Dear Friends & Fellow Beef Producers,
It doesn’t seem possible to be welcoming you to our 20th Fall Production Sale. Much has changed since 2005, when we catalogued the first offering of fall sale cattle. As we think about drought, market volatility, wildfires, politics and life, we are simply grateful. We believe there is more opportunity than ever in our history to continue to improve beef IF we stay disciplined and focused on multi-trait selection for the traits of economic importance.
As I write this letter, the Certified Angus Beef Feeding Quality Forum has just wrapped up in Dodge City. I proudly profess to be a “cattle nerd,” and the CAB event brought many of the beef industry’s brightest minds to discuss the state of the beef industry from the best to our greatest challenges. The overwhelming take home message is the extraordinary advantage, from producer to consumer, of producing high quality, Certified Angus and Prime beef.
The possibility for new technology to capture and help manage data, the genomic tools available today and continually improving animal husbandry gives us even more incentives to stay laser focused on efficiency, health and quality.
Our industry seems determined to send a message cow-calf producers must “choose a lane.” At Gardiner Angus Ranch, we chose a lane in 1964 when Henry announced to Greg and me that we were going to become a total AI program, using ONLY progeny proven AI sires for all the traits of economic importance. We made very little progress until 1980, when the first American Angus Association Sire Summary was published. From that day forward, our program has selected for multi-trait excellence for ALL traits of economic importance.
Fertility, as always, is the Number One trait. Our conception rates per service are the same today as they were for Henry. Time restricted breeding is a reproductive management tool in our total AI program. Reproduction is nutrition. Without adequate nutrition, a female cannot reproduce. Angus cattle do very well with enough to eat!
Today, we purchase several thousand commercial steers and heifers from our customers. These commercial cow-calf customers, many purchasing seedstock from GAR for decades, have made continued improvements in their cow herds by keeping replacements fitting their individual breeding seasons, genetic benchmarks and environments. The heifers we purchase we breed to the best AI sires in the Angus breed—the same sires we breed our registered cattle to.
The steers are developed on wheat pasture during the winter and early spring or native grass in the summer and early fall before moving to the feedyard to finish on feed. The steers are sold through U.S. Premium Beef and the individual data returned to us. Since 2017, we have charted the results of our home-raised and customer steers and fed heifers. To date, we have charted 22,174 head. The eight-year results are remarkable and document the continued improvement across all traits. More than 98.5% have graded Choice or higher, 35.53% graded Prime, 34.21% qualified for CAB. In total, the cattle have earned more than $3.358 million above the base, resulting in $151.45 per head premium.
This sale will feature approximately 550 bred commercial replacement heifers, selling with complete Method Genetics EPDs and indexes for maternal (MPI), carcass quality (QPI) and retained ownership (ROI). Retained ownership income (ROI) is a complete production system approach from conception through carcass endpoint, tying reproduction, calving ease, maternal genetic merit, and growth through the calf’s lifetime, and quality-based carcass merit in an Angus-based cow herd. The females will sell in groups. Buyers must take a minimum of 10 head but may take more within a category or may take them all with the winning bid. As always, we offer free delivery.
They trust the process and have invested in genetics designed for multi-trait excellence. Their proof is our proof. They communicate with us. From genetic improvements in their replacements, conception rates, and final closeouts on their steers, we have proven decade after decade that multi-trait selection enables continued improvement in calving ease, early growth, stature, milk, and carcass quality.
Our 20th sale will feature 428 18-month-old bulls, 147 14-month-old bulls and 106 AI bred registered females. The 575 bulls average in the top 2% of the breed for marbling, $G and $B, top 15% ribeye and calving ease, top 20% for weaning and yearling growth and carcass weight. The bulls rank in the top 6% for Method Genetics QPI and 8% ROI.
The young females rank in the top 10% of the breed for calving ease, top 20% for weaning and yearling weight, top 25% for carcass weight, top 10% for marbling and ribeye, and top 4% for $B. The females rank in the top 23% for Method Genetics MPI, top 9% QPI and top 11% ROI.
The majority of the offering is sired by Transcendent, Home Town, Home Free, Incentive, Kansas, Dual Threat, Grass Roots, and Fireball.
We encourage our customers to continue their discipline, discard the noise and focus on what makes money in the beef business. Investing in genetics that provide birth to harvest opportunity to add quality and value to make money.
Plan to join us Sunday evening, September 22, at 5:00 PM, for dinner, immediately followed by our pre-sale educational discussion. Family-owned beef operations are essential to agriculture and food production in America. Kevin Yon, Yon Family Farms, Ridge Spring, South Carolina, and Don Schiefelbein, Schiefelbein Farms, Kimball, Minnesota, will join us in a thoughtful conversation about sustaining generational family farms and ranches today.
We hope you can join us for our 20th Fall Production Sale. We look forward to seeing you all. We are experiencing record setting demand for quality beef, supported by one of the most bullish markets in my lifetime. Let’s embrace the challenge to continue to make beef better!
We are truly thankful for your business. Our collective curiousity to learn, share and improve makes beef better!

Words can’t adequately describe our appreciation for the hard work and loyalty of our small but mighty staff. Each staff member accomplishes the work of multiple people, all in an effort to get the job done. Whether it’s planting, harvesting, working several thousand head of cattle multiple times a year, breeding, feeding, processing, calving, repairing equipment—there is NO job this crew can’t do. While we all appreciate our educations, life lessons of hard work, honesty, responsibility and integrity are learned outside the classroom.
Jeff Golden began with GAR as a student at K-State. Following graduation in 1984, Jeff began working full time. Jeff’s main responsibilities include managing herd health as well as overseeing calving of the two year old heifers, and freeze branding thousands of GAR cattle each year. Jeff is as good of cowboy as we know. His ability to see the condition of the cattle and the country is valuable to us. Jeff and his wife, Sheryl, have two children, Zane and Grace. Jeff and his family live just east of GAR on their own operation.
Scott Tune has been with GAR since June, 2002. Prior to joining the GAR team, Scott worked for Bar Six Dirt Construction. Scott oversees much of our farming during the summer. During the winter, Scott is an ace heat checker and assists in herd health at the GAR AI barn. Scott has delivered many GAR cattle all over the U.S. He does it proficiently and with a smile. Scott and his wife, Connie, live on the Gabbert Ranch at GAR.
