Winners Of 2015 Diplomático World Tournament Announced Sai Hamsala (NZMA graduate) Takes Home Grand Prize at the 2015 World Tournament Bartender Competition Rum Diplomático announced winners of the 2015 Diplomático World Tournament Finals. Sai Hamsala (New Zealand) trumped his twenty-seven competitors and took first place with his sophisticated cocktail, Just In Time, brought home the grand prize of $10,000 and prestigious title of Diplomático’s World Best Bartender. Orlando Marzo (Australia) took 2nd place winning $5,000 and José Luis León (Mexico) came in 3rd place earning a prize of $2,500. This is the 2nd installment of the biennial competition sponsored by the award-winning Venezuelan rum and was hosted again by Ian Burrell, renowned global rum ambassador. “I have always dreamt of winning a global cocktail world tournament. I feel that I have achieved something very big thanks to all the passion and work I have put into bartending for the past 8 years,” said first place winner Sai Hamsala. Contestants underwent three final rounds and were judged on their original cocktail creations based upon three main criteria of technique, presentation, décor and garnish and organoleptic subjects (such as taste, texture, aroma and balance). Finalists were also tested on their knowledge of Diplomático and the rum category as a whole. All finalists participated in a distillery tour, guided tastings led by Master Blender Tito Cordero and had an opportunity to visit the beautiful Morrocoy National Park. “We congratulate Sai on winning the 2015 Diplomático World Tournament as it was well deserved. We also look forward to future tournaments and experiencing first hand all the innovation that can be found in the cocktail industry,” added Mr. Ballesteros.

CONGRATULATIONS SAI http://www.prweb.com/releases/2015/04/prweb12680055.htm

Careers Represent at Open Day—ASC Like any Open Day at NZMA, Careers join in 100% and representing hard! ASC took a different approach at the most recent ASC Open Day and decided to challenge all visitors, students and staff to answer, “The 10 Best IV Questions CEOs Ask”: 1. How would you describe yourself in one word? 2. What is the last thing you’ve learned on the job/course? 3. What didn’t you get a chance to include on your CV? 4. How long will it take before you succeed in this job? 5. What’s in the news today? 6. What makes you really special? If you were writing about yourself, what would you say? 7. What percentage of your life do you control? 8. Tell me your opinion on something.. 9. Describe a day where you’ve just had the greatest working day of your life. You’re driving home and you’re on cloud nine. What was it about that working day that made you so happy? 10. So (insert name), what’s your story? Answers ranged from interesting to brilliant! If you didn't make it round to the Careers table on Open Day, why not challenge yourself, and see how you go in answering these questions!

What is Work Experience and Why Should I Do It? Work experience is any paid or voluntary time that you spent in a workplace to get to know it better. There are many types of work experience, which can range from a one-off visit to a workplace, to internships that last months. Work experience lets you see if you'd enjoy doing a job on a day-to-day basis. During work experience you can see first-hand what happens in a typical day on the job. Getting a realistic idea of the positive and negative parts of a job helps you make a more informed choice. Meeting people in the job means you can ask them questions, such as what they like best about their job, how they ended up in their line of work, and what qualifications they have. You can learn about related jobs in the same field, which could give you more ideas about what kind of career you might go into. Job advertisements often ask for people with experience. Work experience can be the kind of experience an employer is looking for. It also proves you were motivated enough to find out about their industry. Doing work experience lets a potential employer see what kind of person you are - and you also get to find out about the employer. If the employer likes your attitude and you are a good fit for the company, there could be a potential job offer later on.

