A word from the man in charge...
Know Your Rights! The roundPublic up... Holiday Entitlements How do I quitweekly my job? If you want to leave your job, you have to tell your employer in advance of when you want to leave. This is called giving notice. Most employment agreements have a clause telling you how much notice you have to give – this can range from a day or two to a month or longer. Some employment agreements do not have such a clause, but this does not mean that you can just walk out or not turn up. This is because you still have to give “reasonable” notice to your employer. If you do not turn up to work and don’t give notice, then depending on what your employment agreement says your employer may be able to withhold or make penalty deductions from your final pay. So check your employment agreement to be clear about what it says about leaving your employment.
Can my employer fire me? Yes – your employer can fire you. Some employment agreements have formal processes for how a dismissal or disciplinary action should take place. Some employment agreements tell you when you can or can’t be dismissed, or what you can be instantly dismissed for. All individual employment agreements must contain a clear explanation of the processes for solving employment relationship problems, i.e. an explanation of processes to follow and services available for resolving employment relationship problems.

Know Your Rights
How many warnings does my employer have to give Students volunteer for Hospice West Auckland me before firing me? Your employment agreement may set out the disciplinary procedures in place at your workplace. There are no “standard number of warnings which should be given prior to dismissal, or whether they should be verbal or written. If you do not have an employment agreement, or there is nothing in the agreement about a disciplinary procedure, this does not mean your employer can fire you without warning (unless you are on a 90 day trial. The Employment Relations Act 2000 says that there are at least four things an employer should do when taking any action against an employee.
Does my employer have to give me a reference when I leave? Many employers provide a reference or a certificate outlining the employee's length of service with their employer when an employee leaves their job, even though there is no legal requirement for an employer to provide a reference. Some employers choose to provide a more detailed reference. If your employer does decide to provide a reference, he/she must take reasonable care to make sure that the reference is a true and accurate reflection about you as an employee. If you have been employed on a starting-out wage rate, you should also get from your employer a statement of how long you have worked, so that a new employer knows what wage rate to pay you or how long you still need to work before you can get (at least) the adult minimum wage.

Know Your Rights As you know, the most common process an employer determines who is a suitable candidate is through a Face to Face Interview. However, these days, many employers are adding on further checks to help them find the right person. Below are 10x further recruitment processes that employers can use‌ Where your credit rating is checked. Especially if you are dealing with money/payments eg: Banks Questionnaire that you answer that analyses your personality, aptitude & reasoning. Actions speak louder and so they check your skills with further tests eg: Typing test, wine test Testing done to see if you have any drugs in your system that can impact you or others in workplace. This checks any criminal record you may have that is not covered by Clean Slate. You may need to go in for a day so they can see how you work & your skills. A special day they call you in to do a variety of tasks to assess you in person eg: group interviews, role plays & tests Mainly with call centres to check how you communicate & problem solve. Long Answer Questions you need to answer in written form to explain what you know and how. Where the employer/recruiter may be out of town & you need to be interviewed online.
Just remember that employers are not trying to make things harder. They just need to make sure they hire the most suitable applicant for the role because once they employ that person; they will be investing their money & trust into them to do the task they are required to do. Hiring the wrong person could result in a very expensive mistake.
If you need any further info or help to prepare for any of the processes above, then see your NZMA Careers team who will only be happy to help you out.

Auckland South students and their tutor Dilbagh Singh put their skills to the test as they hosted a formal sit down lunch at the campus. They treated waiting customers to a formal dinner at fully dressed tables, a set menu and table service. Guests dined in the roped off sections to enjoy privacy and to indulge in the sumptuous food on offer. The event was a huge success and enabled the students to put their learning into practice in a realistic environment similar to working in industry. The photos from the day are up on our NZMA Facebook page with a few examples overleaf. Looks like a great time was had by all, well done to the students involved and Dilbagh for organising the event!!!!

Know Your Rights Students volunteer for Hospice Auckland NZMA Sylvia West Park students piled on the bus and headed south with their tutor Eddie Trubshoe to get to grips with the art of wine making with the help of Villa Maria. The Auckland based winery was host to our students as they took a tour and delved into the process of what it takes to make a quality bottle or two! The students were treated to a full tour of the winery and it’s facilities and got to see the full production process from grape to glass. The students also learnt about the different grape varieties, their tastes and which ones go together to make individual types of wine. Villa Maria is one of New Zealand's premier wine producers and is also one of NZMA’s employment partners, providing casual opportunities for our students. As you can see from the photos, the students definitely seemed to enjoy their experience at Villa Maria and all the information which was on offer. Through seeing wine production in a ‘real life’ commercial environment our students can now translate this to their teaching and develop their learning. A big thank you to all at Villa Maria, NZMA Eddie for organising the event and to his class, especially Vandhana ‘Bunty’ Sharma for the pics!