Kurt Borgelt, native Nebraskan, moved to Clark County in 2004. Kurt has a degree in Animal Science from Univ. of Nebraska and is an allaround good hand in the GAR operation. Whether it’s heat detection, feed bunk management or herd heath, Kurt knows cattle! Kurt’s excellent feed bunk management has enabled GAR to consolidate bull development back on the ranch. Kurt and his wife, Aimee, have three children, Austin, Nicole and Landon, and reside just east of the GAR AI barn.
Eric Campbell came to GAR in August, 2004, with extensive feedlot and ranch experience. Eric assists with heat detecting and winter feeding at the AI barn. During the summer, Eric also shares much of the farming responsibilities. Eric never met a job that was too big or too small and has a great attitude! Eric and his wife, Emilie, have two children, Mahala and Mykelti, and live on the Dunne Ranch.
Landon Borgelt grew up on Gardiner Angus Ranch and is the son of Kurt and Aimee Borgelt.
Landon graduated from Ashland High School and attended Pratt Community College. Landon is keenly aware of the demands of our diverse ranching and farming operation. He assists in our minimum till farming operation and is responsible for much of the equipment maintenance. During fall calving, he assists in tattooing and data collection. We are grateful Landon decided to return to the Ashland community and Gardiner Angus Ranch.
Calen Bailey was a fall 2020 intern at GAR. As a full-time team member, Calen is someone we depend on to “do it all!” When Calen takes responsibility for any task, there is no detail left to chance. We appreciate Calen’s curiosity and determination to tackle any job, from farming to working cattle. Her demeanor is engaging and positive. Her willingness to problem solve is priceless.
Todd Paisley was one of our spring 2024 interns. After graduating from the University of Wyoming in May, Todd has joined the GAR team and is applying to vet school. He is involved in all aspects of the operation, gaining valuable experience in the skills he will need as a practicing veterinarian. We are certain Todd’s intellect, calm demeanor, empathy and work ethic will help him to become an outstanding large animal practitioner in the future.
Since 2012, The Gardiner Angus Ranch structured internship program has hosted 72 students from universities across the U.S. and internationally.
Three students have joined the GAR Team for their fall internships.
William Jicks, from LSU, has experience growing up on his family’s Angus and Arabian horse operation. He was a collegiate wrestler and has been wrestling since the age of six years old. William, like many of our interns, goals are somewhat undecided, but are certain to want to pursue a career in agriculture and the beef industry.
Joelle Herbert has experience on the Univ. of Florida’s Horse Judging Team and is currently an undergraduate research assistant
studying ruminant nutrition. Joelle’s future interests include expanding her knowledge and experience in the areas of genetics, sire selections, breeding programs and day-today management.
Maris Shipley’s interest in beef cattle was piqued at Olathe High School when she participated in an animal science and research program as well as her participation in FFA. Dodge City Community College has enabled Maris to become fully immersed in animal science and ranch management.
She has completed BQA certification for cow-calf, feedyard, stocker/backgrounder and transportation.
The students arrive with lots of goals, aspirations and hopes to continue to gain useful experience and eventually become professionals in agriculture. While experience is helpful, it has never been a prerequisite for an internship. Curiosity and a willingness to learn, however, are.
The fall interns arrive just days before we begin ultrasounding thousands of cattle and embryo transfer on over 100 donors. From day one, interns learn low-stress handling, horsemanship, reproduction, data collection and basic animal husbandry skills.
In addition to our “day jobs” at GAR, the interns have an opportunity to travel with Mark to visit other seedstock operations, feedlots and GAR commercial cow-calf operations. They also are invited to accompany him to speaking and presentation events. A few nuggets of Great Plains history are always included!
Each intern cohort is unique. We are grateful that students from all across the country, and internationally, applied and made the commitment to advance their education at Gardiner Angus Ranch. It is rewarding and reassuring to know these bright, young students are preparing themselves for careers in food animal production and will continue to pay it forward. Welcome to Our 2024 Fall Interns!
There are 575 bulls featured in our 20th Annual Fall Production Sale. These bulls are sired by what we consider the best bulls of the breed. The highest use sires of the bulls in the sale are our most trusted herd sires. Sixty percent of the bulls selling are sired by the sires listed below:

Average Method Genetic Predictions For The 2024 Fall Sale Bulls
We feed a lot of our own home raised cattle and purchased customer cattle. This “skin in the game” keeps us in tune with what makes money in the beef business. Below are the results of these cattle. Our “genetic hedge” has allowed us and our customers to be profitable.
Since 2017, Gardiner Angus Ranch and GAR customers have earned $151.45 per head, totaling $3,358,338 in premiums above the base price.
In 2024, Gardiner Angus Ranch and GAR customers have earned $138.31 per head, totaling $289,482.56 in premiums above the base price.
Birth to harvest beef production in a value-based market means breeding cattle with genetic potential to be profitable, regardless of market volatility, for the cow-calf producer, the cattle feeder and the packer. Our decades of breeding discipline and consistent presence in all sectors of the marketplace provide real time, accurate information to our customers. GAR commercial cow-calf producers anticipate value in replacements or for those heifers not meeting replacement criteria, having equal value as their steer mates.
G3416 is one of the most powerful Fireball sons to date. He is a leader in the entire Angus breed for his indexes and he is dominant in the elite traits of economic importance. Every calf crop we have the opportunity to improve. This Lot 1 bull and his genetics will make a difference in our industry. He is a true power bull in the correct package. Selling 100% possession and retaining 1/2 revenue sharing and semen interest.
Fireball x Prophet K263 just works so well. The enhancement of breeding the best to the best never fails. John Crouch used to use the quote “Like begets like.” G3450 will beget offspring of unparalleled magnitude! Selling 100% possession and retaining 1/2 revenue sharing and semen interest.
A few short years ago, a bull like G3441 would not have possible to create. When we create these bigger populations of elite cattle, we than have the ability to select from these calf crops the next generation of leaders that allow for breed improvement. That to me is exciting (and necessary)!! Selling 100% possession and retaining 1/2 revenue sharing and semen interest.
G3460 is the Number 2 ROI bull of this fall sale. He is truly special considering his top 1% ranking for CED, $B, $C, QPI, ROI and top 4% MPI AND bottom 20% YH. His 2.55 marbling is not only unique, it is breed leading and allows you to make a directional change in 1 mating. We truly believe this multiple trait merit allows the flexibility for simultaneous breed improvement for so many traits! Take a gander at his ultrasound results… BAM!! Selling 100% possession and retaining 1/2 revenue sharing and semen interest.
