ABOUT GARDOPIA GARDENS Gardopia Gardens is a 501(c)3 nonprofit agency based in the Near Eastside of San Antonio. The mission of Gardopia Gardens is to grow healthy communities through garden-based learning. We envision a sustainable society, empowered, and educated to lead healthy lifestyles through gardening.

Gardopia Gardens has proudly serviced the community for 9 years, promoting health and environmental stewardship by implementing garden-based learning programming in schools, businesses, and community organizations – offering tools, materials, and best practices to ensure their gardens’ sustainability.

The 2023–2024 year has been truly transformative. Our partnerships with schools have deepened, allowing us to expand garden-based learning opportunities that equip students with hands-on experiences in sustainability, nutrition, and environmental stewardship.

These programs are not just lessons—they are life-changing experiences that connect young minds to the natural world and to healthier futures.

Our community classes have also blossomed, becoming vibrant spaces where people of all ages come together to cultivate skills, relationships, and a shared love for gardening. These gatherings have strengthened community bonds and sparked meaningful conversations around wellness and sustainability.

Community Farm Young Women’s Leadership Academy Primary

GARDEN-BASED LEARNING The Garden-Based Learning Program is an evidence-based practice that empowers youth to grow their own food while implementing Science, Technology, Research, Engineering, Art, and Mathemetics (STREAM) academic activities. Topics range from soil science, entomology, composting, sustainability, botany, tool safety, intercropping, and waste reduction. The Garden-Based Learning Program curriculum strongly emphasizes reducing childhood obesity/malnutrition and environmental stewardship.

GARDEN- VOLUNTEER Gardopia Gardens hosts multiple volunteer days weekly, fostering a sense of community wellness through organic urban agriculture. Community members are welcome to engage in an annual series of educational workshops led by local experts. GARDEN-BASED LEARNING PROGRAM The Garden-Based Learning Program has transformed how students engage with health, science, and the environment. Through hands-on gardening, students build confidence in their ability to grow nutritious food, leading to measurable increases in nutrition literacy and healthier eating habits. Schools participating in the program report higher student engagement in STEM subjects, improved attendance, and stronger collaboration among peers.

Beyond the classroom, families gain greater access to fresh produce, while school gardens reduce waste through composting and recycling initiatives. GARDEN VOLUNTEER Gardopia Gardens’ Volunteer Program strengthens community resilience by turning collective action into measurable change. Each week, volunteers contribute hundreds of hours toward growing organic food, restoring green spaces, and supporting neighborhood wellness. These experiences foster leadership, teamwork, and a deeper connection to the environment—helping participants translate new skills into home and school gardens across the city.

Many volunteers report healthier eating habits, stronger community ties, and a renewed sense of purpose through service. Beyond growing plants, the program grows people, empowering residents to take ownership of their food system and build a more sustainable, self-sufficient San Antonio.

FARMERS MARKET The Farmers Market Program is an educational outreach initiative at the North New Braunfels Micro-Farm and The Pearl. On a monthly and seasonal basis, the markets serve as a community resource for exchanging horticultural information, including seasonal vegetation, organic gardening practices, youth activities, consultations, and garden builds & designs.

2023 Garden Awards Gala Growing Community, Celebrating Impact The 2023 Garden Awards Gala brought together educators, students, families, and community partners for an unforgettable evening at the Witte Museum’s Mays Family Center. The event celebrated a year of growth, community resilience, and the shared commitment to cultivating healthier futures through garden-based education.

Throughout the evening, Gardopia Gardens honored the individuals and organizations who help bring gardens to life across San Antonio —garden stewards, youth mentors, educators, volunteers, and partners working side by side to turn outdoor spaces into hubs for wellness, learning, and sustainability.

With over 70 school and community gardens now thriving across the city, the Gala highlighted stories of transformation that reflect the organization’s deep-rooted mission: to grow healthy communities from the ground up.

Guests enjoyed an inspiring program featuring awards presentations, music, local food, and community storytelling. The energy in the room was a testament to the power of collective action and the belief that gardens can be a powerful tool for education, health, and environmental change.

The 2023 Garden Awards Gala served as both a celebration of what’s been accomplished and a call to keep growing—together.

H-E-B, Victor Wembanyama, and Gardopia Gardens Unite for Earth Day During Earth Month 2024, H-E-B celebrated its statewide commitment to sustainability through tree plantings, community cleanups, and educational initiatives across Texas. In San Antonio, H-E-B teamed up with Victor Wembanyama of the San Antonio Spurs to surprise students from Bowden Academy, joining them in planting fruit trees, vegetable gardens, and hosting an outdoor storytime centered on environmental stewardship and healthy living.

