Prayer of Sending Forth

Rev. Kesicki: Lord God, You accompany us at each moment of our journey through life.

Continue to guide our graduates in the paths they have chosen.

May your truth purify their values.

May your wisdom enlighten their decisions. May your goodness be the foundation of their relationships.

Prompt their generosity in prosperity.

Deepen their humility in success.

Academic Regalia in American Universities

In 1895, the Intercollegiate Commission presented to American institutions of higher learning the Intercollegiate Code. Today, this code provides for three types of gowns. Those for bachelors are made of black material and have long, pointed sleeves. The master’s gown is made with an oblong sleeve, open at the wrist. The rear part of its oblong shape is a square cut and the front part has an arc cutaway. The doctor’s gown is made with bell-shaped sleeves and like the master’s gown, it is designed so that it can be worn open or closed.

The black oxford cap is worn for all degrees, but only the doctor’s cap may be made of velvet. Only doctors and presidents of colleges may wear a gold tassel on the cap.

Rev. Kesicki: May almighty God bless you, the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

All respond: Amen

It is the hood which is the most important and distinctive feature of the American code.

The doctor’s hood, of black cloth, is four feet in length and made with a wide panel. The master’s and bachelor’s hoods are three-and-one-half feet long and three feet wide.

The binding or trim of all hoods is of velvet, two, three and five inches wide for the bachelor’s, master’s and doctor’s degrees, respectively.

The color of this velvet trim indicates the department or faculty to which the degree pertains, each department having been assigned a different color by the Intercollegiate Code. The lining of the hood reflects the official colors of the college/university.

In June, he was appointed to the University of Southern California Annenberg School as a Visiting Fellow for the Center for Communication Leadership & Policy.

Since 2010, Scully has served as chairman of the Jefferson Educational Society global summit, the premier policy conference in Northwestern Pennsylvania. He has brought in leading figures in politics, academia and journalism, including President George W. Bush, First Lady Laura Bush, Rep. Liz Cheney, NPR’s Cokie Roberts, Fox News Political Analyst Karl Rove, historians Doris Kearns Goodwin and Doug Brinkley, PBS’ Judy Woodruff, CBS’ John Dickerson, and a long list of other experts in their field.

He is the former senior vice president at the Bipartisan Policy Center, and prior to that, Scully served as C-SPAN's senior executive producer and political editor for three decades.

During his time at C-SPAN, he conducted nearly 8,000 interviews, launched several signature programs and interviewed every U.S. president from President Gerald Ford to President Donald Trump.

Scully served as a member of the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) for nine years, including WHCA President. In 2019, he was inducted to the Pennsylvania Broadcasters Hall of Fame. His work covering every presidential campaign since 1992 has won multiple awards, including the Cable Ace and an Emmy.

He also served as an adjunct faculty member at a number of schools, including Purdue University, Pace University, University of Denver, University of Wisconsin and University of California-DC.

Scully began his journalism career at WSEE-TV in his hometown of Erie before working at WHEC-TV in Rochester, N.Y.

Steve is the 14th child in a family of 16, with five sets of twins and is married to Kathryn Reim, a Fairview, Pa. native. They have four children (Mary Cathryn, Cristen, Daniel and Natalie,) the youngest of whom was adopted. Two others died as infants—Carolyn in 1994 of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and Jack, in 1996, as a stillbirth. He serves on the board of directors of the CJ Foundation for SIDS and First Candle.
