The Distinguished Citizen “Good Scout” Award

The Distinguished Citizen “Good Scout” Award is presented to community leaders who exemplify in their daily lives the ideals of the Boy Scouts of America as expressed in the Scout Law and Scout Oath. The recipients are chosen for their outstanding service as evidenced by the interest and leadership they have provided to many worthwhile organizations, as well as the respect and esteem in which they are held by their colleagues.

The Scout Law

A Scout is: Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, and Reverent

The Scout Oath

On my honor, I will do my best, to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; to help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.

History of the “Good Scout” Award Statue

The Good Scout Award statuette is patterned after the statue of a Scout that stands before both the Loren S. Riggins, Jr., Scout Resource Center in Millville and the Rowan Scout Resource Center in Westampton. Here is the story behind the sculpture and its significance in Scouting History.

The sculptor was Dr. R. Tait McKenzie. In 1914 at the request of Dr. Charles D. Hart, President of the then Philadelphia Council, Boy Scouts of America, McKenzie created a statuette of the “Ideal Boy Scout.” His model, selected in a competition of Scout parades, was 12 year-old Franklin Williamson Hoover. Ten bronze 18 inch-high statuettes were cast as part of the Boy Scout Friends of Scouting Program. The edition was closed and Dr. McKenzie presented the copyright to the Philadelphia Council.

Plaster, bronze and epoxy reproductions were sold, beginning in 1916. Later, smaller copies, suitable for desk ornaments, were made available and are highly popular. In 1930, when the Philadelphia Council moved from 916 Walnut Street to 22nd and Winter Streets, it was hoped Dr. McKenzie would create a life-size statue to stand before the new building. He obliged, not by reproducing the small figure, but with a restudied statue with many changes, incorporating the new Scouting insignia.

Scout Douglas Shannon was the “Model in Chief” with Scout Joseph Straub in reserve, but several other Scouts also served as models for head, body and various detailed studies. The statue was unveiled June 12, 1937, Dr. McKenzie making the presentation address. Many life-sized copies are exhibited throughout the United States and in other countries around the Scouting world.

Garden State Council presents “The Ideal Boy Scout Statue” to the Distinguished Citizen because it embodies the meaning of Scouting found in the Scout Oath and Law. These same principles are found in this year’s honorees.

Scout Speaker

Zachary DuFault, Scouts BSA Troop 73

Zachary started his Scouting journey as a Cub Scout before advancing to Scouts BSA with Troop 73 in West Cape May, N.J. He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout at 16 years old with completion of the Cape May County United States Flag Retirement Ceremony Station at Cape May County Park South. For this project he raised over $20,000 selling memorial bricks and benches, that he built into the project. Zachary wanted a place that the “United States Flag could be retired in a dignified and respectful manner by local organizations, school, churches, and Scout Troops.” Zachary enjoys working with Scouts and youth of other organizations by taking them to the ceremony station and educating them on the proper way to retire a flag as well as the reasons why it should be done. Zachary received the 2022 American Legion New Jersey Eagle Scout of the Year award, The New Jersey Vietnam Veteran’s Distinguished Student of the Year, and The Glenn and Belinda Adams Garden State Eagle Scout of the Year award.

Zachary graduated from Lower Cape May Regional High School in June of 2022 with Magna Cum Laude honors. While attending high school, Zachary held dual enrollment at Atlantic Cape Community College where he is eligible to graduate in May, at 17 years old, with honors. Zachary will continue his education, focusing on Math & Accounting, at Rowan University with a full educational scholarship under the New Jersey Stars program.

Zachary continues to give back to his community through volunteer work and peer tutoring at school. He enjoys esports, cooking, 3-D puzzles, anime, painting, music, and graphic art.

With over 30 years of experience in the flooring industry, Maryanne Adams became the President & CEO of Avalon Flooring in 2008. She built Avalon Flooring to be the 8th largest flooring retailer in the U.S. with her dynamic can-do attitude and loyal employees by her side. As an employee-owned organization (ESOP), Maryanne has been instrumental in leading the growth of the company into 17 retail locations across PA, DE & NJ. Leading with a culture that focuses on employees first and a leadership style focused on not being afraid of change and finding non-typical solutions when issues arise, she has molded Avalon Flooring into what it is today.

