up for EHS prom-goers to take photos. Graduation at Ellington High School will take place on Friday, June 11, at 6 p.m. – this is an exciting time for our seniors who have worked so hard and overcome such adversity over the past year. The Ellington Senior Center has started up some programming, both indoor and outdoor. The center also has been working hard to bring back its transportation services soon. For those who travel along Route 140, a large state project, between Webster Road and Angel Trace, got underway June 1. One lane of traffic is closed through June 17, the last day of school, with alternating traffic. Beginning in the late afternoon June 17 through Sept. 1, the entire road will be closed. The detour route will be posted. Vaccination rates in town look good, and infections have decreased, so thank you to all who have helped in us being able to “get back to normal.” I worked with the Town of East Windsor to get 100 USDA food boxes for distribution; these were delivered to the Senior Center, and were greatly appreciated by the recipients. I recently attended the Eagle Scout ceremony for Alexander Kiessling, who dedicated himself to multiple improvements at Crystal Lake. I am so proud of the incredible young people we have in town. EHS senior Ayushman Choudhury was a recipient of a prestigious National Merit Scholarship. A great job by both of you, and thank you for everything you do for your community.

Benefit golf tourney Asnuntuck Community College’s Foundation and Aerospace Components Manufacturers will present a golf tournament fundraiser on Tuesday, June 15. This will be the program’s 13th annual tournament. It will be the inaugural year the fundraiser will be held at Tunxis Country Club in Farmington. Proceeds from the event will be designated to the Advanced Manufacturing Technology Center at Asnuntuck. The center, an educational model in the state, features leading edge technology and has educated more than 9,000 students since 1998. Additional sponsors committed to the tournament include Air Industries Group/Sterling Engineering, Aerospace Alloys, Inc., Aeroswiss, Advance Welding, Pilot Precision Products, Kaman Precision Products, Willington Nameplate, Accu-Rite Tool and Manufacturing Co. Inc., and Jarvis Surgical Inc. Golfers will pay $150 for 18 holes of golf. The entry fee also includes a cart, goody bags, and two drink tickets. The day will also include a barbecue lunch and fountain drink, along with dinner
and an ice cream sundae bar. Golfers will have a chance at door prizes, and awards will be presented to top golfers during the dinner portion of the evening. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m. with a tee off at 1 p.m. Golfers will play with a “Shamble” which is a modified scramble. This format has each golfer hit their tee shot. The group picks the best one and each golfer plays their own ball from there. You then take the best score on each hole. This allows everyone to feel like they contribute and does not put pressure on any one golfer. Visit https://birdease.com/AMTGolf to register and learn about sponsorship opportunities. For details, contact event voordinator Joshua Ware at josh@ctgolfeventplanner.com or (203) 228-2768. ACC earns top 50 rankings nationally ENFIELD — Two online guides have ranked Asnuntuck as being in the top 50 for Community Colleges nationally. “The Asnuntuck Community College has a small campus environment where students feel that they are part of the community,” Asnuntuck CEO Dr. Michelle Coach said. “We value the relationships we foster with our students, and we work to know our students and help them achieve their goals. We are proud to be ranked on these lists and to continue to focus on the student experience.” Value Colleges (www.valuecolleges.com), an independent online guide to the best values in undergraduate and graduate education, has announced a new ranking of the Top 50 Best Community Colleges for 2021 (https://www.valuecolleges.com/ranking/bestcommunity-colleges/). Asnuntuck Community College was ranked No. 32 and was the only Connecticut Community College to place in the top 50. Value Colleges features only fully accredited institutions that have proven their value for graduates on the job and on the job market. The rankings by Value Colleges are based on verified data from sources including IPEDS and Niche. Programs are ranked according to factors including cost and student satisfaction.
“These rankings reinforce what we at Asnuntuck pride ourselves on providing: a quality, affordable, and accessible education for the surrounding community,” said Dr. James Lombella, North-West Regional president, Connecticut Community Colleges. Best Community College by College Consensus, a college ratings website that aggregates publisher rankings and student reviews, has compiled a list of the best community colleges in the country for students who are searching for an appropriate college. Asnuntuck was one of two Connecticut community colleges to place on the list (https://www.collegeconsensus.com/rankings/best-community-colleges/). Asnuntuck was ranked No. 30 in the College Consensus rankings. College Consensus utilizes the combined results of
the most reputable college ranking publishers and thousands of real student reviews from around the web to determine the rankings. In its compilation of the top 50 community colleges in the country, College Consensus identified the metric used to create the rankings: cost, reputation, and student success rate. All the schools in the College Consensus listing offer the proper accreditation, ensuring quality and easy transferability for those who want to ultimately move into a four-year program at an accredited college or university. “These rankings reinforce what we at Asnuntuck pride ourselves on providing: a quality, affordable, and accessible education for the surrounding community,” said Dr. James Lombella, North-West Regional president, Connecticut Community Colleges. “Asnuntuck is proud to represent the State of Connecticut on these lists and looks forward to continuing to educate the state’s residents for years to come.” To learn more about Asnuntuck visit Asnuntuck.edu, scroll down, and register for one of the many information sessions available. Summer courses began June 2 and the fall semester, featuring more on-campus courses, is set to begin Aug. 26.