These Transcendent sons are reaching over +2 for marbling and over +1 for REA, routinely. Our USPB closeouts confirm that he is exactly what his data tells us. Marbling adds value, taste and tenderness and is a critical component to changing populations of Angus cattle. Selling 100% possession and retaining 1/2 revenue sharing and semen interest.
Why is it important to be over 1 for marbling and muscle? Marbling differentiates beef by the pound, and RE/cwt is crucial in having cattle hit the targets of value without having YG 4 & 5 discounts. Marbling is the most important component in beef to deliver taste. Marbling is the trait that is worth more money for all! Selling 100% possession and retaining 1/2 revenue sharing and semen interest.
Special bull with a pedigree we cherish. It is exciting to offer cattle like this that can make so much change in a cowherd in the 1st mating by adding genetics of economic VALUE! Selling 100% possession and retaining 1/2 revenue sharing and semen interest.
N5143 is an amazing illustration of “you can have it
offers breed leading genetics for the traits of economic magnitude. Today, with genomics we are able to identify seedstock that need to be multiplied to make Beef BETTER, so much faster and with much more accuracy then the past. N5143 truly deserves to be sampled, validated and multiplied to make the next generation even better! Selling 100% possession and retaining 1/2 revenue sharing and semen interest.
We were fortunate to experience the Northern Lights phenomenon on May 13. According to scientists, the event to cause the Northern Lights originates over 93 million miles away on the surface of the sun. By the time it reached the skies over Southwest Kansas, it was stunning.
100% of the proceeds from the sale of Lot 10 will be donated to the Henry Gardiner Scholarship & Lecture Series
Henry Gardiner’s belief was to “pay it forward” and leave everything better than you found it. Due to the generosity of our friends and customers The Henry C. Gardiner Scholarship has awarded $250,500 in scholarship money to 54 students at Kansas State University. 100% of the proceeds go to the scholarship and lecture series. Thank you all very much!

You will notice we are selling revenue sharing and semen interests on all bulls. This means the bull is totally in your control in how you want to handle him and you get 100% of the salvage value of the bull. Simply, we are reserving the right to a share of semen sales revenue from the bull if, at some time in the future, semen sales become a possibility. If you sell the bull to another breeder, Gardiner Angus Ranch retains the semen interest.
It is unlikely that large amounts of semen will be sold from many bulls. However, bulls are often “discovered” later in life, after proving themselves in the breeding pasture. It is for this reason we keep a semen interest in all bulls sold in our production sale.
Even bulls sold to commercial herds may become popular at a later time, as more carcass data is collected on their calves.
If you purchase a bull that we retain an interest in and you choose to collect semen from that bull as an “insurance policy” for your own use, that semen is 100% yours. Gardiner Angus Ranch may also wish to collect semen from the bull, either for in-herd use or to build a jointlyowned semen bank for sale purposes.
If you are not interested in collecting semen on the bull, GAR has the right to collect the bull, at their own expense, for their own use. Semen collection will be arranged at the convenience of the owner of the possession interest.

Gardiner Angus Ranch offers its customers free delivery anywhere in the lower 48 states. As a part of that delivery we work with reputable livestock transportation companies that we feel comfortable with in the handling of your cattle in both a professional and conscientious way. GAR will do everything possible to deliver your cattle to a point that is convenient for both you and the trucking company. In some cases where there are cattle from multiple owners loaded on the same truck, it is necessary for the buyer to meet the truck at a centaral location such as a livestock auction or veterinary clinic relatively close to them. We also encourage the drivers to be as flexible as possible and request that they not deliver your cattle in the middle of the night if avoidable. If you would like to insure your cattle, you can do so on sale day. Most of the cattle to be delivered from the sale are delivered within 45 days after the sale. If, for any reason, you desire an expedited delivery, please notify Grant Gardiner at (620) 635-0382 or email grant.c.gardiner@gmail.com and we will make arrangements for quicker delivery.

Our goal to make beef better is a message to ourselves reminding us to stay focused on every aspect of beef production. From selecting elite donors each year, designing matings, maximizing our forage resources to more efficiently add quality pounds, feeding and processing through U.S. Premium Beef—every decision we make is intentional to make beef better from birth to beef.
Today, we bid, buy and feed several thousand head of home-raised and customer cattle. The performance of each group is documented. The steers are fed and finished in some of the finest, most professional cattle feeding operations in the country. It’s important to note that, with every purchase or, in the case of our home-raised steers, their heifer mates become replacements in their respective cow herds.
The feedlot relationships we rely on to manage elite genetics have been built over two
generations. These professional cattle feeders understand the nutritional requirements of elite, higher performing Angus feeder cattle.
Early in the summer, we took delivery on a group of 300 steers weighing 600 pounds. The steers were purchased from a longtime GAR customer, Joe Howard and Bobbie Williamson, Wichita Falls, Texas.
The steers were worked and turned out in a large
GAR pasture of native grass to do what they do best—convert cellulose to beef… ALMOST FREE!
November 21, the steers were gathered in the pasture, loaded on trucks, and delivered to Shaw Feedyard. Within an hour after arriving the steers were moved to a dry pen with a full bunk of rations designed to maximize their genetic potential to gain four pounds or more per day.
The steers will be marketed on the U.S. Premium Beef grid and delivered to National Beef in the Spring of 2024.
Joe Howard & Bobbie Williamson, Switch House Ranch, have used Gardiner Angus Ranch bulls for decades. We have purchased and fed these cattle for many years.

For the first time, cattlemen can earn grid premiums based on the genetic merit of their cattle, stemming from their investment in superior genetics. National Beef Packing Co., LLC (NBP) announces the addition of new premiums on their U.S. Premium Beef, LLC (USPB) grid for qualified cattle based on their AngusLinkSM Genetic Merit ScorecardSM (GMS). AngusLinkSM value-added programs are administered by the American Angus Association in partnership with IMI Global.
Effective for cattle harvested Aug. 5, a grid premium of $5 per head will be paid for cattle with a Beef Score of 100 or greater on the AngusLinkSM GMS. This will be exclusively available for cattle marketed through USPB and delivered to NBP plant locations in Liberal and Dodge City, Kansas.
On Dec. 1, a second grid premium, $10 per head for cattle with a GMS Beef Score of 150 or greater, will take effect. Those scoring 100149 will continue to receive the $5/head premium. These premiums will be in addition to all other premiums and discounts available based on grading and carcass performance.
“National Beef is pleased to offer U.S. Premium Beef members this grid premium and new program in cooperation with the American Angus Association,” said Chad Barker, vice president of cattle procurement with NBP. “We’re excited to be adding another chapter to our history of creating innovative ways to reward producers for high-quality cattle.”
