With two educational sessions at 11:00am and 1:00pm, Beardsley Zoo Educators will bring science to life with their interactive aviary demonstrations. Alookatthefirst30daysofaddressinggoals EASTWINDSOR—Asofthefirst of the year, I have had the pleasure to serveasEastWindsor’sfirstselectman forforty-twodays. During the campaign, I put forth a workplan for what I expected my first year in office would looklike,intermsof the initiatives I wouldneedtounderJasonBowsza take. Aspartofbeingagoodcandidate,I thoughtitwasreasonabletoconveyto voters what I thought the job of first selectmanwouldentail. Nowthatmyfirst30daysarecomplete,Iwouldliketoshareanupdateas tohowwellI’veaddressedmygoalsso far. Myfirstprioritywithinthosefirst30 days was to begin to build a rapport with community groups and public organizations.
During December, I met with the ChamberofCommerce,participatedin community events like the Torchlight Paradeanddifferenttoydrives,visited with seniors on three different occasions at the Senior Center, and helped commemorate Wreaths Across America. Increasing transparency was another key goal I wanted to begin to address withinmyfirst30days. We took two simple but meaningful stepstobeginthatprocess. First, the Board of Selectmen meeting packet documentation is now fully available online at the town’s website. This allows the public to access the same documentation from their own phones or tablets at meetings to better understandpresentedagendaitems. Secondly,thetowninvitedapresenter from the Freedom of Information Commissiontospeakaboutthenuances oftheFreedomofInformationAct,and ofitsimportancetothepublic.Thisact

I also made a commitment to meet witheachtowndepartmenthead,direct reportandagencyleader. I felt this important because it gave me a chance to more fully understand the function of each department, what initiatives and achievable goals are on the horizon, and what challenges each
departmentmaybefacing. Whiletimeconsuming,Ithinkitwas timewellspentandIcameawayfrom thesemeetingsveryproudofthededicatedstaffthatthetownhasworkingon itsbehalf.Wearetrulyaluckycommunity. Beyond these initial commitments, I’ve been working on budget recommendations, reviewing and updating town policies and procedures, started working on a newly updated organizational chart for town government, and havehadmeetingswithseveralcompanies looking to either locate or expand theirexistingfootprintinEastWindsor. I’ve asked the Chamber of Commerce for recommendations for keylocalbusinessestoreachouttoand visit and am excited about doing that earlyinthenewyear. Iremainmoreconfidentthaneverthe EastWindsor’sbestdaysareahead,and I’mexcitedeverydaytoworkonbehalf ofthepeopleofourgreatcommunity.

The park located on MelroseRoadwasoneof15 parksacrossthestatetotake partintheevent. The East Windsor American Heritage River Commission hosted the event that marked the 10th annualNewYear’sDayhike at the park. As in the past, hikers donated canned goods for the local food pantry. Tedford died suddenly Nov. 13, 2018, and left a legacy so strong the towndecidedtorenameBrooksidePark on Route 140 as The Robert Tedford MemorialPark. Thedayfeatureda5KRoadRacein Tedford’snameandnumerousactivities

