A word from the man in charge...
Lani from NZMA Careers recently visited Sylvia Park to talk to retailers and this is what she found...
Know Your Rights! The weekly roundPublic up... Holiday Entitlements
Top 5 attributes retail managers look for: 1)
Awesome First Impression- Go in and say Hi, be dressed tidily and relevant to the store, have a great smile as well as know something about the store.
2) Confidence- If you cannot say Hi and talk confidently and have a friendly chat with staff, then how can you with customers? 3) Time availability - Must be able to do all shifts required in the role. Remember retail shifts include late nights and weekends. 4) Great Attitude - You cannot just stand behind a counter and smile, a lot goes on behind the scenes, so be willing to work hard in all tasks providing excellent customer service at all times. 5) Reliability - You need to be someone who can be relied upon and trusted to rock up to work on time, work hard and be a great team member. The best way to get work in retail is to go into the store and chat to the Manager about what they have available. I know it is scary, but give it a try!!

NZMA Student Success Stories
Cover letters are very important and must be written for every job applied for online. If you are visiting or calling employers, then you do not need to write a cover letter as you can explain the reasons you want to work there when talking to them.
Do include:
Why you would be good at the job – your skills and qualities
Why you want to work for that company – is it their reputation, their customer service, the product or service, the friendly staff, the well-known brand?
Don’t include:
the exact same information you have in your CV
lots of sentences starting with ‘I’
Remember to:
a cover letter should only be one page
spellcheck it
use a clear easy to read font eg Calibri or Arial size 10 or 12 points
write a new cover letter for every application
try reading your finished letter out loud to make sure it makes sense
A good cover letter is important because it makes you stand out from the rest of the people applying.