This offering of 552 GAR-Influenced bred cows and heifers represent both volume and value. Group 1 is a group of AI bred cows. Groups 1 through 51 cows and heifers are AI bred to elite GAR sires. You buy good bulls with key genetic values for herd improvement. You know that EPDs are a selection tool to assist in focusing your production goals. You target an industry-focused high quality carcass value as part of your breeding goals.
Yet, when it comes to the cow herd and replacement heifer choices or selection strategies, the access to commercial genetic selection tools aligned with your goals and in the language of our industry (EPDs, indexes) is limited.
Method Genetics® results may just be what you need. In nearly six years (that’s about a generation interval in a commercial cow calf operation), Method customers in over 20 states now have access to EPDs and index values for their females to fine tune their selection strategies. This is a progressive step beyond just placing genetic pressure on the sire side of the equation.
What is the goal of Method Genetics?
Method Genetics provides a flexible, analytical opportunity for Angus-based cattle producers by using DNA technology and incorporating it into a genetic evaluation system.
Who is the target audience of Method?
Method selection tools are geared toward commercial Angus cow herds interested in characterizing potential replacement heifers and foundation females.
Why is Method Genetics different?
Established in 2014, Method Genetics LLC provides genetic selection tools and decision-making assistance related to commercial cattle production. Through the Method single-step multi-trait genetic evaluation, commercial cow-calf operators can access EPDs and indexes on their cow herd for use in genetic selection. DNA technology makes this selection advantage available to commercial herds, large and small, that in the past could only use EPDs in sire selection.
How do I use Method Genetics results?
Method results are typically used to rank replacement females for selection and culling. Producers review Method results when purchasing potential herd sires and use the Method rankings to match their herd goals. Emphasis is placed on the Method indexes for maternal, growth, and retained ownership.
How do I begin participating in Method Genetics?
Most producers begin by collecting DNA samples for genotyping. Blood cards and tissue sampling units are acceptable. There are no enrollment fees. Many producers have historical data from their herds (weaning weights, carcass data) that they have not ever really been able to fully utilize to aide in selection for their herds. This information can also
be incorporated into the genetic evaluation to give producers even more informative selection tools.
How are Method indexes (MPI, QPI, and ROI) computed?
Your genotyping results on tested animals go through our complete genetic evaluation that generates key Method Genetics EPDs and indexes. Method has a database of performance trait records, pedigrees, and DNA genotypes used in a single-step genetic evaluation to derive EPDs for use in the Method indexes. Method does not use breed organization EPDs are part of this process. Because of what we know about EPDs and their derivation, Method results are comparable to other Method results, but they are not comparable to breed organization EPDs.
Can this testing identify parentage?
Method Genetics has a large database of AI and natural service sires for use in sire assignment. Participants with tested females on file have the opportunity to generate pedigrees from this parentage benefit, adding increase accuracy to their Method results. Parentage work is included in the Method DNA testing at no cost.
What details are needed on commercial Angus samples for DNA testing?
Samples are sent directly to Method Genetics personnel. The minimum inputs needed for commercial cattle DNA samples are a unique herd ID, approximate age, and gender for each sample. We can incorporate any pedigree you know, also.
What is Method ROI that I keep hearing about and seeing in catalogs?
Cattle producers interested in a complete production system approach from conception through carcass end-point would typically use the Retained Ownership Income (ROI) index as a tool. ROI ties together reproduction, calving ease, maternal genetic merit, growth throughout the calf’s lifetime, and quality-based carcass merit in an Angus-based herd. The ROI is reported in dollars per calf produced in the herd, and it consolidates the sub-indexes of MPI and QPI.
What results are received after testing is completed?
Most producers receive the Method EPDs for calving ease, carcass traits, and docility. Of primary interest are the three Method Genetic index (MPI, QPI, ROI) solutions that accompany the EPDs. Results are returned in a sortable spreadsheet for use at the operation in breeding, selection and culling decisions.
How do my Method results compare to cow herds with similar goals?
Method customers receive summary statistics to compare their herd results to a database of similar commercial cow herds with goals focused on maternal and retained ownership traits for a high-quality carcass product. This benchmark data helps Method customers characterize and understand where their current herd’s genetic level is and provides specific selection direction to reach goals for consistent, high-quality production of USDA Prime and Premium Choice product.
What is the Method Genetics Marketing Advantage?
Beyond the use of Method results for selection decisions by a commercial cow-calf producer, this information has become a reliable means to characterize the genetic merit of replacement females, providing confidence for buyers purchasing replacements. Selecting commercial replacement females with the Method Genetics results allow a producer to jump-start their program with known genetics based on a proven track record.
MPI: Maternal Production
QPI: Quality Pounds
ROI: Retained Ownership Income
Where do the percentile ranks on young sires and AI sires seen in catalogs come from?
Method has seedstock participants using the Method Prime test and they receive more detailed EPDs and percentiles based upon the Method Genetic population. They have made a commitment to their customers using the Method Genetics system by testing and providing the Method indexes on the bulls they offer. The bulls they sell provide a great opportunity as they have Method EPDs and indexes which are comparable to other Method Genetics-generated solutions, regardless of the testing points.
How do I choose a level of testing at Method?
Most commercial Angus herds go with the Method Choice ($35). Method Prime runs $45 as of today and is used mostly by seedstock participants. What age do I pull DNA samples on my animals?
DNA samples can be collected at any age. Advanced customers in the Method system have begun to use tissue sampling units on calves after birth. We encourage customers to conservatively approach testing and focus on the newest generations of their cattle.
I am already testing with Method Genetics, so how can I learn more about my cattle?
If details are provided from the customer, we use existing pedigree information (for example on registered Angus bulls owned or AI sires being used or females of known genetics) to fill in relationship gaps, as well as incorporating this pedigree information into the genetic evaluation tools created. From a performance record standpoint, we can also incorporate these data (contemporary group weaning weights for example) into a genetic evaluation and key EPDs and index values include this information.
We continue to add performance records, pedigree, and genotypes to the Method genetic evaluation. An EPD is a prediction of an animal’s true genetic merit that has an associated possible change, or standard error of prediction. EPDs are not static values and can change as more is information is incorporated into the system from one evaluation to the next. Customers actively participating in the Method Genetics program can request cow herd updates as needed to better prepare for bull selection and breeding herd management.
How can I learn more about Method Genetics benefits?