Family and friends along with town and state officials began the day with BoyScoutTroop96raisingtheflagthat flewatthenations’capitalinhonorof Tedfordduringthetimeofhiswakeand funerallastyear. The national anthem was sung by StephenVillanova. Immediately following the race awards, a dedication ceremony with several speakers from the community, including Tedford’s son Kristian and wifeJoanne,recalledthemanwhogave somuchtothetown. RECREATION PROGRAMS For more information on the following programs, contact the Enfield Recreation Division at (860) 253-6420 or visit on the web at www.enfieldct.gov/recreation. PLAYGROUP Playgroup is open to those up to age 5. Children will be able to explore, learn, and play with educational toys and games while moms, dads, and caregivers have the opportunity to socialize. Playgroup is ongoing, so pre-registration is not required. A participant waiver must be on file with the instructor. There is no playgroup when school is delayed or closed or there is a parking ban. The program runs Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays through May 15 from 9-11 a.m. at the Angelo Lamagna Activity Center gym. See website for no program dates. There is no cost for this program and it is open to residents and nonresidents. VOLLEYBALL Enfield Recreation holds an open gym program for high school students looking to play recreational volleyball. Pick-up games are arranged amongst the participants. ‘Farming for Your Future’ summit planned in February Enfield — The Northern Connecticut Agriculture Summit, “Farming for Your Future” will be held Saturday, Feb. 29, from 8:30 to 1:00 p.m. at Asnuntuck Community College, 170 Elm St. The agricultural summit is geared toward current and prospective farmers to raise awareness and provide educational seminars to those interested in farming. Enfield A sharp new venue opens: Odin’s Keep Axe House Social axe-throwing outlet sports a Nordic theme By Laura B. Hayden ENFIELD — Odin’s Keep Axe House is arguably the most unusual haunt to take up residence in the long-standing Enfield Plaza. The recently opened venue is nestled in the central corner of the strip mall at 630 Enfield St. Its name is derived from a revered god in Norse mythology (Odin) and the large impenetrable tower in the center of his castle (a keep). A night out at Odin’s Keep Axe House offers social ax-throwing pits for small groups and couples and private pits for groups of eight or more. Each booking comes complete
with a certified “axe-pert” in attendance, ensuring the safety and cheering on of participants. Throwers must be 10 or older. Under 18-year-old throwers need to be accompanied by a legal guardian. Popularized in Canada, there has been a significant increase in the number of axe-throwing locations in the U.S. in the last few years, most of which take on a frontier ambiance. But Odin’s Keep owner Merle McKenzie, who also owns Montana Nights Axe-Throwing in Newington, envisioned something different for his second ax-throwing enterprise in the state. “The Viking concept is an itch I needed to scratch,” McKenzie said. So he did. McKenzie surrounded the Enfield venue’s throwing pits with a virtual Valhalla – the large, majestic hall
located in the mythical home of the Norse gods, ruled over by Odin. Viking-shield tabletops built by Merle’s partner Gaetano Marino, surround the axe-pits and a room with a roaring fireplace, long tables, and Nordic-inspired chandeliers is available for private parties. Marino also built a mighty impressive bar in the shape of a Viking ship where beer, wine, nonalcoholic drinks, and snacks are served. And there are other fun activities at Odin’s Keep Axe House too – including an arcade that, according to McKenzie, has the world’s largest Pac Man game. You’ll want to find your way in to these escape rooms By Laura Hayden WINDSOR LOCKS — North Central News readers can start the New Year literally escaping everything — from the humdrum to the high stresses of their lives — at escape game room venues in Windsor Locks. Escape game rooms have become a popular pastime in the U.S. following their proliferation worldwide through the 2010s. These cooperative thinking adventures usually consist of a team of four to 10 players who discover clues, solve puzzles and accomplish tasks in one or more themed rooms in order to progress and accomplish a specific goal in a limited amount of time – usually around one hour. The goal is most often to escape from the site of the game. Escape in your Spare Time One of the many new attractions at the newly renovated Spare Time (the former Bradley Bowl), at 129
Ella Grasso Turnpike, is the escape room experience. Patrons can book either an alien or zombie-themed room online at https://sparetimewindsorlocks.resova.us/. According to the website, the rooms, which can accommodate eight players, remain available for booking until filled to capacity. Guests under the age of 13 must be an accompanied by an adult. An escape led to AdventurEscape Back in 2015, a first visit to an escape game room in Middletown changed Jim and Anna Rose’s lives. “We loved the challenge and couldn’t stop talking about the possibilities,” Anna says. Two years later they opened their family-owned business, AdventurEscape Premium Escape Rooms, across the street from Bradley International Airport at One Corporate Drive, Suite 102. To date AdventurEscape offers an array of “multi-themed rooms” that

incorporate logic puzzles and special effects as well as a puzzles paint bar. Through each escape room, “observation is key. ... You may notice the clock stopped at midnight, a picture hanging askew, or a shoe print left behind,” Jim said. The solution to getting out of each room (though no room is ever truly locked) is in the details. A room guide is also on hand to drop a hint or two, when needed. Local color Jim and Anna felt their rooms could be more fun than the barebones room they solved years ago, or a corporate model, by adding a touch of local history to the narrative of a chamber. Thus, Adventurescape’s Sherlock Homes Room is based on a story in Connecticut paranormal investigator Ed Warren’s book “Graveyard: True Hauntings from an Old New England Cemetery.”

