Our celebration of the wonderful wildlife that we have in the Garden starts with Beaks and Barks and a weekend of the Great Backyard Bird Count. Come learn about your local birds and how to attract them to your home. With well over a hundred species of birds, along with an array of squirrels, fox, the occasional otter, (and even the deer) they all indicate a healthy water and plant environment of which we can be proud. We invite your own four-legged beast to join in the relaxing atmosphere during February.

Then comes the true awakening of the Garden with budding everywhere. Watch the Mathews Nature Trail and Bush Azalea Trail for the first signs of activity and then the burst into magnificent color.

This then is the perfect time with a perfect setting for Nature Connects 2 with LEGO bricks. Consistent with our education programs and a strong tie to STEM initiatives, these 14 exhibits lead you through the Garden to experience and enjoy them and stimulate your own creativity.

A little less than a year ago, we found ourselves with a new beginning for the Garden, and living with new indoor and outdoor spaces. Now things have begun to settle, due to the hard work of our staff and the support of our members and volunteers. We continue to examine how we are doing virtually EVERYTHING… especially as we also look forward in May to our 30th anniversary of opening the Garden.

Visit Huntsville Botanical Garden to see these amazing sculptures made from nearly half a million LEGO® bricks by New York artist Sean Kenney. Set in 14 scenes, these sculptures engage youth and adults alike using one of the most classic toys and most popular hobbies in the world - building with LEGO® bricks. From March 9 –May 20, the Garden will also showcase hand painted wooden figure cut-outs made by the Wednesday Guys and embellished with creativity and ingenuity by local schools and their amazing students.

These are always incredibly imaginative and add a local touch to our seasonal exhibits; Building Knowledge One Block At A Time.

THE GARDEN GANG

Summer Youth Volunteer Program If you have a son or daughter between the ages of 13 and 15 who would like to have a fun and educational experience while learning more about the Garden, then The Garden Gang is the perfect summer activity!

A summer youth volunteer program, The Gang gets together each Wednesday during June and July (except July 4th week) from 8:00 AM until 2:00 PM to assist with a variety of activities including Wacky Wednesdays, Butterfly House maintenance, summer camp for kids, and planting, weeding, watering and mulching.

Volunteer Spotlight - Marsha Boyett

Docent Training

Wednesdays in Feb. » 7, 14, 21, and 28 9 AM -12 PM Sundays in Feb. » 4, 11, 18, and 25 1 PM - 4 PM Volunteer Support Room This is the perfect opportunity to play a crucial role in educating our visitors about the importance of plants, nature, and special exhibits throughout the Garden. Working with adults and children, Docents are tour guides, education assistants and Garden hosts. Our classes are informative, fun and free with no prior experience necessary.

Shuttle Driver Training Wednesday, Feb. 28 · 1 - 3 PM Volunteer Support Room

The Garden is in need of additional trained shuttle drivers in order to accommodate our increased number of guests. This is an extraordinary volunteer service while providing an informative ride for those unable to walk through the Garden. The first hour will be an instructional presentation, followed by driving the shuttle.

Galaxy of Lights’ success depends on the work of many volunteers, and this quarter’s Volunteer Spotlight shines on Marsha Boyett, Galaxy Volunteer Coordinator. In a new volunteer position for Galaxy, Marsha accepted the challenge and did an outstanding job. She made sure that each Galaxy night team was well staffed with volunteers who provided services and support to make the event a wonderful experience for everyone.

Marsha follows the example of her mother-in-law Ellen Taylor, who has been active in the Garden for many years and has served as mentor for Marsha. Marsha’s favorite part of the Garden is the new Guest Center, where each Wednesday you can find her working a fourhour shift in the Gift Shoppe.

Marsha, a retired pharmacist, and her husband live on their farm with a menagerie of animals including a donkey and a 15-year-old llama.

Thank you, Marsha for your endless dedication and hard work to make things happen for Galaxy and the Garden.