Expected Progeny Differences (EPD), is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. Interim EPDs may appear on young animals when their performance has yet to be incorporated into the American Angus Association National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) procedures. This EPD will be preceded by an “I”, and may or may not include the animal’s own performance record for a particular trait, depending on its availability, appropriate contemporary grouping, or data edits needed for NCE.
Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers.
Birth Weight EPD (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires.
Weaning Weight EPD (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.
Yearling Weight EPD (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires.
Residual Average Daily Gain (RADG), expressed in pounds per day, is a predictor of a sire’s genetic ability for postweaning gain in future progeny compared to that of other sires, given a constant amount of feed consumed.
Dry Matter Intake (DMI), expressed in pounds per day, is a predictor of difference transmitting ability for feed intake during the postweaning phase, compared to that of other sires.
Yearling Height EPD (YH), is a predictor of a sire’s ability to transmit yearling height, expressed in inches, compared to that of other sires.
Scrotal Circumference EPD (SC), expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires.
Docility (DOC), is expressed as a difference in yearling cattle temperament, with a higher value indicating more favorable docility. It predicts the average difference of progeny from a sire in comparison with another sire’s calves. In herds where temperament problems are not an issue, this expected difference would not be realized.
Heifer Pregnancy (HP), the heifer pregnancy EPDs are designed to characterize differences among sires in the Angus breed for daughter’s heifer pregnancy. When comparing two sires based on their heifer pregnancy EPDs (reported in units of percentage), a higher EPD sire would be expected to have daughters with a greater probability or chance of becoming pregnant than a sire with the lower EPD.
Calving Ease Maternal (CEM), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf daughters. It predicts the average ease with which a sire’s daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires.
Maternal Milk EPD (Milk), is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.
Mature Weight EPD (MW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of the difference in mature weight of daughters of a sire compared to the daughters of other sires.
Mature Height EPD (MH), expressed in inches, is a predictor of
the difference in mature height of a sire’s daughters compared to daughters of other sires.
Cow Energy Value ($EN), expressed in dollar savings per cow per year, assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals (more dollars saved on feed energy expenses). Components for computing the cow $EN savings difference include lactation energy requirements and energy costs associated with differences in mature cow size.
CARCASS
Carcass Weight EPD (CW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
Marbling EPD (Marb), expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
Ribeye Area EPD (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.
Fat Thickness EPD (Fat), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire’s progeny compared to progeny of other sires.

Rump Fat Ratio: The percent above or below average (100= average) a bull or female is for its rump fat scan within its contemporary group.
$VALUE INDEXES
$Maternal ($M), an index, expressed in dollars per head, predicts profitability differences from conception to weaning with the underlying breeding objective assuming that individuals retain their own replacement females within herd and sell the rest of the cull females and all male progeny as feeder calves. The model assumes commercial producers will replace 25% of their breeding females in the first generation and 20% of their breeding females in each subsequent generation. Traits included are as follows: calving ease direct, calving ease maternal, weaning weight, milk, heifer pregnancy, docility, mature cow weight, claw set and foot angle.
Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for pre-weaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk, and mature cow size.
Feedlot Value ($F), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for post-weaning merit compared to progeny of other sires.
Grid Value ($G), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires.
Beef Value ($B), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for post-weaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires.
Combined Value ($C), an index, expressed in dollars per head, which includes all traits that make up both Maternal Weaned Calf Value ($M) and Beef Value ($B) with the objective that commercial producers will replace 20% of their breeding females per year with replacement heifers retained within their own herd. The remaining cull heifer and steer progeny are then assumed to be sent to the feedlot where the producers retain ownership of those cattle and sell them on a quality-based carcass merit grid. Expected progeny differences (EPDs) directly influencing a combined index: calving ease direct (CED) and maternal (CEM), weaning weight (WW), yearling weight (YW), maternal milk (Milk), heifer pregnancy (HP), docility (DOC), mature cow weight (MW), foot angle (Angle), claw set (Claw), dry matter intake (DMI), marbling (Marb), carcass weight (CW), ribeye area (RE) and fat thickness (Fat).
DAM’S PRODUCTION RECORD:
Act.BW — Actual Birth Weight: The number of calves each dam has had and the average actual birth weight of those calves. Example: 3-81 means the dam has had 3 calves with an average actual birth weight of 81 pounds.
BWR — Birth Weight Ratio: The number of calves a dam has had and their average birth weight ratio. Example: 2-98 means the dam has had 2 calves with an average BWR of 98.
WWR — Weaning Weight Ratio: The number of calves a dam has had and their average weaning weight ratio. Example: 2-102 means the dam has had 2 calves with an average WWR of 102. YWR — Yearling Weight Ratio: The number of calves a dam has had and their average yearling weight ratio. Example: 2-103 means the dam has had 2 calves with an average YWR of 103.
DAM’S ULTRASOUND PRODUCTION RECORD
%IMF: The number of calves that each dam has had, and the average %IMF ratio on those calves. Example: 11-112 means that the dam of this animal has had 11 progeny ultrasounded for IMF with an average ratio of 112.
REA: The number of calves that each dam has had, and the average ribeye area ratio on those calves. Example: 11-112 means that the dam of this animal has had 11 progeny ultrasounded for REA with an average ratio of 112.
Fat: The number of calves that each dam has had, and the average rib fat ratio on those calves. Example: 11-112 means that the dam of this animal has had 11 progeny ultrasounded for rib fat with an average ratio of 112. A ratio above 100 would mean that this animal has above average rib fat (more fat) and a ratio of less than 100 means that the animal has less rib fat (less fat) within the animal’s contemporary group.
RU Fat: The number of calves that each dam has had, and the average rump fat ratio on those calves. Example: 11-112 means that the dam of this animal has had 11 progeny ultrasounded for rump fat with an average ratio of 112. A ratio above 100 would mean that this animal has above average rump fat (more fat) and a ratio of less than 100 means that the animal has less rump fat (less fat) within the animal’s contemporary group.
BW — Birth Weight: The actual weight in pounds at birth.
Calving-Ease Score: 1 = unassisted; 2 = some assistance; 3 = mechanical assistance.
CARCASS WEIGHT (CW): The carcass weight EPD is reported in pounds of harvest carcass weight. As with other weight traits, selection for weight genetics is moderately to highly heritable and will lead to increased directional genetic change in pounds. The CW EPD has contributions not only from the genotyped calves, but harvest carcass records, ultrasound indicator trait results, and available pedigree.
