Rest and meal breaks All employers are required to provide employees with paid rest breaks and unpaid meal breaks. These provisions come into force as a result of the Employment Relations (Breaks, Infant Feeding, and Other Matters) Amendment Act 2008. The Amendment aims to improve health and safety in workplaces and increase productivity by establishing a minimal standard across all industries.
What you’re entitled to Employees will be entitled to the following paid rest breaks and unpaid meal breaks:
one paid 10-minute rest break if their work period is between two and four hours;
one paid 10-minute rest break and one unpaid 30-minute meal break if their work period is between four and six hours;
two paid 10-minute rest breaks and one unpaid 30-minute meal break if their work period is between six and eight hours. If more than an eight hour period is worked, these requirements automatically extend to cover the additional hours on the same basis.
For more information see http://www.dol.govt.nz

Know Your Rights Students volunteer for Hospice West Auckland Timing of rest and meal breaks The timing of rest and meal breaks is flexible and can follow any arrangement agreed between employer and employee. If an agreement can’t be reached, the rest and meal breaks should be spread evenly throughout the work period, where reasonable and practicable.
Additional rest and meal breaks The Amendment’s provisions establish minimal standards that apply across all industries. Employers and employees are free to agree to additional entitlements to rest and meal breaks — either paid or unpaid. The provisions do not affect existing agreements that provide for additional paid or unpaid rest breaks and meal breaks.
Compliance Employers may be liable to a penalty imposed by the Employment Relations Authority if they do not comply with minimal standards for paid rest breaks and unpaid meal breaks. The Authority will also have the power to order employers to comply with their obligations.

Sylvia Park was a hive of activity as they held their Open Day on Friday 21st March. The day begun with the arrival of “The Edge Roadrunners” who were on hand to get everyone geared up for the event. Apart from the face painting, sausage sizzle and balloon activities the guests on the day were treated to all the highlights of the Sylvia Park Campus. Tours were provided to showcase the facilities including the kitchens, bar and barista rooms in action. It was a great day for everyone involved and resulted in several new student enrolments on the day!
Our current students were involved in activities such as the Cookery Competition and creating the ‘mocktails’ in the bar or iced coffees in the barista room. There was also the Snap Chat Challenge which put everyone’s skills to the test, overall resulting in an amazing day!
A big well done and a huge thank you to all the effort and dedication from everyone involved to make the day a success!!

Know Your Rights Cookery students from NZMA had their skills put to thefor test Hospice at the weekend whenAuckland they assisted Students volunteer West with Coke’s ‘Social Club’ event which was held at Rainbows End theme park. The students were there to help cater the event preparing food and drinks to be served to the Coke team. Feedback from the day was really positive and it was commented that the students who ran the BBQ were amazing. The team from Coke all commented how they enjoyed all the food and loved the potato salad. The students from NZMA catered for 500 people (1000 Sausages, 500 Steaks) and were also in charge of making 60kg of potato salad which was amazing and everyone loved it. So a huge thank you must go out the Cookery Tutor Jonathon and his students Shinji Iseki, Dongyun Kang, Ziyue Ouyang & Geraldine Warwood who all proved they were working together as an amazing team, professional and competent especially under pressure when surrounded by hungry guests!! Finally a big thank you must also go to Roger for his Magic Potato salad.
WELL DONE to everyone involved!!!

NZMA students were lucky enough to attend this year’s Polyfest in Auckland. The annual event, now the largest Polynesian Festival in the world, began at Hillary College, Otara in 1976. The festival’s purpose is to demonstrate the students pride in their cultural identity and heritage and bring schools and the different cultures between them together.
The event was a huge success and enabled our students to experience all the activities and features which were on offer.

Know Your RightsGood George in Hamilton came to life after a of friends got together and decided Students volunteerbunch for Hospice West Auckland after years in hospitality and brewing it was time to create their own craft beer brand. Their main motivation was they wanted to show people what great beer can be, convert drinkers from the norm and show them how to enjoy fantastic beer. Students from our Waikato campus were lucky enough to spend the day experiencing all aspects of the brewing process in one of Hamilton’s iconic microbrewery Good George. They were exposed to all elements of the brewing process and evaluating different types of beers all under the expert advice and knowledge of the home brewer from Good George. Students were also able to experience first-hand the beer cellars and the raw ingredients used to make great tasting beer. Overall the trip took around 2 hours with the complete beer brewing process explained from the storage stage through to the beer tasting and the students were able to note down different styles and tastes. Students were introduced to samples of hops & different malt types so that they could analyse how they felt, tasted and what they looked like. This was an invaluable experience for the students, demonstrating a practical working environment! A big thanks to everyone involved.

NZMA Student Success When it comes to knowing what employers want,Stories no one is savvier than Phil O’Reilly. Mr O’Reilly is the Chief Executive of BusinessNZ, the country’s largest business advocacy group. A member of several private and public advisory boards, he also chairs the Board of the Business and Industry Advisory Committee to the OECD and he’s New Zealand’s employer delegate to the International Labour Conference. Mr O’Reilly understands exactly what employers need – not just Down Under, but also around the globe. So it wasn’t surprising that when he visited NZMA Sylvia Park last week 170 students packed out Café Fusion, all hoping to glean some expert career advice. They weren’t disappointed. According to Mr O’Reilly, although education is extremely valuable, what employers are really after are skills. “Employers want the very thing you are learning to do at NZMA,” he said. “They want qualifications that are directly relevant to their workplace. And from what I have seen here today, you guys are getting it right.” Mr O’Reilly explained that skills required were a combination of workplace skills, job skills and soft skills. Workplace skills include being work-ready, on time, well-presented, able to follow instructions and work in a team, but also show initiative. “In the first days of employment, these are the skills that employers are looking for. They want people who can work intelligently - so turn your brain on when you go to work. Don’t just act like a robot. You need to be capable of adding something to the team.”

NZMA Student Success Stories Job skills are the technical skills required for a specific role, while soft skills include manners, showing respect, being nice to customers, being ethical, motivated and trustworthy. “Soft skills are becoming increasingly important all over the world. They are massively powerful. The people that you see getting ahead are the people that I see using these kinds of skills. “If you have the technical skills and the soft skills, it’s really going to set you up for a great future.” Mr O’Reilly described the workplace as a living thing which was constantly changing, just like the people who were a part of it. “Businesses and people both have to thrive on change. The level of competition in New Zealand and overseas is so intense that businesses die if they’re not prepared to change. Similarly most people will change careers many times in their lifetime. The more you can build skills, of the sort you are learning here, the better your capacity will be to successfully make change. You need to think of what you are doing here as another step. Some of the skills you gain today will be out of date in five years. You need to keep building on them, throughout your life.” Mr O’Reilly said the students had made a wise decision to study at NZMA and gain practical skills. “What you are learning here won’t just help you in your job, it will also help you be a better citizen. And that’s what employers want.”