ASC YG visit Caffetteria Allpress

ASC YG students visited Caffetteria Allpress, a coffee roastery in Auckland City. Chris and the team lead us around the roastery while we sipped on single origin Sumatran coffee. Wired on caffeine we then stopped at the Sweat Shop on Sales Street for a bite to eat, to the surprise of the student the meals were massive, the service friendly and the atmosphere enjoyable; definitely an experience for them all. As luck would have it, their master brewer was also on site so we had a run down on the brewing process just for good measure. Written by William Levitt

Langham Hotel—Executive Chef Volker Marecek - Cookery Masterclass Today's class by Volker was fantastic. He was engaging with the students and served a Scallop Salad dish consisting of Scallops, little cos, sprout and mint. A highlight was him showing the students the use of Liquid Nitrogen with this dish... Volker is very experienced (30 years) and counts the famous Savoy Hotel in London as one of his past work experiences. The class was well attended, thank you for that Jas and the Cookery tutors. FYI: Cookery team, there are some video's if required for the students of this Masterclass. As you are aware Volker has left the recipe behind for the students to try and make themselves. St Pierre’s Sushi—Cookery Masterclass Culinary students enjoy learning the art of Sushi from Akiko—Sushi Chef from St Pierre’s Sushi.

How to tackle common interview questions

Preparing confident answers to common interview questions will give you the edge over the competition. Although there is no set format that every job interview will follow, there are some questions that you can almost guarantee will be asked. Here's a list of the most common questions and a guide on how to structure your answers. Tell me about yourself This is usually the opening question and the most important as first impressions are key. Begin your answer with an overview of your highest qualification then running through the jobs you've held so far in your career. Don't go into too much detail - your interviewer will ask for you to expand on any areas where they'd like more information. What are your strengths? Pick the three biggest attributes that you think will get you the job and give examples of how you have used these strengths in a work situation. Ideally these will be technical skills, whereby you can demonstrate how your knowledge in certain areas can benefit the company. Soft skills are also important so ensure you have given thought to what personality attributes make you a good hire. Cont. page 9

cont. How to tackle common interview questions What are your weaknesses? This question is best handled by picking something that you have made positive steps to redress. For example, if there is particular software you’ve not worked with in some time, state it as a weakness but tell the interviewer about training courses or time spent outside work hours you have used to improve your skills and keep them up to date. Why should we hire you? or What can you do for us that other candidates can't? What makes you special and where do your major strengths lie? You should be able to find out what they are looking for from the job description. "I have a unique combination of strong technical skills and the ability to build long-term customer relationships" is a good opening sentence, which can then lead onto a more specific example of something you have done so far in your career. What are your goals? or Where do you see yourself in five years time? It's best to talk about both short-term and long-term goals. Talk about the kind of job you'd eventually like to do and the various steps you will need to get there, relating this in some way back to the position you're interviewing for. Show the employer you have ambition, and that you have the determination to make the most of every job you have to get where you want to be. Why do you want to work here? The interviewer is listening for an answer that indicates you've given this some thought. If you've prepared for the interview properly, you should have a good inside knowledge of the company's values, mission statement, development plans and products. Use this information to describe how your goals and ambition matches their company ethos and how you would relish the opportunity to work for them.

Asia to dominate future wine consumption Asia, and particularly China, is projected to dominate global wine consumption and import growth this decade, according to a research from the University of Adelaide’s Wine Economics Research Centre. The research suggests that China’s net wine imports could rise by up to 790 million litres by 2018, which could be Professor Kym Anderson the executive director at the centre, has said: “It is the sheer size of China’s adult population of 1.1 billion people, and the fact that grape wine still accounts for less than four per cent of Chinese alcohol consumption, that makes the import growth opportunity unprecedented. “We project that China’s net imports of wine could rise by between 330 and 790 million litres during 2011-2018 once the full impacts of China’s recent bilateral free trade agreements with Australia, Chile and New Zealand are felt.” Professor Anderson added that while it’s true there has been a blip in the growth in China’s imports because of their austerity measures, “our expectations looking several years forward is that, that will be eclipsed by general growth in the demand for wine by the community at large, as distinct from those who have big expense sheets or are using it for gifting.” The growth area is more likely to be at the premium and super-premium end by ordinary consumers doing it for themselves not doing it for giving away as a gift or for lavish dining. The research was supported with funding from the Australian Grape and Wine Authority and the “Asia’s Evolving Role in Global Wine Markets” working paper can be downloaded from the Wine Education Research Centre’s website.
