The past 12 months has been a period of immense change for NZMA Careers however as you’ll see from this issue the hard work has really paid off!

Apart from holding the first annual NZMA Careers Fair, NZMA Careers have introduced several large new employers, built new relationships with industry partners and also managed to find work for you the NZMA student.

As we look toward 2014 NZMA Careers is already planning new events and initiatives to build on the success of 2013 and help our students reach their potential through employment opportunities and further study.

We’d all like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has been a part of NZMA Careers achievements in 2013 and we can’t wait to get started in 2014.

Know Your TheRights 2013 Achievements Students volunteer for Hospice West Auckland 2013 saw NZMA Careers create employment opportunities!!!!

Students entered into work experience, the first step on the ladder to gain invaluable experience in their chosen career.

Students went into casual employment to support their studies and gain valuable work experience to start their careers.

Students went into fixed term employment, made up of a number of Hospitality Diploma Internships and students who worked for a fixed period for events.

Successful students who after studying hard and completing their studies then continued into PERMANENT employment after leaving NZMA.

These results combine to reach a huge up on the results from 2012!!!!

The Annual NZMA Careers Fair Know Your Rights The 24th October saw the first of NZMA’s Annual Careers Fair hosted by NZMA Careers.

With over 600 students from all of the NZMA Campuses in attendance the day was set to be a huge success from the start. The 27 exhibitors were poised and ready to meet the students and staff and discuss what they had to offer.

Feedback from the day was great with the students and exhibitors finding the event really useful and a great opportunity to build contacts in the industry.

So far from the day we know of approximately 15 interviews, over 15 students signing contracts at the event and several more hoping to in the following weeks. Thanks to 2013 ‘s success, 2014 will now see an NZMA Careers Fair in both Auckland and the Waikato

Over half of them exhibitors agreed that they would be excited to attend again next year and that overall they though it was a “Great event, well organised and the student ambassadors were really helpful!”

NZMA Careers would like to say a huge congratulations to everyone who successfully secured a job or an interview as a result of the Careers Fair … here’s to next year!!!!

Finance Matters - Get Sussed for 2014!!

NZMA students from the Waikato Campus were employed for “The Fight of the Century� at the Claudelands Event Centre in Hamilton on Saturday 16 November.

Students took on various roles across the Corporate Hospitality Division at Montana Catering. Here students were able to put their skills and NZMA training into practise.

Our Students were working together under pressure with other Montana staff to cater for a total of 1140 Corporate guests in the Arena Dining Room and were able to demonstrate their professional and efficient manner.

Montana Catering also runs the Waikato Stadium and Cambridge Raceway and have recently become an employer partner of NZMA and are committed to regularly recruit students to staff all their major events. The roles are mainly on a part time and casual basis.

New Zealand CulinaryPartnerships Fare 2013 Employer

Milk and Honey is a social enterprise which has a strong focus on giving back to the community.

They are the non-profit arm of the Talking Tech Foundation which is based in Hamilton and their aim is to have their café and function space busy and successful.

They have approached NZMA recently to work together to achieve these objectives and at the same time, providing valuable on the job training and work experience for our students.

This will be on-going opportunity and will give our NZMA Hospitality students valuable work experience in a beautiful environment.

Darian Panui has been our first student who started starting at Milk & Honey on November 7 for a two week period and says “lovely staff,

awesome on-going training and a lovely environment to work”.

Hopefully this will be the beginnings of another successful industry partnership with NZMA.

New Zealand CulinaryPartnerships Fare 2013 Employer TWO WAIKATO HOSPITALITY STUDENTS WORKING AT FUTUREFORCE ACTION NETWORK Futureforce Action Network (FAN) is a ground-breaking Smart Waikato Trust initiative uniting and equipping employers to more effectively incorporate young people into the workplace.

A strong contingent of Employers, Tertiary organisations and Private Training Establishments, Gateway and Careers teachers were registered for the launching of this event which took place in early November at the Gallagher Group.

The Campus Principal and Employment Advisor attended this function of over 150 people and two of our Hospitality Stars, Darian Panui and Kristal Brennan were on hand to pour drinks and serve food.

NZMA featured centrefold along with other advertisers in their magazine “Waikato’s Futureforce”. We have recently registered as members of this valuable free network.

Student Success Student Success Profile New Zealand Culinary FareProfile 2013 NAME: Junior Afiamalu WHERE ARE YOU FROM? Born in Samoa (Apia), moved to NZ when I was 4yrs old and raised in Papatoetoe BACKGROUND: To be honest, during my high school years, I did “play up” a bit so I decided (with the advice of others) to try another option in regards to continuing my education.

I then enrolled at NZMA with Jay, my student advisor at the time, and started my journey towards gaining some qualifications It was a bumpy ride at times BUT I got through with all the support from my family and the NZMA team!

WHICH NZMA CAMPUS DID YOU STUDY AT AND WHAT COURSE/COURSES DID YOU COMPLETE? Auckland South Campus I enrolled into the Youth Guarantee Progamme (YGP) of 2012 and achieved the National Certificate in Business Administration Level 2 and then the National Certificate in Retail Level 3 .

WHAT WERE SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS OF YOUR COURSE? Even though I was enrolled into YGP, I never felt like I couldn’t mix with the other students in the other levels and cause of this, one memory which sticks out was being able to form a singing group involving other NZMA students and then performing at the Mangere Town Centre, in support of NZMAs Kapa Haka group’s first public performance HAVE YOU GRADUATED YET?
