Diplomats from all over the world travelled to Ngaruawahia last month to celebrate the Koroneihana (Coronation) of the Maori King, King Tuheitia. Apon arrival, they were warmly greeted by 59 students from NZMA Waikato who were gaining work experience at the three day event!

The students were employed by TNT Catering in a wide range of roles including front of house and back of house at the Turangawaewae Marae and King’s Office and front of house, back of house and as room attendants, porters and doormen at Tainui College.

NZMA Careers Employment Advisor Lorraine Van Lingen said the event provided a unique opportunity for the students, and one that would look great on their CVs. “The students made me very proud to be a part of NZMA,” said Lorraine.

“They worked very hard and worked well as a team, and were able to showcase their talents and learn new skills. They got the opportunity to serve a large

Know Your Rights number of VIP guests, from both New Zealand and overseas. Not only do they get to put this event on their CV’s, but they are also getting certificates and references for their services.”

Highlights of Coronation, which ran from August 18 – 21, included the Diplomat Luncheon which was held at Tainui College for Research and Development in Hopuhopu. It was attended by 130 guests and diplomats from Thailand, Argentina, Australia, Russia, South Africa, France, Canada, Cook Islands, Cuba, Israel, India and many other nations.

“The feedback our students received was incredibly positive. The King was very impressed with them and some of the High Hosts offered them work in Christchurch.”

The Coronation itself, which took place at the Turangawaewae Royal Marae on August 21, was a moving and powerful ceremony – and one which NZMA was very proud to be a part of.

“It was really wonderful that so many of our students were able to be involved in this memorable occasion. They were very excited from the time they arrived until the time the left, and they did an amazing job,” said Lorraine.

Josh Tyrell and James Tucker—names synonymous with “Waikato Rugby” - paid a visit to the Waikato Campus to share their stories of perseverance and hard work.

Popular personalities amongst the student body, Josh and Tyrell’s message of the importance education has, was really emphasised by their own choices to study to ensure a career after their sporting one.

Josh is currently studying towards a Bachelor in Management at Waikato University.

The Outback Inn — part of the Laurenson Group, kindly hosted Yogesh’s WKO Hospitality Level 3 students.

Here students were explained the importance of host responsibility and how The Outback Inn incorporates this within their day to day operations.

Also shared was how The Outback Inn recruit for their business — all of which the Students were really interested to know about.

We are pleased to announce the recent outcomes from the interview rounds held for the Auckland Council Cadetship programme — and we are please to announce that Business student Anselea and Contact Centre student Tumai, were both successful in securing a highly prized cadetship position.

Awesome job Ansela and Tumai.

Tumai joins the Contact Centre team as a CSR and Anselea joins Parks & Recreation as an Administrator.

We are still awaiting further news on other students put through — so watch this space!

De La Salle College hospitality students made there mark at NZMA Auckland South and Sylvia Park campuses in typical La Salle style — “MEMORABLE”!

Although keen to jump straight into the hospitality Taste Tester day created just for them by our awesome Student Services team, they were also given chances to try out other courses here at NZMA; Business, Retail and Contact Centre. At SPC, the lads also had a hand at Cookery.

Very energetic, the La Salle group was also very competitive, with an overall winner for best competitor on the day at ASC going to Tommy!

SPC had the pleasure of hosting Fonterra and the NZ Chefs Association for the launch of the newest Kapiti ice cream flavours. Needless to say, everything was absolutely delicious and the freezer is now empty... Tutor’s David Owen and Anne Lawson supported their Diploma in Hospitality classes while they served the guests. The night was enjoyed by all!

Lunar Eclipse Details If you missed the first lunar eclipse this year you’re in luck! There’s a second chance to watch the Moon disappear in the night sky.

Come along to Stardome and see a short show to learn more about eclipses and then take a look through the telescopes. Gaze up at the dark sky above Maungakiekie and watch as the Moon slowly disappears from view, high in the night sky. Because this eclipse takes place close to midnight, the Moon is near its highest point in the sky, so obstructions like trees and buildings shouldn’t interfere with the view. It’s a strange and spectacular phenomenon to watch.

Hamilton City Council Performing Arts Contestable Fund is open from 01 September - 4.30pm Wednesday 08 October 2014 . This Fund is administered by Creative Waikato and all enquiries should be directed in the first instance to hello@creativewaikato.co.nz or to 0508 427 892. $100,000 is available to be allocated in this financial year. There is no maximum level of funding.