Know Your Rights NZMA Sylvia Park took the classroom to the Students volunteer forstudents Hospice West Auckland outdoors with the help of their tutor Moana Ese. In order to learn about beer and wine the students visited Garrisons Public House based over at Sylvia Park where they could taste various types of beer, learn about the different flavours and see how the set up works in a fully functioning public house. The students were then able to transfer this experience and relate it to what they are learning in the classroom. Overall it was a great experience for the students and a big thank you to Garrisons for their assistance. Brothers Brewery an Auckland micro-brewery also played host to our students to show them how beer is made and the whole process from hop to glass. Students were treated to a demonstration of the beer production process and also were guided step by step by Brothers Master Brewer. This was a great opportunity for the students to relate commercial production to their day to day studies thanks to the staff of Brothers.

NZMA Student Success Stories
Let me count the ways: arriving late, crazy hygiene (I’ve seen it) and being rude, just to name a few. Yet, among all the ways an interview can go sideways, I’ve found there are five fatal blunders that stand out -- and that are fairly common. A lot of mistakes in a job interview can be dismissed or counter-balanced by positives if a company feels you really are the right candidate for the job. But here are five red flags that most great hiring managers will not miss and will have a hard time getting past.
1. . I’m always looking for team players who can work well with others, even in trying circumstances. Criticizing colleagues, a boss or an employer, is a very bad sign.
Obviously, most workplaces are not perfect, so if you feel the need to talk about issues and challenges at your former employer, you must do so in a respectful way -- not a rant. Tell a story that lays out a challenging situation but, more importantly, focuses on what skills or insights you gained through that experience. I want employees who, when confronted with tough situations, found the positives and grew. Nobody wants to hire a grouser.
March 2014
NZMA Student Success Stories 2. Don’t be afraid to articulate clear strengths, bolstered by examples of goals achieved or issues resolved. You should go into an interview armed with at least a handful of strengths, each supported by a couple of concrete examples. If you can’t convey your strengths in a compelling way, you’re in trouble. At the same time, you need to be able to talk about areas where you hope to develop. Rarely do we find a candidate who is the whole package, so I want candidates to be genuine when they articulate weaknesses. Even top CEOs are not rock stars at everything. The best recognize their shortcomings and hire rock stars to fill those gaps.
3. what can we expect on a typical Tuesday in the role? With access today to company websites and Facebook pages, LinkedIn, news searches, sites like Glassdoor.com and other sources, there is no excuse to walk into an interview ignorant. I expect candidates to understand the business, have read recent news releases on the company, and know a bit about the leadership team. Bonus points to those candidates who find someone connected to the company and can ask a question or two based on those “insider” insights.
If you don’t know someone at a company, use LinkedIn to try to connect with an employee, former employee or someone who has done business with the company. You’ll gain invaluable intelligence. Using the theory that we are all just six connections removed from any person -- and, in this case, any company -- you should make the effort to talk to someone with direct knowledge of the company before you step into an interview.

4.
NZMA Student Success Stories
I also want team members that are passionate about what we’re doing -- and excited to learn more. You should go into every interview with a minimum of five questions for the interviewer. Even if you know the answers, you should be hungry to hear your hiring manager or future co-workers respond to those questions. These should be serious and insightful questions. Too often I spot candidates who ask token questions because they know they are expected to. They show little interest in delving into how the business is run, what’s the competitive landscape and what’s the work environment and culture like. If you don’t ask questions that suggests to me you don’t care about the people you are going to be spending 8 to 12 hours a day with. Not a good start to a long-term relationship.
5. Was it all ‘me’ that accomplished the great outcomes? Or was it the team from product development, marketing and ‘me’? Even if you led the effort, don’t forget execution is as important as your strategic planning. We work in an age of collaboration. I want to hire smart people who have accomplished goals elsewhere and can articulate how their contribution worked as part of a larger effort. Do they have a holistic understanding of the way things get done in a business and appreciate that each of us is just a piece of a bigger enterprise? What you may notice about my five deadly red flags is that they go deeper into a candidate’s personality and his or her approach to interacting with others and with an organization. Committing these blunders will almost assuredly mean the end of your prospects with the company. Taken from Entrepreneur Entrepreneur – Sat, Mar 15, 2014 2:00 AM NZDT.
