UK exporters celebrate 60 years of support from Gardenex on its diamond anniversary The Gardenex trade association was formed in 1961 to help and support British gardening manufacturers to open up new business abroad and today celebrates its Diamond Anniversary with this special publication. Over the 60 years since it was established, the Federation of Garden & Leisure Manufacturers Ltd (to give its full title) has worked closely with government, industry, show organisers, press, suppliers and international buyers. It delivers a range of export and business services that have evolved as the industry has evolved, to meet the needs of its members today and deliver new export sales across the globe. The team at the Federation has also changed over the years; but everyone who has worked for the membership has worked tirelessly to help companies large and small to secure new international business. The board of the Federation would like to pay tribute to founding secretary Yvonne Slade and her assistant Kate Norris, to team member Theresa Swann who is sadly no longer with us, to valued former colleagues and to our current team – Charlie Parker, Eleanor Wigram, Pat Flynn, Emma Brazier, Katie-Mai Smith, Lydia Stubbs, Kate Smith, Glennis Theobald and Vanessa Statham. Mention must also be made of the many leading figures in our industry who have given their time, advice and expertise over the past 60 years to support the Federation and its work; we really appreciate all our directors’ and members’ contributions and support for the Federation over the 60 years since its inception.

Gardenex is often called upon to give media interviews. Here, Charlie Parker provides his views for a TV film crew at Global Pet Expo, Orlando in 2016. Leading the Federation team is Amanda Sizer Barrett, who moved from business journalism to take on the role of the Director General in 1992. Under her leadership, the Federation introduced a step change in its business services. These have included launching our Meet the Buyer events, now adopted by many other associations; establishing our export information helpline; undertaking tailored market research for markets across the world, and introducing a comprehensive international publicity programme for our members and their products. The association has also created unique promotional and exhibition opportunities at venues in countries from Austria to Japan, launched regular international retail and export bulletins, substantially extended its annual programme of trade information stands and exhibitor groups at trade shows around the world, organises international trade conferences and seminars; and offers many other business services and benefits. The Federation also launched PetQuip, the
trade association for the pet care product sector which provides similar services to those of Gardenex to UK companies in this expanding business sector. During Amanda’s tenure, the Federation has also taken on the running of the secretariats for the Commercial Horticultural Association
and then GIMA, the UK garden industry body, among many other initiatives over the years. For her work in promoting and developing exports at the Federation, Amanda was awarded an MBE by her Majesty the Queen. The Federation has also been proud to work in partnership with the UK government on various export programmes and initiatives over the years; the Federation has been accredited by the Department for International Trade to deliver export services to UK manufacturers and achieves the highest standards of service for this. HISTORY OF THE FEDERATION In fact, it was in 1961 that Gardenex was established, following a request to the then Board of Trade for financial assistance towards exhibiting abroad. Once the government had agreed, the renowned gardening expert and correspondent Mr Roy Hay and representatives from interested companies formed a not-for-profit association to help British companies to export. Its initial undertaking was to organise a British group participation in the 1962 Valencienne Floralies, where the group won prize money of £3,000, which literally provided ‘seedbed’ funding for the association! In the same year the Board of Trade offered the first ‘joint venture’ support for the Cologne Hardware Fair for the following year. Other ventures and more prize money followed, then in 1964 the association put on its first mini exhibition in a Paris hotel, plus joint ventures in Cologne, Brussels, Bulawayo and to the National Hardware Show then in New York. The Federation continued its development of services with a Register of Agents and Distributors, which has grown to become the 10,000-plus exclusive international buyer database, which member companies can access to help germinate new export sales today. Further ventures were organised and the first group of international buyers was invited to visit the UK on an ‘inward mission’ to meet UK garden product suppliers. In 1976, previous discussions on the possibility of establishing a UK exhibition came to fruition when it was decided to co-operate with fellow association LOFA to start GLEE, the International Garden & Leisure Exhibition, to be held at the newly opened National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham. More events and joint ventures plus inward missions and mini exhibitions abroad were organised and participation in these increased. Likewise, the GLEE exhibition also grew and international buyers started visiting the show, via inward missions organised by Gardenex who ran the International Visitors’ Centre to provide buyers with business services, interpreters, refreshments and networking opportunities. decided it was time to retire and the board agreed to appoint a full-time Director General; and appointed Amanda Sizer Barrett. The task was large, for the board had spent many committee meetings putting forward ideas and suggestions on what the new DG should and would deliver! Faced with this plethora of ideas and proposals, it was agreed that firstly a survey of the membership should be carried out and that the results would form the framework for a new business plan formulated by the DG. The outcome was the decision to introduce the comprehensive range of tailored business services, export advice, technical information, international market research, export contacts and the annual international events programme that the Gardenex team delivers to member companies today. Those services are now also utilised by
the Federation’s PetQuip membership and the administrative team also supports the memberships of the CHA and GIMA. As well as appointing the Director General to put the new business plan into place and upgrade or introduce new initiatives and business support, the non-executive board of Gardenex made the decision with LOFA to dispose of its shareholding in the Glee trade exhibition to a professional trade show organising group, while agreeing to continue to support the show. This decision enabled the association to purchase its own freehold headquarters, which are the offices for the Federation’s team and for the CHA and GIMA associations. Over the years the White House has welcomed member company representatives and international buyers from many countries to meet together in the appropriate setting of

