After a relaxing Christmas and New Year NZMA has already started 2014 with a bang!

Our Sylvia Park campus is now up and running and preparing for the students arrival. Whilst NZMA’s brand new website has gone fully live, providing huge amounts of information, links and resources for all our future, past and present students.

NZMA Careers has been busy working hard over the holidays so in 2014 we can work to bring more opportunities and activities for all our students.

Inside this issue of Career Talk you’ll find the usual handy hints, tips and advice along with all our latest vacancies and full contact information.

Know Your Rights Students volunteer for Hospice West Auckland It’s been a long time in the making but finally the new NZMA campus at Sylvia Park is here, bringing with it all the brand new state of the art facilities it has to offer. The purpose built facility has two fully equipped brand new kitchens, a huge restaurant and outdoor cafÊ area, so each student will be able to put the skills and knowledge from their course into practice every step of the way!

These artist visions are now a reality and the campus is a fully functioning opportunity for all of our NZMA students to work to get the best out of their studies.

The Sylvia Park campus is the new home for all our previous Auckland Central and Panmure students, it also has scope to become even bigger and better with the space to grow in the future.

Sylvia Park is superbly situated in the middle of the vibrant and expanding hub of Mount Wellington and the Sylvia Park shopping centre. It is also fully served by surrounding easily accessible transport links to routes across Auckland.

Know Your Rights What is the difference between wages and salary?

Wages are payment for a certain amount for time worked. Normally this is per hour, for the number of hours actually worked. Salary, on the other hand, is a fixed amount, normally per year, regardless of the number of hours worked.

What is commission?

Commission is payment based on sales made or other kinds of targets met. It can be, for example, payment of a percentage of the total value of a sale made. Some people are employed on commission only; others may have a base hourly wage rate and paid a sales commission on top of this. If you’re paid on commission, you should still expect to receive at least the minimum wage.

How much should I be paid?

Wages, salary, commission and piece rates are matters which are negotiable between an employer and employee. You can be paid whatever rate that you agree to, so long as it is above the statutory minimum wage rate.

The minimum wage is the amount that must at least be paid to an employee over the age of 16. The rates are set by the government and may change each year or every couple of years.

Other than the minimum wages set by law, there are no set standard or minimum industry wage rates. However, Kiwi Careers offers some guidelines as to what may be an appropriate rate for your industry and the type of work you do.

When should I get paid?

This can vary from job to job – there is no standard. The timing and frequency of your pay are normally contained in your employment agreement. It could state what day of the week you are paid, and at what interval, e.g. weekly, fortnightly, monthly. Your employment agreement should say how often you will be getting paid.

To make sure you get your first pay paid on time, give your employer all the right details (like your bank account and IRD number) so that they can pay you.

If you aren’t getting paid on time, have a talk to your employer and ask them why. You can call the Department of Labour’s Contact Centre on 0800 20 90 20 to find out what your rights are and what you can do.

Should I be getting a pay slip?

Legally employers don’t have to give you a pay slip, although many employers do. However, employers must keep wage and time records, which set out (amongst other things) what hours you have worked, your pay rate and how much you have been paid. You (or your representative, if you have one) have the right to have a look at the wage and time records that relate to your employment at any time, and take copies. Employers have to keep wage and time records for six years.

Should I get any holiday pay included in my pay?

You will only get holiday pay as part of your regular pay if you are either a casual worker whose work is so irregular that it is impracticable to provide holidays, or you’re on a fixed term agreement (i.e. one that ends on a certain date because of a specific reason). If neither of these applies, then you should not be receiving holiday pay as part of your regular pay. You will receive holiday pay either when you take a holiday, or agree with your employer to cash up some of your holiday entitlement, or your employment ends.

This is his success story……..

“I am opening a Bar and Restaurant which includes 3-4 function rooms called “The Western” which is located in the Hamilton CBD. Over the last 14 weeks I have been attending NZMA Hospitality Level 3 course, and with the knowledge that NZMA and the tutors have taught me, I feel confident that my business will be a success.

I would like to give something back to NZMA and more importantly the students who attend the Hospitality courses. I will be needing staff as functions will be part of my business and I will approach NZMA for 4-5 staff for work experience in the industry, together with a work reference to assist them in their employment. If they show outstanding work I will offer them employment within my business.

I am set to open on 1 February 2014. Before then I will be employing staff for the Bar and Restaurant and will use NZMA as my first search for employees”.

Well, the CV & Cover Letter Workshops are where you will create your own CV and also a Cover Letter. These are vital tools for your career development and will help you with the employment skills section of your course.

The Interview Skills Workshop is a chance for you to polish your interview skills! You’ll take part in a ‘mock interview’ so will experience what it might be like to have an interview and be faced with some of the types of questions you may get asked. Again this is to help you for your future career progression.

Supervisor Both the sessions are about having fun and helping you create tools which you can use in the future to help you secure work experience or take with you on to further study!

Student Support at NZMA

We want your experience to be trouble free so you can focus on learning. If you need help with a personal problem or simply someone to listen, please approach your student support coordinator, Amy Prebble. She is available each week across all NZMA campuses to meet with students. Some of the concerns students bring to her are accommodation related, family/ relationship breakdown or mental health/stress related. Contact her directly by email, text or make an appointment through your student advisor or at reception.

Alternatively simply approach your tutor, student advisor or some other staff member you feel comfortable with for information. At NZMA we genuinely care about our students and make it a priority to be aware of all kinds of support you can be connected to within our community.

Student Advisors are able to provide information about enrolment, Studylink loans, allowances and childcare subsidies and facilities.

Market Managers help international students with insurance, visa and accommodation information Student Support Coordinator can offer information referral or free counselling.