WORCESTER, Mass. — Noah Veilleux of Enfield was one of 38 students selected to present an original academic research project at Assumption University’s 27th Annual Undergraduate Symposium, held virtually April 19. The annual symposium showcases the academic research and scholarly achievements of Assumption students working in collaboration with dedicated faculty mentors. The symposium provides the campus community with the opportunity to gain a greater appreciation of and applaud the individual and collective accomplishments of the university’s faculty and students. Veilleux, of the Class of 2021, presented “A Decade of Distrust: Why American Citizens Lost their Faith in the Government.” The presentation examined the period between 1965-75
during which trust in the government fell from a high of 77% to a low of 34% among Americans. Veilleux explains that three primary events — the Vietnam War, Watergate, and the Pike and Church Committee hearings — influenced Americans’ perceptions on corruption in their government.

and social studies teacher Marc Dzicek will also address this year’s graduates. Musical accompaniment will be by Somers High School band and Honors Choir students. Olivia Suter, valedictorian A Somers High School, participation in athletics has been a strong and positive influence in Suter’s life, solidifying her values of hard work and motivation. “Being a three-sport athlete, I immediately had to learn how to manage my time so I could perform well in everything I pursued,” she said. the leading goal scorer on the varsity soccer team both my junior and senior year, being state champion in the 300 hurdles sophomore year, and being conference champion in both the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles senior year.” Suter also was on a coop indoor track team with Ellington High School. “I was grateful for that amazing opportunity, which not only allowed me to grow as an athlete, but introduced me to many new friends.” Suter said she will cherish memories of pep rallies, semi-formal dances and the prom, selling fudge at the Four Town Fair, and going to Boston with her AP U.S. History class. Suter will attend Sacred Heart University, where she will continue her track career. She will major in biology with a sub concentration in secondary education, and hopes to become a teacher in STEM. Giovanna Gioscia, salutatorian Gioscia is known throughout the regional musical community as an accomplished saxophonist. “Being a saxophonist caused me to develop many invaluable skills that have greatly contributed to my academic success
in high school,” she said. Gioscia studied under Joe D’Aleo of the U.S. Coast Guard Band, who had an influence on her mindset about music, academics, or any pursuit that she has attempted. “Seeing him never accept less than the best from himself caused me to adopt the same mindset for myself.” Gioscia’s favorite performance opportunities were as a member of the 2019 All-National Concert Band and performing a solo at the 2020 Navy Band International Saxophone Symposium. At school, Gioscia was a drum major for the school band, worked at the elementary school, and was part of the town’s Memorial Day planning committee. Gioscia enjoys outdoor activity and spending time with her pet rabbit, Thumper. She will attend Arizona State University, where she will double major in music education and saxophone performance. In the future, she aspires to win a position with one of our country’s premier military bands or to become a K-12 band director.