MARBLING (MARB): Marbling EPDs are reported in harvest marbling score units, with a higher value being more favorable.
RIBEYE AREA (REA): The ribeye area EPD, with a higher value as the typical desired direction, can be used to place selection pressure on this trait to impact red meat yield.
CALVING EASE DIRECT (CED): Reported as a percentage of unassisted calvings, this EPD is used to select favorable calving ease genetics for use in matings to first calf heifers. The value is more noted for sire selection. In Angus-influenced herds that have heavily emphasized calving ease genetics, selection pressure for this trait may or may not be a priority. A higher value is more favorable. For example if there was a 5 percentage point difference between to animals (+10 vs +5), one would expect 5 more calves out of 100 to be born unassisted in future progeny, to favor choosing the animal with the CED of +10.
DOCILITY (DOC): Docility is reported as a convenience trait with a higher value favoring more docile temperament. Reported in percentage units, these EPDs can be used as an accessory sorting tool as needed.
CALVING EASE MATERNAL (CEM): This EPD is applicable to calves out of daughters of first-calf heifers and their unassisted calving percentage difference relative to other individuals. Again, as with CED, a higher value is more favorable and reported in units of percent.
MATERNAL PRODUCTION INDEX (MPI): The Maternal Production Index is reported in dollars per calf produced from the breeding herd with Angus-based genetics. It encompasses direct and maternal calving ease, heifer pregnancy, weaning growth, maternal milk, and mature size differences in a scenario where replacement females are retained and calves are marketed at weaning.
QUALITY POUNDS INDEX (QPI): The Quality Pounds Index is reported in dollars per calf for herds with Angus-based genetics. It focuses on the terminal side of the herd’s business for feedlot gain and carcass merit genetic differences. There are no provisions for calving ease or maternal traits, with the assumption that all calves are under a retained ownership scenario fed out and marketed on a premium quality-based grid.
RETAINED OWNERSHIP INCOME (ROI): Cattle producers interested in a complete production system approach from conception through carcass end-point should use the Retained Ownership Income index ties together reproduction, calving ease, maternal genetic merit, growth throughout the calf’s lifetime, and quality based carcass merit in an Angus-based herd. The ROI is reported in dollars per calf produced in the herd, and consolidates the sub-indexes of MPI and QPI.
METHOD GENETICS EPD AND INDEX PERCENTILE RANKS (%) are a numeric ranking of the animal’s EPD and Index values on a 1% to 100% scale. For most traits a lower numeric value is considered more favorable, such as for CED EPD. For example, a 25% presented with an EPD indicates that animal is in the upper 25 percent of the animals in the Method Genetics evaluation for calves born in the last five years.
We guarantee that all breeding cattle sold by Gardiner Angus Ranch, both bulls and females, are fertile to the best of our knowledge. If a bull is injured at any time in the 12 months following the sale so as to make them functionally infertile, we will provide you with a satisfactory replacement, if available, or issue you a credit equal to the bull’s purchase price minus the salvage value received for that bull. If a female is determined to be a non-breeder, then we would ask you to sell her and would offer you the difference of her purchase price minus the salvage value as a credit in any future GAR sale. This guarantee is in addition to the Sale Terms and Conditions of the American Angus Association which also apply.
In some cases where there are cattle from multiple owners loaded on the same truck, it is necessary for the buyer to meet the truck at a central location such as a livestock auction or veterinary clinic relatively close to them.

There are certain bills in life that are a pain.
I dislike paying for parking. In my mind, walking an extra block or two to avoid that pesky $5/hour charge is totally worth it. My husband will pay for parking but thinks bank checks should be free.
For other products or services, however, I am happy to pay. The differences really come down to what we value as individuals. My farrier’s services are essential, and I am happy to pay him every six weeks. I don’t consider it a cost. I see it as an essential ingredient to fill my cup.
Gardiners feel the same about paying Howard Fehlman to clip 1,400+ head of sale cattle every year.
“You don’t come to Ashland, Kansas, because you were headed there, that’s part of putting on a professional production — putting on the show. Those cattle need to look their very best, so that’s been the cost of doing business,” states Mark Gardiner.
Greg Gardiner recalls the days he and Mark did all the clipping.
“Whatever set of clothes you start in, plan on burning them when you’re done!
“We don’t do anything to them ahead of sale day after he’s finished them,” explains Greg. “They’re just ready to go.”
Giving customers all the information they can on each animal (genotype- and phenotype-wise) is always a Gardiner goal, so it’s only fitting that nothing is hidden under long hair. “There’s a bare bones animal. You evaluate what you like or don’t like,” states Greg.
As a teenager and even as a young man, Howard didn’t foresee himself making a life out of clipping show and sale cattle. But being skilled at a necessary, yet labor intensive task, often means the work finds you.
After working on a few purebred operations throughout Kansas and in a saddle shop, Howard and his wife, Deb, moved to Junction City, Kansas, in 1985. They started a custom cattle fitting business.
“Over time, you know, you’d end up clipping a few sale cattle here or there, or somebody needed a handful clipped. Then as time progressed, you did one (operation), and then pretty soon you were doing two,” Howard explains.
What’s the trick to clipping cattle?
“Make every move count! Have a process and do the same thing every time, in the same order.”
“You never thought you could be so sore in so many different places. And I’m talking about when I was in my twenties and thirties. Today, there’s no way. I’m not going to do it. [Paying someone else,] that’s good money well spent. Thank you very much!”
Howard and his crew pull in to the Gardiner Angus Ranch (GAR) around Jan. 1 and start prepping cattle for the January sale. Then just a few short months later they are back in Ashland clipping for the April and May sales.
“He’s steadfast, loyal. He’s very quiet, but he knows how to do it —he knows cattle,” says Mark of Howard’s character and skill.
Greg describes Howard as having a perfectly waxed handlebar mustache and someone who can transition from an “intricate cattle barber” on show cattle to a man that rolls into GAR and completely shears sale cattle down to their “bare bones.”
He says it’s not a full-time job year-round, but during sale season, he doesn’t spend much time at home either. From basically the first of the year until the first of April, Howard is either clipping cattle, sitting in a motel watching it rain or snow, or he is driving to the next job.
Growing a business by word of mouth, means you have to be flexible.
“We traveled a seven- or eight-state area, and actually, as we got busier, we drove less miles just because you didn’t have to travel so far between jobs,” he recounts.
