Enjoy dinosaurthemed crafts, games and activities including a photo op, cake walk, bounce house, balloon artists and face painters. CLUB CURIOSITY: PERCUSSION THINGS

Stories come to life at this engaging and dramatic performance by Percussion Things! Storyteller Cathy Whiteman and percussionist Len Barnett combine interactive stories and family-focused sketch comedy with high-energy percussion for a fun, fast-paced exploration of cultures through words, sounds and movement. This program is supported in part by a grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts.

DINO DIG

Dig into prehistoric fun at our Dino Dig. Families with children younger than 12 can excavate dinosaur “bones” in outdoor sensory tables, then assemble their discovery and take home a 3D printed dinosaur. Two 30-minute sessions are available with limited family sign-ups, so reserve a spot before they go extinct!

CLUB CURIOSITY: DINO BO: “JURASSIC PARK” VS REALITY

2:30 p.m. Monday, June 22

What if everything you knew about dinosaurs from the movies was wrong? In “Jurassic Park” vs. Reality, participants will compare scenes from the “Jurassic Park” and “Jurassic World” films with what science says about dinosaurs. Explore fossil evidence, dinosaur behavior and the latest discoveries in paleontology in this engaging program for young dinosaur enthusiasts.

CREATE AND CELEBRATE: INDEPENDENCE DAY

Celebrate Independence Day at the library! Families with children ages 12 and younger can drop in for an hour of festive fun with two craft stations. Make a paper plate flag, a patriotic firecracker or both while supplies last.

FAMILY LAB: DINO AND VOLCANO DAY

Families with children ages 12 and younger are invited to explore science and creativity in this STEAM program. After a short presentation about volcanoes and their connection to the age of dinosaurs, participants will build their own volcano model, sculpt mini dinosaurs and take part in a volcano experiment. Participating children will also receive a dinosaur figurine to take home.

CHOMPSAW© CHALLENGE: DINOSAURS

2:30-4 p.m. Monday, July 20

Families are invited to take part in the ChompSaw© Challenge. Work together using this kid-safe power tool to create 3D dinosaur puzzles from cardboard to customize and take home. At least one adult must attend with each family.

PEROT TECH TRUCK COMMUNITY SCIENCE MEETUP

2:30-4 p.m. Friday, July 24

Experience hands-on science with the Perot Museum’s TECH Truck. Kids and families can engage in maker-based science, technology, engineering, art and math experiences that encourage creativity and confidence.

Curiosity Corner Makerspace (Ages 13+)

INTRODUCTORY MAKER CLASSES

Learn about the Curiosity Corner makerspace and develop maker techniques using our machines! These skills include laser cutting, 3D and 2D design, 3D printing, vinyl cutting (Cricut), soldering and more. Taking an intro class on a machine will let you use that machine during any Open Lab. Most intro classes are available on the library’s website. Laser cutting classes are only available in person. A valid library card is required to use and take classes in the makerspace.

INTRO TO LASER CUTTING

6 p.m. Mondays, June 8 and 22, July 13 and 27, and Aug. 10

Learn the basics of laser cutting in this introductory makerspace class. Participants will learn how to operate the laser cutting machine and understand the fundamentals of the process. This training prepares patrons to use the library’s laser cutter independently.

SEWING LAB

Work on projects, cut patterns and connect with others. Participants can borrow patterns, use sewing tools, and receive help reading patterns or troubleshooting projects from makerspace staff. Sewing machines are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

CROCHET CORNER

6-7:30 p.m. Wednesdays, June 3, July 8 and Aug. 5

Beginners and experienced crocheters can enjoy a cozy hour working through a project from the monthly Crochet Corner display with step-by-step guidance. Some hooks and yarn will be available, though supplies are limited, and participants are encouraged to bring their own. Beginners are welcome, but please be advised that this program is not a structured class.

HEAT PRESS SUBLIMATION WORKSHOP

Learn about the sublimation process and how to use the heat press. Participants will gain a basic understanding of the technique and how it can be used to create custom designs.

BEGINNER CHAIN MAIL

3 p.m. Saturday, June 6

Learn the basics of chain mail weaving. Participants will create a two-color chain mail bracelet using the box weave technique and take home a finished piece they can wear. Examples of other chain mail designs will be shown. The craft requires moderate grip strength and repetitive wrist motion.

Create your own zine and unleash your creativity at the library. Participants will learn the basics of zine making and create an eight-page, self-published booklet that encourages selfexpression. Finished zines can be taken home or displayed in the makerspace.

Get creative and sustainable at the library by designing a one-of-a-kind tote bag using recycled fabric scraps. Participants will hand sew and decorate their bags while learning simple techniques for turning leftover materials into something useful. All materials will be provided, though participants are welcome to bring their own fabric scraps.

Experienced crocheters are invited to try something new in this workshop. Participants will learn how to start a tapestry crochet project and choose from a variety of design templates to incorporate into their piece This class is for advanced beginners to intermediate crocheters who are comfortable with slip knots, chains and single crochet. Materials will be provided, though bringing your own yarn and hooks is encouraged.

Teens and adults with a valid Garland Library card and signed waiver can use makerspace tools and supplies during Open Lab hours. Introductory classes are required for some machines. Check the Library calendar for Open Lab availability.

Explore the art of Sumi-e painting in this mindful workshop focused on simple brush strokes and natural forms. STORIES: LEARN TO WRITE YOUR MEMOIR

Led by retired professor and published poet Joan Canby, this four-part memoir writing series guides participants from concept to public presentation. Instructional sessions explore the purpose of memoir techniques for organizing life events, genre selection, memory prompts and approaches to structuring a personal narrative.