As part of this Earth Day initiative, H-E-B awarded $5,000 each to Gardopia Gardens and the Ella Austin Community Center to strengthen their community-based programs that promote food access, health equity, and environmental education. This investment helped expand Gardopia Gardens’ outreach to local schools, enhance its urban agriculture curriculum, and distribute fresh produce to families in need.

The partnership highlights how teamwork between community organizations, corporate partners, and public figures can inspire environmental action citywide.

Gardopia Gardens achieved a major milestone in strengthening its operational capacity with the purchase of a tractor made possible through the generous support of the public and the Whole Cities Foundation.

This vital equipment has transformed the way we prepare and maintain gardens throughout San Antonio. The tractor allows our team to efficiently move soil, build raised beds, trench irrigation lines, and manage large-scale projects that were once labor-intensive.

By increasing our efficiency, we have been able to expand our reach to more educational and community garden sites, ensuring that more students and families have access to high-quality, productive garden spaces. Beyond logistics, the tractor has become a powerful educational tool.

Students now learn how machinery and sustainable agriculture intersect—gaining hands-on experience in land preparation, composting, and soil health management.

District-Wide Initiative Expands Garden-Based Learning Across San Antonio ISD

Gardopia Gardens partnered with the Mays Family Foundation, Big Green, and the San Antonio ISD Foundation, launched a year-long effort to expand GardenBased Learning across more than 50 schools in the San Antonio Independent School District.

This initiative is transforming how students engage with science, health, and sustainability by turning school gardens into living classrooms that inspire curiosity, teamwork, and environmental responsibility.

The project kicked off with a district-wide professional development session at Madison Elementary School, where educators gathered to learn hands-on garden skills, explore TEKS-aligned lesson plans, and connect classroom learning to outdoor environments. Teachers were trained in topics such as soil health, seasonal planting, composting, and nutrition education, gaining the tools needed to implement successful garden programs at their campuses. Through this collaboration, schools received raised garden beds, soil, compost, seedlings, and irrigation systems, along with curriculum integration and technical support.

Chief Executive Officer Stephen Lucke, Chief Operating Officer Dominic Dominguez, and Chief Learning Officer Sherry Lim bring decades of combined experience in environmental science, nonprofit management, and education innovation. With clarity of purpose and strategic foresight, they cultivate a future where every garden becomes a tool for learning, wellness, and community resilience.

Supporting this vision is Gardopia’s Board of Directors, a diverse group of educators, entrepreneurs, public health leaders, and community advocates. Their guidance ensures the organization remains rooted in equity, driven by impact, and aligned with the needs of the communities it serves.

GARDOPIA GARDENS MAKES NATIONAL APPEARANCE ON THE TODAY SHOW FOR EARTH DAY In celebration of Earth Day, Gardopia Gardens took center stage on NBC’s TODAY Show, bringing garden-based education and sustainability to a national audience. CEO Stephen Lucke joined hosts Hoda Kotb, Al Roker, and special guest Kimbal Musk outside the TODAY plaza to demonstrate how easy and impactful it is to grow your own food—even from kitchen scraps.

With vibrant vegetables on display and a colorful garden-themed backdrop, Lucke highlighted simple steps viewers can take to start gardening at home, such as regrowing lettuce and celery from kitchen trimmings.

The segment not only showcased sustainable practices but also emphasized Gardopia’s mission: to improve community health, environmental stewardship, and youth education through gardening. Kimbal Musk echoed the importance of reconnecting with food and empowering communities to grow locally. The energy on set reflected a shared vision of a more sustainable, self-reliant future.

As the TODAY Show celebrated green living, Gardopia Gardens planted the seeds of change— reminding viewers that healthy communities begin with healthy soil. Their appearance marked a milestone in bringing San Antonio’s urban agriculture movement to the national spotlight.

As Gardopia Gardens’ national partner, Big Green joined forces with our team to make this year’s Earth Day Farmers Market an unforgettable celebration of community, sustainability, and growth.

Our efforts empowered families to take action for a healthier planet by distributing free garden kits and tree adoptions, helping residents begin their own journey toward food security and environmental stewardship.

The event connected local farmers, educators, and neighbors through hands-on demonstrations in composting, water conservation, and healthy cooking. Children and families learned how small changes, such as planting a seed or nurturing a tree, can have lasting impacts on their health and community.

Wellness Garden at Northside ISD

NORTHSIDE ISD WELLNESS GARDEN In partnership with North East Independent School District (NEISD), Gardopia Gardens helped design and install a new Wellness Garden to promote health, mindfulness, and connection with nature. The space features raised garden beds, native plants, and shaded gathering areas that create an inviting environment for relaxation, reflection, and hands-on learning.

