Mohegan’s New ‘Earth’ Hotel Allows for more ‘Stay & Plays’

By Gary Carra Welcome to Random Raven, the column that aspires to be nothing less than your complete entertainment itinerary on a month-to-month basis.

For this installment, your friendly, neighborhood Raven finally had the opportunity to color his world - in ‘Earth' tones. That is, enjoy a play AND stay courtesy of Mohegan Sun’s newly opened Earth Hotel. Sure, he's been to many a concert at the famed Uncasville casino ... and stayed at the towering Sky Hotel a handful of times.

With the birth of Earth, however, Mohegan has never had such an inventory of rooms (and, as any supply-side economist would astutely point out, ability to keep room rates down) for its patrons.

And that's a situation the Raven was all too happy to capitalize on when he heard The Who was coming to Mohegan July 20.

They may not be kids anymore, but veteran rockers The Who were more than alright as they steamrolled through a blistering, 21-tune set at Mohegan July 20.

Truth be told, a second hotel had been planned at the casino since 2008, but back-burnered in the wake of the economic downturn.

With recent reports indicating that Mohegan had lost upwards of one million potential overnight customers due to lack of capacity in the last two years alone, however, the project was put back on track.

The finished product is a 400 room, 242,000 square foot facility that balances fashion and function as deftly as as its sis-

“Amazing Journey” - adorned with snippets from “Overture” and “It’s A Boy,” proved an amazing, sonic-backdrop for a poignant, video-pastiche of historical footage chronicling world events since The Who’s inception in 1964. JFK, MLK... Ronald Reagan to Ronald McDonald and beyond..

So the Raven knows what your thinking. The Who? Who’s left?

The voice, Roger Daltrey, and “the maestro,” Pete Townsend, for starters which certainly qualifies them to use the name. Speaking of names, Townsend’s brother Simon has been filling in quite capably on rhythm guitar these days. But who can assume that legendary drum throne? When you’re shooting for a (Keith) Moon, it appears you reach for the stars.. or at least, Ringo Starr’s son - and a monster percussionist - Zak Starkey.

East Windsor Casino at Showcase site looking like a better bet Mohegan Indian tribes.

“Over the years, our state has maintained a longstanding partnership and compact with the Mohegan and Mashantucket Pequot tribal nations, who employ thousands of Connecticut residents at their casinos,” Malloy said in a written release. “Make no mistake about it – the legislation I signed today is about jobs for the residents of Connecticut, and securing those jobs in our state.”

The new casino will be located at the former Showcase Cinemas site.

In February the Board of Selectmen voted unanimously to approve the casino development agreement.

EAST WINDSOR — Barring legal challenges and legislative hurdles, the town will be getting a casino.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy on June 27 signed legislation authorizing the operation of an entertainment and casino gaming facility in East Windsor.

On July 20 the governor and the state’s two Indian tribes who currently operate casinos signed a compact authorizing the new facility and amending the compact for operating casinos in the state. Those changes still face legislative and legal challenges.

The legislation signed in June specifies that the casino will be owned and operated by MMCT Venture LLC, a joint venture of the Mashantucket Pequot and

New book will ‘make you proud to be from East Windsor’

EAST WINDSOR — The East Windsor Historical Society will be hosting a book launch and author signing event from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 12, to celebrate the publication of its new history book, “Images of America: East Windsor.”

The book, co-written by Ceil Donahue and Jessica Bottomley, takes readers on a journey through the past with almost 200 historical photographs tracing the history of the five distinct villages that melded together to become the town of East Windsor and its colorful inhabitants.

“Since 1680, when Simon Wolcott crossed the Connecticut River from Windsor to maintain the first farm in the soon-to-be town, a lot of time has passed and history gets lost and forgotten along the way. I believe that life-long residents, as well as new residents, will appreciate this book’s format and people will be very surprised about how East Windsor was formed,” Donahue said.

Donahue and Bottomley, both raised in East Windsor, compiled photographs,

maps, and postcards from the collection of the East Windsor Historical Society and intertwined them with the memories, family histories and photographs they collected from community members. As a nod to these contributing residents, the authors dedicated the book to “all amateur historians of East Windsor who kept a photograph or wrote a paragraph to keep the town history alive.”

“My favorite parts,” Bottomley said, “are the unexpected tidbits of information that you’ll find throughout the book.

Just tiny fragments that surprise you and make you proud to be from East Windsor.”

The event will include free ice cream, horse-drawn wagon rides, and other free offerings and demonstrations in celebration of not only the book’s release but the bicentennial of East Windsor Academy and the grand opening of the fully restored historic Osborn House, originally built in 1785. This event is free and open to the public.

Lack of state agreement forces town budget freeze

ELLINGTON — The town budget freeze is continuing as the state Legislature so far is unsuccessfully working toward a budget for the 2017-18 fiscal year, which began July 1.

