from the CEO What an exciting time

to live in the Huntsville/ Madison community!!! As we attract new residents with our economic growth, one thing to be sure is their pursuit of what is offered for their quality of life. It has been such a pleasure to host so many ‘scouting visitors’ as they come to see your Garden. I continue to marvel at what a unique place we have developed together in our short life of 30 years. But they haven’t seen anything yet!!!!

If you want to be outdoors in the winter, there’s no better place than the Garden to see the structure of the trees and shrubs as you enjoy the Lewis Birding Trail and hopefully bring your own Fido to play in the free leash zone during Beaks & Barks. Visit us on GROUNDHOG Day to see if spring is on the way with a fun afternoon lunch that you won’t want to miss. FREE for members are the Sunday afternoon Native Tree Identification classes and walks…so check those out and sign up because space is limited.

As always, the bar of expectations has been raised as we prepare for our Chinese Lantern Festival…like nothing we have ever done before!! Opening March 20, this exhibit is made by masters of the craft from Jigong, China, the center of lantern heritage. “The Wild” is a world of life-size illuminated panda bears, lions, zebras, and much more. They will be featured in 18 vignettes in various themed areas and in the evening will become even more dramatic. To completely immerse in this cultural experience, enjoy the Kung Fu show and folk art marketplace. Visit in the daytime and also enjoy the spring awakening in the Garden…like the fabulous Bush Azalea Trail and Mathews Nature Trail with buds and colorful blooms everywhere. Don’t miss a minute of the best time in the best place to be this Spring!

Exploring “The Wild” Spring Break Camps Spring Break Camp March 18-22, 2019 Kindergarten through 6th Grade

Mid-March – April We’ve planted a whopping 18,000 spring bulbs; be sure to visit when they make their stunning debut during Huntsville Blooms! Our floral displays of tulips, daffodils, dogwoods, trillium, and, of course, the over 3,000 varieties of azaleas along the Bush Azalea Trail are a must-see.

Each day will have its own theme and set of activities that tie into our Chinese Lantern Festival, The Wild. Campers will learn about different aspects of Chinese culture and the variety of animals represented in the exhibit.

Garden members, it’s that Egg-cellent time of the year with Bunny Bonanza! 10,000 eggs are stuffed with treats and scattered about the Garden. Music, games, refreshments and face painting will keep your little one busy. The Easter Bonnet Parade is always fun. Bring your cameras for a great photo with the Easter Bunny.

The hunt is broken down by age and the tickets are $5 per child plus Garden admission for any

non-members. Registration in advance is recommended to help speed the process that day.

Tickets can also be purchased at the Visitors Desk in the Guest Welcome Center.

The Mathews Nature Trail, in the center of the Garden, is a dazzling spring display of blooms starting in late February and into May. You will want to view it several times as the sequence of bloom changes daily.

garden calendar things you could or should be doing in your garden…

FEBRUARY Spray trees and shrubs with formant oil and lime sulfur to kill over-wintering insects and diseases.

Till your vegetable garden when the ground can be worked. Do not till when your soil is wet, it will ruin your soil structure.

Prune evergreen shrubs before new growth starts.

Cut back ornamental grasses to about 12”. You can also divide grasses at this time.

MARCH Apply pre-emergent herbicide for crabgrass control. Do not use weed and feed products on Bermuda or Zoysia at this time.

Fertilize fescue using one pound of nitrogen per 1000 square feet.

Be prepared to cover flowering plants like hydrangeas if a freeze threatens.

Have your soil tested. This will let you know if you need to apply lime or fertilizer.

Fertilize shrubs and trees as needed.

APRIL Come to the Plant Sale for your annual, perennials, herbs, shrubs and trees.

Experts will be on hand to help you select the right plant for the right place.

Remember that April 15 is usually that last frost/freeze date for our area.

Do not remove spring bulb foliage prematurely or next year's flower production will decline.

Two-leaf Toothwort (Cardamine diphylla), Duschman's Breeches (Dicentra cucullaria), Eastern Shooting Star (Dodecatheon meadia L.), Trout Lily (Eryhronium americanum), Hepatica (Hepatica americana), Foamflower (Tiarella cordifolia), Cranesbill (Geranium maculatum), Dwarf Crested Iris (Iris cristata), Twinleaf (Jeffersonia diphylla), Bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis), Fire Pinks (Silene virginica), Celadine Poppy (Stylophorum diphyllum), and Virginia Bluebells (Mertensia virginica) are just a few of the wonderful native wildflowers you will see on the trail.

