Careers Fair 2013 Know Your Rights The countdown has started and we are fast approaching the busy summer and Christmas season and the closing of our campuses for summer. To make sure we can provide as many work opportunities for you over summer, we are very busy at the moment with planning our Careers Fair for the 24 th October 2013. So what is going to happen? As of now, 13 companies have agreed to come to our city campus to present the work opportunities they offer to YOU. All students from all of our campuses will be attending the Careers Fair at that day (so it will be busy). So, which employers are attending the Careers Fair so far? Farmers Trading Company Ltd will attend the fair and start off with a 10 minute company presentation. Afterwards, they are keen on interviewing our retail students & graduates from Auckland South and Waikato campus for retail roles over summer. But also if you study hospitality or contact centre you might be interested in interviewing with farmers – just give us a shout and send your CV. We are also delighted to have the prestigious, 5 star The Langham Hotel with us for that day. If you are a hospitality student or graduate, who can work more than 20 hours per week, there might be a chance for you to impress the Langham team at the careers fair. They will accept CVs at the fair for roles as F&B Attendants, house persons, room attendants etc. so make sure your CVs will be up to date. As most of you know – since the start of this year we have a new course – Construction. For our construction students BCITO (an industry training body in the building and construction sector) will be present. They can help construction students by putting them in contact with employers who are hiring and/or helping them to successfully prepare for a role in construction. For our contact centre students & graduates and students who would like to volunteer we will have Greenpeace exhibiting. They are always looking for helping hands, so if you would like to volunteer don’t hesitate to approach the Greenpeace team at the Careers Fair. If you have previous Contact Centre experience and belief that you can make a difference, bring your CV for Greenpeace’s tele-fundraising roles! No matter whether you are a Hospitality, Retail or Construction student – if you like Rugby and customer service this is the place to gather some experience – Eden Park Stadium! Eden Park Catering employs more than 700 of our students on a casual basis as kitchen hands, cooks, runners, F&B Attendants or corporate stewards. If anyone wants to grab the application forms and get prepared for the next round of interviews – the Careers Fair is a good day to do so.

Also, don’t forget to bring your CV!
One of New Zealand’s leading hospitality companies with a diverse and popular range of Auckland bars and restaurants (for example, The Waterfront Café, Lenin, Bungalow8) is Showcase Hospitality – and they will be attending our Careers Fair as well. They always look for great hospo staff, so they will accept CVs at the Careers Fair and interview potential candidates on-site.

We would love to continue our success and how convenient that the Rendezvous Hotel will be accepting CVs at the Careers Fair. So if you are a hospitality or cookery student looking for unpaid work experience, an internship, casual work, part time work or even a graduate job – have your CV ready for Joanne! A new internationally operating recruitment consultancy called ICE will also attend our Careers Fair. They are a really young team there, everyone’s around the age of 26, so they are fun and nice to deal with. They will hold a presentation at the careers fair, so make sure you secure a seat and, if you like them, chat with them afterwards and drop off your CV with them!

A confirmed Guess Speaker at the Careers Fair will be Frog Recruitment, a current working partner of NZMA they will one not to miss!
Know Your Rights-Ending the Employment Relationship
Know Your Rights Students volunteer for Hospice West Auckland Ending the employment relationship There are several ways in which employment relationships may be ended, such as resignation, retirement, dismissal or redundancy. If an employee believes that an employer acted unjustifiably in ending the employment relationship, the employee can challenge the employer’s decision.
Resignation Employees may resign at any time, provided they give reasonable notice. The employment agreement should be checked to confirm notice periods and final pay should be calculated. If the employee gives the required notice, the employer must pay the employee to the end of the notice period, unless the employee is justifiably dismissed during that period. The employment relationship continues until that date. The employee may be required to work for the full notice period or may be asked to stop coming to work before this date. In either case, the employee should be paid to the end of the notice period. If pay is stopped before the end of the notice period, the employee may be able to claim for wages owed. If an employee leaves work without giving notice, the employer is not required to pay for time beyond the employee's last actual working day. The employer must not deduct pay in lieu of notice from any amount owed to the employee unless the employee agrees in writing or the employment agreement specifically allows it. The employer must pay all holiday pay owing to the employee in their final pay.
. For more information visit www.dol.govt.nz
Know Your Rights-Ending the Employment Relationship
Know Your Rights Dismissal There must be a good reason for a dismissal and the dismissal must be carried out fairly. Otherwise, the employee may have a personal grievance claim against the employer. What is fair depends on the circumstances. Any relevant provisions in the employment agreement must be followed. If an employment agreement does not have a notice period, then reasonable notice must be given. Employees have the right to be told what the problem is and that dismissal or other disciplinary action is a possibility. Employees must then be given a genuine opportunity to tell their side of the story before the employer decides what to do. The employer should investigate any allegations of misconduct thoroughly and without prejudice. Unless there has been misconduct so serious that it warrants instant dismissal, the employee should be given clear standards to aim for and a genuine opportunity to improve. If an employee is dismissed, he or she has the right under the Employment Relations Act to ask the employer for a written statement of the reasons for dismissal. This request can be made up to 60 days after they find out about the dismissal. The employer must provide the written statement within 14 days of such a request. If the employer fails to provide this written statement, the employee may consequently be able to raise a grievance after the required 90-day limitation period. There are some different provisions applying to dismissal during a trial period.

NZMA Stories A wordStudent from ourSuccess students... Mikayla Barclay-Smith tells us about her experiences studying Retail and now National Certificate in Supervision Level 5. Her story……
What made you choose a Retail Course? I chose Retail because I like clothing and fashion jewellery stores, and I would like to work in one some day.
What are your career goals? My career goal is to one day own my own clothing and fashion jewellery store. I would also like to expand my business later to make It nationwide.
Where are you at the moment? Right now I am currently studying the National Certificate in Supervision Level 5 as well as doing my internship in the NZMA Waikato Campus Retail Therapy Store.
Why do you want to work in Retail? I want to work in Retail because I’ve always liked the atmosphere in my favourite stores and I’ve always wanted to work in stores like Jay Jays and Glassons.
Why did you want to work in the NZMA Retail Therapy Shop? I wanted to work in Retail Therapy because it would give me more experience in the retail industry as well as more self confidence. I used to be very shy and quiet, but since starting this course and working in the store, I have gained more self confidence.
A word from our students...
What do you believe are the three top skills for a retail position? I believe that the three top skills for a retail position are confidence, friendliness and a willingness to help customers find the right product for them in any store.
What do you know about products and services? I know that customers like a friendly service and they (the customers) like it when the salesperson knows what they are talking about when it comes to the products they are selling in the store.
If a customer complains what would you do? If a customer was to complain, I would kindly ask the customer to tell me what the problem was in a calm manner. I would then let them know how I could help them and I would make sure the customer was happy with the outcome.
Why did you choose CSUP Level 5 and how do you think it will relate to your Retail career? I chose to do CSUP5 because it will help me learn more about Human Resources and team management skills which I believe will really assist me if I want to start up my own store later on in life.
With thanks to Mikayla & Barbara from our Waikato Campus