First Selectman Lori Spielman told the Board of Selectmen at its July 10 meeting that the budget freeze affects more than $2 million in town spending. The budget items included in the spending freeze, totaling $2,012,604, are: Executive secretary going from part time to full time, $5,590.

Pool car/town staff vehicle, $30,000.

Youth service full-time position moved from grant, $39,494.

Ellington Volunteer Fire Department generator, $55,000.

Senior Center full-time position with benefits, $59,520.

Board of Education funding for Windermere School cafeteria air conditioning, $85,500.

Crystal Lake Fire Department breathing apparatus, $190,000.

Department of Public Works plow truck, $200,000.

Ellington Volunteer Fire Department breathing apparatus, $500,000.

Triple pumper for the Ellington Volunteer Fire Department, $657,500.

Selectman Aaron Foster asked why the breathing apparatus and trucks are included since they are being leased over a five-year period, according to the meeting minutes.

Spielman said she wants to see what Gov. Dannel P. Malloy will do before releasing the funds.

Foster said residents approved those budget items in a referendum. Spielman replied that state budget conditions have changed and that could affect the town.

She said spending needs to be closely monitored to avoid raising taxes.

Magic, music and Mystic on tap at Hall Memorial Library this month ELLINGTON — Hall Memorial Library has programs on magic, music, and Mystic Aquarium on the schedule for August.

On Tuesday, Aug. 8, Mystic Aquarium will to present two shows at the library. For children in grades 1-3 “Whale Tales” will take place from 1 p.m.-1:45 p.m. Through interactive activities, students discover the many adaptations beluga whales have for sur-

vival in their ocean habitat. For children in grades 4-6, “Invertebrate Lab” will take place from 2 p.m.-2:45 p.m. In this class, students classify live marine invertebrates into groups based upon their common characteristics. Both classes include live invertebrate touch tanks. Online registration is required for these programs.

Babysitting courses and basketball on rec calendar

ENFIELD — The Parks and Recreation Department is offering two different levels of babysitter safety courses, along with adult open gym basketball, in August.

Babysitter safety course 101 This program is an entry level course for ages 10 to 15.

Participants will learn age-appropriate skills necessary to care for children of all ages using team babysitting, mother’s helper, and individual babysitting concepts.

All participants will receive a CD-book, handouts, and a babysitter safety certificate.

The class will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16, at Angelo Lamagna Activity Center, 19 N. Main St. The fee is $46 for residents, $57.50 for nonresidents.

Pre-registration is required for this program. Registration can be done online or in person at the recreation office.

Babysitter safety course 102 This course is for those ages 13 to 16 who have a sincere interest in advanced concepts and skills of first-aid, including CPR certification. Prerequisite is babysitter safety 101 within the past 360 days.

The class will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 16, at Angelo Lamagna Activity Center, 19 N. Main St. The fee is $46 for residents, $57.50 for nonresidents.

‘Red’ Edgar leaves a ‘legacy of public service’

ENFIELD — Longtime Enfield Town Councilman William “Red” Edgar Jr., who served on the council for close to 20 years and as the minority leader since 2013, died July 19. He was 88.

“Red lived in Enfield his entire life and was a tireless advocate for veterans,” state Sen. John Kissel said. “Time and time again Red stood up for what was best for the residents of Enfield and he will be missed dearly by many. He leaves behind a wonderful family, many friends, and a legacy of public service. My thoughts and prayers go out to Red’s family during this difficult time.”

Edgar also served for over 20 years as a national service officer for AmVets.

Town takes steps to improve river access

EHS grad earns Parkway scholarship ENFIELD — Parkway Pavilion Healthcare’s Residents Council has awarded its annual scholarship to Enfield High School graduate Dillon DeSouza.

The scholarship was presented June 23 at Parkway Pavilion Healthcare by members of the Residents Council. Scholarship dollars are raised during the year through a variety of events and activities.

DeSouza has a strong desire to help others and is raising his fifth Fidelco Guide Dog puppy. His hobbies include soccer and volleyball. DeSouza’s high school athletic trainer kept him healthy during volleyball sea-

son, which was instrumental for his being recruited to play volleyball at Lasell College in Massachusetts, where he will be working toward a career as an athletic trainer. His goal is to work with high school students.

Only students pursuing a career in healthcare are eligible to apply for the scholarship. The recipients were selected by Parkway residents based on an application, letters of recommendation and a completed essay.

Parkway Pavilion Healthcare has been awarding scholarships for a number of years. The idea stemmed from several former schoolteachers in residence.

ENFIELD — The town is moving closer to having better access to the Connecticut River.

The Town Council voted at its July 3 meeting to enter into a contract with BL Companies Connecticut Inc. for consulting engineering services for the design of the Connecticut River Access Multipurpose Path.