Galaxy of Lights Once again the Garden’s dedicated team of volunteers presented a spectacular holiday event for our community. In November and December, there were 1,752 Galaxy of Lights volunteers who worked a total of 7,134 hours!

Here’s a quote from a very happy guest which says it all: “Thank you to everyone who works so hard every year to put this all together. It really is something special!”

Our second largest fundraiser at the Garden is the Spring Plant Sale. This one-of-a-kind sale is only possible because of our dedicated volunteers.

Vernon Bush and Harold Holmes work all year long to provide native plants for the sale. The Fern Society supplies an amazing selection of ferns. Our Garden Guild ladies also work all year growing perennials, herbs, hostas, ferns, roses, heirloom plants and more.

This year they are offering over 100 varieties of perennials. We are thrilled that some of the varieties, many that have been developed for more compact growth, are brand new this year and include: Monarda ‘Grape Gumball’, M. ‘Cherry Pops’, Nepeta f. ‘Kitten Around’, Phlox ‘Fashionably Early Lavender Ice’, Pulmonaria ‘Shrimps on the Barbie’, Salvia ‘Bumbleblue’, S. ‘Bumblesky’ and Veronica ‘Mona Lisa Smile’ to name a few. A few series of plants will be offered: Agastache ‘Kudos Gold’ and A. ‘Morello’, both bloom all summer long without deadheading. During the transition from winter to spring, many migrating birds feed and find security in the Garden’s diverse landscape when returning to their breeding areas in the upper latitudes of North America. The Lewis Birding Trail offers a unique opportunity to experience the Garden’s awaking to Spring in the early morning symphony of bird song while viewing many species of wintering birds.

Birds such as the Ruby-crowned and Goldencrowned Kinglets, Hermit Thrush, Chipping and White-throated Sparrows, Darked-eyed Juncos, Pine Warbler and Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers can be viewed. Some birds move throughout the Garden in large flocks like the American Robins, European Starlings, Common Grackles, Red-winged Blackbirds, and Cedar Waxwings to feed in meadows, on hollies and shrubs along the riparian forest of the Mathews Nature Trail, Bush Azalea Trail and Wetland Trail. The Cedar Waxwings create an exceptional birding experience when large flocks descend on berry laden holly and red cedar trees. Their feeding frenzy of devouring large quantities of berries is in preparation for the long migration to northern breeding grounds. Come and experience the pleasure and solitude of a quite morning walk and encounter the Garden’s charm in new dimensions.

This birding season will be highlighted on February 16-19 when the Garden sponsors a major event for bird education and winter bird watching: the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC).

Irrigation: Now is the time to check your system for the Season! Turn on system and begin making adjustments to heads for best coverage. Make sure to clean/ replace screens in heads, this prevents clogs and gives the best coverage. Look for leaks in system, repair when necessary.

The Garden is extremely lucky to have two beautiful spring blooming areas that are an absolute must see in late March through early April for peak blooms. Plan on coming out several times as the sequence of bloom changes daily. It is with great pride that we recognize Vernon’s efforts and welcome Rhododendron x ‘Harvey Cotten’, officially, to our plant collection. It will take some time to propagate a quantity of this new native azalea cultivar via softwood cuttings or tissue culture; but with any luck, we may be able to start selling Rhododendron x ‘Harvey Cotten’ at our seasonal plant sales within a few years! Visit our newly named ‘Harvey Cotten’ in Cotten Cove on the Bush Azalea Trail.

Huntsville Blooms Beginning in mid-February and continuing through April, we celebrate blooms of all shapes and sizes. We have been focusing on increasing our bulb collection in the last few years. This year we are happy to announce that we have planted an additional 15,000 daffodils, 10,000 tulips, and other spring bulbs to our collection.

Some of the new Narcissus varieties we have added are N. ‘Golden Echo’, N. ‘Quail’, N. ’Kedron’ and N. ‘Sunny Girlfriend.’ Last year our herbaceous Peony Collection (Paeonia) had peak blooms in mid-April. In addition, our spring blooming shrubs and trees will be in full force.
