Careers Fair 2013 Update Know Your Rights Update on our Careers Fair It is less than a month to go now until a range of organisations and employers will come to NZMA’s Auckland City Campus to meet YOU! You might be wondering what has happened since my last contribution to the Career Talk magazine, so here is your update:

New companies on board: In addition to the companies who had already decided to exhibit at the Careers Fair by the last issue, we are happy to announce that we will also be welcoming the Millennium Copthorne Hotel Group, Brosnan Construction, Air New Zealand, the Globe Bar and Stray Travel.

Before the Careers Fair: Your Employment & Careers Advisor will tour the classrooms in the week before the Careers Fair. We want to make sure that all of you have a high chance to score a job and/ or make contacts that will be helpful for your career in the future. This is why we will give you some hints and tips on how to prepare for the Careers Fair. Also, we will distribute a printed journal with profiles of all attending companies and organisations of the Careers Fair. Make sure you grab one and find out beforehand which companies you would like to approach. We also love when you acquire new skills and our employer contacts love when you show them. This is why we will also have some inter-campus competitions (read more on that in Jay’s contribution to this issue).

During the Careers Fair: The employers will each have a stand at our Careers Fair, many of them will also want to recruit new staff – so make sure you have your up-to-date CV with you. At the same time, some of the exhibitors will hold short presentations in an extra room to inform you about their company – for example Farmers, the Hilton Hotel or iinet. You will find the time of each of the presentations in the Careers Fair Journal as well, so you can plan ahead.

After the Careers Fair: We hope that by this time you will have had some fruitful job interviews at the careers fair, were able to showcase your skills during one of the competitions and have handed your CV to some of the employers. In the aftermath, it is always good to follow up with the people you talked to at the fair and thank them for their time. You can do this via e-mail, LinkedIn or via phone. To be able to do that, make sure you ask the employer representative you talk to for a business card or their name if they don’t have a card with them.

Know Your Rights - Trial Periods Students volunteer for Hospice West Auckland .Trial periods Employers can make an offer of employment to a prospective employee that includes a trial period of up to 90 days. Trial periods are voluntary, and must be agreed in writing and negotiated in good faith as part of the employment agreement. A trial period can’t be offered to an employee who has been previously employed by that employer.

An employee who is dismissed before the end of a trial period can’t raise a personal grievance on the grounds of unjustified dismissal. They can raise a personal grievance on other grounds, such as discrimination or harassment or unjustified action by the employer.

If any employment relationship problem arises, access to mediation is available at any point.

While an employer is not required to provide written reasons for an employee’s dismissal, there is an expectation that an employer, acting in good faith, would inform the employee as to why he or she has been dismissed. Any provisions about giving notice in the employment agreement will need to be adhered to.

Employees on trial periods are entitled to all other minimum employment rights, for example in relation to health and safety, employment agreements, minimum pay, annual holidays, public holidays, leave and equal pay.

NewAZealand day in the Culinary life of Fare an NZMA 2013 Student A day in Life of New Zealand Management Academies Auckland Central Campus. I wake up in the morning and first thing I think about is the CafĂŠ Fusion on level 6 at City Campus. When I catch the train to Britomart all the way from west Auckland it feels like its already been half the day. Get to class 5 minutes late every day and see a beautiful smile by the receptionist makes my day. Going to the class and try not to sleep in the class is a huge challenge for me; I do get over that challenge as the tutors make everything just so interesting. Break time is one of the best times of the day for me as I see all my mates from the campus and have shared pre-lunch in the morning. Again arrive to the class and assignment time where my head is flowing like a flood with words and Wikipedia ideas. Then finish class by 1pm and go for lunch with my mates @cafe Fusion. Then I like to mingle with some international students because I am an international student myself and love to know other cultures, behaviours and lifestyle. I have been in NZMA since past 2012 and will be here till 2015 as I will be completing my education. I am currently studying Diploma in Applied Hospitality management level 6 with internship. I have recently won 3 medals at the National Culinary Fare and 2 medals at the Regional Culinary fare. I also have a great passion for making coffee and latte art. I am a freelance mixologist. I enjoy being at NZMA as it is like a second home to me. Every teacher is like a mother and father and sometimes grandparents. NZMA has given me heaps of opportunity to explore my talent and which I have already done and many more to come. I love every single second of my time

at the city campus!! The NZMA Careers team has helped me so much to get the amount of jobs I have at the moment and also the amount of words I have in my CV because of the success I have gained so far while being at NZMA . I don’t think I would be who I am without NZMA. Every time I come to the campus I feel relaxed, secured, happy and just takes me to another level where I can improve my skills and learn at the same time!! Thanks to Abbas Burmawala ACC Hospitality Student

NZMA Strikes Culinary GOLD Well not just gold but silver and bronze, too!! The previous weekend saw several students from across all of our NZMA campuses competing in the Culinary Fair which took place in central Auckland and the Waikato. Under the different categories students had the chance to showcase their skills and expertise in a battle to win a medal. The categories included Cocktail Making, Barista and a challenge for the chefs.