In the past couple of years, the Federation and its team and the gardening and leisure and pet care industries as a whole have been forced to tackle multiple challenges that the founding members of the association could not have envisaged: the UK decision to leave the European Union and the coronavirus pandemic. Throughout these uniquely uncertain times, the Federation’s team has been stepping up to provide help and support and to continue to promote our UK sectors internationally. We have been providing invaluable information on the implications of Brexit, technical advice, interpreting new regulations, seeking answers to exporters’ new challenges and highlighting business solutions. We have taken our popular Meet the International Buyer events successfully online, we have promoted information about our members and product innovations to international trade buyers and press when exhibitions and travel were impossible. Now we are able to re-introduce our international trade exhibition programme, our UK exhibitor groups, industry information stands, conferences and seminars and our inperson meet the buyer events. We look forward to supporting both our long-term exporters and our young innovative companies to meet the demand from UK and international consumers hungry to enjoy the new normality of enhancing their gardens and treasuring their families and pets. Now most diamond anniversary events are to celebrate 60 years of marriage; so not very appropriate on this occasion, you would assume. But thinking about it, what we are celebrating today, in Gardenex’s 60th anniversary, does have its parallels – after all, we are celebrating 60 years of marrying together the right suppliers and buyers and the right products and customers, bringing contentment to both parties in the relationship! So we would like you all to join us in celebrating 60 years of successful partnership between British companies and international customers, and to Gardenex and PetQuip in continuing to deliver its role as a successful international business matchmaker!

Gardenex leads the export path for UK garden and leisure firms The UK, well known around the world as the home of gardening, welcomes international visitors to renowned horticultural events and attractions such as the Chelsea Flower Show, Kew Gardens and the Eden Project. Many of the world’s most successful companies benefit from the UK’s passion for gardening. Our companies’ innovation, unparalleled technical know-how coupled with our commitment to quality service which can serve all the world’s markets, enables our member firms to deliver successful garden products and solutions to all corners of the globe. The team at the UK’s Gardenex association is proud to work with many of these innovative companies. Annual sales of garden products are estimated at around £7 billion and despite the recent pandemic, our sector has actually seen growth in the past two years. While leaving the European Union has been a challenge, British companies have worked hard to continue to provide excellent products and service to their valued customers and navigate a way through the changing export requirements. Throughout these business changes and challenges, the Gardenex team has been supporting its member companies and their international customers by providing a comprehensive helpline and business information bulletins, answering queries and disseminating all the necessary Government guidelines and links to changing legislation. We organise a range of events and seminars and our popular Meet the International Buyer sessions in the UK and online result in many satisfied members expressing their thanks. Vanessa Marshall from Wildlife World, who took part in several Meet the Buyer sessions including one with Canadian company Lee Valley, commented: “Gardenex Meet the Buyer events are always well organised and researched. Over the years, these events have introduced us to a number of valuable new customers in Europe and North America.”

