Welcome to our latest edition of Career Talk, inside you’ll find how to use our brand new NZMA website to search for jobs and also a full overview of the NZMA Careers Team across each of our campuses.

We’ve also included employer profiles for you to check out potential employers, information on what you can expect to get paid from your first job and all the regular content such as the current vacancies.

Know Yourhas Rights The NZMA website a new section dedicated to helping you find a job.

As you can see on the opposite page for NZMAHospice Careers now has a step Auckland by step guide to Students volunteer West creating your CV and how to apply for our current vacancies online.

Step 1 - Log on to the new NZMA website and click on the Careers section (in the top right hand corner of the screen)

Step 2- Click on the Job Seeker option, this will bring you to the page which looks the same as the one opposite

Step 3 - Search for a job! Simply click on the job search options for the type of role you are looking for, then pick a location and then hit the search button! This will bring up all the current vacancies under your search criteria.

Top tip- To view all the current vacancies simply click “all categories” and then “all locations” this will bring up all of the current vacancies. Alternatively you can download a copy of Career Talk off the website or grab one from your campus reception.

You will meet your Employment Advisor right at the beginning of your studies. They will host two workshops – the CV Workshop and the Interview Skills Workshop. They will show you how to use our NZMA CV builder and how to apply for jobs listed on the NZMA webpage. Many students want to gain first or more work experience right after starting their studies, so the Employment Advisors make sure you have a great CV and can respond well to the most common questions asked in job interviews. After you have completed the workshops you will be eligible to meet for a one-on-one meeting with your Employment Advisor to discuss your short and long term career plans and find work. The Employment Advisors help students to find work experience opportunities, casual jobs and part time work.

NZMA CAREERS TEAM - CAREERS ADVISORS

You can meet with a Careers Advisor once you have been referred by an Employment Advisor or when you are doing the last block of your studies.

Careers Advisors will do their best to help you find full time sustainable work and graduate jobs in line with your career goals at the end of your studies.

What else do they do?

Industry Advisory Group meetings – We regularly meet with employers to find out what’s new in the industry and which skills they would like to see in students and graduates working for them. This helps NZMA to tailor their courses to the needs of the market and ensures that what NZMA teaches you is really relevant to what employers look for.

Career Transition Workshop – Once you are about to finish your studies your Careers Advisors will invite you to this workshop that will give you hints and tips on how to be successful and make your way through the jungle of the job market.

Graduate events – Twice a year we want to meet with former NZMA students to socialise and hear about their professional experiences. This is a fun event that will allow graduates to reconnect with their former tutors and have a chat.

Know Your Minimum pay/wage

Rights

Employees aged 16 years and over must be paid at least the adult minimum wage rate, unless they are starting-out workers or trainees.

All employees who are involved in training or supervising other employees must be paid at least the adult minimum wage rate.

Starting-out workers must be paid at least the minimum starting-out wage rate. Employers and starting-out workers may agree to any wage rate as long as it is not less than the starting-out wage rate.

 Starting-out workers are: 

16- and 17-year-old employees who have not yet completed six months of continuous employment with their current employer.



18- and 19-year-old employees who have been paid a specified social security benefit for six months or more, and who have not yet completed six months continuous employment with any employer since they started being paid a benefit. Once they have completed six months continuous employment with a single employer, they will no longer be starting-out workers and must be paid the adult minimum wage rate.



16- to 19-year-old employees who are required by their employment agreement to undertake industry training for at least 40 credits a year in order to become qualified for the occupation to which their employment agreement relates.

Know Your Minimum pay/wage 

Rights

Trainees are employees aged 20 years or over who are required by their employment agreement to undertake at least 60 credits a year in an industry training programme in order to become qualified for the occupation to which their employment agreement relates.

Minimum wage rates must be paid to all employees whether full-time, part-time fixed-term, casual employees, working from home and people paid totally or partly by commission or piece rates.

Employers and employees may agree to any wage rate as long as it is not less than the applicable minimum wage rate. Starting-out workers must be paid at least the minimum starting-out wage rate, and trainees over 20 years of age must be paid at least the training minimum wage rate.

There is no minimum wage for employees aged under 16 but all other employment rights and entitlements still apply. When looking at whether an employee who is 16 years or older is a starting-out worker, any time spent employed by an employer before the employee turned 16 must be included when calculating the time that employee has been continuously employed.

Know Your Rights Students volunteer for Hospice West Auckland

We had the opportunity this morning to sit in on the presentation from Lifeline to our Contact Centre Block 4 Level 3 students who recently completed their outbound campaign for Lifeline.

Lifeline were very impressed with our students and Joanna Johnson from Lifeline came in to present certificates to all the students who took successfully worked on this campaign.

Lifeline were so pleased with the work and the outcomes from this campaign which included renewed updates of their archived memberships as well as incoming cheques of donations that Joanna mentioned she is very happy to be a reference for further organisations who may consider NZMA Call centre students for their non-profit campaigns.

She also paid special mention to three students who did particularly well: -

NZMA Student Success Stories

Montana Catering is a dynamic, forward thinking catering company based in the Waikato.

It handles functions and events for all types of clients from private parties to huge sports events. Clients of Montana include Waikato Stadium, Seddon Park Cricket Ground and one off occasions such as Hamilton 400 V8 Supercars and the Rhythm and Vines Festival in Gisborne.

NZMA are proud to say they too work alongside Montana Catering and have provided casual hospitality staff to help service high profile events. Our students have worked in a variety of hospitality and cookery positions, with some students even securing a full time permanent positions.

NZMA Student Success Stories

NZMA are lucky enough to be a main provider of staff for casual opportunities through Vital Hospitality. Vital Hospitality is an Auckland basis staffing provider working within the field of hospitality across all sorts of different events, ranging from private functions to large corporate occasions.

Vital Hospitality has worked with NZMA to provide casual employment opportunities for our students from Level 3 upwards. Working for Vital offers students the chance to gain real life work experience and develop their skills in a professional corporate environment.

Finance Matters - Get Sussed for 2014!!

The Stamford Plaza is one of Auckland’s premier places to stay. Located in the city’s CBD the Stamford caters for all genres of guests and employs huge ranges of staff across its various facilities. NZMA are proud to say that they have worked alongside the Stamford Plaza and have provided staff across all levels from Food & Beverage Attendant to Reception/FOH. Well, the CV & Cover Letter Workshops are where you will create your own CV and also a Cover Letter. These are vital tools for your career development and will help you with the employment skills section of your course.

The Interview Skills Workshop is a chance for you to polish your interview skills! You’ll take part in a ‘mock interview’ so will experience what it might be like to have an interview and be faced with some of the types of questions you may get asked. Again this is to help you for your future career progression.

Supervisor Both the sessions are about having fun and helping you create tools which you can use in the future to help you secure work experience or take with you on to further study!