Like Howard says, “nothing is ever wrought in stone,” and in 2017 a wildfire destroyed much of GAR’s working facilities, killed cattle and burned others. Mark recalls a tough phone call to Howard that year. “The hardest call that I ever made was after the fire. Everything was in disarray. I called Howard and said, ‘We can’t clip them. It’s just too big a mess. We don’t have time. We’ve got to save the survivors, and the sales got to go on,’ and he said, ‘I understand.’”
But what rose from the ashes of the fire would make Howard’s job
easier in the future. “Originally up at the old AI barn, we came out of the side of the tub, and we had to basically build our own facility with panels, you know, which was fun!” Howard smirks.
Today, his crew have their own alley in the processing barn, complete with a roof and a solid north wall to try to keep winter weather away. Howard brings his own “iron” — blocking chutes — that are backed up to a split alley. GAR crew members, oftentimes the interns, keep the stock coming. “We never have to leave the chutes. They’re very accommodating,” he notes. With good facilities and an even better crew, Howard’s team averages 100 head a day.
While the idea of shearing anywhere from 1,300 head to 1,500 head would be intimidating to anyone, Howard says it’s actually a relief to arrive at Gardiner’s in the spring because he knows he’ll be there for a while (two weeks) instead of working all day and tearing down that night.
Howard’s daughter, Kati Richardson, started helping with clipping jobs when she was in high school. After graduation, she transitioned from tagging along to a full-time employee in the business. It was a natural choice for her. She’s been her daddy’s shadow her whole life.
“He’s kind of somebody with a tough exterior, but deep down, he’s just a really great guy and somebody that you can really lean on if you need to,” Kati beams.
“He’s been that for me, and I couldn’t have asked for a better dad, and he’s helped me a lot, and basically made me the person I am today.”
Looking up to him the way she does, Kati can recall the day he asked if she was ready to go to Gardiner’s with him. “He said, ‘Honey, would you like to go to Gardiner’s?’ It kind of took me by surprise, and I guess, I never thought that I would get the opportunity to do that one,” she admits. Kati says once she overcame the shock and awe of the size and scale of GAR and the massive task that lay before the two clipping crews, she found herself enjoying the job.
“You get in there and shear cows, and you shear cows until you’re done. Having the two crews there, my dad, and then Luke Fowler and Chuck Holder, it just made it fun!”
Kati says there was always a little competition between the two shearing teams when they came to Gardiner’s. There are enough total cattle, so we can compete a little with each other and see who can do more a day or who can get done faster.
In such labor-intensive work, it’s the small things that count; like how many steps you have to take in a day or making sure you and your partner are working on different parts of the animal to stay out of each other’s way, explains Howard. Once each team and partners get in sync, this cattle clipping crew is a quiet, albeit, well-oiled machine.
In some ways, the crew and especially Howard, have become machinists themselves. Sharpening blades at least once, sometimes twice, a day and replacing a set a clippers every two years makes a person familiar with their metals of choice. Howard and now Kati, too, like the shine of silver.
During his tenure in the saddle shop, Howard spent time learning the silversmithing trade. “They had an old bit and spur shop that nobody was working in. I always liked to weld and stuff
like that, so I got to playing around in that on weekends and at night. There really wasn’t anybody around to tell you how to do it. Just one guy said, ‘I think the guy did this... this way.’
And somebody else said, ‘Well, I think they did this kind of this way.’ And there was a lot of trial and errors,” says Howard.
Eventually Howard left the saddle shop to start clipping show cattle and no longer had access to the tools. He started collecting what he needed here and there. Making a pair of spurs now and then and playing around. In the early 90s he attended a month-long silversmithing course from Miller Bit and Spur. He learned more silver work techniques along with silver inlay, engraving and more.
Not much for words, Howard is a man of action. To show his appreciation to Nan Gardiner, he set his silver skills to work. Nan, known for her cooking, recognized the value of a hearty noon meal and knew how to fuel hard workers. Howard recalls eating lunch in Nan and Henry’s home every day during clipping.
“I made her this pendant with her brand on it, just as kind of an appreciation, you know, for lunches, just to thank you,” says Howard. “I don’t know what else I could have done that would have meant more to her, just the way she acted when she got it.” The sterling silver pendant would become an heirloom the for the entire family to treasure.
“She wore it quite often, and we actually thought it looked so good on her that we buried her with that pendant. She got to take Howard’s work with her,” Greg says.
Mark counts Howard as a true silver artist. He believes the feelings that weren’t shared verbally were shared through acts of kindness and regard.
“With that pin, that meant a lot to her, and it meant a lot to us,” says Mark. “We knew how much he cared.” While the actual pendant rests with Nan, a portrait of she and Henry hangs in the Marketing Center at GAR. In the painting, none other than a genuine Howard Fehlman piece graces her necklace.
“I walk past that portrait every day,” says Greg.
Katie is 26 years old, married and living in Texas. Howard is 68 years old and starting to admit that clipping sale cattle for six or more months out of the year is more of a young man’s game.
He’s not calling it quits, just yet. The love of the game is still very alive. “I’m not saying 100 percent I’ll go back to Gardiner’s this spring. But I’m not saying I won’t just yet,” he makes clear.
Kati has a flourishing silversmithing business called KT Silver Works. It’s pretty easy to figure out how she got started down that path.
Howard is ready to do some more smithing himself. If you’re in the market for some genuine silver spurs, you may want to check out Howard’s Skull Spur Company.
Deb manages around 200 head of ewes. “She’s a sheep lady,” smiles Howard. Between the silver and the sheep, there’s plenty of work at home to keep Howard company.
A 30+ year relationship is something to be admired. Howard’s way of doing his job will never be matched. Mark describes Howard as a quiet producer. One who is steadfast and loyal. One who is efficient with his words.
“He just didn’t need a lot of guidance. He knew what to do, and so, he went and did it. We trusted him, and he helped us.
“It’s been a great relationship, a mutual relationship, but based on need and trust, and we want to honor him,” says Mark.
Howard Fehlman has been clipping Gardiner Angus Ranch cattle for more than 30 years. He was clipping other sale and show cattle before that. Here are some of his hacks to make a tough job a little easier:
What’s the trick to clipping cattle?
“Make every move count! Have a process and do the same thing every time, in the same order.”
What’s your favorite thing about clipping cattle?
“Of course, we get to see lots of different kinds of country. We get to see a lot of really good people around the country. You know, it’s actually the people not so much the job that you enjoy doing.”
What do you dislike most about clipping cattle?
“Wind.”