Summer Fest to offer renewed sense of freedom STAFFORD — A renewed sense of freedom will return to Stafford on July 3, with Summer Fest & Fireworks set to celebrate Independence Day with food trucks, live music, and dazzling pyrotechnics. A cornerstone town event, the Mary Mitta return of Summer Fest signifies a slow return to normalcy after a year of forced postponements due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A summer kick-off tradition, the fireworks display is made possible by sponsor Stafford Savings Bank, a longtime supporter who ensures the grand community tradition continues each year. “Stafford Savings Bank has sponsored Stafford’s fireworks for decades and we are happy to see them resume in 2021,” bank President Winfield Trice says. “There’s nothing more important than community, family and friends, and celebrating our nation’s birthday with the rockets’ red glare. We look forward to fun and enjoying a great show in Stafford this summer.” True to form, the event will kick off with soughtafter food trucks pulling in from around the state, featuring an assortment of menus to please all palates. Previously, the event has ordinarily featured inflatable obstacle courses and bounce houses, but this year these

Loveland Hill Band will take the stage at 6 p.m., playing a diverse repertoire of rock, pop, and dance tributes until the fireworks take flight at 9:30 p.m. While Loveland Hill Band entertains audiences across southern New England, the ensemble’s guitarist, Earl Middleton, has special ties to Stafford as the school resource officer. Middleton, who was sworn into the Stafford Police Department in November, plays an important role in maintaining a safe school environment while fostering positive relationships between students and officers. promises a fun evening of much-missed live music. “While this was certainly an occasion for unfettered fun, I truly believe meaningful community events are a catalyst to strengthen the social fabric of our town,” says First Selectman Mary Mitta. “We’ve gone through a lot this past year which makes this celebration all the more special. It’s a privilege to organize town functions and we’re fortunate to have businesses like Stafford Savings Bank and involved community members who care so graciously for the betterment of our town.” Admission is free and all activities will take place at the Stafford High School, located at 145 Orcuttville Road in Stafford. The rural venue provides sprawling fields lush with grass and unobstructed views that are virtually void of ambient light – it’s a choice spot to spread out a blanket and enjoy this year’s fireworks. Ample onsite parking and viewing areas will be designated throughout the complex.Summer Fest & Fireworks will adhere to all state and local COVID-19 safety guidelines. For details and updates, visit explorestaffordct.com/summerfest or follow fb.com/StaffordSummerFest. If weather forces cancellation of the show, it will be held Monday, July 5. With unique shops, abundant recreation opportunities, and proximity to numerous attractions, historic Stafford is a great place to spend the day and celebrate by night.

Principals reflect on a school year unlike any other By Laura B. Hayden In addition to Rockville High School Principal Jason D. Magao’s remarks about meeting the challenges of the 2020-21 school year (see Page 1), other area principals have also weighed in on how students, teachers, and staff persevered through the different ways of meeting students’ needs during the COVID-19 restrictions. Stafford High School Principal Marco Pelliccia focused on his students. “The Stafford High School Class of 2021 has been nothing short of amazing,” Pelliccia said. “Their thoughtfulness, flexibility, and resilience has been a beacon of hope for the school and our community. Instead of wallowing in despair during the pandemic because of cancelled traditions, this amazing group of young people flipped the script and created their own traditions. Their passion for academics and compassion for others has allowed our school to shine during a difficult time period in our lives.”
“My 33-plus years of experience did not prepare me for a situation that changed the educational landscape so profusely,” Somers High School Principal Gary Cotzin said. Somers High School Principal Gary Cotzin also praised his students. “I will not say the obvious about the past 15 months,” Cotzin said. “My 33plus years of experience did not prepare me for a situation that changed the educational landscape so profusely. “What I do want to expound on is how proud we are of the students, staff, and parents who met this challenge head on and showed all of us what a true Somers Spartan is all about. I am honored to be a part of this community.” Enfield High School Principal Erin Clark collected her thoughts about the earlier part of the school year. She has been on maternity leave since the

spring and will return to her position for the 2021-22 school year. “The pandemic tested the resiliency and fortitude of our school community, and our staff and students rose to the challenge,” Clark said. “When the decision was made over the summer to offer a hybrid model for
our community, we made substantial changes in a matter of weeks. We transitioned to one-way hallways, lunches in classrooms, a new semesterized schedule, new disinfecting practices, and numerous other protocols to help reduce the chance of transmission. “While school looked nothing like it had in the past, our students used the opportunity to help others,” Clark said. Two examples are the care packages the EHS student council distributed to support students’ mental health and a class project that donated over $2,000 to the local soup kitchen.