East Asian Plant Collections

Beginning in mid-March and continuing through May, we celebrate blooms of all shapes and sizes that originate from East Asia. Alabama’s diverse variety of native plant species shares a distinct biogeographic similarity to plant species in East Asia. In fact, the two regions share more than 100 plant genera and the two floras are more alike than either is to the neighboring areas of western North America and Europe, respectively.

The 32nd annual Huntsville Botanical Garden and Garden Guild Spring Plant Sale will take place at Grisham Pavilion from April 11 to 14. The theme this year is “Gardening for Generations” because anyone can be a gardener! The Plant Sale will include geraniums, heirlooms and pass-alongs, native azaleas, wildflowers, herbs, ferns, roses, houseplants, trees and shrubs, vegetables, annuals, perennials, and more. Specialty vendors will also be present selling their wares. Plant sale hours are: April 11 to 13 - 9 to 5, April 14 - Noon to 5. (note: April 11 is Garden Members day)

THE BELTED KINGFISHER

The Belted Kingfisher is a yearround resident in Alabama and may be found in all of North America.

They are smaller than an American crow, but larger than a Red-bellied Woodpecker. One thing that is uncommon in the bird world, the male Belted Kingfisher is not as showy as the female, because he does not have the broad rusty band on his belly. They search for small fish by perching on power lines or open branches in trees near the lakes.

Sometimes they hover over the water before diving to catch small fish, minnows, and crayfish. With a large pointed beak and grey sleek body, it resembles a rocket in flight. Nests are made in 3-6 foot burrows they excavate in earthen, open banks along streams and lakes.

They are most likely to be observed around Lonnie and Little Smith Lakes and the Aquatic Garden. Most often their rattling call is heard before they are seen. The best opportunity to see them is early mornings particularly on rainy days before many visitors arrive since the birds tend to shy away from people.

What is the Chinese Lantern Festival?

It’s the Huntsville Botanical Garden’s biggest festival to date! Boasting more than 800 illuminated lantern displays of wildlife from around the world (and dinosaurs!), this festival will provide a stunning visual exhibition of Chinese art and culture. Other festival activities will include Chinese shadow puppetry, live Kung Fu and martial arts performances, and a marketplace featuring authentic Chinese folk arts and crafts.

Volunteer Renee Kump more than qualifies to shine in our Volunteer Spotlight. Her quote above expresses the ultimate definition of a satisfied and energetic Garden volunteer. However, she is unable to pinpoint her most favorite volunteer position. Everything that she participates in she loves and learns something different. From Greeter and Membership Mailings to Special Events and Education Assistant, Renee’s presence and warm personality light up the Garden and those around her. Thank you, Renee for always being here to shine and light us up!

REMEMBERING DORIS On December 1, 2018, a stainless steel kinetic sculpture

by George Sherwood was installed to memorialize Doris Dwyer Fox who passed away last spring. “Each of the curves makes its own music,” says Sherwood in describing his work. The piece was commissioned for Doris by family and friends as a way to continue to love and remember her. Doris was a longtime Garden member and a volunteer for numerous projects at the Garden, including painting the sunflowers for the Create-A-Maze in the Children’s Garden, the large fish on the Kid’s Carwash, and the adorable gnome photo-op in the Gnome Dome. Doris was an amazing artist, her creativity had no bounds. In addition to painting, she was a stained glass artist, furniture maker, gardener, seamstress, caterer, and more. The Sherwood sculpture reflects her creativity and love for family and friends.

Summer Youth Volunteer Program If you have a son or daughter between the ages of 13 and 15 who would like to have a fun and educational experience while learning more about the Garden, then the Garden Gang is the perfect summer activity!

A summer youth volunteer program, the Gang gets together each Wednesday during June and July (except July 4th week) from 8:00 AM until 2:00 PM to assist with a variety of activities, including Wacky Wednesdays, Butterfly House maintenance, summer camp for kids, and planting, weeding, watering, and mulching.

Why join? To learn new skills and gain valuable experience, fulfill community service hours, and make new friends.
