Know Your Rights STAIRCASE what does it mean??? You’ve probably hear different people at NZMA use the term staircase, this means when a student moves from one level of study to another, for example if you start on level 3 then progress on to level 4 you will have

STAIRCASED to level 4.

WHY should you Staircase? Staircasing offers you a chance to get the most out of your learning and build a better bank of skills and experience before you enter employment. It is also a proven fact that if you staircase and go on to higher study you are more likely to secure a better job role which (hopefully) means more opportunities, more progression and most of all more money!!!

March 2014

Know Your Rights

Staircasing

is a helpful tool to

enable you to get the most out of your time with NZMA and also help you work towards reaching your full potential.

It is a proven fact that undertaking further study will aid you in the long term when you are looking for jobs and trying to progress in your career.

Having better qualifications generally means you can eventually secure a more senior role which in turn should mean you can earn more money. SO, if the aim is the ‘good life’ with the nice car, the nice home and the swanky clothes, then the aim should also be to work hard, put the effort in at course and progress in your studies. Hopefully then your goals will be within reach!!!

Know Your Rights When?? - from April 1st 2014 How Much?? - 50c per hour so $13.75 to $14.25 an hour Is it for everyone?? - Yes, anyone who is on the minimum wage will see an increase from $13.75 to $14.25 per hour

Why?? - It is an agreed initiative from the Government to try to help those

people who earn only the minimum wage. It also makes roles more attractive to potential employees as they know they can earn more. Labour Minister Simon Bridges said the starting-out and training minimum wages would also increase, from $11 an hour to $11.40 an hour, which is 80 per cent of the adult minimum wage. "Setting these wage rates represents a careful balance between protecting low-paid workers and ensuring jobs are not lost," Bridges said. "The increase announced today balances the needs of both businesses and workers and will have minimal impact on the wider labour market and inflationary pressures.

Know Your Rights Retail Therapy celebrates Valentines Students volunteer for Hospice West On Valentine’s Day, February 14th, Auckland South Campus Retail Level 4 Auckland students (lead by their Tutor Kelly Potter), decided to combine fun with class work, and transformed the Retail shop (named Retail Therapy) into Valentines Mecca. Kelly Potter stated, “Every 10 weeks, the Level 4 Retail students have to run a promotion”, which the students definitely delivered on. For the Retail Level 4 students, the activity was a big success, with everything being sold. This was also highlighted by the positive feedback by the student body and staff at the physical look of the store and the goods available, with one student commenting, “It was convenient not having to shop elsewhere for their Valentines gifts”. From this exercise the Retail Level 4 students learnt how to source and cost promotional materials, the management of promotional materials and the marketing of a specific promotion. Upcoming promotional themes, which we are all certain, will be as equally successful, are Easter followed by Mother’s Day. Great work to all those involved! Story by Jay, Lani & Kelly

NZMA Student Success The team at NZMA in the Waikato recentlyStories held an Industry Advisory Group event which is where they invite local employers to visit NZMA and discuss a specific course. The purpose is to make sure what we are teaching and what you learn as students is up to date and reflects what the industry wants from its retail staff. The group focused on Retail and here’s a few examples of what the employers had to say…. Apart from the obvious soft skills such as personality, attitude, multitasking ability, time management etc. there appeared to be other interesting themes:

* being totally technically savvy including strong “point of sale” confidence * able to absorb and retain information easily to be able to use initiative * Excellent engagement on approaching and building up rapport with customers on the floor with the view of “going the extra mile” * Intention to succeed to do better every day * Have a real passion for a long term Career in Retail * There is real opportunity for advancement in this choice of career

It was very apparent that the soft skills are more desirable for an individual to possess as opposed to a hard skill where the retailers believe they can be taught.

VILAGRAD WINERY TRIP BUILDS KNOWLEDGE

A recent day trip to Hamilton’s award-winning Vilagrad Winery proved a great way to develop students’ knowledge of wine. The Level 4 hospitality students from NZMA Waikato are currently studying viticulture, wine making and the wine evaluation process. The site visit enabled them to see first-hand the processes that are carried out at vineyards and wineries. Tutor Hiren Sheth said for many of the students it was the first time they’d set foot in a winery.

“The awesome team at Vilagrad went out of their way to show our students everything from grape culture to all the different types of wines and even how to read wine labels. They also got to check out the oak casks and were taught about the impact storage has on wine aging and flavours.” Hiren said off-site visits help motivate students, giving them valuable exposure to the types of career paths their studies could lead to. “It was a really inspirational trip, opening students’ eyes to jobs such as sommelier, maître de, wine taster and even wine maker!” Student Mavis Tahi said the visit was an ideal way to put her NZMA learning into context. “What we’re studying in class makes more sense now,” she said. The trip also provided a chance for the Vilagrad team to meet some potential future employees and fellow-wine lovers. Hiren said they were especially impressed with the way the NZMA students presented themselves, and the great questions they asked. Next up, these students will be learning about beer brewing and evaluation, and are currently planning a trip to Hamilton’s Good George Brewery.