This project reflects Gardopia Gardens’ ongoing commitment to fostering well-being through green spaces that nurture both people and the planet.

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP TAKES FLIGHT AT GARDOPIA GARDENS - NEST’ED CHICKEN COOP The construction of Gardopia Gardens’ new chicken coop, made possible through the generous support of Turner Construction and the Texas Food and Wine Alliance, represents a powerful investment in sustainable education and local food systems. This addition enhances hands-on learning opportunities for youth and adults alike, teaching lessons in animal care, composting, food cycles, and environmental stewardship.

The coop not only supports egg production for community programs but also strengthens understanding of circular agriculture—how waste becomes resource and care becomes community. Thanks to these partners, the project has deepened Gardopia’s capacity to model self-sufficiency, sustainability, and collaboration in building a healthier, more resilient San Antonio.

Gardopia Gardens Launches $2.5 Million Capital Campaign to Grow Its Forever Home

Gardopia Gardens has officially launched a $2.5 million capital campaign to purchase and develop its longterm headquarters, a historic milestone for the organization after nearly a decade of serving San Antonio’s communities without owning its land. This bold step marks the beginning of Gardopia’s next chapter: transforming its Eastside site into a permanent hub for environmental education, food security, and urban sustainability.

The campaign is already off to a strong start, thanks to significant investments from the City of San Antonio, the Nancy Smith Hurd Foundation, and the Kronkosky Charitable Foundation. Their early support is helping Gardopia Gardens move from leasing to ownership, laying the groundwork for the development of a vibrant campus that will include outdoor classrooms, urban farm infrastructure, and a community gathering space designed to inspire lifelong learning and resilience.

Owning its headquarters will allow Gardopia Gardens to expand programming, strengthen long-term sustainability, and deepen its roots in the neighborhoods it serves. What began as a grassroots effort to grow healthy communities is now blossoming into a legacy project, one that ensures the organization’s mission can thrive for generations to come.

GARDOPIA GARDENS AND TRINITY UNIVERSITY HOST REGIONAL LEADERS FOR 2024 FOOD & NATURE EDUCATION CONFERENCE Gardopia Gardens proudly hosted the Food & Nature Education Conference at Trinity University, bringing together educators, students, community leaders, and sustainability advocates from across San Antonio.

The conference highlighted the intersection of food systems, environmental education, and community health, showcasing how garden-based learning can serve as a transformative tool for both classrooms and communities. Participants engaged in hands-on workshops, keynote discussions, and networking sessions that explored topics such as urban agriculture, climate resilience, nutrition education, soil science, and environmental justice. The event featured dynamic speakers from local universities, nonprofits, and city agencies, creating space for meaningful collaboration around the future of sustainable food education in Bexar County.

By convening this diverse network at Trinity University, Gardopia Gardens reinforced its mission to grow healthy communities through garden-based learning, empowering attendees to take actionable steps toward a more sustainable and equitable food system in San Antonio and beyond.

Victory Gardens Inspire Families to Grow, Learn, and Reconnect with the Land

Gardopia Gardens partnered with Alianza Raíces Vivas to launch the Victory Gardens Initiative, a collaboration designed to empower families to grow their own food and strengthen community resilience through gardening. Rooted in the spirit of unity and sustainability, this initiative reimagined the historic concept of “Victory Gardens” for the modern era, transforming backyards and community spaces into thriving hubs of nourishment, education, and hope.

Gardopia Gardens provided garden kits, compost, seedlings, and technical assistance to participating families, while Alianza Raíces Vivas offered cultural guidance and community engagement rooted in ancestral agricultural knowledge.

Participants also took part in immersive field trips to Alianza Raíces Vivas’ ranch, where they explored traditional growing methods, seed preservation, and sustainable land management practices firsthand. These visits deepened the connection between urban gardeners and rural farming traditions, reinforcing the values of stewardship, reciprocity, and ecological balance.

GROWING GREEN: GARDOPIA GARDENS AND SAN ANTONIO RODEO'S URBAN AGRICULTURE EXHIBIT Gardopia Gardens proudly presented the Urban Agriculture Exhibit at the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, inspiring thousands of visitors to explore the connection between food, farming, and sustainability. As a returning community partner, Gardopia showcased the power of urban agriculture through interactive displays, hands-on learning stations, and educational demonstrations highlighting the importance of growing food in city environments.

The exhibit featured youth-led garden installations, composting workshops, pollinator education, and nutritionfocused activities, giving guests of all ages the opportunity to experience how urban gardening supports health, environmental stewardship, and food security. Through these activities, Gardopia demonstrated how simple actions—like planting a seed or starting a compost pile—can spark long-term change in our neighborhoods.
