WELCOME TO THE

10th Anniversary Season winner

arts hub 2011

award for contribution to the australian arts scene

10 long seasons ago, a semi–trailer pulled up to a park in the East End and dropped off a container. From the container came a tent… And into the tent came some performers and crew. They made a home and they made some shows. Tickets were ripped and an audience joined the ride. 10 strong seasons on, we’ve made the park our home, and many things have grown. In 2012 we welcome an extraordinary collection of artists to celebrate our 10th anniversary season. The international sensation SOAP - THE SHOW, the exquisite voices of THE LOVEBIRDS, the freakishly adorable cabaret artists from La Clique in LA SOIREE, the sell-out sensation of our 2011 season CANTINA and the stars of Good News World, comic sensations SAMMY J & RANDY, just to name a few.

We also welcome a stunning new venue, The Vagabond. Built in Holland, but designed and inspired here in Adelaide during our 2011 season. In all, 103 different shows will be performed in 11 different venues... and the audience… verging on close to a million. Yes, some things have definitely changed, but at the heart of it all, one important thing remains the same… you, our audience. You found your corner of The Garden. And you made it grow. Thank you and welcome to the 10th anniversary season of The Garden of Unearthly Delights! Here’s to the next 10 years!

Michelle, Andrew, Scott & Sarah.

the Lovebirds Direct from their world premiere at the Melbourne International Arts Festival. The LoveBirds, destined to be a Fringe favourite, are set to inhabit the vibrant and luscious surrounds of The Garden of Unearthly Delights. In this exotic new breed of cabaret, these rare and illusive creatures will emerge from the foliage of their alluring, colourspeckled underworld, to share provocative, heart-warming tales of wandering souls pining for love and looking to be saved. Written and devised by the award-winning singer, cabaret artist and dancer, Simone Page Jones, The LoveBirds pays homage to 1930’s Bohemia and psychedelic, sexually ambiguous San Francisco. Performed by a collection of wayward cabaret darlings with exquisite voices and spectacular plumage, The LoveBirds are backed by their live band with an original score, lead by the exceptionally talented Matthew Carey. Long before appearing on TV (The Project, Talkin’ ‘bout Your Generation), Charlie was touring internationally, winning awards and selling-out houses. He returned to the stage last year with this cracker of a show…

Multi award winning Canadian musician Harry Manx melds the sounds of East and West ‘creating musical short stories that wed the blues with the depth of classical Indian ragas’. He has released eleven albums and created a unique sound that is hard to forget and deliciously addictive to listen to.

Tex Perkins and the Band of Gold originally came together as a unit performing in the hit stage concert ‘The Man In Black’. These kindred musical spirits reinterpret alt-folkcountry favourites written by songsmiths and performers who lived and are loved for the music they made.

Armed with just a microphone, Thum pushes the limits of the human voice to create a mind blowing soundscape of impossible beats, phenomenal sounds and an entire big band’s worth of instruments, for his highly anticipated, solo debut. Thum has done more than most, from winning team battles at the inaugural Beatboxing World Championships, to performing on New York’s Broadway, fronting sold out shows in Sydney, London and Berlin and even sharing a stage with hip-hop legends such as Afrika Bambaataa and Grandmaster Flash.

It was in this fertile garden, bustling with imagination, the seeds of all my carnival dreams took root and sprouted. Hot summer nights mixing the seedy and the sweet. As a much a playground for Carnies and Showfolk as for Townies and Crowds. Inside the world’s Tiniest Top was where I first sat on a stack of cans and compelled by the sheer possibilities all around me I urged my crowd to follow their dreams. The Garden is a place where dreams become more real than reality itself.

The Garden of Unearthly Delights is a beautiful and brilliant thing. The Garden has consistently invented new ways of delighting us over the past 10 years and is now firmly established right at the heart of the Adelaide Fringe.

For a Hedgehog to stay warm, it must endure pain through physical contact. For a hedgehog to stay unharmed, it must choose loneliness.

A mix of chaos, comedy and knockabout slapstick in one big acrobatic debacle for all ages! Off the back of a whirlwind European festival tour; Tom Flanagan, larger-than-life energetic star of Tom Tom Crew and Circus Oz returns to The Garden for his solo debut.

The Hedgehog Dilemma

Pretty heavy stuff for a tiny hedgehog to deal with. Then Felicity discovered this was an analogy for human intimacy. “What kind of hedgehog am I?” she pondered...and then she wrote this show. Seen on Thank God You’re Here, Spicks and Specks and in the Working Dog film Any Questions For Ben?

“Ten years since Adelaide was first introduced to The Garden Of Unearthly Delights... Amazing! The Garden has, to me, become a destination in its own right. Not just for its wondrous venues and performance programs, but for its total Fringeness!! A place to see or be seen. A place that confronts, delights, challenges, entertains, diverts, elates, amuses, terrifies, enchants, bemuses, and for some weak souls like me, dissipates... There is no venue in Adelaide that so captures the essence of our Fringe Festival as does The Garden. Here’s to the next ten... and beyond!”

“It started with just one Famous Spiegeltent in 2000 and was joined by an Umbrella Revolution Big Top in 2002. The energy, love and vision for The Garden of Unearthly Delights has not waived. It is a triumph of creative perseverance and passion. Some of my best memories and unrepeatable stories are planted in the early days of the Garden of Unearthly Delights.”

“The Garden has been a genuine highlight of my touring schedule over the last ten years! This year, with me will be my delicious trio Elixir and we can’t wait again to add this night to our many wonderful memories of The Garden of Unearthly Delights! A big ENORMOUS congratulations to the unearthly crew who make this such a wonderful, eclectic programme each year, celebrating our artistic diversity and generally all that is awesome and a little bit freaky!”

Katie Noonan Artist

“Together, over the years, both the Fringe and the Garden have enjoyed amazing growth and success. Adelaide audiences flock to the Garden to enjoy their favourite and much loved artists or to discover thrilling new acts. I had the joy of being at the Edinburgh Fringe watching a sold out performance of Tom Tom Crew, a celebration of Australian creativity and talent, and feeling so proud knowing that it had originated at the Garden of Unearthly Delights. Brilliant! Raise your glasses to the next 10 years!

STUFF THAT’S GOOD TO KNOW

While The Garden is constantly working on ways to improve the site and its access, the parkland itself offers some challenges. In places the pathways are steep and consistently so. A number of venues in The Garden are antique wooden theatres which cannot be modified. Where possible, paths and ramps have been installed to improve access to the site and its venues.
