FEATURE STORY

Jamie Oliver to open restaurant in Wellington Diners will soon be chowing down on British celebrity chef Jamie Oliver's dishes in the heart of Wellington. A Jamie's Italian restaurant is planned for the Public Trust building in Lambton Quay. Building owner and McKee Fehl managing director Maurice Clark said the restaurant would be an asset to the area. "It will bring a lot more life and activity down that end of town and we wish them every success." Jamie's Italian was founded in England in 2008 and has more than 30 restaurants worldwide. The first Down Under offering was opened in Sydney in October 2011. Its offers authentic, rustic dishes made out of seasonal ingredients and from tried and true recipes, with an added twist from Oliver, of course. Restaurant Association of New Zealand national president Mike Egan said it was interesting the restaurant was planned for the Parliament end of town. "It's a big move for them to go down that end, but people will be able to get parks easily," the Wellington restaurant owner said. Egan said the Oliver brand was big in Wellington, which meant people would go to the restaurant.

Masterclasses Inspire the Masses “Calling all ‘masters’ of their industries!” – This was the call our Careers Advisors Lani & Lee put out to some fo our favourite employmers! Debit Success, Coca-Cola, Westpac, ANZ & Sudima were some of the Employers that conducted some Masterclasses. With a focus on the areas of Business & Contact Centre, the talent and experiences shared by our invited ‘Masters’ was both generous and inspirational. Presenters had their own style of engaging their audiences, providing brilliant words of wisdom, advice & above all, showing passion for their work. ASC students not only attended in record numbers but also entertained the guest speakers with some unique answers to the question, “What animal best represents you? (one quick way to ensure an employer remembers you!). Massive thanks to all the presenters, aka ‘Masters’!

On the 24th March 2015, we (the Certificate in Supervision Level 5 class) had the privilege of having the guest speaker, Michelle who is the Human Resources Manager from Stamford Plaza hotel. A lot of the students were fascinated by the way she addressed the class. They were really inspired by her words of encouragement to the students having inspired everyone in supervision level 5. Michelle explained what to expect when attending a job interview, what are the requirements of working at Stamford Plaza Hotel, benefits for working at Stamford, recruiting employees to Stamford plaza hotel. Thank you to the Careers team (especially Lee from SPC) for giving us the opportunity to meet Michelle the HR Manager who took her time out of her busy schedule to give the students enlightenment on the ins and outs of Stamford Plaza hotel, the role as a HR manager for Stamford Plaza Hotel and the responsibilities that she has to carry out as the HR Manager on a daily basics. Thanks On Behalf of the Supervision Class and NZMA窶年avil Ram (Student Representative) Olivia Ahsin (Student Representative)

ASC INDUCTION IN THE CITY Q: What do you get when you mix—new students, those who have completed their first five weeks, Auckland City and an Amazing Race challenge… A: A super energised team building event!! ASC’s Induction continues to be enjoyed by our newest members of the NZMA whanau! Challenged with many Amazing Race tasks, each group gave sweat and tears, heart and soul in their attempt to win. But emphasising more than just winning, the challenge built inter-team/class relations, self-confidence (to approach strangers) and an overall positive vibe amongst the wider group – all attributes important for the classroom and careers! Well done to all who participated & of course, the winning team (pictured with Debbie)!

LATEST INDUSTRY TRENDS HOSPITALITY

- TOP 5 Conference Food

trends 1. Local is Everything The importance of adding a local feel to meetings has been identified as a major trend by IACC members. Attendees want to experience as much as they can about the destination they are going to for their meeting or event--and this includes locally-sourced ingredients for food & beverage consumed during their conference. 2. Network Your Heart Out Small plates of food items, continuously served in a reception format, add a welcome diversion to an extended meeting event and help maintain energy levels. Hosting networking-friendly dining receptions midway through an event is particularly effective as this provides a great way for guests to pause and meet up in a causal environment, initiate or build relationships, while recharging with exceptional food and beverage. 3. Small is the New Big! Bite-size desserts have overtaken larger portions in popularity—if for no other reason than conferees are watching their waistlines and cholesterol levels. Conference guests have turned their backs on generous sugary sweets, heading instead for easy-to-handle, bite-size desserts that satisfy without packing on the pounds. Warm miniature house-made donuts, chocolate truffles, French macaroons, mini cupcakes and house-made cookies are top of the list for planners—taste and pleasure without the calories! 4. In with Flavor, Out with Fats! Healthy choices don't need to resemble rabbit food. IACC member chefs are working with exciting new ingredients increasingly popular with conferees--including protein alternatives (quinoa, amaranth, tofu, beans), whole grains, leafy green vegetables (especially kale and spinach), low fat selections and low sugar substitutions. The result: healthy cuisine that sustains conferees through the meeting experience, appeals to the eye and satisfies the palate. 5. Making and Breaking Bread Together Nothing brings a team together more than food. Having the opportunity to cook alongside colleagues can create a whole new appreciation for the hidden talents within an office environment or at a company outing. Culinary teambuilding is red hot today as it has all the ingredients to cook up a winning team while bringing out the hidden chef in every conference.

A FOCUS ON INTERNSHIP: (Cookery & Hospitality @ NZMA Sylvia Park) Congratulations on finishing the academic component of your diploma!! The next approx. 5-6 months is your opportunity to immerse yourself in the industry you are studying. To put into practise all you have learned while still being supported by the NZMA Careers team. For many students, the internship programme has launched their Career in two ways. The first is by extending their professional networks and the second by enabling students to demonstrate and extend their considerable skill.