“Nobody likes hair in their mouth and their eyes and their nose. Although, sometimes when the weather’s kind of nasty and the wind’s blowing pretty bad, you get more done just because everybody keeps their head down and their mouth shut.”
What differences do you notice between different breeds?
“Black hair is finer. Hereford hair is all heavier and coarser, and white hair is harder to cut than red hair.”
How often do you sharpen your blades?
“It just depends on where you’re at and how many head you’re doing a day. We sharpen our own blades, sometimes twice a day, sometimes once.”
How often do you buy a new pair of clippers?
“I buy a new pair every year before Gardiner’ s, and keep 5-6 sets running as well.”

At Gardiner Angus Ranch, we receive visitors from a wide range of places. While most of the folks who visit come from within the United States, it's not uncommon for groups from Mexico, Canada, South America or even Australia to stop in; however, guests from Europe are much rarer.
In the summer of 2023, a group of cattle breeders from Germany and Switzerland spent the day with Greg touring the ranch. Amongst these guests was a German cattleman by the name of Bernhard Delle. So, when Megan and I visited Germany this summer, it seemed only right to pay Herr Delle a visit in return!
Bernhard Delle, along with his two sons Michael and Martin, own and operate Donaumoos Angus and Hotel Gasthof Sonne in the village of Gundelfingen an der Donau. Each member of the family plays an important part in this fully farm-to-table business. When he’s not away visiting customers, Bernhard can be found on the farm, charting the mating decisions, tagging calves and feeding the herd. Martin starts his days well before sunrise in the butcher shop, preparing the meats that they use in the hotel restaurant or sell in local famer’s markets. If he’s not in the shop in Gundelfingen, you can expect to find Martin manning one of the mobile stores. Michael, a chef who has spent time in the kitchens of two and three Michelin Star restaurants across Europe, oversees the hotel restaurant. It’s here that the hard work and
discipline of the Delle family is on full display for the customers.
Gundelfingen an der Donau is a small village of roughly 8,000 people. It rests almost directly between the larger cities of Munich and Stuttgart in southern Germany. With several industrial hubs nearby, and Legoland just a short 20-minute drive to the south, the Delle family’s hotel and restaurant has become a destination for holiday travelers and industrial executives alike. Everything served is produced locally, either by the Delle family themselves or by other local farmers and businesses. Whether it’s the vegetables that can be seen growing in the fields on the drive in, the cheese from local dairies, or the beer that is produced in the brewery only a mile away from the restaurant, it all comes from Gundelfingen an der Donau. But the thing that keeps people coming through the doors day after day is the beef.
Decades ago, Bernhard set out to create the type of cattle that would deliver a consistently exceptional experience for his guests. With this direct-toconsumer mindset, he has set himself apart from other cattle producers in the area. For nearly 30 years, he has been collecting carcass ultrasounds on his
cattle, something very few other cattle producers in Germany do. Since the European Union (EU) and Germany have no central association to handle such things, Bernhard relied on the AberdeenAngus Association of the UK to interpret the data. After Brexit, this became a challenge, and Bernhard pressured the German Angus Association (whose database only tracks measurements for birth weight, weaning weight, and yearling weight) to expand to a more complete data set. Alas, to no avail, he now works with the Irish Aberdeen-Angus Association in Ireland. He uses the data he collects from ultrasounds (and in more
recent years from genomic testing) to choose which bulls and females to keep and which to harvest for the restaurant. With his progressive breeding selection, he has created a herd full of quality that his neighbors have taken notice of. Bernhard’s discipline and focus on quality and endproduct merit has enabled him to sell bulls and semen across Europe and supply his family-owned food service businesses with high quality beef.
It’s no secret the EU is very restrictive in regulating cattle imports, making it a challenge for breeders like Bernhard to access the right
genetics. Bernhard has been able to navigate these obstacles, and currently has two Gardiner Angus Ranch bulls in service: one a son of GAR Transcendent and one a son of GAR Kansas. These bulls, along with a pool of females sired by GAR Kansas, are keeping Bernhard’s program moving in the right direction.
Demand for quality beef is universal. Customers like Bernhard Delle reinforce our commitment to making beef better by continuing to focus on multi-trait excellence for all the traits of economic importance.

Cattle disease traceability is an important component in the overall biosecurity of the U.S. beef cattle industry, playing a significant role in resuming and maintaining commerce in the event of a disease outbreak. The development of a cattle disease traceability system has risen to one of the top priorities in the industry throughout multiple segments of the beef value chain as we witnessed other proteins deeply impacted by disease outbreaks and market disruption.
To address this industry-wide priority, U.S. CattleTrace was established from a collaborative effort of traceability programs across the U.S.
The system for individual animal disease traceability is complex and must be implemented prior to a disease outbreak to be effective. To be successful, the process for cattle producers must be simple, fast and affordable. Proactive participation in U.S. CattleTrace enables producers to be at the forefront of this industry-driven initiative and influence the future of an expanded traceability system in the U.S. beef cattle industry. The purpose-built infrastructure of this system has the potential to open doors to new value-added opportunities in the beef supply chain, including but not limited to: inventory management, animal health management, operational efficiencies, and enhanced domestic and international trade.
In order to protect the U.S. share of the protein market from the potential impact of a disease event, cattle identification and traceability needs to be enacted, enhanced and further developed using electronic I.D. and electronic transfer of data. U.S. CattleTrace is focused on developing a voluntary national traceability system to include all cattle and complement the current USDA regulation s. For this to be successful it will require all stakeholders, which includes producers, suppliers, service providers, packers, retailers, along with state and federal animal health officials to collectively collaborate and support disease traceability.
The goal is to build a system that is recognized as the nationally significant animal disease traceability system by all domestic and foreign markets. The U.S. CattleTrace disease traceability system strives to be equitable to all industry segments and must be industry-driven and managed by a producer board of directors to ensure data privacy and protection.
To develop and manage a nationally significant, robust and globally accepted voluntary animal disea se traceability system for all cattle entering commerce through an industry led, sustainable, non-profit private enterprise in order to protect the nation’s herd and U.S. share of the protein market with as little disruption to day- to-day operations as possible.
To be a producer-driven and national leader in animal disease traceability, providing a data management system for rapid animal disease response that is fully accepted by U.S producers and global consumers.
Recently, we lost a great personal friend, a great industry leader and an example to us all about what it means to be a compassionate, empathetic, intelligent, fair and curious human being. Greg never stopped doing. To his friends, he was always there. To the industry, he was always there. To his family, he was always there. We will miss our friend and colleague, Greg Henderson.
