FEATURE STORY The Importance of Literacy and Numeracy and Employment!! According to a recent survey of New Zealand employers, literacy and numeracy are ranked in the top three skills that employers look for in an employee

Workforce literacy is one of the key skill shortages facing the New Zealand economy

.

An estimated 43% of New Zealanders have difficulty with the literacy demands of their job

An estimated 51% of adult workers have low numeracy.

At NZMA (New Zealand Management Academies) not only do we want you to complete your qualification! We also aim to increase your Literacy and Numeracy levels through different strategies practised in the classroom. We assess and analyse where you at at and if help is required we develop a simple customised plan to assist. If your Literacy and/or Numeracy levels increase you gain an additional certificate for your CV. Having good Literacy and Numeracy levels are vital when it comes to employment, opportunities for employment rise due to your skills and ability. Wanting to study further for higher qualifications? Increased Literacy and Numeracy levels will also assist with this. Just remember – anything is possible!

ASC Representation at Weetbix TRYathlon Auckland

On Sunday 22nd February, two students from ASC, Tequila and Ngaire (both Hospitality Diploma students) were employed by Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon to assist with their food & beverage stalls. Why did you volunteer to work this event? It was very different from the previous work I’ve done in Hospo, which has been bar work. What was your highlight of working this event? Seeing the children taking part was awesome. It was great to see that regardless of their placing, they were happy, joyful and excited. The support for all the children involved by their family and friends was AMAZING! What was your role at the event? I (Ngaire) was Barista support, so taking orders and assisting the Barista. I (Tequila), worked at the shaved ice stand. How did you hear about the role and did you find value from working this event? We found out about this vacancy through our ASC Careers team who are AMAZING! Any casual part time work is very valuable to us as it can be now put in our CVs and we have gained another Referee as well. We challenge all students to take up the opportunity of part time casual work when Careers offer it! Thanks to Ngaire & Tequila for your time.

Graduates Visit ASC Daisy is a NZMA Contact Centre graduate who visited ASC on her day off from her CSR role in a city fringe Contact Centre. With so many positive work stories to share with us, Daisy thanks her time at NZMA for partially contributing to her work success & enjoyment

Another graduate popping by, Mile, this time from the NZMA Trades Campus (Construction level 4), is working with a subcontracting on a residential project currently and is enjoying every bit of it! Mile gives great praise to the Trades Campus staff who she credits her amazing skills and knowledge to.

Great to see graduates come back and visit their place of study - NZMA South Campus!! Thanks for popping in Pilitia Margraff to let us know how well you've been doing in your CSR role at Onehunga Contact Centre!

BREAKFAST TREAT………... Chef Darren organised our Cookery students to create a beautiful breakfast buffet this week. They arrived on campus very early to ensure breakfast was ready to be served at 7am. The menu included omelettes, smoothies, berry cup and hot cakes.

Well done to all involved!!

“Master Class in Raw Cuisine……”

A little bit about our Master class host Jinu Abraham…... Jinu isn’t your stereotypical chef. He’s got a cool temper and loves creating dishes to please all food lovers. Originally from New Delhi, Jinu joined Heritage Auckland in 2003 as demi chef de partie, and has been executive chef since 2008. Jinu learnt a lot about vegetarian cuisine during his training in India. Inspired by Asian traditions, Jinu adds a Western twist to create delicious, healthy and sustainable dishes – like Macadamia cheese, crispy celeriac and candied walnut salad, Organic tofu & peas stuffed potato, and Cashew cheese & poached baby vegetable salad. He takes great care to source produce locally, and has trained his team well to ensure that every dish looks as good as it tastes.

Jinu’s not one to brag, and would rather let his food do the talking. Still, he has picked up an impressive range of accolades since first donning his Heritage apron. These include winning the New Zealand Vegetarian Dish Challenge 2012, New Zealand Culinary Fare winner of Unique New Zealand Dish 2005, a silver medal in Restaurant of the Year 2006, and a silver in Chef of the Year 2009, to name a few..

We look forward to Jinu’s Master Class on Thursday 12th March.………………...

Site Visit To Kingsgate Hotel An amazing morning was spent at Kingsgate Hotel by Krissy and her YG Hospitality Level 3 class! Students were shown around the foyer, conference areas and restaurants by Sandra Treloar. Students we then shown the gym, indoor pool, rooms, suites and laundry areas by Collin Maclarin. The students thoroughly enjoyed their visit and sound advice was given to them about hospitality “It is not all glamourous as it seems. It is hard work but very rewarding and most important it must be your passion....You are either passionate about it or loathe it with a passion!!

Visiting Montana Caterings’ Commercial Kitchen

Himanshu’s Diploma students were given the opportunity to visit Montana Catering’s massive commercial kitchen. Our students had good experience to see mass production and equipment at Montana Catering. Toyah (HR) also spoke about certain expectations they have form our students when applying for work. This was an eye-opener even for our Diploma students.

Himanshu also promoted Jesse Neiling and what amazing coffees he makes. Toyah was very impressed with Jesse that they would like him to make a you tube video of his coffee designs so that they can put it up on their Facebook page. Jesse has also been offered employment since the site visit. Well done Jesse and Himanshu — that is AWESOME!

Waikato’s Coffee Line!!! This project lead by Contact Centre Tutor Jo, is run daily by her students . The students take calls from Campus customers for coffee and other cold/hot beverage orders. This has been a huge success thus far and is helping Jo’s students build their confidence for when they launch their next campaign. Awesome job everyone!!! Watch this space……….

Some Customer Feedback….. “Awesome! Amazing” Chris: Student Services Manager “Very Professional” Coreen: Receptionist “Absolutely Fabulous!” Leanda: Campus Principal

Waikato’s YG Class Presentation Senior Tutor Ray and Careers Advisor Lorraine, were invited to enjoy an outstanding group presentations done by Leilani’s YG class. The topics presented were: What is Hospitality? What is Hospitality made of? And Types of Jobs…. Awesome and informed presentation Well Done!!