Maryanne is devoted to both Avalon Flooring and to mentoring the next generation of leaders within the industry. Giving back to the community was instilled in her by their founder John Millar, who passed away unexpectedly in 2008. Avalon is actively involved with American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, Make a Wish Foundation, and the Avalon Flooring Fund, which assists Avalon employees in financial need.

She has co-chaired the Richard Stockton College Scholarship Benefit Gala and served as a past co-chair for the South Jersey Chapter “Go Red for Women” event. Avalon also participates with many local charities at each location. Within Avalon Flooring, she mentors and nurtures employees to become

masters in their roles and primarily fills leadership roles with existing employees. She has become a voice for women and independent retailers alike. In an industry largely populated by males, Maryanne Adams is a champion for women and an example of fearless leadership.

Recipient: George Robinson III

Born and raised in Flourtown PA and spent my weekends and summers in Ocean City, N.J., where I started my boat maintenance business when I was 15. I attended college at the University of Delaware Valley with a focus on Food Science. Upon graduation I immediately went to work in the food industry for a company related to the commercial production of ingredients used to speed up the production of breads. During my time at Caravan Products in Totowa, N.J., I held the position of Quality Control Specialist, then moved into Research & Development Specialist. There I held responsibility for scientific analysis and function of high-performance commercial bakery ingredients.

I soon thereafter joined the family business: Ottens Flavors in Philadelphia. From 1988 to 1997, I held the position of Procurement and Operations Director. From 1997 to May 2015, I served as President of Ottens Flavors, where I was responsible for overall performance and profitability of the $60M corporation with 160 employees and sales in 30 countries.

During my years in the food industry, I held the following board positions on distinguished industry associations.

• 2002 – 2015: Board of Governors – Flavor Extract Manufacturers Association.

• 2012-2013: President Flavor Extract Manufacturers

Association

• 1990 – 2005: Board of Directors National Association of Flavors and Food Ingredient Systems

• 2002 – 2003: President, National Association of Flavors and Food Ingredients Systems

• 2005 – Current: Board of Officers, Ocean City Marlin & Tuna Club.

As owner and president of South Jersey Yacht Sales since 2017, I am extremely proud to represent New Jersey and the surrounding regions as a dealer for Albemarle, Invincible, Jupiter Marine, Yellowfin Yachts Valhalla Boat Works and Viking. These renowned brands represent the highest quality, innovative, leading-edge sportfishing boats available on the market today. All of these brands are commonly found in the winner’s circle time and time again at the largest, most prestigious billfish tournaments in the world. As an avid third-generation angler and boater for well over 40 years, I work to bring to the marine industry a passion and desire to make our friends and customers their next purchase an enjoyable experience and is also eager to share his insights on boats, fishing and destinations.

In October 2020, in order to compliment the yacht sales business, we acquired what is now South Jersey Yacht Sales and Service Center and Chart House Marine Electronics and Outfitting

Garden State Council Impact

The vision of the Garden State Council is to offer exciting, fun and values-based experiences of the highest caliber to the greatest number of youth possible.

The mission is to deliver the highest quality youth program of character development and leadership training, and to prepare young people to make ethical decisions, so they can reach their full potential and better serve their family, community and country.

Scouting was put to the test over three years when Tufts University worked with youth to measure character attributes of both Scouts and non-Scouts. Funded by the John Templeton Foundation, nearly 1,800 Cub Scouts and nearly 400 non-Scouts under the age of 12 were measured through both interviews and survey data. The findings are represented in the bar graph, below, and show the positive impact of Scouting.

It costs the Garden State Council about $200 per member annually to deliver Scouting to the young people in the six-plus counties we serve. We invite you to consider an annual gift of support to keep Scouting the most costeffective, comprehensive youth development program on the planet. This QR code will take you to our Friends