Restructuring will allow services to operate more effectively
!
We’ve recently completed a complete review of our Senior Center, Human Services, and Recreation functions, with the objective of upgrading and reorganizing these important operations to make them more efficient, C.G. Bud Knorr responsive, productive, and pertinent in support of the current and future demographics in Somers. We recognized that there are many synergies and related qualities and characteristics between the Recreation Department and the Senior Center that complement one another and align within the community. These two departments have the same goals and objectives but serve separate portions of the community. Given this fact we are excited to combine both departments into a Center and Recreation Department, with Chris Boucher as the director. We believe that this restructuring will allow us to operate more effectively to meet the evolving needs of our community. We’re committed to offering quality, affordable health and wellness opportunities to all and believe that merging these departments prepares us for both
short-term and long-term success. We also analyzed the social service needs and trends within our community and came to the conclusion that Somers needs a qualified candidate with professional experience and expertise in building and leading a comprehensive social service program and recognized the need to hire a Social Services director to head up this new department. Having a separate department with adequate resources will allow us to address evolving needs in Somers and improve upon the existing social services programs that we currently have available as well as design/implement/execute new programs and services to better serve the needy citizens of Somers. This new department will be able to collaborate with professionals in the school system, fire and police, civic organizations, the opioid crisis, as well
as local and state agencies to diversify and expand our offerings. To this end and in support of this initiative, we’ve hired Allison Maynard to serve as our new Social Services director. Allison previously worked for the Town of Vernon as its director of Social Services. Allison has over 14 years of professional experience that ranges from nonprofit management, case management, outpatient therapy, and outreach and community engagement. Her extensive leadership career has been marked with shaping policies and procedures to enhance systems with the ultimate goal of improving the quality of life for people. We’re excited about this reorganization because it will mean better service/response for our citizens.

Somers Barry Cass, ‘the rock’ of Somers Congregational Church, dies Reverend Dr. Barry Ernest Cass, 67, of Ellington, passed away peacefully at home, Tuesday, Dec. 31, 2019. Born in Peterborough, New Hampshire, Barry lived in New Hampshire until 1989. While earning his undergraduate degree from the University of New Hampshire, Barry served as the interim minister in Deerfield, New Hampshire. He earned a masters in Divinity at Andover Newton Theological School, graduating in 1979. Barry was ordained at the United Church of Penacook on May 4, 1980, serving as pastor there for 13 years. He then moved to Somers and became the pastor at the Somers Congregational Church, eventually earning a doctorate in ministry at the Hartford Seminary in 1996. He recently retired in May of 2018 after 28-1/2 years serving the community, one of the longest tenures in the church’s history. Barry faced one of his greatest challenges and achievements following the day the church burned to the ground on New Year’s Day 2012. He united the congregation and the community in a

time of sadness and need, and together, was able to rebuild the Somers Congregational Church gathering support from all over the world. He was “the rock” the congregation needed throughout the process and the Somers community will never forget his unwavering faith and comforting presence. He had an extraordinary sense of humor and was able to make all feel welcome and beloved by God. Outside of his religious duties, Barry enjoyed working with Students Against Destructive Decisions and Somers Comes Together, was an avid photography buff, and enjoyed genealogy. Family was deeply important to Barry, he dedicated his retirement life to his grandchildren, never missed his Saturday night phone call with his mother, and was the life of family gatherings. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. Barry is survived by two sons, Tyler Cass and his wife Suzanne of Enfield, Noah Cass and his wife Stacey of Somers, his mother, Natalie (Weston) Cass of Hancock, New Hampshire, two

WINDSOR LOCKS — Round tables for two, counter-high seating, a couch, love seats and communal seating at long tables are among the accommodations at the new Luppoleto Brewing Co., the first establishment of its kind to open in town. The name of the new establishment comes from the Italian word for a hop farm or hopyard. The derivation pays homage to owner James Wright’s Italian and agricultural heritage. His planting background includes having cultivated 60 hop plants in a home garden nearly ten years ago. A few of those plants still thrive in James’ fathers’ garden in East Windsor. The hop garden set into motion a series of events that has led to James and his wife Jen owning the brewery today. Another significant step came when James won a Sierra Nevada Beer Camp contest based
on a video he created about why he should be selected to attend the camp’s extended immersion into the independent brewing world. According to Jen, it was through this experience that James became as passionate about the concept of hospitality in the beer service industry as he was about hop farming and the manufacturing of products. Thus, the Luppoleto Brewing Co. strives to “serve a variety of hops with an extra helping of hospitality,” Jen said. That variety currently includes a golden Belgian-style ale fermented with cherries, a smooth coffee-infused milk stout, a fruity IPA, and malty German-style Altbier, with more varieties fermenting as these deplete. And if any of that goes beyond your “beercabulary,” the Luppoleto Brewing Co. plans to hold a “beer education session” sometime in the near future. In addition, Jen talks about starting a community hopyard further down the road, where members could share hop rhizomes – the small roots that are cut from the main root of a mature female hop plant – and be able to use a variety of hops for home brewing.