The town was awarded a Federal Highway Administration grant to provide river access. The design phase cost is $118,000, according to the meeting minutes, and includes engineering, concepts, and permits.

Town Manager Bryan Chodkowski said, when complete, motor vehicle traffic under the Asnuntuck viaduct will be prohibited and access will be limited to pedestrian and bicycle use. He said removable bollards will be installed for emergency vehicle access.

The cost of the project is $3.4 million, with 20 percent or $680,000 being the town’s responsibility and the rest being covered by the grant, Chodkowski said.

The town manager said several hundred thousand dollars were spent in the initial design phase.

Therefore, not all of the funds are still available for the town to spend on the project.

Mass. firm chosen for work at Somersville Mill site

A request for approval to award the contract to Costello Dismantling has been made to the state Department of Economic and Community Development, Office of Brownfield Remediation and Development.

Town officials are still awaiting its response from the DECD brownfield remediation office.

The mill site will become a planned development district once the demolition work is complete.

SOMERS — The Somersville Mill Demolition and Restoration Project has been awarded to Costello Dismantling of West Wareham, Massachusetts.

Costello Dismantling submitted the lowest bid for the project at $2,450,250, according to the town Engineering Department.

The contractor’s performance and payment bonds and the insurance certificates have been received.

Historical Museum open Aug. 13

SOMERS — The Somers Historical Museum will be open from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 13.

Many items from Somers history are featured in the museum on 11 Battle St. Those who visit the museum will be able to review old school photos

from Somers.

Among other items on display are Dr. Woods’ Civil War letters to his wife and children, and pages of photos and history from the Somersville Manufacturing Co. All are welcome. Admission is free.

Donations are welcome.

Fed-up homeowners take their case to feds Stafford

STAFFORD — The Connecticut Coalition Against Crumbling Basements is taking its case to the federal level.

On July 21, Tim Heim, president of CCACB, along with numerous homeowners, filed a complaint with the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Hartford.

“The complaint calls for a federal investigation into the crumbling concrete crisis that plagues Connecticut,” it states.

The complaint asks the U.S. attorney to investiga-

tion all state and local officials involved, as well as those who served as experts in the matter, to find out their scope and depth and knowledge of the matter and their action or inaction.

The materials for the foundations came from the J.J. Mottes Co. of Stafford.

SUFFIELD — The New Faces 2017 theater program is designed to teach, inspire and develop the talents of all participants. This summer theatre educational program showcases new actors, directors and playwrights.

New Faces 2017 will perform at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 19 at Mapleton Hall, 1305 Mapleton Ave., Suffield.

Now in its sixth year, the program is a fresh approach to theater, as many of the thespians involved are new to acting or new to The Suffield Players, and the works being performed are new as well.

Eight talented directors will lead the learning, and 21 actors from Western Massachusetts and Connecticut will participate.

Suffield Babb’s Beach reopens, nonresident fees imposed

SUFFIELD — After years of hard work and fundraising, Babb’s Beach is open.

Formerly a skating rink and beach area, the Citizens Restoring Congamond worked with the town to restore the area as a beach and recreation facility.

The Babb family operated a summer lake resort on the shores of Congamond Lake beginning in the late 1890s.

The rink was built around 1930 as a dance hall. The

Babb family donated the property to the town in 1977.

The rink closed in 1996.

Due to problems with trash and rule violations over the July 4 weekend, First Selectman Melissa Mack has imposed parking fees for out-of-town visitors.

Littering, dogs and alcohol use are prohibited at Babb’s Beach.

At the July 12 Parks and Recreation Commission meeting, commissioners were told that there were 221 visitors on July 4, with the majority of those at the

The gathering, organized by the Kent Memorial Library, will be led by Karl Cicitto of Society for American Baseball Research.

on the 1950s, 1970s and 1990s, and the contest will be suitable for baseball fans of any level of expertise. There will be prizes and food available.

Wendy LaMontagne, parks and recreation director, said during July there were 800 people at the park and beach, with 291 being from Suffield and 465 from out of town. The balance were children.

Located at 435 Babb’s Road, West Suffield, the park is open daily from 8 a.m. to dusk.

Volunteer appreciation luncheon planned at Senior Center Aug. 14

SUFFIELD — Volunteers are an important part of what makes the Suffield Senior Center successful.

The volunteers are a great group of people who give of their time in helping to make things run smoothly.

To show its appreciation, the Suffield Senior Center is inviting all volunteers to a volunteer appreciation luncheon at noon Monday, Aug. 14, at

the Seasons Restaurant at Suffield by the River.

The Suffield Rotary Club is sponsoring this luncheon so the Senior Center can show its volunteers just how important they are to the center.

Those volunteers interested in attending should let the Senior Center know by Thursday, Aug. 10.
