FEATURE STORY Minimum Wage Increase The Government has announced that the Adult Minimum Wage will increase by 50c to $14.75 per hour from 1 April.  $14.75 per hour equates to $590 per week for a 40-hour week. The Minimum Wage Order changed on 26 June 2014 to include a fortnightly minimum wage rate (as well as the usual weekly rate). This means that employers who have salaried staff need to ensure that those employees working 80 hours per fortnight are being paid a minimum of $1,180 per fortnight. If employees work more than 80 hours in a fortnight, employers need to make sure they are paid at least $1,180 plus the minimum hourly rate of $14.75 for each extra hour worked. The starting-out and training minimum hourly rate will increase by 40c to $11.80 per hour.  $11.80 per hour equates to $472 per week for a 40-hour week.

The starting-out wage applies to:  16- and 17-year-olds in their first six months of employment with a new employer (or until they are training or supervising others, whichever comes first)  18- and 19-year-olds who have been paid a benefit for six months or longer and who have not completed six months of continuous work with any employer since starting on benefit (or until they are training or supervising others)  16- to 19-year-olds in a recognised industry training course involving at least 40 credits per year.

The training wage applies to:  Employees aged 20 years or over who are undertaking recognised industry training involving at least 60 credits per year as part of their employment agreement, in order to become qualified. For more information on the minimum wage, visit MBIE’s website www.mbie.govt.nz or call 0800

Questions to get to know... Peter Khong Peter is a Level 5 Hospitality Diploma student at our South Campus. Q: Where are you working? A: I’ve just landed a F&B Attendant role with Sudima Hotel near the Airport. Q: How did you get the job? A: Through a vacancy advertised through the NZMA Careers team. They submitted my CV on my behalf and 2 interviews later, I got the job! Q: What has been the best part of studying with NZMA? A: The friends I’ve made and the all the practical opportunities I’ve had. Q: What advice would give to those rising through the ranks of NZMA? A: Listen, attend & get involved; don’t sit back and let opportunities pass by. Share with us To ensure that Career Talk is awesome, we need you to be involved. ASC celebrate St Patrick's Day! St Patrick’s Day at South Campus was celebrated with an awesome three course meal. Hosted and prepared by tutor Hope and her Hospitality Level 3 students, the menu included a traditional Beef & Guinness Stew and Double Chocolate Irish Crème Cheesecake. Not only did staff & students get to enjoy the delicious food produced on the day, but the event also gave the students a fun and engaging event to be assessed on, without even feeling the sweat! Awesome effort s Team Hope!

Polyfest Vibe Alive With ASB Auckland Polyfest 2015 occurring in March, the ASC Retail students thought it best to put their Visual Merchandising skills to the test, and what a great job they did! The display space in Retail Therapy was adorned with cultural pieces from around the Pacific, from Tapa to hand held fans to weaved objects. Malo ‘aupito Retail team!

Construction Students — Manukau Courier (19th March 2015)

Tamaki College’s Mocktail Delights Papa Jack and Clyde (tutors) recently hosted a group of students from Tamaki College. These students, already studying Hospitality at their college, were able to swap their venue for a more realistic environment at South Auckland campus. Fun was had by all with some very unique & colourful creations made along the way! Thanks for visiting Tamaki College!!

Dessert Obsession Cafe Fusion diners were treated to a breath-taking array of desserts as part of today's lunch menu. Our Level 5 Gastronomy students designed a series of sweet treats around a specific ingredient including lime, milk, butter, sugar and salt. The results were almost too good to eat! A big round of applause to our students and to their tutor Darren. Speed Interviews The concept behind this is for the student to make a great first impression within a 23 minute formal interview process. This will be held on the campus at an area to be advised and will be ongoing for the next couple of months. The interview process will be conducted by members of NZMA Careers team, Lee Parker and Pavel Pleskot, whom are always in constant contact with today's employers and between them have 52 years (mostly Pavel - LOL!!) of Hospo experience. These interviews are totally voluntary and are being done to the benefit of the student. During the approx. 2-3 minute timeframe, we are hoping to see/gauge from the student the following: -FANTASTIC PASSION-GREAT ATTITUDE -EXCELLENT PRESENTATION PREPARED (i.e. what is it you want to achieve in Hospo/Cookery)

-BEING

This will be done for all levels of students and Pavel and I will make notes based on the above 'criteria'. This will overall assist us in placing students into long term sustainable employment.

Morning Tea Anyone? Chef Darren’s Level 5 Cookery class has planned and created two menus for our Thursday ‘Table d'hôtel’ Lunch. In restaurant terminology a table d'hôte menu is a menu where multi-course meals are charged at a fixed total price. The meals were of restaurant quality with excellent timing between courses. This of course takes a lot of work, attention to detail and team work. There were 25 guests including staff from ACG, NZMA associates and family of our students. Ksenia’s Level 4 Hospitality class stepped up to the plate and served as with class and style. Well done to all involved!! An ‘intimate’ Session with HipGroup Guest Speaker Andrew Baker from The Hipgroup (www.hipgroup.co.nz) with Level 5 Hospo students this morning discussing the Hipgroup, what they look for in students and spoke about current and future opportunities with their company. Of particular interest, on top of their current 15 establishments, they will be opening a 3 Level 600 seater restaurant in the CBD, details to follow. This will offer plenty of opportunities for passionate and career minded students.

Wor’x Infrastructure NZMA CSUP Project: Wor’x Infrastructure - run by Ray’s CSUP students are actively promoting, enforcing and assisting in the correct uniform and dress code through all programmes on Campus. These students are ambassadors for what we would like to represent on campus and to employers! Well done – you are AWESOME!

CAB present to WKO Retail Thank you to Shirley from the Citizen's Advice Bureau, who came in to talk to our Waikato retail students about customer complaints and industry processes - this is a really important topic, and we really appreciated you sharing your knowledge with us. CAB present to WKO Retail Also joining in the festive NZMA spirit of celebrating St Patricks Day was our WKO whanau! Decked out in all assortments of Green, WKO’s Café Fusion plated up a tasteful and aromatic Thai Green Curry, served by several & professional Hospitality students.

Mystery Creek Hospitality students were out at Mystery Creek serving the BA5 guests hosted by Waikato Chamber of Commerce and Mystery Creek Events Centre CEO. The students had a hand in preparing the canapé’s and when serving the guests, were able to inform the guests of the ingredients of what they were eating. We had positive feedback from both the employer, Stellar Kitchen, guests and CEO’s of both Mystery Creek and The Chamber of Commerce. Good job guys – you have done NZMA proud!!!

NZMA Careers popup with a twist!! NZMA students were privileged to have ambassadors from SJS visit our Campus. The ambassadors were happy to explain the process of how SJS works, who they are and what it could mean for our students seeking employment alongside their studies, what it means to gain work experience so when they graduate they will have a better chance at finding sustainable employment. SJS signed up 23 students! That’s an awesome result!!