Gardenex organises a range of events and services, including welcoming overseas visitors to the International Buyers’ Centre at Glee. Another happy supplier remarked: “We have attended a number of these events and have always found them to be a very useful tool for our export market. In general they are very informative and have repaid the time, effort and expense many times over.” Our international buyers also find the meetings beneficial. De Wet Coetzee from Stodels in South Africa confirmed: “these were very interesting and beneficial meetings.” Gardenex also organises a broad range of events including UK exhibitor groups at international trade shows such as Spoga+Gafa and the National Hardware Show in the USA. Over the years many exhibitors have found both the service, organisation and promotional support provided by Gardenex has boosted their export development and given a springboard to operating globally. Various comments attest to the support given: “We spoke to over 40 new contacts covering 24 countries, thank you for your great help.” “We met with buyers from more than 25 countries including the USA, Chile, South Africa and Hong Kong. We have already signed a deal for our products to be distributed in South Africa and we’ve received a sizable first order. The Gardenex team was extremely helpful and always at hand with any queries we had. It was great to have the support and made the show set-up a lot easier than if we were on our own.”
Gardenex also provides wide-ranging business services including a product sourcing service for international buyers, a commercial and research help-line, international trade conferences and business seminars plus an international public relations programme. The Gardenex team works with its member companies throughout their export development; and there’s no better endorsement for our services than from our member companies: Long-term Gardenex member company Haws Watering Cans confirms: “Haws Watering Cans has been part of Gardenex for over 15 years. In that time our export sales have grown and grown. This has been with the help of overseas trade shows and ‘meet the buyers’ events which we have attended. Events that make a difference Gardenex and PetQuip organise and host a number of prestigious events each year. Here are three key occasions.
Meet the International Buyer events are held at the Federation’s HQ in Brasted, Kent, and also at major trade shows in the UK, including GLEE and PATS (below).
Matching buyers with suppliers
The promotion of trade between buyers and suppliers, both internationally and in the UK, is a prime objective for Gardenex and PetQuip. The associations target key distributors and wholesalers, pet retail chains and independents, garden centres, DIY chains, mail order and internet retailers to meet with UK suppliers in a relaxed environment. Flying buyers in from Europe, the Middle East and the USA, the associations also give them the opportunity to visit UK garden centres and pet stores the day before they meet the suppliers. The store visits result quite often in identifying yet more suppliers with new products, in addition to the scheduled meetings on the following day. Meet the International Buyer days are very
focussed – the buyers get to see around a dozen UK suppliers on one day and the 25-minute faceto-face meetings allow for a good introduction to the company and their products. Alongside the one-to-one meetings with buyers, the suppliers have the chance to attend informal round-table seminars and meet with export service providers, and the Gardenex and PetQuip team. For UK suppliers the event is a rare opportunity to meet key buyers, to put a face to a name and start to build a rapport, present samples/company brochures and to make a presentation as to why their product should be stocked. The suppliers taking part receive profiles of the participating buyers prior to when a meeting
takes place and can then apply for attendance. Many buyers specify their areas of product interest at the outset so suppliers know where they stand. Buyers receive details of the suppliers applying for meetings and have the chance to check out their websites, enabling them to decide if a meeting is worthwhile. So both sides know something of each other’s business and the buyer knows they are meeting the relevant contact. This is particularly important if the buyer is from overseas as not all contacts are able to discuss exports in detail. During the Covid-19 pandemic Gardenex and PetQuip held virtual sessions, which proved very popular, and these will continue where buyers request them.
PetQuip Awards The PetQuip Awards, which recognise innovation and excellence in the UK pet industry, are celebrating their 10th anniversary. The awards have become an established and prestigious event in the calendar with companies acknowledging that winning such an accolade can give their sales a terrific boost, whether they are retailers or suppliers. “Many of the British firms who have entered in the past have reported on the value of the awards as an aid to boosting their businesses. The awards have helped in cementing company credibility in the marketplace and led to numerous promotional opportunities. The popularity of the awards has resulted in the organisers of PATS welcoming the event as part of their plans for the Telford show,” said organiser Pat Flynn, PetQuip’s Trade Association Manager.

Mastering international trade The Future for International Trade Conference – organised jointly by Gardenex, PetQuip and home enhancement association BHETA – is a very popular and well attended event. Following Brexit there is a real thirst for information on how best to negotiate new regulations, and this top-level export conference helps delegates to understand what action they need to take to become successful in international markets
Speakers on trends, logistics and compliance pool their experience to deliver the latest facts, opinion and advice about exporting. The conference delegates also hear incisive case studies from some of the UK’s most successful exporters within the home improvement, garden and pet sectors. There are opportunities for Q&As with the speakers and delegates can obtain individually tailored advice from a selection of experts.
The most recent conference took place in March 2022 and the event was hailed as being a huge success. The mood was summed up by Graham Robinson, head of operations and procurement at Wildlife World, who said: “I thought the presenters, key speakers and case studies were invigorating, knowledgeable and engaging. We certainly learned some valuable lessons and it was nice to know that the message we’ve been telling our employees, is what the current landscape looks like.” Nina Best-Bray, international sales manager for Burgon & Ball, commented: “I found the conference incredibly helpful and interesting. It was great to hear from all the expert speakers in the various sectors and I found the case studies to be particularly insightful. The event also provided an ideal opportunity to network with delegates from other companies and speak with members of the trade associations.” And Jonathan Stobart, managing director of Smart Garden Products, added: “I thought the conference was a great platform for people to get an overview of the challenges facing companies and the many opportunities available to them. It was also fascinating to hear the different views of how businesses are approaching international markets.”
celebrate 10th anniversary The presentation ceremony and official awards dinner takes place each year on the first night of PATS Telford, the international trade event for the pet industry held in the UK. The categories include the Theresa Swann Trophy for Exporter of the Year, and two new ‘eco’ awards – Celebrating Green and Organic, and a Sustainability award – as well as awards for new products, business of the year and for lifetime achievement UK Pet Retailer of the Year and International Retailer/Wholesaler/ Distributor of the Year are also presented on the night. Entries are invited each year from March through to June with judging by independent specialists taking place in August. Winners are only announced on the night and not before, adding to the excitement at PATS.

