Awith word from Dealing bullying

the man in charge...

Know Your Rights! The weekly roundPublic up... Holiday Entitlements

Bullying can mean many things. It can be offensive, intimidating, malicious, humiliating or insulting behaviour. If you think you’re being bullied, keep a diary of the incidents of bullying behaviour and if it seems there is a pattern, let your employer know. It’s a good idea to follow up any discussion with a formal letter outlining what has been discussed and any proposed actions. This can provide you with valuable support if the problem continues. Just because bullying doesn’t affect you directly, doesn’t mean that it’s ok. Be ready to help your workmates and encourage them to raise the issue with their employer. A little friendly support is often all that is needed to turn a situation around. If you're not comfortable approaching your employer, talk to either your Union or the health and safety officer where you work, and see if they can support you. If you feel that discussions with your employer have failed, you can find out what you can do next by calling the Department of Labour's Contact Centre on 0800 20 90 20. This is a free service and is available to both employers and employees.

Dealing with harassment If you believe you're being harassed you need to raise it with your employer. If you are not comfortable talking to your employer alone you can bring a friend, a family member or a union member for support. If meeting with your employer does not resolve the harassment you may go to mediation. If your employer is harassing you, you may raise a personal grievance under the Employment Relations Act 2000.

A word from the man in charge...

How many of you have answered the question "tell me a little bit about yourself" with a synopsis of your resume? It wasn't until I had a mock interview with my Acting class professor that I realized how pathetically uninspired my answer might seem. Interestingly, most of the people I have interviewed answer this question in exactly the same manner. Here is how I introduced myself.

Know Your Rights! The weekly roundPublic up... Holiday Entitlements

"I am Ketaki Desai and I am originally from India. Before coming to the United States several years ago, I completed a Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering from Pune University. Because I was interested in biomechanics, I designed an artificial knee and ankle joint for my final year project and then applied for a Masters in Bioengineering at ..." At this point I was abruptly cut off by my professor. She looked at my resume and then back at me. Then she said something I will always remember. "You are not your list of degrees and achievements. If that is all I wanted to know, I would have read your resume. I want to know the person that you are, what defines your values, what makes you tick, how I can encourage you to be the best employee you can be. And I want to know all this not just because I need the right fit for my job description, but because I believe you need to feel the same way too. And for that, we need to get to know each other." She asked me a few personal questions, and based on my answers, gave me a very different version of how I could describe myself. Here is what she came up with: "I am Ketaki Desai, and I have been fortunate to live a third of my life, each, in a predominately Hindu, Muslim and Christian country. This has played a significant role in how I work with diverse teams, as well as my understanding of global cultures and customs. I love learning, which is evident from all my years of being in school, but I believe that practical application of this knowledge is key. To that effect, I participated in several competitions, including a million dollar global competition, where I could apply the theory I learned in class to real-world problems. I even won this global competition and started my own venture to bridge the gap between education and technology in American classrooms. I am very passionate about reading, and whenever I get a chance, I will pick up a book. I am currently reading The Shiva Trilogy, which is a modern day interpretation of Indian mythology." Her answer made me seem like an interesting person even to myself! An interviewer's job is to glean as much insight into the core values and beliefs of the candidate, so she can pick someone who is aligned well with the culture of the team and organization. When a person dares to step out of their comfort zone of repeating tried and tested information from their resume, not only does it show innovation and enthusiasm, but it also makes the candidate memorable. An honest, passionate answer reveals more about a person than a canned response, because the body language mimics what is being said. When interviewing by the hundreds and getting similar responses, it is the interesting answers that stick. Does your introduction really highlight the real you? How would you modify your "tell me about yourself" answer to make it more interesting and memorable? Here is how you can test it: the next time you are at a party introduce yourself differently, and go back to someone you just met after a few hours. Did that person remember at least a part of your conversation?

Know Your Rights

On Friday 2 May, I was invited along to a site visit with the Hospo Level 4 students and their awesome tutor Hiren to Vilagrad Winery (110 year old family wine business). I find these trips both interesting and very rewarding. The students were very engaged and were able to answer plenty of questions asked by the gentleman presenting the tour, Adam Nooyen (Son of the current owners), the students also taught him something about their study unit that he did not know. The students were proud to share their knowledge and this just shows the wonderful work our tutors are doing in making sure that the students are well equipped with the knowledge of their chosen subject. Another proud moment is that Adam, said not once but four times how awesome our students looked in their uniform and that they were the best looking bunch of students that he had ever presented to. This visit was just testament to the hard work and dedication our tutors put into their work and a reflection of the values and personal presentation that NZMA is trying to teach our students EVERYDAY!!

Thanks to Lorraine from NZMA WKO for the details

Dress for Success

Know Your Rights

On Friday 9 May, we had two lovely ladies (Dayna Biggs and Ciane Lawrey) from DFS here to present to our students the importance of personal presentation when going for a job interview. They gave our students tips and ideas on hair, dress and make-up (for both ladies and gentleman). Two of our students were lucky enough to be picked and demonstrated on how a few small things make a huge difference in their appearance. Thanks to Lorraine at NZMA WKO for the details
