Garden Center provides residential and vocational supports to persons with developmental disabilities. While looking for fresh ideas to provide new opportunities for the people we serve, we found art. What started with just a handful of people painting and creating in a cramped office for fun has turned into a program that employs the creative process to promote a sense of accomplishment and personal well-being for those involved. Garden Gallery & Studio enables participants to create, display, and sell their artwork. A portion of gallery sales goes toward enhancing services for people with developmental disabilities.

ArtistNicholas Harris Nicholas, a 28 year old in our program has Autism. Nick loves art. His friends comment that he is calmer, more social, and appears happier as he has spent more time with his art. Nick needs to paint. He is a creative person who needs to release his talent. He can sit for hours everyday just painting. The smile on his face when he completes his work says it all.

ArtistMike Dahms Before the art program started at Garden Center Services, Mike sat alone and worked on his art in private. It took some time for the art instructor to gain his trust and entice him into the art room. After receiving supervision and guidance to create his art for a year, he has become a different person. Mike is advancing socially and feels pride for his work. His paintings have been displayed at Lewis University’s Caterpillar Gallery and at several Starbucks locations. Mike was an integral part of a team that created a bench for the Benches on the Avenue project in Tinley Park. Most recently, one of Mike’s sculptures was featured in a show at Vogt Visual Arts Center. The best part about working with Mike is watching him explore all the new venues of art and learning how to think outside the box.