Department for International Trade As Government Accredited Trade Organisations, Gardenex and PetQuip work closely with the Department for International Trade (DIT) to help member companies in our sectors to export. Our focus is to provide information and services specific to the garden and pet sectors. But our members should be aware of some of the key general services available to exporters provided by the government. If you are not already working with DIT and making the most of the services and funding opportunities that may be available, you are strongly advised to get to know your local international trade advisor (ITA). https://www. great.gov.uk/campaigns/local-export-support/ details the kind of support that is available to exporters and https://www.great.gov.uk/ contact/office-finder/ is the page where you can find your local International Trade team in English regions, as well as the relevant contacts in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Local International Trade Advisors will be able to advise what advice and funding is available for companies in your area (this can vary from region to region) and which schemes might most benefit you. A summary of the DIT’s key services is available on https://www.great.gov.uk/services/ and https://www.great.gov.uk/advice/ is the starting point for general exporting guidance on developing an export plan, documentation and logistics, export finance and much more… Internationalisation Funding - an opportunity for SMEs to bid for funding towards exhibiting at overseas trade shows and other exporting activities. The government is running an internationalisation funding scheme in England until March 2023. One-off match-funded grants of between £1,000 and £9,000 are available for future activity (subject to eligibility and availability). The funding can cover a wide range of activities, but the applicants will need to contact their local DIT International Trade Advisor to check if the funding is available in their area. A pilot funding scheme, UK Tradeshow Programme is currently being offered to some UK companies that have not exhibited at overseas trade shows previously. Export Support Service (ESS) The Export Support Service (ESS) helpline and online service is the first point of contact for UK businesses to obtain answers to questions about exporting their products or services to customers in Europe. It is a free government service run by the Department for International Trade. It can also help you navigate other government services, so you can find further support about trading with Europe or other countries, such as DIT’s International Trade Advisors and the Export Academy. ESS currently focuses on questions you have about trading with Europe but it is planned to cover more global markets. PATS is the place to see the Best of British PATS, the UK’s number one pet industry exhibition, celebrated its 25th show at Sandown Park, Surrey, in March 2022 as the event continues to go from strength to strength. The huge boom in pet ownership during pandemic lockdowns means the pet market is very buoyant, resulting in huge demand for new products and services. Pet care suppliers and manufacturers welcome the opportunity to launch new ranges at trade shows like PATS. There are two shows each year – PATS Sandown in March and PATS Telford in September. When the exhibitions were launched in 2009 the organisers’ goal was to provide an event where the pet industry could come together as one, under one roof, to share knowledge, experience and new ideas. The industry thrives on the face-to-face interaction between suppliers and retailers, and a forum like PATS, where new products can be showcased, touched and examined, is a real must. The PATS New Product Showcase is a great opportunity for visiting retailers to see everything that is new and decide what to stock for the coming season. It is designed to help visitors locate the latest and most exciting products coming into the pet industry, as they are all gathered in one extensive display and grouped into different categories. Once a visitor has seen products they like, they then have the opportunity of visiting the stands of the manufacturers or suppliers of those items to discuss in more detail. There is an information card beside each product, giving details such as suggested retail price and where in the show you’ll find the item’s exhibitor. All entries in the Showcase are judged by a panel of independent retailers for the New Product Awards on the first morning of the show, so the results will be known and highlighted throughout the halls for the rest of the exhibition.
Winning an award can be the launch pad to huge sales. Manufacturers can be confident that successful products have a great chance of becoming bestsellers because a panel of pet retailers decides the awards. And past winners admit that it can certainly increase the profile of the items to the trade. As well as having the chance to see the latest products being launched on to the market, there is a whole host of other activities designed for retailers to grow their business.

Both PATS shows are now regarded as important international shows. “There is great interest in buying British,” said PATS organiser Gordon Thomas. “The UK pet market is the second largest in Europe and international distributors and retailers recognise that fact, and also that British companies invent and manufacture innovative new products. They want to see all the latest launches from UK companies, and they know that PATS is the best place to do that.” Gordon and his team work closely with PetQuip to ensure that both visitors and suppliers get the most benefit from the PATS exhibitions. PetQuip takes a stand at each event where its staff assist with overseas enquiries and advise exhibitors how they can export their products.

Great opportunity for international buyers
PATS is a fantastic opportunity for international buyers to discover new launches from British suppliers. Rob James, of Petwork Marketing, sources UK-manufactured products for a network of 50 stores across Spain, and he attended PATS Sandown 2022 with partner Mireia Sabate De Val, who owns Princeps de Casa pet store in central Barcelona. “It’s essential that we come to PATS because it is a great place to find products that haven’t been seen in mainland Europe,” said Rob, pictured above with Mireia. “The range of products on show is always of the highest quality. It is well worth the trip.”