Foxwoods names new president, CEO MASHANTUCKET — The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation has announce the appointment of Jason Guyot as Foxwoods Resort Casino’s new president and chief executive officer. With nearly 20 years of resort management experience as a gaming and hospitality leader, Guyot assumed the role of interim CEO in April 2020 and was instrumental in effectively leading Foxwoods through one of its most challenging and difficult years. Guyot assumes the role at a pivotal time as the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation sought to redefine its post-pandemic resort experiences and propel Foxwoods toward its 30th anniversary milestone next year. “What Jason has done over the past 12 months has been remarkable, taking the helm of Foxwoods at the onset of the pandemic, building safety guidelines from the ground up to ensure guests feel safe, and championing a new kind of culture for our team mem-
bers,” said Rodney Butler, chairman of the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation. “This is a special milestone for Foxwoods as well as our tribal family. There is simply no one more qualified, passionate or worthy to advance our growth strategies and position Foxwoods for a brighter, successful future. Jason Guyot is the right leader with the right vision to drive Foxwoods through its next phase of evolution, and we are equally proud that Jason is our first Pequot CEO.” Guyot led Foxwoods’ COVID-19 response team, developing and implementing the resort’s extensive safety measures across its 9 million square footprint, effectively setting the industry standard for health and wellness hospitality protocols. He was instrumental in accelerating Foxwoods’ expansive evolution from a gaming-centric outlet to a destination resort over the years, leading strategic experience-based developments including HighFlyer Zipline at Foxwoods,
MONZA World-Class Indoor Karting, Foxwoods Guy Fieri's Kitchen + Bar, Sugar Factory and much more. These diverse offerings allowed Foxwoods to define what it means to be an integrated resort destination. “I am very honored to be appointed Foxwoods’ president/CEO —a role that means everything to me,” Guyot said. “I’ve been very fortunate to have been afforded the unique opportunity to begin and advance my career at Foxwoods, driven by my desire and passion to learn and grow, personally and professionally. As a tribal member, I’m equally grateful for the opportunity to contribute toward the future success of our tribal nation. I remain personally invested in and fiercely committed to the ongoing growth of our resort, as well as our team members and tribal members, and I look forward to continuing to offer our guests superior hospitality as well as the memorable experiences they’ve come to expect from Foxwoods Resort Casino.”
Jason Guyot has been named the new president and chief executive officer of Foxwoods Resort Casino.

Regional Windsor Locks names top academic students
Principals expound on flexibility, resilience
WINDSOR LOCKS — Om Sinojia named the Windsor Locks High School valedictorian of the Class of 2021. Sinojia came to the United States with his family when he was 11. He said he has always taken pride in his adaptability and strong work ethic to take on the experiences that come with learning to live in a new environment. Sinojia’s motivation and persistence to embrace his challenging courses have enabled him to achieve academic excellence. Over his four-year career his transcript can attest to the strenuousness of his honors and advanced placement level courses, completing an overall total of 12 Advanced Placement courses by the end of this school year. Sinojia is extremely passionate about science; a desire sparked early in his life due to two traumatic medical experiences he personally endured. Science teachers designed laboratory experiments that required students in school to stream experiments and work together with students at home. English teachers facilitated Socratic Seminar discussions that included both students at home and in class,” Clark said. She added, “Our support staff rose to the occasion ... administrative professionals helped with material distribution and making calls home to check on stu-

Ryan Kittredge is the salutatorian for the Class of 2021. Kittredge will graduate having taken seven advanced placement, collegelevel courses. To date, he has passed all of his AP exams with a 4 or higher, allowing him to enter college with several credits already awarded. “I have never seen the level of teamwork, flexibility, and innovation that we have seen in the last year,” said Erin Clark, Enfield High School principal. dents. School counselors, social workers, and the school resource officers helped our administrators conduct home visits to reengage students, conduct wellness checks, and assist with tablet issues. School nurses helped our administrative team with hours and hours of contact tracing each week. The custodial staff worked extra hours keeping our building spotless, and our dedicated team of nutritional services staff worked tirelessly to feed our families most in need. Clark ended by saying, “I have never seen the level of teamwork, flexibility, and innovation that we have seen in the last year.”
