Ellington First Selectwoman’s Corner

Congrats to the grads and much more in town ELLINGTON — I recently attended the Ellington High School graduation; it was a wonderful night to see the students honored for their 12 years of Lori Spielman hard work. There was also a senior parade the day before graduation, starting at the middle school and ending at EHS. I do a monthly television show through the Community Voice Channel; past recordings are on our website, and I’m always looking for new guests to join me.

Every Friday, from 5 to 8 p.m., classic car shows are held at Nellie McKnight Museum, 70 Main St. These events are free. Ellington Farmers Market is also in full swing Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon with excellent local vendors at Arbor Park.

If possible, I recommend finding an alternate route if you regularly travel Route 140 between the center of town and Crystal Lake, as the state is in the midst of a bridge replacement project.

I continue to work with the state to try to get more funds for crumbling foundations. To date, the town of Ellington has had 32 foundations replaced; if you need assistance, contact our Assessor’s Office and we’ll be happy to help.

Hall Memorial Library has great programming planned for the summer; you can check it out on its website. Our Senior Center is also back up and running; it kicked off the reopening with a wellattended ice cream social. Feel free to stop by to meet Sheila Grady, the new director.

We continue to work on improvements to the Veterans Memorial by the Town Green. A grant for these improvements was received by the town, and you may have noticed the new statue at that location. I also want to thank the Ellington Volunteer Fire Department for the installation of American flags on utility poles through the center of town. This display is a beautiful addition to our town.

I want to congratulate Madison Vale for received her Gold Award with Girl Scout Troop 10747; this is the highest achieve-

ment that can be received, and it was well earned. She redesigned and painted the playground at Windermere School, developing games and activities that could be played on the blacktop when other equipment was closed during the pandemic.

I am working on acquiring property in town to help increase availability of elderly and affordable housing.

Our Public Works Department still has

rain barrels and compost bins available for purchase. Beginning with fiscal year 2021-22, the trash collection and disposal fees are included in taxes, and there will be no separate fee for these services.

Second barrels are available through the contractor, All American Waste.

We are also in the midst of a roof replacement project for the ambulance building.

Random Raven ‘Summer Days’ bring regional rock faves to Somers, Carnival to Vernon, & a Mass auto exhibit

By Gary Carra Welcome back to Random Raven, the column that aspires for nothing less than providing a complete, entertainment itinerary on a month-to-month basis.

Jumping into July, the Raven definitely feels the noticeable void left by the 2021 cancellation of the annual Enfield Celebration. But fear not, Vernon’s 13th annual Summer Days Carnival will offer a local opportunity to grab some fair food, show off your skills and win a stuffed animal for a loved one or ride your favorite

amusement. This year’s installment will run July 21-24 at 95 Hartford Turnpike.

Parking and admission are free. All net proceeds from the sale of food and ride admission benefit underprivileged children within the community.

Loaves and Fishes director retires Enfield Loaves and Fishes Executive Director Priscilla Mae Brayson has retired after 33 years of service and dedication to the organization.

Brayson joined Enfield Loaves and Fishes as a volunteer and went on to become an employee. Over the years she worked closely with the Board of Directors in helping to realize the group’s mission of feeding a hot meal to anyone in the community who wants or needs one, while also successfully securing funding to support the organization’s goals.

Francie Berger, director of finance, will serve as interim executive director while the Board of Directors initiates a search for a permanent executive director. The board will be focused on finding a caring, committed person to sustain the current mission as well as to develop a strategic plan for the future of Enfield Loaves and Fishes.

Much has changed during the past 12 months, including a switch to carryout meals due to COVID and a move into a new building at 23 N. Main St, four blocks from the former location. We are excited to begin preparing to welcome

Food Shelf gets ‘Tech Boost’ Despite the important work nonprofits and community organizations do in the communities they serve, many are lacking the modern technology needed to perform their missions to the fullest.

To bridge this technology gap, Cox Communications has announced the 2021 recipients for its “Tech Boosts” program, which awards grants to nonprofit groups committed to investing in technology equipment for the betterment of its patrons and mission.

In Connecticut, the company presented the Enfield Food Shelf with a $10,000 Tech Boost grant.

The organization’s vision is to create a community where everyone has equal access to necessary resources and available nutrition resources. It recently moved to a new facility and created dedicated space for a resource area where providers and clients can meet to match available resources with those in need, including 211, housing, insurance, nutrition, healthcare, and jobs.

Somers Public Library The Somers Public Library is open Mondays to Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Operation hours will be increased in increments over time.

The library is still asking patrons to try to limit the length of their visit and there is a strict capacity per hour to maintain social distancing in the computer and teen areas of the building.

Regional Committee considers nominees for Ellington Wall of Honor

Juneteenth festivities Organizers of the Juneteenth celebration in Suffield take a pause during the event.

The event included performances from the Third Baptist Church Choir and a reading of the Emancipation Proclamation by Voices United.

ELLINGTON — The Wall of Honor, located in Arbor Park (Main Street), recognizes deserving citizens for exceptional contributions to the town of Ellington. The submission deadline for consideration as a nominee this year was July 1.

If you submitted an application in the previous three years, it is being included in the pool of current candidates.

The Board of Selectmen Town Policies Committee is reviewing the applications and may recommend a recipient to the Board of Selectmen at its July 12, meeting.

If a recipient is chosen, his/her name will be engraved on the Wall of Honor and unveiled at a public ceremony on Sept. 11 at 4 p.m., just prior to the Fire Department’s parade.

Those noted on the Wall of Honor are (induction year in parenthesis): Nellie E. McKnight, 1894-1981, educator, librarian, historian (2001).

Celebrates 59 Years serving the Youth of Stafford and Union Citizens’ Scholarship Foundation of Stafford Springs was founded in 1962 for the purpose of awarding scholarships to assist students from Stafford and Union seeking education beyond the secondary level. With this year’s reward of $60,000 to 16 young people, the foundation has awarded $2,058,530 to 1,670 students. Contributions are greatly appreciated and can be designated to one of the existing funds or to the CSF of Stafford Springs General Fund.
