On January 2nd, just minutes into a highly anticipated Monday-night NFL game, tragedy struck Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin suffered cardiac arrest after making a tackle in the week-seventeen match. With both teams in pursuit of a top seed in the playoffs, this game was one of the most important of the season Cincinnati was leading 7-3 in the first quarter of the contest when Bengals receiver Tee Higgins made a 13-yard reception. As Higgins approached the 50-yard line, Hamlin extended his arms to make the tackle. Running at full speed, Higgins lowered his shoulder and made contact with Hamlin’s head and chest area, word sending them both to the ground. Hamlin quickly got back up to his feet before taking several steps, adjusting his face mask, and falling backward. This seemingly typical football play soon turned into a nationally televised nightmare as an ambulance and the NFL’s medical staff took to the field, managing to restore a motionless Hamlin’s heartbeat by giving him CPR. From there, they transported him to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, where he was immediately intubated. This traumatic event left players from both clubs visibly upset.