Gorman also assisted in coordinating Honor Flights for World War II veterans to view the World War II memorial in Washington. He continues to seek and promote ways to honor veterans in the community. The Hall of Fame recognizes Connecticut veterans who have made significant contributions to their communities after leaving military service. “Even though they had already sacrificed so much through their military service, each one of these inductees continued to go above and beyond the call of duty to give back to their communities here at home,” Bysiewicz said. “Some dedicated their lives to helping their fellow veterans or men-
toring youth, while others volunteered to serve on state boards and commissions, or became medical volunteers. Main St., will present Great Decisions starting Tuesday, Jan. 21 at 3 p.m. Great Decisions is America's largest discussion program on world affairs designed by the American Foreign Policy Association. Individuals who register for the program will receive a Briefing Book, paid for by The Friends of Kent Memorial Library. The booklet is available in January. Participants will read about an issue in the Briefing Book before the discussion. Bet Your Bottom Dollar On Saturday, Feb. 8 at 2 p.m., Charles Zanor will present a program entitled “Bet Your Bottom Dollar: The Psychology of Separating You From Your Monday.” Zanor is a psychologist and Suffield resident. His presentation is based on behavioral economics, discussing things like brand loyalty, going to the casino, and shopping for sales. He recently wrote a piece on the subject for Scientific American. When we think of “economic theory,” we mostly think big: supply and demand, inflation and recession, national debt and taxes. But what does all that have to do with how we make financial decisions in our day-to-day lives? In some cases, not much. Often, how we spend or refrain from spending our money is more a matter of “behavioral economics.” How much are we willing to spend on concert tickets, for example? If we buy them, would we be later willing to sell them at a higher price? What happens if circumstances make it hard for us to actually go to the concert? Town announces new hires in key roles SUFFIELD — The Town of Suffield welcomes three new employees: John Spencer, chief of services for the Suffield Volunteer Ambulance Association; Alex Kaminski, chief operator of the Water Pollution Control Authority; and Francine Aloisa, interim director of Kent Memorial Library. “I am delighted these important leadership positions are filled by such strong candidates,” Suffield First Selectwoman Melissa M. Mack said. “It’s a great way to begin the new year.” Spencer most recently worked as operations supervisor at American Medical Response in West Hartford. A paramedic since 2006, the new chief previously served as regional emergency medJohn ical services coordinator for the Department of Public Health, where Spencer he assisted in the development of state 2016 Patient Care Guidelines. Spencer replaces much-respected Chief Art Groux, who retired to Vermont. Prior to becoming WPCA chief operator, Kaminski was assistant superintendent at the Farmington WPCA. His 12 years of experience includes class I, II and IV certifications. No stranger to Suffield, Aloisa previously acted as co-director of KML from 1989-95. Over 20 years as director of Somers Public Library followed her KML tenure. The town continues to seek the Alex permanent replacement for retiring Director Jackie Hemond, who Kaminski sustained KML during its difficult and lengthy renovation project. Something new is brewing in Suffield Broad Brook Brewing readies for opening later this month By Laura Hayden
They opened the East Windsor site in 2013 and decided to move to Suffield to grow the business twofold. Manse says the long ordeal has taught him patience, as he completes final touches in the taproom and fine tunes brewing on the premises. He suggests keeping an eye on the Broad Brook Brewing Facebook page for an announcement of the January opening date. In time, the brewery will offer pub-style food and entertainment.

SUFFIELD — The new year is ushering in the long-awaited opening of Broad Brook Brewing Co. at its new location at 915 South St. later this month, according to its co-founder Eric Manse. Under construction since 2017, the business (relocating from its original site in East Windsor) came to a standstill almost two years ago after Suffield Building Inspector Edward Flanders issued a stopwork order due to design issues with the foundation that deemed the structure unsafe. Three months later the order was revised to allow work to remedy the problem. In November 2018 the Suffield Observer reported on the excavating of a ditch 7 feet deep, 4 feet across the bottom, along most of the east and north sides of the building, tapering back up to grade level. With that fix, soil pressure against the tall foundation walls was relieved, removing the danger of collapse. Manse and co-founder Tom Rossing began brewing their own beer almost 10 years ago.
